SK8N SUSE 9.3 problems

Hello, I am trying to install SUSE 9.3 on Asus SK8N motherboard running Opteron. I use the built-in Promise SATA controller with two disks in IDE mode. I was able to perfectly run SuSE 9.1 on this system for a long, long time. Now, with SuSE 9.3 I am not even able to get through the installation. It seems that the disk access causes the installation to hang sooner or later. When files are being copied the installation just freezes. It seems that this problem is not specific to SUSE. Any other distro with 2.6 kernel that I tried freezes in the same way as SUSE. Does anyone have a success story installing SUSE 9.3 on a similar setup? And also, is there some way that I can save kernel messages during installation? Thanks, Marcin Zalewski

xine on AMD64

Hi I'm using SuSE professional 9.3 on a AMD64. To be able to watch DVD's, I compiled Xine from sources with the needed packages. Compiling xine-lib and xine-ui doesn't make any problems, but after launching xine, I have the foolowing error message: Cannot open display "*". Segmentation fault. After I changed the DISPLAY Variable to 127.0.0.1 and exported it, the first error message doesn't appear, but I get the segfault again. The interesting thing is that DVD's could be read in kaffeine without problems, so I think the problem is in xine-ui. Has anybody a hint?? Thanx Al

screen config problem

Hi, I posted this question a month ago but had to go to London and didn't resolve the issue, but I hope you will bare with me on this one. Over this last month I have been trying, but no solution. I have a new AMD64 laptop from TPG, but TPG are very secretive about the contents of the box and refuse to discuss Linux (though it makes no sense to sell a 64 bit machine with XP ! ) However, XP tells me that the screen resolution is 1280 x 800 at 60 Hz and the adapter is an SiS, model: 651_661FX_741_760_760GX_M661FX_M661MX_M741_M on PCI bus 1, device 0, function 0 64 MB of the main RAM appears to be used for the video The problem is that 1. SuSE 9.1 install starts properly (full screen, good quality graphics with menus, edit boxes etc. 2. internet connects and tests correctly 3. downloads latest SuSE updates automatically 4. lots of software appears to be correctly installed 5. system reboots from hard disk 6. requests, and achieves, setup for root and for a user 7. system reboots and requests loggin 8. system then says that it cannot determine monitor characters, and asks if I want to configure manually? Note: up until this point the system has had zero problem with displaying windows, graphics etc. Something in the initial SuSE code "gets it right". 8.(cont) If I configure manually or not the system then jumps into some ridiculous mode of 0 x 0 pixels. Thus, it appears that the SuSE programmer requests the screen dimensions, and receives 0 x 0 and fails to check the values, and simply attempts to use 0 x 0, thereby sending the system into convoltions. I can only switch off the electricty at this point. When I try to reboot from the hard disc everything goes well until the system gets to the loggin screen whereby the screen promptly jumps into convoltions again. Booting with F2 setting the screen dimensions does not help. How can the initial part of the SuSE code get the screen perfectly correct while the latter part stuffs it up? Any ideas on how to interrupt the boot process and set the screen parameters? Any ideas on how to get SuSE to fix this bug? Regards, Colin

Tyan K8S Pro ?

Hi, does someone have experience with SL (Pro or SLES) on the Thunder K8S Pro (S2882G3NR-D) (http://www.tyan.com/products/html/thunderk8spro.html) together with an areca ARC-1160 (Intel IOP331 based) 16-port SATA RAID controller? Most of the components will work just fine, I just wonder about the on-board Sil3114 SATA and Intel IOP based RAID controllers. The manufacturer of the 16-port adapter claims Linux support (RH, SUSE) but which drivers are the correct ones? The Sil3314 should work with the sata_sil driver, right? When I installed my Asus A8V board I had to manually load libata and sata-via before firing up YaST during installation, I assume that's the same here. As for the ARC-1160, I have a certain idea after browsing the kernel source of my SL92 and SL93 machines (and googling all along, for sure). The machine in question will have all 16 disks attached to the 16-port controller, I can only assume that it should boot off this adapter too. The manufacturer seems to have drivers available on ftp://60.248.88.208/RaidCards/AP_Drivers/Linux/DRIVER/Suse-9.0-SLES-x86-64 and ../Suse-9.2-Professional-x86-64_Beta. Hmmm ... as it seems, the driver is _not_ contained in the standard kernel tree (as opposed to what the vendor says on http://www.areca.us/news/html/release_5_6_05.htm - "The Linux and FreeBSD driver have integrated in the kernel tree.") Which means my customer is tied to a specific kernel version, and loses the arcmsr driver on each YOU kernel update :-(( Hence, each kernel update would involve installing the most recent kernel source, integrating the arcmsr source code, modifying some source files, rebuilding and praying. SUSE: no support whatsoever. Andreas (Jaeger), any idea how we could help the customer in this case? Anyway - which distro should I be going for? SLES9 makes no sense IMHO because the machine is not certified hence no support in any case. SL92 is slightly more recent as far as the kernel, the rest is pretty much on the latest identical SUSE9-CORE level. Thanks for any hint! Suse 9.3 + DFI LanParty Ultra-D, and dual core 4200+

