problem with c64-emulator vice

Hello, I tried to start the C64-emulator "vice" on my AMD Athlon 64 maschine with Asus K8V Deluxe board and 1GB RAM under KDE running SuSE 9.1, but all I got was -------------------------snip------------------------------- >~ x64 *** VICE Version 1.14 *** Welcome to x64, the free portable C64 Emulator. nvidia GeForce FX 5200 problem

Hello, I have problem with nvidia GeForce FX 5200 graphics card on Suse 9.1 64bit. When some specific output should be displayed (mostly scrolling in xterm/Mozilla etc.), display is switched to black for 1 second. It's like blank screen saver, but I'm pretty sure that it's not misconfigured screen saver :-) I have tried both 1.0-5332 and 1.0.6106 drivers, I have tried Option "AGPMode" "4" or Option "NvAgp" "1", but nothing has changed. The problem is with kernels 2.6.5-7.75 and 2.6.5-7.95. Has anyone else the same problem? Mirek Ruda

You are right; the newer Escalade cards now have much better hardware based parity generators. But then, the difference between writing to an EXT2 file system made on these LUNs with and without journaling was much smaller than the difference between configuring these LUNs as RAID5 and RAID0/RAID1+0. I wonder if there are more efficient file systems that run like EXT2 without the journaling but provide the playback feature so that you don't have to fsck a disk after a system comes back up from an abrupt shut down? Now that we're talking about file systems in terabyte sizes, a full fsck can take a really long time. eyc

I am using an Escalade 7506-8 on a MSI K8D Master (dual Opteron) board running SLES 8. I had a lot of problems getting it all to work at first. But it is now working. The first thing you should do is check with the 3ware site to see which board they support, and what firmware (BIOS) upgrade you might need. They had some issues with their newer boards not working in PCI-X buses, or something like that, but that did not affect me. My problem with the motherboard had to do with out of date BIOSs, so once those were updated, the motherboard worked fine with the controllers. My more furstrating problems were with SLES 8, as the version on the origianl install CD needed a lot of patching. The strange thing was that the initial installation seemed to proceed correctly, and it even recognized the disks configured on the Escalade. But the machine would hang up when trying to boot. The procedure I eventually worked out was to do the initial install, remove the Escalade, boot the system and immediately apply all the patches. Then I can re-install the Escalade card and boot the system back up, and MOST things will appear to work: On the SLES 8/32 version, we introduced some kind of errors with the updates that prevented us from installing Oracle components. The initial install of Oracle was done BEFORE the patches, and those went fine. We ended up going to SLES 8/64, following the above procedure, and after Oracle released their support for Linux/64. Also, somewhere along the patches, the support for disks greater than 1TB started to work, but it was too late for us. We had already configured multiple LUNs of less than 1TB each because of initial problems with LUNs that were bigger. As a side note, the RAIDing functions of the Escalade cards are all done by their kernel drivers. Therefore, if you use a parity based RAID, like level 3 or level 5, you will be sucking down your CPU as you use those disks. I have mine configured in RAID 1+0, to get greater capacity, speed, and 100% redundancy. good luck, eyc

Hi I want to use SuSE Linux 9.1 with a AMD Opteron single cpu and if possible with a 3ware raid controler (Escalade 7506-4LP). Has anybody experience with such a configuration. SataRAID

Hi, I want to install SuSE Linux 9.1 but it doesn't recognize the SataRAID configured on the BIOS RAID configuration utility. This is the message that appears: ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Error WARNING: This system has at least one hard disk with a RAID configuration sold by de BIOS as RAID that is in fact a Software Raid. We detected de folowing disks to be part of such RAID. /dev/sda /dev/sdb /dev/sdc /dev/sdd The linux kernel 2.4 support some of this systems (Fasttrack and HighPoint RocketRaid), the linux kernel 2.6 does not support them at all. If you do an installation into these disks your RAID configuration and any data on the raid will be lost. Getting Xine to Play DVD's

Hi All, I just got a new box, AMD Athlon 64 2800+, and installed SuSE 9.1 on it. I'm coming from an old PII 450mhz machine where I was also running 9.1 for the past month (I'm a very recent Linux user). On the 32 bit machine, it was relatively easy to get Xine to work with DVDs, just visit packman's site and download the correct RPMs and install them. With this new 64 bit machine, no such luck. I've looked thru this lists archive back to May and noted several references to compiling from source, and other references to using the 32 bit version. The existing posts I found all assume a level of knowledge that I haven't come anywhere close to achieving yet. So, my questions. 1) Is it possible to get DVD's to play on the AMD64? 32 bit or 64 bit player, either one. 2) If so, is there a source somewhere with step by step instructions on how to accomplish that? Any luck with Matrox Parhelia frame buffer?

Hi Folks, Being a gutton for punishment, I decided to try a Matrox Parhelia frame buffer on a new Tyan S2875 with two 246 Opterons. Yast picks the card up as "VESA", nothing more. Matrox has a beta driver for Redhat 9.0, but it doesn't install cleanly on SuSE 9.1. What do you think? Should I get a Matrox G550 and put the Parhelia on the shelf for a year or so until the drivers catch up? If not a G550, what would you recommend? Thanks in advance, Lew Wolfgang
