Software Freedom Day is Coming!

On September 18, it is international Software Freedom Day. Software Freedom Day aims to celebrate Free Software and the people behind it. It wants to spread the word about Free Software and help people find each other. We, the openSUSE community, of course need to be part of this! So this is a call to you all: mark September 18 in your agenda. Check the Software Freedom Day website [1] and find the meeting in your neighborhood [2]. If there is none, how about setting one up? Go to the Start Guide [3] and get to work. You can organize your own event! Of course, openSUSE will help you. If you plan to go to an event or organize one, get in contact with us at marketing(a)opensuse.org ! Event Summary Report?

I've discussed with a few folks on a short event summary report. It should be really brief so that everybody can send it out directly after an event - and later do a more lengthy report if desired. My list currently has: * 1 page only - to send it out quickly * how many DVDs did you take? How many DVDs did you distribute? * how many people where at the event? At the booth? * three most asked questions/topics at booth? * What was the most interesting comment, question, talk you heard? * Will you blog about the event - and where? * Who staffed the booth? * Did you have a talk? Which topic? Will you provide slides for others to use? Do you think this would be usefull? What should get added to the list? I'll put the above tomorrow on the wiki (with your suggested changed) and will invite everybody to update it as fit - and then to use it for sending a brief report. Ambassador programs research

Hi all, As discussed in the recent meeting, I have spent some time looking into other projects Ambassador programs, my findings are listed below: Fedora and GNOME both had a great deal of information regarding their Ambassadors and whilst I was unable to find Ambassador programs for other projects, many of them have had talk about starting one. Also QT has a fairly new Ambassador program. GNOME: - Business Cards - Ambassador shirts (uniform) - Event travel sponsorship - Banners, Posters & Flyers - Event box (everything needed to set up an event booth) - Presentation slides Fedora: - Business Cards - Ambassador shirts (uniform) - Event travel sponsorship - Banners, Posters & Flyers - Event box (everything needed to set up an event booth) - Presentation slides and slide templates - Mentors (Ambassadors who have been approved to mentor new and potential Ambassadors) - T-shirts, Stickers, Pens, etc. (and a list of local vendors who can produce them to save on shipping costs) QT: - Allowed to use the ambassador logo - Access to merchandise/giveaways - Ambassador shirt (uniform) - Must have proven QT skills Both Fedora and GNOME had good Ambassador web-pages which make the aforementioned resources very easy to apply for/download. -- Barry D. I'd like to welcome Nitin Sookun as new ambassador to Mauritius, below is his introduction, Andreas ---------- Forwarded Message ---------- Hello Andreas, Glad to see your mail. * What have you done already for openSUSE? Well, to start with what I've already done for openSUSE, I'm running version 11.3 on a few computers at two of Indra Cybercafés. I've always been a Linux lover but till now the biggest hurdle to get the young population using Linux was gaming. Recently, we used Wine to run Counter Strike 1.6 on LAN in one of our cybercafés and it was an awesome experience. Many gamers present there found it thrilling and wanted to run the same on their home pc. Now, in Mauritius the average home broadband is of 512kbps and they have limited bandwidths. So, I offered the guys chance to burn DVDs from the images we already downloaded in the cybercafé. Now, two of the cybercafés where openSUSE is already running, many people visit us for advices, or tweaking tips. When we started this "Linux Awareness" we ran openSUSE 11.1, Fedora 12 and Ubuntu 9.10. Among these, openSUSE and Ubuntu were the most liked ones. So, we decided to go ahead with these two distros. I registered my company as a partner with Novell, and also contacted Canonical for Ubuntu. With Canonical it was kind of unpleasant for us because we had to commit a minimum amount of Ubuntu units, which was far too large for a small population of computer/internet users in Mauritius. With Novell it was easier because they had the Silver Partner Level which didn't impose any kind of "commitment" to start business. Our initial idea was to make people aware of Linux and introduce them to these distros. These involved a lot of marketing/time on our side and with a Canonical partnership, this became difficult. However, with Novell we have the chance to provide corporate solutions through SUSE Enterprise Linux and still spread the word about openSUSE without affecting business. * What are your plans for promoting openSUSE? I'm planning to run openSUSE on all machines in our 3 cybercafés. This will amount to 100 computers running openSUSE, and consequently more people getting used to it. To solve the hurdles of gaming on Linux, we're also contacting codeweavers, to run "crossover games" on PCs intended for LAN gaming. We also provide IT Solutions & Support and have a retail store. We're planning to provide PCs with openSUSE pre-installed and sell openSUSE box packages through the retail stores. The more adventurous Linux enthusiasts will surely like to buy their own copy and experience it! * Are you ready to start promoting openSUSE? Yes. In fact, I already have a bunch of college/university students (regulars of Indra Cybercafé), who upon hearing my idea of openSUSE promotion, are keen to help. They are all Linux lovers and are waiting for the chance when they will receive the "backing" of a great distro! We intend to introduce openSUSE in schools, and government-run 'social welfare centres' where people get free computer/internet access. * What do you think is the best kept secret of openSUSE? Hmm... I guess that one you're going to teach me ;) * Why do you love to do this? Like I told you, I'm a Linux lover and I just enjoying spreading the word about it. * How did you start with with Linux/openSUSE? What is your level of experience? I started something like 10 years ago, during college days. My first Linux experience was with Red Hat 6.0. It was awesome! As time went by I got to know many other distros, and was always keen to test any as soon as it was available for download. Well... I'm comfortable with installation & configs, I can use Terminal and ease and do some enough tweaks and customizations to make my desktop elegant. Linux commands are also fine for me, well most of them. I've created LAN and also wireless networks using openSUSE. openSUSE Mauritius

