Hi all,
April 16-17 in Antwerp, Belgium, the Linux Open Administration Days will
take place. This free event offers a chance for LPI certification as
well as meeting and talking to linux sysadmins. There is a call for
presentations here: http://www.loadays.org/content/call-presentations
If you want to go and give a talk there about openSUSE tech - that's be
awesome. If you can't afford to go there due to travel or hotel costs,
let me know, we might be able to work something out ;-)
cheers,
Jos
Hello friends,
Below is a link to a document which contains the text of a flyer we have
developed for openSUSE marketing. If you're able and willing to translate this
in your language of choice and send it to me, I make sure it gets integrated
in the flyer so we can put these online for you and others to download and
print as well as for us to print and send to our ambasadors!
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/29347181/openSUSE%20Brochure%20final%20text.odt
The sooner these gets done, the bigger the chance we can print a bunch.
However, we'll focus on the 'bigger' languages and countries where people
usually don't know English very well first.
Thanks in advance,
Jos
The openSUSE promodvd is currently produced and once we've done that,
I'll make a call for orders.
You can download the ISOs from this location as well to burn yourself an
image:
http://widehat.opensuse.org/opensuse/promodvds/
Each version contains:
* the installable GNOME LiveCD
* the installable KDE LiveCD
* a normal DVD install image (with 1 GB less data than the normal image)
So, this is a great media to show case openSUSE and give it away at
events. If you just want to install openSUSE on your own system, I
suggest to download one of the images via software.opensuse.org.
Since for most users downloading the specific media is better, we're not
putting the promodvd on our mirror network and you have to download it
from our widehat.o.o server.
Andreas
P.S. I'm currently uploading the DVDs, it will take a few minutes for
both to show up

Apologies for the cross posting, but I want to be sure to get as many interested parties involved possible
I'm volunteering to co-ordinate an openSUSE stand at FOSDEM this February
I have to confess to being a FOSDEM beginner, but I know enough that I'm getting myself involved in a big thing, and I'm going to need help.
Even if you're not coming this year, I especially welcome advice and guidance from FOSDEM veterans. What worked in previous years? what do I need to know? what do I need to avoid?
To have a stand, we need to have our proposal in by 12th December.
For both days, FOSDEM can provide either one or two 1m80 x 80cm tables, with 2 chairs per table.
We'll need at least 2 people to man the stand, though the more the merrier, and the less time we'll each have to spend working the stand.
As it's a big event my plan is to ask for 2 tables, but I need to have an idea of how many of you will be willing to help make our presence at FOSDEM felt
So if you're coming to FOSDEM, and would like to help out, please either reply to me directly or ideally to the opensuse-marketing mailing list
If any of you who work in NUE are coming to FOSDEM, please let me know, we might need your help to ferry goodies and stuff from SUSE offices to save on shipping.
Many Thanks

Hey guys,
today I read that the "CeBIT Open Source" is looking for open source
projects for the fair in 2012. The fair takes place in Hanover, Germany
in the time from the 6th till the 10th of march. The projects can apply
until December 18, 2011. Is openSUSE going to have a stand there?
Greetings,
Sebastian

Hey Ambassadors
please all give a warm welcome to our new ambassador from France,
Nicolas CARLIER
Below you can learn more about his relationship with openSUSE
as he told us in his own words.
* What have you done already for openSUSE?
For openSUSE, I regularly participated in the French translation of
the more important as reaching a new version or tutorial.
As said above, in 2004, when there was no community SUSE, I took the
initiative to open a French-speaking community Alionet.org. Since
then, Alionet association is to promote openSUSE and open source
independently.
Sometimes I also do the bug report, because programming languages
are not in my competence.
* What are your plans for promoting openSUSE? Please tell us what you
want to do the next 6 months.
My promotion projects are very simple: translation of documents into
French, organization of events in parallel range of officials, then
continue the events which I already involved, such as Saturday,
October 1st, I will be on the forum Roubaix associations presented to
the free Software and openSUSE.
* Are you ready to start promoting openSUSE?
^ ^ Funny question! I have already started for many years, I'm ready!
* What do you think is the best kept secret of openSUSE?
I like mainly the contact people, their share my knowledge, my advice,
learn new things.
* Why do you love to do this?
It's really by chance in a mall, I was only 14, I bought a box
containing the distribution RedHad start with a book. I was not very
convinced! But in 2000, a friend made me try SUSE Linux Standard,
had a revelation! Since then, my main SUSE distribution.

