[yast-devel] First steps in the new tutorial

Writing the new tutorial about developing a YaST module from scratch is being more time consuming than I expected (and I actually didn't expected it to be fast). At least, there is a first draft of the first two "lessons" here: http://ancorgs.github.io/yast-journalctl-tutorial/ As you can see, I'm using the same repository for both the tutorial itself (in the gh-pages branch) and the example code (tagging every step in git). I like it this way because everything is self-contained and (hopefully) easy to follow. As a bonus, we have full control over the appearance, which I used to mimic the YaST home page's look and feel. Please, read and provide feedback. Hi, I have seen that there is a lot of old YaST documentation on: http://doc.opensuse.org/projects/YaST/ which has been stopped after 11.3. Is there any plan to continue it and how to continue ? I am just asking because there is really useful stuff for AutoYaST which has been written by Uwe. So, shall I put it into other AutoYaST documentation ? Hi, after the announcement of my ideas for a Storage Redesign in YaST I present now the first draft of the API that libstorage will provide. Remember that this API should be used by all YaST modules using functions from yast2-storage so far since the infamous target map will vanish. Device Graph ------------ The basic data structure is a directed graph of device objects as already explained (https://github.com/aschnell/libstorage-bgl-eval/wiki) Compared to the target map there are a few new objects, e.g. PartitionTable, Encryption and Filesystem. How to get a Device Graph ------------------------- Libstorage works with several device graphs, mainly the "probed" and the "current". Somehow you will have access to the main storage objects and can use that to get a device graph: DeviceGraph* device_graph = storage->getCurrent(); Manipulating the Device Graph ----------------------------- There are "constructors" for all concrete objects (e.g. Ext4 and Swap are concrete while Filesystem is abstract). Disk* sda = Disk::create(device_graph, "/dev/sda"); The device_graph is the owner of the objects. Creating disks will of course only be allowed in the image/KIWI mode. Most objects will be created by calling member functions of the parent: PartitionTable* gpt = sda->createPartitionTable(GPT); Partition* sda1 = gpt->createPartition("/dev/sda1"); // parameter will change Manipulating is done with member functions, e.g.: filesystem->addMountPoint("/boot"); There is also a low level interface where the vertices and edges of the graph are manipulated directly, e.g.: PartitionTable* gpt = Gpt::create(device_graph); // creates vertex Using::create(device_graph, sda, gpt); // creates edge Partition* sda1 = Partition::create("/dev/sda1"); // creates vertex Subdevice::create(device_graph, gpt, sda1); // creates edge But this low level interface should be reserved for the expert partitioner if needed at all. I do not think that we will use it for SLE-12 tests, but maybe it will be used for 13.2. No, it's not a movie (yet). What ---- As you know, Zombie Killer aims to replace Ops and Builtins in the code converted from YCP, automatically and safely: https://github.com/yast/zombie-killer Lada recently introduced Rubocop, which can detect a lot of style issues or even bugs, and autocorrect some of them. We have enabled it in Travis for some repositores already: http://lists.opensuse.org/yast-devel/2014-11/msg00066.html Obviously there are similarities between these projects, and luckily, both are based on the same parser library. So Lada has made a prototype of a YaST specific Rubocop plugin, which incorporates big parts of Zombie Killer: https://github.com/yast/rubocop-yast How --- Today we have discussed how to go forward with these. 1. Port Zombie Killer to Rubocop. Rubocop is a well working platform matching closely the aims and even the implementation of ZK. 2. Apply it continuously. Unlike with the switch from YCP, there is no reason to wait for the Zombie Cop to be "complete". We want to implement small features and apply them piece by piece. 3. Distinguish Strict and Tolerant modes. For newly written libraries we want to treat all zombies as offenses but for code converted from YCP we want to convert the ones which are safe to do so and shut up about the rest. 4. Package as a gem only. So far we do not see a need to build a RPM. The package will run in Travis, not in OBS. 5. Measure and present the effects. To make sure that we spend effort effectively, we will produce statistics of zombie counts and their evolution across time, for individual repos and all of YaST. Apply to individual repositores, not across all of YaST?? We are not so confident about (6) and want your opinion about this. On the other hand, some cops,like the logging one, may be a bit aggressive and require fixups to the old tests. There may even be bugs, and those could go unnoticed for a long time for little used and tested modules. So we think it is more appropriate to apply the Zombie Cops (or any cops, actually) only when touching a module for another reason. You will object that it may result of many code changes, which is hard to review. But that is solved by having separate cops for each kind of change, and applying them one per each commit. Hi all, As I have already mentioned during our status call yesterday, I was fixing yast2-schema to build (and build faster) and during code review, Ladislav pointed out that there is an old FIXME in spec file: # FIXME: drop yast2-all-packages some day This package, yast2-all-packages, is just a meta-package - expected to contain list of all Yast packages and it does nothing but installing all listed Yast packages. This meta-package is used for yast2-schema, which needs all Yast packages with some AutoYast support. I haven't found anything else though: https://github.com/search?q=yast2-all-packages+user%3Ayast&type=Code&utf8=%… So, I propose to drop yast2-all-packages as we have already covered it's functionality elsewhere: - Automatic build of all Yast packages incl. running test (Jenkins) - Automatic rebuild in case of change in any package that a particular Yast package requires (IBS/OBS) - Overview of which Yast packages are available (PkgManager, GitHub) Initially, I would have to copy the list of packages from yast2-all-packages to yast2-schema and then drop those without AutoYast support. Hi, while reassigning yast-maintainers bugs I noticed that once again the maintainer/bugowner information is inconsistent: The content of the MAINTAINER file in git differs from the output of 'osc maintainer' or 'osc bugowner'. This leads to confusion. We had this problem before and apparently fail to solve the inconsistency long term. So I propose to drop the MAINTAINER file in git and rely on osc. [yast-devel] First running prototype of yast2-journal