Hello friends, I'm getting the support of some fellow linux users to organize an openSUSE marketing event at the University of Mauritius (http://www.uom.ac.mu) I'm getting the collaboration of UoM's students' union. We'll set up a booth with a few laptops with Internet connection. The event will take place inside the university's campus, and we hope to get the attention of mostly students from the faculties of engineering and computer science. Since, as an ambassador this will be my first such experience, I need your ideas and suggestions. I'd like to know how to arrange for flyers, dvds etc. I'll set up a team with the students union who will help us there. Refreshment/snacks will be offered to the marketing team as sponsorship from Indra Co. Ltd. We will however need some flyers with info about openSUSE, need some graphics/logo to prepare invitation cards and posters for the event. We still haven't decided a date, we'll be meeting next week to plan how we're going to proceed. The university's campus comprises of some 10,000 students. This will be a great opportunity to bring openSUSE under the spotlight. I have some friends studying computer science there, and I was told that lecturers recommend them to use ubuntu for testing and experimenting their linux and programming skills, because ubuntu is easily available. So, we can grab this opportunity to introduce them openSUSE and explain that they can get support from openSUSE forums and IRC. That's why I'll arrange for Internet on the laptops. We'll demonstrate everything during explanations. I have answered your questions and those answers are given below * What have you done already for openSUSE? In our college i along with my friends have been running a free opensource community known as "SFOSS" for the past six months in order to create an awareness about free and opensource softwares. Lot of students were taking part in that campaign and i have promoted users to use openSUSE. I used to distribute copies of openSUSE among those people. Initially people hesitated to use openSUSE because of the absence of proprietary multimedia codecs in the official version of openSUSE. so one of the members of our community P.SIBI(psibi200(a)gmail.com) wrote a multimedia script to enable the proprietary multimedia codecs in openSUSE and i distributed the script all over my college. so many people started using opensuse. * What are your plans for promoting openSUSE? As a part our community we are running a website "www.sfoss.in" to promote the usage of opensource softwares and to spread the awareness about opensource. In future i planned to publish articles about the openSUSE and its elegance so as to make more people aware of openSUSE and to promote more people to use openSUSE. * What do you need to start promoting openSUSE? Hello Ambassadors and friends. First, I'm so glad about our meeting today, we have a good quality in numbers of participants and contents. Thanks for everyone! Just for formalizations and to let everyone able to understand what we are planning to do for the openSUSE Ambassadors Program, I updated our Ambassadors Meeting page with a link to the meeting log. Sure, all of you had sent very valuable contributions and points to the table. Some action that we got are listed bellow: * CarlosRibeiro help to define/purpose a better plan for Ambassadors reports * Every ambassador should aggregate her/his blog on planet.opensuse.org * Carlos, lupinstein and sakana will work as volunteers to help running the ambassador program smoothly * CarlosRibeiro sends a mail to the Ambassadors ML, asking about what is missing on Welcome page * Barry-Ni` to research other Ambassador programs for comparative purposes, and if possible find volunteers to help him with research * Carlos will publish topics for the next Ambassadors meeting at Aug. 17th, same hour. and some good points and infos that we talked about and we need to take care about it: * Not enough Media to distribute during events for 11.2 * Install fest works great but needs more attention * We decided that more interactions between Ambassadors is needed. * Need more than one method of channel to communicate with ambassadors * Not enough Media to distribute during events for 11.2 * Lack of reports after Ambassadors attend events * Next meeting - August, 17 sounds good for most part of the Ambassadors Team ? Some fellows said that we have no votes up there, then... I would like to invite everyone on this list to vote some topics to help with directions for the next meeting, please we only need "Yes" or "No" as answers, letting more details about topics that WE pickup as valid for the next meeting, because next meeting will not be if "does we need or not" will be "how to be do it" * Does we need to create templates for productive and collaborative reports? * Does we need to develop Ambassadors welcome and first steps landing page? * Does we need to take a look any free and available collaboration tool for Ambassadors program? * Does we like to have Ambassadors Uniform? * Does we believe is necessary to look around and have a brief idea of how other distros are working with similar Ambassadors program? * Does we need to know who is using openSUSE (corporations). Is this kind of information important for us? Last but not least, I would like to invite all Ambassadors to update their respective Users page, with a little introduction about them selfs to help us to know a little bit more about each other ;-) and be more productive next meeting. Hi All, Short report from the openSUSE 11.3 release party Budapest, Hungary from an ambassador point of view. organize - used doodle for registration and best schedule: http://tinyurl.com/opensuse-113 - from 21 registration 16 people came (good ratio), one of them traveled 400 km from Slovakia and one of them from London (don't ask me how or why :) but it was great - talked to Novell Hungary marketing and they gave me a room in Novell office (attendees liked it, they talked about it as a sanctuary:) and paid the food and drink (with 2 barrels of party beer) - all of them about 100 EUR - talked to a pizza delivery company that I will order and asked them the highest piority for my forthcoming order (this is a kind of on-demand food - no worries about too much or not enough food (arrived within 35 minutes) - created a menu card to help me about the order: http://picasaweb.google.hu/lh/photo/xlSoEVmnPdZOckeEpLMusQ?feat=directlink (printed at home on my pixma) - requested some marketing gifts from novell... they gave me balls - http://picasaweb.google.hu/lh/photo/PTOC5gkKamlNxZorLOwGgg?feat=directlink , pens http://picasaweb.google.hu/lh/photo/9gvovkMqWYc0v19lYINApg?feat=directlink and 8GB pendrives! http://picasaweb.google.hu/lh/photo/7s0So8mTiiBp3vXHZPlKJw?feat=directlink - unfortunately DVDs haven't arrived so we copied a specialized openSUSE 11.3 install kit (starts in Hungarian and you can install it from the pendrive without any further settings). Well... As I say in the first place, I first had to get away all my encounter feelings to that network. I'm of the ones that think that maybe its not as open as should be, with his privacy problems and stuff, but like Bryen say: "So, if you feel that in your region/market, Facebook works well, GO FOR IT!" Thats exactly the reason why I chose FB for this, because here in my country almost everybody its a heavy user of FB, and its the common way to call for meetings, and just get together. So, my intention its boost openSUSE and GoSVe taking advantage of the platform, because the common use here its to enter on that net at least 4 times per week, or at least that was the result of a quick marketing survey that I did. Quck survey for Conference attendees

