No compose characters possible with asian language setting

Hello! I'm currently using SuSE 9.0 pro for both german and japanese input. This works fine so far, by setting the variables LC_CTYPE to ja_JP.UTF-8 and LANG to de_DE.UTF-8, but nevertheless I experienced a problem: With the LC_CTYPE set to japanese and an input method running (currently kinput2), I cannot type european language compose characters any more - at least the ones I used to produce with two sequent keystrokes ( ´ and e for é for example). The rest of my (german) keyboard layout works all fine, and with LC_CTYPE set to german, é's, à's, ô's, etc pose no problem, but then, of course, I cannot input japanese... This problem seems also to be existent for other language settings that use an input method, I tried it out with a friend who uses chinese input (also on SuSE 9.0 pro). We (my friend and I) are currently writing an article about asian language input with StarOffice/OOo, so we would really appreciate any help or hint concerning this problem. Thanks. Marcel Boeing

Hi Mike I don't know whether this is a know issue or not, but Google didn'd find a matching thread: xim: CVS version 1.5 [...] zh_CN*) # Simplified Chinese [...] case $tmplang in zh_CN.UTF-8|zh_CN.utf-8) chinput -gb & ;; *) chinput & ;; esac [...] I have the followig system settings (to combine german and chinese): RC_LANG="de_CH.UTF-8" RC_LC_CTYPE="zh_CN.UTF-8" Problem with chinput: 1) There is no need for an '&', it automatically goes to background 2) Option '-gb' results in: "Basic: Cannot open font "\ "-misc-zysong18030-medium-r-normal-16-000c0iso10646-1" 3) Startup *must* be: LANG=zh_CN LC_ALL=zh_CN chinput Otherwise it does not work! - without "LANG=..." -> Segmentation fault - With "LANG=zh_CN.UTF-8 ..." -> "Can't Open Input Method Service" Any idea? Other experiances? Could you correct it? BTW: Mike Fabian: Do you allow me to publish your xim file on my homepage (will be marc.waeckerlin.org/linux/i18n.php when it's finished)? You should be able to perform this with 'recode'. Can't remember the command line sequence (been a while), but the man pages should specify the correct HTML/XML identifiers. convert UTF-8 to \uXXXX

Hi, which tool can convert chars, that are not in the ascii set, from in UTF-8 to &#xXXXX; or \uXXXX as used in HTML/XML? Can iconv do that? (I want to encode complete files, not single characters) Thanks in advance, Rowdy

No skim panel in KDE 3.3

Hi, everybody, in my KDE 3.3 the skim panel doesn't show up in the system tray. If I start "scim-panel-kde" the two processes scim-panel-kde and skim are running but I see no panel. If I change the scim config file to the skim panel it's the same. The GTK panel works fine. Does it work for somebody? I use the packages from ftp.suse.com/pub/projects/m17n/9.1/. Andrej