Yesterday I published the first running prototype of yast2-journal. Just enough to support a tutorial about creating a new module. http://software.opensuse.org/package/yast2-journal https://github.com/ancorgs/yast-journal I will concentrate on writing the tutorial now. In the meantime, any feedback about the UI or the code is, of course, highly appreciated. The module obviously displays more information when executed as root, although it works as a regular user too. Before being ready for the masses it still lacks some details like colors for the entries based on the priority or detailed view of an entry. But, to be honest, I think it already looks better than view_anylog. We have been discussing the current usability problems in all modules that manages servers taking this dns-server screenshot as starting point. http://paste.opensuse.org/51547407 We mainly have two problems: - Users expect different effects on running/stopped after changing enabled/disabled (and vice versa). - Sometimes is not so clear when settings should be written to configuration files and when that configuration should be applied to a running server (service reload). I'll try to summarize a possible solution after listening to QA team and SUSE's UX team. For details check [1] 1) Change the UI for enabling/disabling. We don't need a box with radio buttons. It would it better to have a single checkbox. [X] Start DNS server when booting 2) Remove the "reload" button in its current form 3) Add a button [Apply current settings] which works exactly like "ok" but without quitting. Initially disabled. Enabled once the user has changed something. 4) Use pop-ups to ask the user about their intentions when saving changes or running the server. A subtle but important detail - the goal of the pop-ups is exposing functionality and offering options, not warning about something that some users can perceive as problems (and others don't). 4.a) User changed any configuration and clicked on "Start Server Now". Show dialog with "changes are pending" message and two options: "Cancel" and "Save Settings and Start Server Now". 4.b) User changed any configuration and clicked "ok" or "apply": First of all, save settings to configuration files. Next step depends on current situation: a) Server is not running Ask the user if they would like to start the server now b) Server is running and “start when booting” is marked Reload the server c) Server is running and “start when booting” is not marked Ask the user if they would like to stop the server now. If they decide to keep it running, reload the server. What do you think? I'd say it makes a lot of sense. But I'm not sure how the reloading of setting is currently managed in most cases and if somebody could complain about the settings being "immediately" effective on already running services. Cheers. A first prototype of the systemd journal reading module is available at: https://github.com/ancorgs/yast-journal It still does not include a Rakefile, so you'll have to do something like this to play with it. Y2DIR=src/ /usr/sbin/yast2 journal It took me a little bit longer than expected because: - I have been going back and forward with the UI design/implementation. - I tried to mimic ActiveRecord as much as possible when querying the journal. Turns out it was not a brilliant decision (as stated in the comments of the SystemdJournal::Query class). I'm sure the code contains a lot of newbie mistakes (specially in the UI part) so let's find them all before we start writing a tutorial with that code as a base :-) I implemented the classes for retrieving and processing the journal entries as pure ruby classes living in /lib. But I'm not sure if it's a good decision. Wouldn't it be better to implement them as a module so it can be accessed from other programming languages? There are still a lot of usability problems and I still need a way to make all this information visible [1], but it's just the first prototype. I'm more worried right now about the architecture (lib vs module) and the libyui usage mistakes/patterns. [yast-devel] Yast and Rubocop?

Hi all, I looked at Rubocop (a Ruby code scanner) [1] and tried to use it in the registration module to see if it could be used in Yast to improve the code quality. I have summarized my findings in a blog post [2], in short: - it is highly configurable - it can find also some semantic issues - it suggests how to fix the found issues - it can auto correct many issues (esp. indentation and white space) You can see the found issues and fixes in this pull request [3]. Many issues were just harmless indentation or white space issues, but some were quite critical like this "private" attribute misuse [4]. Majority of the issues were autocorrected by Rubocop itself, I just reviewed the changes and committed each fix in a separate commit to see what was the problem and how it was fixed. What do you think about Rubocop and Yast? Would it make sense to use it globally for all modules? What would be the pros and cons for you?
