[yast-devel] Overcommit - automatic checks via Git hooks

Hi, I found a quite interesting tool called Overcommit [1]. It provides an easy way for setting up Git commit hooks and provides some basic checking plugins. The nice feature of the Git commit hooks is that you can run some checks automatically and early in the development. For example with the commit hooks you can run Rubocop check automatically whenever a commit is created. And if the check fails the commit is not created. I can see "make Rubocop happy" commits quite often (happens to me as well), with Overcommit you can easily avoid that. I have tried several Overcommit checks: - Rubocop - runs Rubocop at "commit" - Rspec - runs the tests before "push" - Branch blacklist - can forbid direct commits to configured branches, e.g. "master" (forces using pull requests, avoids commits to master my mistake) - Commit message spellcheck - warns when there is a possible typo Check my blog post [2] for the details, esp. watch the recorded screencast where I wanted to show some mistakes which it can catch. The tool looks promising, I'll try using it for some time. If you want to try it as well check the blog post for the installation steps. Enjoy! Hi all, some time ago we discussed where and how we should share "Tips&Tricks" for YaST users and developers. IIRC there was no clear conclusion so I decided to start a wiki [1] to collect all our tricks we know or use. For now it's just a place for dumping your ideas, links, short howtos, etc... When we collect enough data we can probably split it to several categories or move it somewhere else. We just need the data first. I have added there some my tricks from my personal "knowledgebase" file. This is probably the less useful mail ever, since it just goes over a topic that has been explained over and over and still pops us in almost every single meeting. Let me say it again: 98% of the "undefined method `xxx' for nil:NilClass" errors are NOT related AT ALL to Ruby being dynamically typed and would NOT be prevented by the usage of a statically typed language. And the other side of the same recurring coin - we don't write unit tests as a replacement for the compiler checks. That's not the point, the goal or the intention of the unit tests. This time I will try to explain it with an example (something that already has been done, but I just felt impelled to do it one more time). Let's say you have this Ruby method that returns an object of type Device or nil if the device was not found find_device_by_name(name) And then you write this code dev = find_device_by_name("/dev/sda") puts dev.size If there is no /dev/sda that will result in one of those "undefined method `size` for nil:NilClass" that some people hate so much. Did it happen because Ruby is dynamically typed? NOT AT ALL. It happened because you didn't check for the situation in which the device is not there with some code like this. dev = find_device_by_name("/dev/sda") if dev puts dev.size else puts "No such device" end Let's do the same in an hypothetical typed Ruby in which there is nothing like nil. Now your find_device_by_name method will raise a NotFound exception instead of returning nil if the device is not there (the approach we use in statically typed languages). The first example will still fail, now with an uncaught NotFound exception. The static type checking performed by the compiler didn't save us from THE DEVELOPER ERROR and the result is pretty much the same - an exception thrown in the user's face. In this case, the correct solution is pretty similar to the real (dynamic) Ruby one begin dev = find_device_by_name("/dev/sda") puts dev.size rescue NotFound puts "No such device" end Both errors are the same error, a programmer error. Both errors happen during runtime, just the raised exception is different. In Ruby, the error is revealed in a slightly different way that it would be revealed in a static language. But that's the whole difference. Static type checking would not save you in 98% of the cases. What can save us in both cases? Comprehensive unit tests. Because they have a completely different goal from the checks performed by the compiler and they should spot a different kind of errors. Of course, that implies that whoever is writing the tests thinks in all possible situations (like the device not being there) and covers those situations with tests. That's why unit tests are a must in both dynamically and statically typed languages. If you think in your unit tests as a replacement of the static type checking... you will very likely not write the right unit tests. And please, stop assuming that every single "undefined method" error is caused by a missing type check. With some additional communication channel (Jangouts, Hangouts, Skype, whateverelse....) this looks like a great tool for pair programming, code discussions or learning. Hi all, as discussed some time ago, we should have a team page containing all the user names and nick names for the services we use (IRC, bugzilla, github, ....). I have created a wiki page for that [1]. Originally I wanted to have an yast.github.io page but the editing has a quite big overhead there (for every tiny change you have to open a pull request, review it and then merge). Wiki is much simpler. The page is still linked from [2] so it should not be hard to find it. If you still prefer the usual git workflow and using your favorite editor then you can use the wiki git URL [3], it's a Git repo as well. That means the history is tracked. If you by mistake mess it up you can easily revert back. Just push directly to "master" - no forks, no branches, no pull requests. Note: I have started with a single "Email/Bugzilla" column, so write the bugzilla email there. If that does not work for somebody we will have to split the column. ************************************************** Please, add yourselves to the table. ************************************************** Below the table there is a list of key areas and the contact persons. I didn't want to use the word "expert" as somebody (including me) might feel it as too strong. You do not have to be a superhero, it's enough if you just know something in that area or you know whom to ask. ;-) The idea is to have a list for the y2maintainer or for the whole team if you have a question. Again, think about the areas you know something, you are responsible for, or you feel you could provide help to somebody and fill it there. You do not have to fill up everything at the first try, you can add more data later. Obviously you can update it if you learn something new. It's a wiki after all.... Thank you a lot!