Hey Ambassadors
please all give a warm welcome to our new ambassador from India,
Saurabh Sood .
Below you can learn more about his relationship with openSUSE
as he told us in his own words.
1.) What have I done for openSUSE so far?
I have given talks regarding openSUSE, and the open Build Service in
my college. Recently, I gave a lightning talk on OSC Plugins at PyCon
India 2011. I have also helped people in my college to install, and
use and troubleshoot openSUSE. I am also working on Developing Plasma
Widgets for the Open Build Service. The project can be found at
github.
https://github.com/saurabhsood91/Build-Service-Plasma-Widgets
I'm also active on openSUSE channels on IRC. My Nick is saurabhsood91
2.) Plans for Promoting openSUSE (next 6 months)
I am going to take a talk on openSUSE on behalf of GTUG Manipal this
week. I have also applied for a talk on OSC plugins at FOSDEM. As part
of Linux User's Group, Manipal, we conduct Linux Install Fest for
First Year students. We will be conducting an openSUSE install fest
during that time. Manu Gupta was the ambassador for our college, but
he is passing out shortly from the college. I can take over from him,
and continue the work.
3.) Ready to Start promoting openSUSE?
I am ready to start promoting openSUSE on a wider scale. I have
already got people interested in promoting openSUSE in my college, and
I can continue to do the same as part of the Ambassadors project.
4.) Best Kept secret of openSUSE?
SUSE stands for Software und System Entwicklung, and it was earlier
written as SuSE.
5.) Why do you love to do this?
I started out in openSUSE, with having little knowledge of using
Linux. The openSUSE wiki, Reference E-Books helped me get over
handling linux. The IRC channels are quite active, and I always got
help whenever I needed it. The community is amazing. I submitted a
proposal for GSoC 2011. It wasnt accepted, but I worked on it
voluntarily, and got the support of the community.
6.) How I started with Linux
My first experience with Linux was 5 years back, when I installed
Ubuntu. I just learnt to work in the linux environment, without
learning much. I started using Linux seriously two years back. I used
ubuntu for 6 months. Manu Gupta coerced me into trying openSUSE, and
since then, I have been using and supporting openSUSE.

Hi!,on 2011-11-19 we had our 12.1 launch party in Guatemala City.
It was set up by my fellow ambassador @konelix, and we had a lot of
fun. There were talks by @konelix, @cmike, me and @marilux, we also
ate pizza, sweet breads and drank a few beers. We also had 3
experienced members from Debian that joined us and 2 newbies from
outside of the FOSS world.
A local band played metal and thrash songs for the closing event.
The group photo is in there

with a big papercraft-cardboard lizard.
The rest of the gallery is in here.

Hey Ambassadors
please all give a warm welcome to our new ambassador from Germany,
Sebastian Weiss
Below you can learn more about his relationship with openSUSE
as he told us in his own words.
* What have you done already for openSUSE?
* What are your plans for promoting openSUSE? Please tell us what you
want to do the next 6 months.
* Are you ready to start promoting openSUSE?
* What do you think is the best kept secret of openSUSE?
* Why do you love to do this?
* How did you start with Linux/openSUSE? What is your level of
experience?
well I haven't exactly done something for openSUSE yet. However I'd like
to change that. Anyway, I try to convince friends to use Linux but its
sometimes really hard when people are so narrow-minded. I plan on giving
a presentation as an introduction to GNU/Linux at my university.
What I can do for openSUSE really depends on how much time I have in the
near future and I need to figure out if there is an interest of the
students for Linux here at the university. I know that there has been a
Linux User Group at my university, but they are not active anymore. I
will asked them and maybe there is a chance to reactivate this group.
I would love to help people get started with Linux/openSUSE.
I started using Linux, when I installed Sabayon Linux in a dual boot
environment as my first Linux. However this distribution was not user
friendly at all, so I installed openSUSE 11.3 with KDE 4.4 and I use it
ever since. Then openSUSE was the only operating system on my laptop. I
believe this was about two years ago. I know that there's still much to
learn about openSUSE and Linux. I would say that I have some experience
with openSUSE, however I would like to learn more.
And yes, I am ready to start promoting openSUSE.
I don't know... what is the best kept secret about openSUSE?
I love to do this, because, I love my Linux operating system. I fully
support and agree to the ideas behind open source. I like the idea that
there is a great community where everybody helps each other not because
they get money but because they want to help. I think that's fantastic.
