Has anyone managed to get any DVD playing software running properly under SuSE 9 for the AMD64? I've got an ASUS K8V Deluxe MB and an NVIDIA GF5200FX video card, for what that's worth. I've been trying, with little success, to compile a working version of the 'Ogle' DVD player, but am running into all sorts of dependency issues with RPMs, and missing library issues compiling from source. If someone else has gotten this working, I'd be interested in hearing exactly what RPMs/source files you used and what steps you followed. Problems using graphical interfaces for bibtex

Hi there, after silently reading on this list for some months I now have a problem I can't solve with all my friends, so I'm going to ask my first question here. Same with the original gnu sources. After replacing config.sub and config.guess with newer versions from the installed (/usr/share) libtool configure succeeded. But the "make" afterwards then complained about some m4 stuff. See http://nopaste.php.cd/24184 for details. Since pybliographer did not work as intended, I tried to run bibview instead. But it core dumped with a segmentation violation in a "strcpy" right at startup. I'm a little stuck at this point and fear to handle all my bibliography manually with a plain text editor for my thesis. Any hints from your side? Help is very much appreciated! Opteron Hardware Configuration

Hello, I intend to use SuSE Linux 9.1 on a Asus AW171 Single Opteron Server with the following basic hardware configuration: Processor: AMD Opteron OSA 146 (2,0 GHz) Mainboard with NVIDIA nForce 3 pro150 Chipset (corresponds to Asus SK8N)**** Graphic ATI Radeon 7000 64 MB Integrated LAN: RealTek RTL8201BL Memory: 2 x 512 MB DDR333 ECC Kingston RAID controller: 3ware Escalade 7506-4LP Harddisk: 2 x 120 GB Seagate Barracuda 7200.7 /Serial ATA /8MB (ST3120026AS) Is it possible to carry on a stable server with this system using SuSE Linux 9.1. Has anyone testet such a system with SuSE Linux? Are any bugs known with the hardware described above . What is your opinion to such a configuration. Thanks for help Peter

Samba has bugs

I was able to confirm that reverting the samba package back to 3.0.2a-40 solves my problem of not being able to set file permissions to "read only" from my XP box. I'd tried just about everything and couldn't get it to work. I could copy a "read only" file to the share, I could remove the "read only" bit from the share, however, I could not for the life of me get it to set the "read only". Which was important for source control. Also, there not being a local echo for smbclient is still a problem. B-)

Is anyone using AutoYast2 to build cluster systems?

Hi Folks: A customer has asked us to look into building their Opteron cluster using SuSE. Before I port my old AutoInst tools, I wanted to see if AutoYast2 is used and ok for this task. Basically I want to be able to PXE boot Opteron nodes into SuSE 9.x installation. There are additional things I would like to do with IP address assignment and databases, but I'll be happy with a working PXE at first. Any thoughts? I looked over the AutoYast2 documents, and would like to hear from folks who have used it. Also, I had heard of some sort of HPC version of the distribution (stripped down of things not relevant to clusters). Anyone know about this? Is it real? If so, who can I speak to about it? Thanks. For me a --disable-fbdev did the trick. Only works of course if you do not depend on framebuffer output though. Regards Michael

Suse 9.0 for x86_64 and php 4.3.8

Hi! Since there is no new update for PHP for Suse 9.0 for x86_64 with latest PHP (4.3.8) I am trying to build it. But there are problems. It cannot find libjpeg. I tried to put --with-jpeg-dir=/usr/lib64 --with-jpeg-dir=/usr/ but nothings works. Does someone has latest php build? Perhaps in src.rpm? Thanks. MIlan

ADM Comet test driver for 64bit (e.g. for scaleo 600)

In case you have a ADM Comet Tulip card (e.g. found in Fujitsu-Siemens Scaleo 600 Athlon64 machines): This driver didn't work on 64bit before. Please test the new driver in ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/people/ak/test2/tulip.ko together with the latest 9.1 update kernel (2.6.5-7.95) Just put tulip.ko into /lib/modules/2.6.5-override-default and restart the system and check if the builtin ethernet works now. If it works or fails please send me a mail. If you have a different Tulip card in a x86-64 system I would also appreciate testing and success/failure reports. The driver is only compiled for Uniprocessor systems so far, it won't work on SMP. -Andi

In order to change that to ../lib64/.. we need to give ld the correct search path. ldconfig seems to have the /lib64/ path's, but that does not help. But if you look in the makefile in the only line which has the -lX11 and -lXext, there is a -L(path) option given before. And this is taken the /lib/ value from the LIBDIRECTORY definition at the beginning of the makefile. And there - oops - is lib and not lib64. So just change that line to =lib64, and it will compile, and it will install correctly (in lib64 and not in lib). After installing it, and after adding the synaptics section to your XF86Config, it works really fine, even the scroll area, which emulates a mouse wheel, works. But before you go through that, what touchpad do you have in your notebook? Is it synaptics or Alps? As a downside the USB Mouse does not work anymore. I do not know yet why, it apparently does not even get recognized at all anymore. It seems o be a problem with USB in general. I'm working on that ... Having a problem compiling the latest version of MPlayer (I did get an earlier version compiled with no problems). DDR 400--Or, Does This Sound Right?

