My environment:
* SuSE Linux Profession 8.2 installed in Japanese
* KDE + GNOME desktops are installed and used from the SuSE 8.2 distro.
* unedited .profile
* By default LANG = "ja_JP" in my user environment
* By default LC_ALL is undefined in my user environment
* Mozilla is installed from the distro and Japanese support there has
been great.
* Konqueror from the distro is installed and again Japanese support has
been great.
* VI's Japanese support has been great, too.
The problem: When I run Ximian the menus appear perfectly in Japanese
with Japanese fonts, BUT:
* when I go to create a new message and type Japanese the text entered
appears as empty squares.
* Worse, when I read any Japanese email all of the Japanese text appears
as empty squares.
* Even worse still, when I read Japanese email the places where things
like "To:", "From:", "Subjust:" would be is replaced with empty squares
that obviously contain the Japanese versions of that text.
* The summary page is unreadable because all of the Japanese text is
empty squares.
I read a past thread titled "[m17n] Non-KDE applications in Japanese"
and followed those recommendations (eg. copy /etc/gtkrc.ja to
~/.gtkrc... I further softlinked ~/.gtkrc.mine and ~/.gtkrc.ja to ~/.gtkrc.
What can be done to make this work?
PS: I have a similar issue with Japanese support and the JDK... I just
can't see any Japanese text in any Applets. :(
