[yast-devel] Overcommit - automatic checks via Git hooks

Hi, I found a quite interesting tool called Overcommit [1]. It provides an easy way for setting up Git commit hooks and provides some basic checking plugins. The nice feature of the Git commit hooks is that you can run some checks automatically and early in the development. For example with the commit hooks you can run Rubocop check automatically whenever a commit is created. And if the check fails the commit is not created. I can see "make Rubocop happy" commits quite often (happens to me as well), with Overcommit you can easily avoid that. I have tried several Overcommit checks: - Rubocop - runs Rubocop at "commit" - Rspec - runs the tests before "push" - Branch blacklist - can forbid direct commits to configured branches, e.g. "master" (forces using pull requests, avoids commits to master my mistake) - Commit message spellcheck - warns when there is a possible typo Check my blog post [2] for the details, esp. watch the recorded screencast where I wanted to show some mistakes which it can catch. Hi all, some time ago we discussed where and how we should share "Tips&Tricks" for YaST users and developers. IIRC there was no clear conclusion so I decided to start a wiki [1] to collect all our tricks we know or use. For now it's just a place for dumping your ideas, links, short howtos, etc... When we collect enough data we can probably split it to several categories or move it somewhere else. We just need the data first. I have added there some my tricks from my personal "knowledgebase" file. [yast-devel] Improving the pkg-bindings API

Hi all, I'd like to discuss how to improve the pkg-bindings API in YaST, more specifically the Pkg.ResolvableProperties(name, kind, version) call. But if you find some other pkg-bindings API calls difficult to use just ping me, we can improve more calls. There are basically two problems with Pkg.ResolvableProperties() call: - You cannot use any input filters, you can only filter by name, kind or version. That's quite limited, for the other cases you need to get *all* objects and filter the returned list. - The result contains all possible attributes for each object, even those you do not need in most cases (like the package description and summary, installed size, RPM size, full RPM name, vendor, ...). That is wasting the memory space. If you call Pkg.ResolvableProperties("", :package, "") in Leap with the online repositories enabled you will get a huge detailed list with about 40.000 (!) packages. And that requires quite a lot of memory and might freeze the installer as reported in [1]. A GraphQL Side Note ------------------- I was interested in some existing generic solution for this problem. And I found a quite nice GraphQL project. It can not only describe the search query but also describe the result (which objects or attributes you need in the response). Although there is a C++ library [2] or a Ruby library [3] in the end it looks like an overkill for the internal API. But if you would need to design some big and complicated REST API then you could consider it. See more details in [4] or in the specification [5]. (And it could be faster, it can return after finding the first matching item, it does not need to iterate over all objects.) Ruby Wrapper ------------ Unfortunately the C++ Pkg-bindings API does not allow specifying optional parameters (that's a limitation of the YaST component system) and cannot provide an object-oriented API so probably having a small Ruby wrapper would be nice: Yast::Resolvable.find(<filter_hash>) => Array<Resolvable>) Where the Resolvable would be an object wrapper for the pkg-bindings Hash. Examples: Yast::Resolvable.find(kind: :package, status: :selected) Yast::Resolvable.find(name: "package", kind: :package, status: :installed) Similarly for the existence check (just for completeness): Yast::Resolvable.any?(kind: :package, status: :selected) I'll propose some code snippets at GitHub, I think it will be better to discuss some details in a draft pull request with some real code... [yast-devel] yast2-branding-openSUSE missing in TW and 15.1: too small fonts, missing icons

Is this intentional? Did something replace it? If so, what? In Plasma on TW (host big41), and KDE3 (host big41) on 15.1, there are no icons in YaST2 Control Center. These were previously provided by yast2-branding-openSUSE. In 15.1/KDE3 (host big41) at least, both yast2 --qt and yast2 --gtk Control Center use the DE font size, but selections from it such as sw_single, ignore font size configured whether via qtcontrol or qt5ct or KControl. Fonts are too small, as if assuming DPI 96 instead of actual higher DPI. If I set Xft.dpi to the actual DE DPI, then fonts are as much too big as they were too small without it set. e.g., with 12pt desired/configured, without Xft.dpi fonts look around 9pt, while with matching DPI, they look around 15pt. In no case with KDE3 or TDE do font sizes in YaST2 Control Center match those in YaST2 Software. (They do in Plasma.) In 15.1/TDE (host GB250), fonts in Control Center are too small (same size as in KDE3), and ignore Xft.dpi. -- Evolution as taught in public schools is religion, not science. Team OS/2 ** Reg.