I bought my AMD64 system in early May. It has a 3200+ processor on a Gigabyte K8N Pro MB with 1 GB of DDR 400 RAM. For over two months I've been running SuSE 9.1 in 64 bit mode with no problems. Suddenly a week or so ago I encountered system freeze ups to the point where I couldn't even run Knoppix anymore. Long story short, the repair guy at the local shop I bought the box at said that on AMD64 systems, the DDR 400 memory needs to be underclocked down to DDR 333. "Why would it work for two months with no problem?" said I. "That's the way they are." said he. Does this sound right? Does anyone here have DDR 400 RAM on their boxes that work properly? I haven't even gone into how they snookered me out of $100 for a new hard drive when we thought the freeze ups were related to hard drive access. So you can see the reason I'm a little sceptical. It just doesn't sound right that you can't run DDR 400 on 64 bit, but who knows? (Hopefully someone here, which is why I'm asking... :-) -- Bryce Hardy (Santa Rosa, CA USA) cygnia(a)sonic.net

lm_sensors modules on SuSE-9.0

Hello, I tried to work w/lm_sensors-2.8.0-75.x86-64.rpm under SuSe Linux 9.0 for Opteron. We have Tyan S2880/K8S motherboard which uses W83627hf chip. sensors-detect detects this chip, but there is no like module in RPM package :-( Current lm_sensors source version (on lm_sensors Web-site) is 2.8.7, but it requires i2c version at least 2.8.1 and I need to patch the kernel for this i2c version. I'm afraid a bit this procedure, because it's not 32-bit but 64-bit kernel, and SuSE kernel includes a set of SuSE enhancements. Sorry, do somebody work w/lm_sensors, SuSE 9.0 & S2880 mobos ? Postfix smtp crashes with Signal 11 (SIGSEGV)

Hi all, on my SuSE 9.1 x86_64 I have the postfix mailer activ (rpm: postfix-2.0.19_20040312-11). All works fine, but if I have a bounce the smtp process crashes [1] with the result that a bounce email was generated but orgininal email would be resist in the activ queue. I have debugged the smtp, qmgr and bounce process, but it tells me only that the stdin parameters are wrong. [2] I googled on this problem, but I didn't found much about this problem. The only thing was a reported bug in the SSL/TLS/SASL implementation. But that didn't help me much:-) So I build my own postfix (2.1.4) and everything (bouncing and SSL, SASL, too) works fine! But for easier updating I like to use the SuSE package.. So any ideas?! btw. the same postfix configuration (main.cf, master.cf) runs well on different machines and the rest on this maschine works fine! globus-2.2.4 rpm

Hello, I'm trying to work w/globus-2.2.4-74.x86-64.rpm (taken from 8.2 beta) which I installed under SuSE Linux 9.0 (unfortunately last distributive do not have Globus rpm). The reasons were very simple: as I know, there are troubles to install Globus (from source) on Opteron. The GRIDftp problems in 2.2.4-74'rpm are not important for me currently. Some things I checked are working. But I didn't find gpt-build utility in any of binary RPM's for Globus/gpt ! I need gpt-build to install Simple CA package (which is unfortunately also absent in SuSE 8.2 rpm's). Sorry, do somebody install Simple CA on SuSE 9.0/Opteron ? I'm also interesting in any information about installations of Globus under SuSE 9.0; Globus 2 (2.2, 2.4) is more interesting for me than Globus 3. More SAMBA issues (new patch?)

my samba share used to work correctly until yesterdays patch now, no matter what I do, the windows client can't set any file attributes. I'm really only interested in the "read only" for source control. I have, however, added inherit permissions = no map system = yes map hidden = yes map archive = yes create mask = 755 and NONE of it works. any ideas? B-)

upgrade to 9.1 on hp zv5000 no screen

Hi- I tried to upgrade from 9.0 to 9.1 on my NP zv5000 AMD64 upgrade went well until booting installed system. Then screen was blank for about 10min. No problem as a clean install is not a bad idea but I get same resull. I suspect the 1600x1050 lcd screen is the issue. Any suggestions b4 I try another clean install? Thanx Robert (Bob) L. Powernow-k8 full speed on AC only

I have the Mitac 855 Athlon64 laptop (same machine as Erich). I have successfully got dynamic power throttling and full cpu speed working in kernels 2.6.4-54.5 and 2.6.8-rc2 but only when the power is applied. If I remove power, the system drops to 800MHz and remains there, no matter what power profiles are configured, or what speed is passed to /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq. I was forced to set other=ignore in /etc/powersaved.conf as suggested by Andi Kleen (thanks!) but that's all I changed, besides trying to force full speed in the battery profile. Also, when I boot up on battery, the speed remains at 800MHz even if I restart powersaved. Similarly if I suspend to disk, and then resume. (More on suspend/standby later ;) Any Ideas?? Thanks!
