Hi, When Christopher was in Prague, a few of us had a brainstorming about the need of having devel-documentation placed directly in a Yast/libstorage/linuxrc repository. There are no doubts that it's one of the most important parts of projects hosted at GitHub. All their howtos mention "create README[.md]" as the very first step. In fact, we'll have new hires in the team and in such situations, good documentation is one of the most important parts. Good documentation goes from very high level to lower and lower level. We have already summarized that in Yast Team Challenges, but the summary doesn't belong to this document as it's too detailed. That's why I'm putting it here as a WIP item and deleting it from that document: --- cut --- The README should at least describe the steps needed for maintenance (for a person without expert knowledge in the area) including: * What is the project good for - what does it actually do (and how), what it cannot do (unsupported scenarios), limitations * Links to the documentation, high level and low level descriptions (e.g. RFC, wikipedia articles, man pages, project documentation, openSUSE wiki), terminology * How to fetch the source code (if something outside Git is needed it should be mentioned) * What prerequisites are needed to build the sources (external libraries, gems, scripts, …) * How to build the sources (make/rake commands…) * How to setup a testing environment (e.g. iSCSI target for iSCSI client) * How to run the code to test a change (esp. needed for non trivial projects like linuxrc) * How to run automated tests * How to build a package for submission * How to submit the package (if it needs some manual steps) * Troubleshooting (how to solve typical problems) The README should be reasonably short, if some section is too long it should be moved to a separate document (or to GitHub wiki) and linked. --- cut --- The project consists of - Taking a decision where to go - How to get there - Implementing this important documentation Those two who, according to my knowledge, were working on this were Ladislav and Christopher, but there were not the only ones and a pilot project for READMEs has been done a few months ago by Martin. It's still not finished, but moving forward. Last week we implemented a prototype of a reusable component to manage services in YaST modules and applied it to yast-dns-server. So I updated the infamous "YaST service management" document[1] to show the two alternatives of usage of the new component. Feedback (from UI expert or anybody else) is appreciated so we can decide which option (labeled "A" and "B") in the document is better in general. [yast-devel] Switching features to "Ready" vs SCRUM

Hi, Today we had a discussion about switching features to state "Ready" when they are entering the sprint. In fact, I cannot do that as FATE requires me to assign a developer to it first. But in SCRUM people take tasks when they have time for them, which is definitely "after" sprint planning. So, what do you suggest to do? I could assign myself as a developer and for some features, I could assign a random/specific developer. On the other hand, in SCRUM "EVERYONE" in the team is responsible for delivering these selected tasks, so I should assign virtually everyone from the team. Any better ideas? Hi, I'm a little bit stuck between added-value and implementation details for the $SUBJECT bug. Long story short, we have dropped yast2-sshd package that used to implement configuration for sshd in AutoYast. Someone has tried an old AutoYast profile with <sshd/> settings and was surprised not to have sshd configured accordingly. They have asked for getting a warning / error report about it. There are several possibilities how to solve it with different level of benefit for the customer, maintenance effort in the future and cleanness of the solution. 1. Handle only sections known to be dropped Benefit: Inform about dropped support of <sshd/>, ...? Solution: Hard-coded list of dropped sections Effort: Low Maintenance: List of dropped modules Disadvantage: Doesn't report unknown sections 2. Compare the profile with what the currently installed system can configure Benefit: Inform about all unknown sections and also known sections that cannot be handled because of some missing Yast packages Solution: Using the current AutoYast functionality for parsing desktop files that maps "X-SuSE-YaST-AutoInstResource" entries to the profile (Y2ModuleConfig.ModuleMap.keys - Profile.current.keys - ["globals", "language", "networking", "user_defaults" ...]) Effort: Medium Maintenance: Hard-coded list of false-positives Disadvantage: The current implementation doesn't seem to recognize some entries, such as ["globals", "language", "networking", "user_defaults" ...], for instance, "language"/"keyboard" is hard-coded in clients/inst_autosetup.rb 3. Compare the profile with currently installed schema Benefit: Handle only unknown sections Solution: Parse /usr/share/YaST2/schema/autoyast/rng/profile.rng that should already contain all known sections Effort: Hard(er) Maintenance: Either hard-coded list of false-positives or schema Disadvantage: XML parser to read and understand profile.rng, but profile us not up to date anyway, e.g., <globals/> is missing there. I like the #2 the most, but fixing Yast to correctly evaluate some entries could lead into change of the current behaviour. There is too much hard-coded information now. So, what do you think? I don't want to over-engineer a simple thing but I'd like to bring some value too. [yast-devel] Adding the apply buttons to services

