Hello all,
I worked with some staff here at the Bellingham, WA Attachmate office
and at Attachmate HQ in Seattle, WA to put on BetaPizza parties
yesterday for internal staff.
Since many Attachmate staffers are new to SUSE, openSUSE (and Linux in
general) we decided to do this first party internal only; we plan to
invite the community to the next event.
Here in Bham, we had a dozen people attend; Seattle had a bit more than
twice that. One of the local Attachmate devs (and an openSUSE user) and
I did a brief presentation introducing the GNOME & KDE desktops,
explaining the live media, going over some specific internal questions
(such as how to use Citrix applications), and introducing everyone to
bugzilla. After that we split off and did some installs, both live and
virtual, as well as some live disc runs.
All in all, we had 8 hardware installs, numerous virtual installs (on
VirtualBox & VmWare) and 20 people trying out Live CDs.
One of the largest issues we had was in virtualization, suprisingly.
VmWare does not include 3D acceleration, so GNOME users were "treated"
to fallback mode. VirtualBox 4.1.4 (the current release) for OSX crashed
when trying to run the beta w/ 3D acceleration. VirtualBox 4.1.4 for
Windows presented corrupt video & GNOME Shell crashes when using 3D
acceleration.
Other than that, things went relatively smoothly, and I even learned a
few things myself (like how to install firmware blobs for broadcom
wireless), and everyone "ha[d] a lot of fun!"
We're looking forward to doing this again for 12.2 :)
