No compose characters possible with asian language setting

Hello! I'm currently using SuSE 9.0 pro for both german and japanese input. This works fine so far, by setting the variables LC_CTYPE to ja_JP.UTF-8 and LANG to de_DE.UTF-8, but nevertheless I experienced a problem: With the LC_CTYPE set to japanese and an input method running (currently kinput2), I cannot type european language compose characters any more - at least the ones I used to produce with two sequent keystrokes ( ´ and e for é for example). The rest of my (german) keyboard layout works all fine, and with LC_CTYPE set to german, é's, à's, ô's, etc pose no problem, but then, of course, I cannot input japanese... This problem seems also to be existent for other language settings that use an input method, I tried it out with a friend who uses chinese input (also on SuSE 9.0 pro). We (my friend and I) are currently writing an article about asian language input with StarOffice/OOo, so we would really appreciate any help or hint concerning this problem. Thanks. Marcel Boeing

kinput2 and dead keys

Hi, I just install my brand new SuSE 9.1 Pro on my computer, and SCIM not working. I already tried to put KDE locale to Chinese, but SCIM also not working. My question: 1. Can I have english locale with Working chinese (simplified) input. 2. UTF-8 enooding can't print GB2312

Hi, as adviced by Mike I set my encoding to en_US.UTF-8. I can happily type chinese character, and print it. (Open Office can't be used for SCIM?) but the problem is, I CAN open document with chinese character from my old SuSE installation, but CAN NOT print it. I believe it's because in the past I used something like zh_cn.gb2312. is there anyway I can read & print my old file. or, is there any web site I can read about all the chinese problem & how to fix it in SuSE 9.1. thanks. =========================================================================================== "Gabung INSTANIA, dapatkan XENIA. Unable to get Euro Sign across remote X connection

Hi There are a number of suse 8.2 thin clients and a number of suse 8.0 thin clients connecting to a server via a remote X session which is running Suse 8.2. The 8.0 machines can all display the Euro sign when working on the server - the 8.2 machines cannot. They both have identical UK language and keyboard settings and the /etc/sysconfig/language settings are set the same. Ironically running X locally produces the reverse result in that 8.2 can display the euro sign in programs like OpenOffice and Mozilla while 8.0 machines cannot. I also tried logging in as the other person but that made no difference - so I am convinced that the problem lies with the individual machines and their setup - whether it is missing software or a configuration problem. Can anybody help? Simon.

SUSE 9.1 : arabic websites illegible

hallo, a temporaray workaround seems to exist. to recall, what worked initially, and what didn't: bad sites were: http://www.frankfurtbook-arabguest.net/index(a).html www.qantara.de here: arabic a good site was: www.bbc.com here: arabic The websites which were "bad" explicitly request a specific font (Times New Roman in the case of Frankfurt Book Fair and Tahoma in the case of Qantara). Since those fonts weren't installed they had to be replaced by something else and the replacement mechanism does not work well. First, it used KacstTitleL, an outline font - totally illegible. After installing the ae font bundle from www.arabeyes.org the situation became gradually better, but now there were sometimes two different fonts with different baselines in one word. Still mostly illegible. Since I have a dual boot configuration I copied the fonts from MS Windows and the "bad" websites now view allright. The "good" ones (like bbc) already came out right after installing the ae font bundle from arabeyes. i am happy as i can read my web sites , but not happy as this seems to require Microsoft stuff (which i always want to avoid...) even though i used suse 9.1 professional! i am not amused, since i had no problems at all with arabic web sites under suse 8.2! best petra -- Petra Dünges Übersetzungen aus dem Arabischen Waldwiese 13 D-66123 Saarbrücken Tel.: 0049-(0)681-3905847

SUSE 9.1 : arabic websites illegible

hallo, 1. How to reproduce: with mozilla and konqueror for example the following websites are not rendered properly http://www.frankfurtbook-arabguest.net/index(a).html http://www.qantara.de/webcom/show_softlink.php/_c-339/_lkm--1/i.html?PHPSES… 2. This is not working: when i select in mozilla edit/preferences/appearance/fonts then for Arabic the default is serif (for serif,sans-serif,cursive,fantasy,monospace) with this default the websites are totally illegible: they have some pseudo-arabic feeling, but the fonts are looking very strange. when i select Arabic Newspaper thngs are sowmhow better: I can read some things, but not all - in arabic the letters have to be joined sometimes and this does not work in some cases. sometimes a letter is put below the line. the "arabguest"-site looks fairly well but even there this problem appears and one letter is replaced by something strange the "qantara" site looks much worse i have tried to select other things besides Arabic Newspaper but nothing seems to solve the problem as far as i know i have installed all arabic fonts that came with suse 9.1 with suse linux 8.2 there was not problem at all for these websites. and there was no special configuration necessary. i still have this linux version, but on another computer which now has severe problems with its hard disk . so i cannot rely on it. thanks a lot for every hint. petra dünges -- Petra Dünges Übersetzungen aus dem Arabischen

I installed suse9.1 personal version, and also installed some Chinese True Type fonts, the fonts file are obtained from suse 9.1 professional disk. I enable anti-aliasing fonts by issue 'kcmshell fonts' and check the box, and in fact it is already enabled by default. my problem is the Chinese fonts looks very fuzzy in konqueror or other program, but the English letters looks very well. SuSE 9.1 ISO-2022-JP, zh_CN.UTF-8?

Hi, recently I upgraded from SuSE 8.2 to SuSE 9.1. I would like to write japanese texts using ISO-2022-JP. To start kinput I use the following script (canna server is already running): ----- start ----- ENC=eucjp #ENC=UTF-8 LANG=ja_JP.$ENC XMODIFIERS='@im=kinput2' mlterm 1>/dev/null 2>&1& LANG=ja_JP.$ENC kinput2 -xim -kinput -canna 1>/dev/null 2>&1& ----- end ----- Under SuSE 8.2 it was possible to use ISO-2022-JP and ja_JP.eucjp together and it worked fine. So the mlterm displayed japanese texts correctly, that used the character set ISO-2022-JP. After upgrading to SuSE 9.1 I used the same script, but I cannot read the texts any longer. All that I get displayed is like this: ^[$B;d$O^[(B This is how the characters are stored, but why doesn't mlterm display the japanese characters using the configuration as shown above? When I write some text and save it, then it is not stored in the ISO-2022-JP format. When I use UTF-8 in my script, everything works fine. Then I can read and write japanese in the UTF-8 format. But how do I configure my system to use ISO-2022-JP? My second question is: Is there a way to use xcin with the LOCALE set to zh_CN.UTF-8 (read and write simplified Chinese, using UTF-8)? When I set LOCALE to this value then xcin always exits with the error message, that there is no such encoding available. I experienced this problem under both SuSE 8.2 and SuSE 9.1.
