upgrade to 9.1 on hp zv5000 no screen
Hi- I tried to upgrade from 9.0 to 9.1 on my NP zv5000 AMD64 upgrade went well until booting installed system. Then screen was blank for about 10min. No problem as a clean install is not a bad idea but I get same resull. I suspect the 1600x1050 lcd screen is the issue. Any suggestions b4 I try another clean install? Thanx Robert (Bob) L. when do you get the "blank" screen? - right after grub, when you start booting, or later, when the x-server starts? And is this after a fresh install - meaning there was no old XF86Config anymore, which might try to load the nvidia driver, which might not yet be installed for the new kernel which 9.1 installed? Just to verify that graphics is the problem, add a "3" to the grub boot
line to boot into text mode instead of graphical mode. You can then logon
as root, and try to start X manually be typing "startx". If it is
misconfigured, lyou will probably still get the blank screen, maybe blinking
several times, but you should be able to kill it with a <ctrl-C>, and see
the output from the startx command. The errors should also be logged in
/var/log/XFree86.0.log. The problem is probably in the /etc/X11/XF86Config
file, ant the configuration for the widescreen laptop. These widescreen
displays are fairly new, and the XFree86 drivers do not have mode lines for
some of the more odd sizes. I have found a couple of mode lines for a
coupld of the HP widescreens running 1440x900, but I haven't seen one for
the 1680x1050 of the zv5000.
Here is a mode line from the latest Nvidia driver release notes (
ftp://download.nvidia.com/XFree86/Linux-x86/1.0-6106/README.txt ) for
1400x1050 that might get you going...
