Adaptec 2110S SCSI RAID and SuSe 9.0 AMD64

I have been messing around with the install of SuSe AMD64 and can not get this thing to work at all. I had to use the switch "idle=poll" and that got the install program to stop hanging at the hardware detect section. Now the problem that I have come across is that when ever I try to load the drivers for my Adaptec 2110S SCSI RAID controller the system crashes with a really long error message. I was wondering if anyone has found a fix for this. I have tried all sorts of things to get this to work but have had no success as of yet. Please advice on this issue. Thanks. Good luck, - Darrell << Yeah, the kicker was I was having no problems with ssh going outbound, so I did some more checking - looks like I had 2 different problems: I upgraded my version of Putty to v0.53b from o.52 - that seems to have fixed the login abort problem. I checked my aliases on the bashrc file and "cd" was different - it was aliased to also run an ls. I have had no problems with this on other systems but went ahead and disabled it - well that seemed to do the trick. Installation Problem - SUSE AMD64 on Gigabyte K8N Pro

I didn´t manage to install SUSE Linux AMD64 DVD on my System (Gigabyte K8N Pro) - I get a kernel panic right after booting from the install dvd. I also tried "poll=idle" as stated in the Suse support database - no effort... Any ideas ?

ATI needs to release a driver! Perhaps all of us AMD64 ATI users need to lobby ATI en masse. Does Ati have any plans to release drivers for their high-end (like firegl x2, r9800) on amd64 platforms ? They've announced support almost a year ago, and yet, all we have is framebuffer... Tom#

ssh problems

I am intending to use my Athlon64 box with Suse 9.0-64 for a game server which means that all communication will be remote via ssh. It will replace an existing box that has been running a year and a half on RH7.3. The 64 has been working fine as a local terminal. I have kept everything up-to-date. However, I am having severe problems with ssh (good thing I tried it before installing it 30 miles away). Putty from windows aborts after accepting a password. Using ssh from another (32-bit) box will log in and run "ls" commands but hangs on a "cd" command. Only recourse is to Cntrl-C and exit. Anyone else having these issues? Or is everyone using their systems locally? Thanks. ......Chuck

Hi Andreas, I just tried Vuescan with a Canon LiDE 30, which Vuescan is supposed to support. Alas, it couldn't find the scanner when Kooka had no problems. Some IOCTL error messages appeared in /var/log/messages, which might indicate a rather fundamental problem at the ABI level? This on a dual-processor Tyan Opteron mobo. Hy Andreas & list , There is no difference if I connect the SATA drives to the VIA connector. But there is a difference between booting by DVD and booting by new Patch. I've attached both "last screens". An interesting detail by booting with the Patch CD is the recognized VT8237 controller: Both Drives have been recognized, but IMHO not all partitions. -->> hda: DVD-Drive , hdb: IDE0 , hdc: IDE1 , hdd: DVD-R Drive. In both booting cases the installation stops at the hardware detection. Any further ideas how I can go on ? Regards Francisco

Recovery using Suse 9.0 Patch-CD

How would one go about this if all your drives are SATAs and you aren't getting even a whisper of a boot? The Patch-CD recovery doesn't seem to detect the hard disks (i.e. I cant mount them). The normal Installation does it without a hitch, but it only allows reinstallation, not repair of existing systems. Manual install, the only other viable option, locks up looking for an info file or something. Very frustrating (especially since I know I'm probably missing something glaringly obvious again.) Hi everybody, I like to know whether vuescan (a scan program written by Ed Hamrick) runs on AMD64 and if so, if it runs on 32 Bit Linux or 64 Bit Linux or both. Unfortunately Ed Hamrick could not answer these questions. Now, if somebody here owns an AMD64, a scanner (preferably SCSI) and has some spare time, could he please download the trial version of vuescan at http://www.hamrick.com/vsm.html und try it? The advantage is that currently (for a limited time) Ed gives the Standard Version of Vuescan free for personal use on Linux, so anybody owning a scanner gets a very good scan program for free. Motherboard recommendations

I am very happy to read the announcement that several chipsets SATA should work. I want to build a new system. I am considering amd64 and amd64fx. It is not easy to browse MB and figure out which chipsets are on which boards. Hy, Having 2 Samsung Spinpoint 1613c SATA drives I tried to boot with the new ISO with that new Kernel. The new iso boots, but also stopped at Hardware detection / floppy drive etc. How can I go on ? Does it make sense to disconnect the SATA drives from the Promise Controller and connect them to the VIA supported connecters ? I've got a Asus K8V Mainboard ... Thank you in advance and sorry for my "rookie" questions. I'm a totally linux-newbie with the hope to get out of this XP-World ... ;-) Regards Francisco

Hi all, I am a engineer/programmer (fortran,C++) with some experience in system admin, but not nearly to the level of the people on this list. I'm looking into buying a new computer system and would like the opinion of someone on this list how difficult they think it would be to set up with Suse. I've used numerous versions of Mandrake before and am now looking to try something better. I've never compiled a kernel or added a patch before, but would not be afraid to try it.
