Hi, when testing openSUSE 11.1/SLES 11 I came across a rather curious situation: many modules have already switched their label from Abort/OK(Accept, Finish...) to the style guide compliant Cancel/OK label. However in every case there is a third, inactive "Back" button included. This doesn't make sense as there is nothing to go back and the dialog is just an overview. I suppose this is due to many of you using wizard.ycp as base template for creating your module. What do you think about using the button box (http://lizards.opensuse.org/2008/08/28/button-order-in-yast-trying-to-make-…) instead of the buttons of wizard.ycp? In my opinion this would have the following advantages: * consistent button order in pop ups and in the module * user would not need to deal with an inactive button * button order in YaST would be consistent with the desktop used by the user What do you think about that issue? Hi everybody, after some discussion and work I would like to present a first draft of a YaST style guide to you: http://en.opensuse.org/Image:Ysg.pdf The intention of the style guide is NOT to dictate every pixel in every module but to make some basic actions and behaviors consistent which increases usability. The work was mostly done by Lukas (locilka) and me. Nonetheless this is just a draft and I would like to see it as a base for further discussion. First of all because two people cannot represent the large variety of opinions you all have and what all of you consider as acceptable. A style guide which is not supported by you, the developers, is IMHO useless (and we already have one useless style guide :-)) So: * Do you think the extent of the current draft is sufficient? * Which issues are missing? * Which ones should be removed? * Are there any contentwise issues you object/agree upon? Greetings All, Currently in factory Product::name, Product::distversion etc all return an empty string. Probably because there is no product installed. Is it planned to have products installed once zypp supports them again, or will Product.ycp obtain its data from somewhere else? Or is Product.ycp being dropped completely and I should use something else? At present I am using Product to determine which instructions from a YMP match the installed system. Hi, are there any objections to change FormatSizeWithPrecision to return "1 MB" instead of "1024 kB" and alike? Hi, yast hackers In the light of bug #374628 (https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=374628) just a quick reminder that there is a tool that might help you not only to fix the typos Benji has found, but also to locate some more misspelled words in your modules, or inconsistent spelling in the texts ( e.g. ipv6 vs. IPv6) Just run: 'make spellcheck' or 'y2tool pot-spellcheck' in the root directory of your module. It will list all misspelled words in the strings of your module and suggest suitable alternatives. It uses ispell (?) so it gets confused by or doesn't even know very technical words such as 'smb', 'umount', 'strace', but in general it deals with typos quite well. I've just found ~5 more not listed in the bug above in yast2-network ... Hi, looking over the SCR agents in yast2-storage I recognised that run.swapon_s is just a inferior implementation of .proc.swaps (although with different return value). Also run.swapon_s seems to be unused. Hi hackers, Short: Please take your modules and rename the contained .scr files after the paths they serve: .foo.bar.baz -> foo_bar_baz.scr Long: in Alpha 3, SCR can be lazy. That is, it will not read all the *.scr files to register all the agents at the first opportunity. Instead, it guesses which file an agent is defined in and reads only that file. Only when that fails it does the big sweep. The aim is to reduce startup time, and thanks to Michael Meeks for bringing that topic up. It only works if the files are named accordingly. Most of them are but a major exception is .sysconfig.foo which are currently in cfg_foo.scr . And then all the other ones here and there. (In Alpha3, yast2-core-2.16.39 looks for foo.bar.baz.scr which does not fit the way most scr files are named now. I have just submitted .41 which uses underscores. Also, a warning "Scripting agent sweeping" will be logged when it has to give up and walk the disk.) I tried to measure the actual improvement, but did not get very far(*). To begin with, there are environment variables to restore the old behavior so that we can do any measuring at all: Y2SCRSWEEP=1 sweeps as soon as SCR is called Y2SCRNOSORT=1 does not sort the scr files (normally, when sweeping I try to reduce the penalty by sorting the files according to their inode number, hoping that it will result in sequential disk head movement) (*) I measured it this way, but got no difference :-/ Either this is all useless or I can blame VirtualBox. Repeat several times: echo 3 > /proc/sys/vm/drop_caches; time Y2SCRSWEEP=1 Y2SCRNOSORT=1 