As some of us get ready to prepare for upcoming openSUSE Conference in Nuremberg (October 20-23, 2010), I'm looking for a quick headcount of who will be there. 2 questions: 1) If you are a participant in openSUSE's Marketing Team or Ambassador Program, do you intend to be at openSUSE Conference? 2) If yes to 1), we are *thinking* about a Marketing hackfest day, the day before the Conference starts. (Tuesday, October 19). It would be an all-day event. Would you go? Getting some headcounts will help us to decide if there's enough people interested to make it happen. About the use of social networks

Hi people. Welly, happily I'm gaining more power and voice here in my country, small but at least the openSUSE word its now in the mouths of a lot of LUG's here, so because that I'm trying to get more in touch with the users and newbies around using the IRC, my blog and Twitter. Besides the encounter feelings about Facebook, I create a group [1] for all the people come together and take advantage of the platform options like forums and that. My question is, its ok to use FB?, or there is another way to accomplish this? The idea: - Put events - Send messages to members from while to while - A forum - Pictures and stuff If there is another option (more open, i think), or best way to get this please let me know. Hi, i came in lately and i'm italian and probably i'm not really inside of this. IRC is ok for me. More than time in my case the day would be a major concern. Saturday and Sunday would be perfect but i understand that wouldn't not work for others. I will try to fix my work in some way to partecipate at my best. I wait to listen from the others about this. Different regions have different needs. It's possible for you there to call the general important IRC (from the base), and let the people' area (America, Europe....) call local others or you call the others considering the 4 regions? I know that for you would be heavy, but in my case i would love to listen other situations and recover if i would lose one. Probably you will try a better way.