I started to implement this UI for yast-dns-server and I need some veteran's feedback. https://docs.google.com/drawings/d/1cVv4FY4tWRLAnMG96Cdfvw8asTNpzhFUdKn4TEq… Looks like most similar modules are implemented using Wizard (sometimes through CWM::DialogTree), which means only 3 buttons, namely back, abort and next. For dns-server I could abuse the slot of the back button (seems it wouldn't be the first time[1]). But looking at the screenshots at https://docs.google.com/document/d/1OA77GehzFKuoJWm0weN-bCi1BjfR2VAQNWoE1OO… it looks that wouldn't be a generic solution, since I can see some "back" buttons there (most of them disabled, but still a problem). Any chance of getting my "apply" button in a generic way keeping the usage of Wizard and CWM::DialogTree? [yast-devel] Added openSUSE_13.2_Update target to YaST:Head

Hi all! If you use the Yast packages from YaST:Head (you should ;-)) on 13.2 you might have seen a conflict for packages using libzypp, like yast2-pkg-bindings or libyui-*-pkg packages. The problem is that there was released a libzypp update for 13.2 which contains a new *.so library. That means it is incompatible with the original package. The solution is to build YaST:Head against the openSUSE_13.2_Update repository. The question is whether we still need to build the packages for the original openSUSE_13.2 (without updates). Using the latest YaST packages on an "old" 13.2 sounds weird to me, if you want the edge YaST packages I suppose you also want the base system to be up to date. *** IMPORTANT! *** So if nobody objects I'd remove the openSUSE_13.2 target to save the OBS resources, it does not make sense to build the packages twice. I'd remove it this Friday (Apr 24) around 14:00 CEST. Do not forget to update your YaST:Head repository URL [1]! *** IMPORTANT! *** Of course, you can use the openSUSE_13.2_Update YaST packages on the original 13.2, the packages will be the same except the packages mentioned at the beginning. So we basically move the package conflict from updated 13.2 to unpatched 13.2, that should be fine I think... Hi, the package yast2-metapackage-handler.rpm (AKA One Click Install) has so far resided in the repository https://github.com/yast/yast-metapackage Note the irregularity between the repo name and the RPM name. It is because I was stupid when creating the repo back when Benji Weber coded the module. Now the stupidity has biten back in the form of an L3 bug: https://bugzilla.suse.com/show_bug.cgi?id=926313 where a fix that is in 13.2 already did not make it to SLE 12. The internal Jenkins is simply missing a project for this package. I have renamed the repo on GitHub to https://github.com/yast/yast-metapackage-handler which is safe™ because it will continue to be accessible under the old name. Hi all, I prepared the VNC setup for the sprint review meeting we had this morning and I'd like to share the knowledge. I used an openSUSE-13.2 system but I guess a SLE12 system should work as well. Here is the How To: 1) install "xorg-x11-Xvnc" package (in my case it was already installed by default, just to be sure...) 2) run "vncserver :1" command (as a normal user, root is not needed), the number is the VNC session number - you can run more VNC sessions on the same machine 3) at the first run it asks for the VNC password to use, set also a password for the "view only" mode 4) open the VNC port in firewall: - "yast2 firewall" -> Allowed services -> select "VNC" in the "Service to allow" combo box -> press "Add" on the right side, save the changes - or manually add the "vnc-server" value to the FW_CONFIGURATIONS_EXT variable in /etc/sysconfig/SuSEfirewall2 file and restart the firewall ("rcSuSEfirewall2 restart") 5) connect to the VNC session using "vncviewer -shared <server_host_name>:1" (install "tigervnc" package if the command is missing in your system) 6) on the server use "vncserver -list" to list the running VNC sessions, use "vncserver -kill :1" to finish the VNC session Notes ===== - the VNC server stores the passwords in ~/.vnc/passwd file, use "vncpasswd" to change it - the "-shared" option for vncviewer is crucial, without it only one client could be connected at the same time - the new started VNC session will use the default desktop, you can override this by setting the WINDOWMANAGER environment variable, this can be useful if you want to run something less fancy than KDE if the network bandwidth is limited, e.g. "WINDOWMANAGER=icewm vncserver :1" - the clipboard is by default shared between the VNC session and the X11 server, you can disable that in the "VNC config" window which is displayed in the VNC session after start (you can start it manually by "vncconfig" if you close it) - last but not least: VNC connections are NOT secure by default [1] (i.e. do not run plain VNC on a public server, in an internal network still consider running the shared VNC session in a separate VM) HTH [1] http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Virtual_Network_Computing#Security -- Ladislav Slezák Appliance department / YaST Developer Lihovarská 1060/12 190 00 Prague 9 / Czech Republic tel: +420 284 028 960 lslezak(a)suse.com SUSE -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: yast-devel+unsubscribe(a)opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: yast-devel+owner(a)opensuse.org