yast2 nfs help and then with the new code: echo 3 > /proc/sys/vm/drop_caches; time yast2 nfs help Next I will try on a real machine. (bnc#328822) Automatic CD/DVD eject in yast - there is a new check button in the media change popup which can enable automatic eject when a CD/DVD medium is requested. (fate#301228) Users Configuration =================== Yast must know all system users _before_ starting the installation to not allow creating a user which will be created later automatically in RPM post-install script. The list is hardcoded and generated from RPMs in autobuild. YAXA (Yet Another XML Agent) ============================ Jiri Suchomel has implemented yet another generic XML agent because the current agents are not generic enough. The question is in which package it should be included (yast2 or ???), the dependencies of the new agent need to be evaluated. Main ideas: Provide a ZYpp api to save them (you can load /etc/locks now). Main problem: apps need to save locks by package name/edition. I'm trying to get the value of a YUI TextEntry (all in Perl). I created the TextEntry via: my $TextInput = TextEntry("Some Text",""); This let me add it to the VBOX: my $c = VBox( $TextInput, PushButton("&OK") ); UI->OpenDialog($c); UI->UserInput(); UI->CloseDialog(); However, you can't get the value from either: $value = $TextInput->Value; // Most Logical $value = UI->QueryWidget( $TextInput, "Value" ); // Second Most Logical What do I have to do in order to do this? I have not found them used anywhere in the code (even the only links Google found were to the YaST documentation), and their usability is now limited, since we do not have the help on the left... [yast-devel] Starting repo management from the pkg manager

Hi all! Many users complain why there are two separate modules for managing repositories and packages. They want to add/refresh/enable/disable/... repositories from the package manager widget. Currently you have to close the package manager module, start the repository manager, do the action you want and start the package manager again. It takes a long time and you have click too many times. Adding the repository management functions to all package manager widgets requires a lot of work in each UI frontend. I created a small patch which can start the repository manager module directly from the package manager, almost all the changes are on the YCP level. Pros: + simple implementation, the patch has just few lines Cons: - the repository manager is not visually integrated to the package manager See the attached patch, install patched "packager" and "qt-pkg" yast modules. The patch adds a new menu entry in the package manager widget, click "Extra" -> "Repository manager..." or press Ctrl + M shortcut. (This feature can be made more visible if needed, e.g. add a button into the "Repository" filter or something like that...) What do you think about this solution? Hi, please avoid the use of the function ByteToHumanString from Partition.ycp and partition_defines.ycp. Use instead the function FormatSizeWithPrecision from String.ycp so I can clean up the code in storage. Solver add prerequisites for this packages. Some prerequisite cannot be download and if use this new action (instead of retry or abort or simply ignore) program try make for user new prerequisites combination without previously failed package. For programmers that uses libzypp it mean, that they must (if support this action in callback) catch from commit call exception, disable this package instalation for solver, rerun solver and try again commit (of course with any user responses if really want new plan or if not possible install without this package then some as do standard). Hi! Because of bug https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=304964 I have modified desktop files for all modules which are residing in the YaST subversion repository. I committed the changes (just added one line) to SVN trunk, but not to autobuild. Please, submit your packages to autobuild for openSUSE 11.0 Beta1. If you maintain any YaST module not residing in the YaST subversion repository, change your .desltop files manually by adding line StartupNotify=true Thanks in advance! Hello, is it possible to Update the YaST2-pkg-bindings in repository to => 2.16.17 (x86-64) ? Then i can Install and test YaST2-online-update ;). The next question, is it possible to config openSUSE Updater ? I found nothing ? Hi, This has been discussed a few times before, with regard to the buttons order; having a specialized API for dialogs. There is one more good reason to it: accessibility software. Hi, I've decided to follow suggestions in my y2log that made an advertisement for the new 'process' agent. My first thoughts were just to replace .background with .process and see what would happen ;) It doesn't need to be emphasized much that this will probably not work at all (hope dies last [but it still dies!]).