greetings, I'm building a new dual-core AMD system with the following spec: AMD dual-core CPU (4200+) with 1GB of RAM, DFI Ultra-D nforce-4 socket-939 MB with the latest BIOS flashed (June 23) Seagate 160GB SATA BenQ DVDRW Chaintech 5200TC video card (PCIx) With the latest BIOS, dual-core CPU is recognized at POST. MEMtest ran without any problem. I tried to perform FTP installation of Suse 9.3 using the boot.iso. The beginning of the installation went without any problems: I was able to select the packages, etc., and it grabbed the files from my NFS sever, etc. all is fine at this point. However, upon the *1st* reboot of the SUSE installation process, the screen just hang (black) after GRUB boot-loader. I had to perform a hard-reboot. So my question is: does the standard kernel on the Suse 9.3 installation CD support dual-core CPU? I suspect it doesn't and what what causes the black screen. any help is very much appreciated,

Running SuSe on MSI RS480 Mother Board

Hi does any one able to run SuSe on MSI RS480 Mother Board. I tried to Install SuSe 9.2 on it but failed. At first my SATA hard disk does not get detected. So I installed a 40 GB PATA hard disk and tried to install SuSe 9.2 64 bit version. SuSe was taking too much time to partition the hard disk and the cpoying of RPM were also slow. Even some pckages were not get copied at all. And in the last whole installation frezzes due to a kernel panic. Also I got lots of APIC error on CPU:40 (40) If any body able to run SuSe 9.2 or more current version on the above mentioned mother board please help me to setup my new machine. Please help with the some NUMA-related questions

I will greatly appreciate any help regarding the following matters: (1) How to know whether my machine is NUMA-aware or not, (2) Difference between memory bank interleaving and node interleaving (3) When the BIOS asks me to set bank interleaving as AUTO, then it says that AUTO allows memory access to spread out over banks on the same node or across nodes decreasing memory access contentions. However, I have no idea when the memory access is spread over banks on the same node or across nodes. I also do not know how to tell the machine to access memory across the nodes or on the same node. I have no idea as to how the AUTO choice affects NUMA-awareness. (4) The BIOS also tells me that I could choose bani interleaving as DISABLED. But I do not know what its implications are for NUMA awareness. Here are other relevant details. I have a dual-Opteron 250 (2.4GHz) set in Tyan Thunder 2885 K8W with AMIBIOS version 2.05. When I bought it last year, the machine was running under SuSE 9.1 Pro and the Linux kernel was 2.6.5-7.108-smp. At that time both the Hardware Info from YAST and /vat/log/messages were explicitly mentioning things : Scanning NUMA topology in Northbridge 24 <6>Number of nodes 2 (10010) <6>Node 0 MemBase 0000000000000000 Limit 000000007fffffff <6>Node 1 MemBase 0000000080000000 Limit 00000000cbff0000 <6>Using node hash shift of 24 These messages indicated that NODE interleaving was off and the machine was NUMA-aware. Then, after a few months, the motherboard failed and the machine was sent to the vendor for repair. It came back with SuSE 9.3 and the Linux kernel version 2.6.11.4-21.7-smp (geeko@buildhost) (gcc version 3.3.5 20050117 (prerelease) (SUSE Linux)) #1 SMP Thu Jun 2 14:23:14 UTC 2005. Now both the Hardware Info from YAST and /vat/log/messages DO NOT mention NUMA anywhere, and I do not have anyway to check whether the NODE-Interleaving is OFF or ON. My difficulties are compounded because I do not know how to interpret the chipset related setting in the BIOS. Currently, in the BIOS setting (Chipset->memory config -> Bank Interleaving), I am asked to choose between AUTO & DISABLED. No choice is offered for Node Interleaving. The only guidance for the choice is that interleaving allows memory access to spread out over banks on the same node or across nodes decreasing memory access contentions. Nothing is mentioned about what happens when Interleaving is disabled. Furthermore, if I choose AUTO, then I do not know when the memory is spread out over banks on the same node or across nodes. I gather that many Linux distributions come with schedutils of which taskset is a subset. This is indeed the case for SuSE 9- Enterprise server and for Fedora-core 3. What is the situation with SuSE 9.3 -Professional Series? As of this time, I am unable to find it in the distribution that I have. Could it be that it is included in the SuSE 9.3-Pro distribution and the vendor of my machine did not install it and that is why I do not not find it? In this case I may have to install them from the SuSE 9.3-Pro DVDs. Alternatively, could it be that schedutils & taskset come with Enterprise server only, and if I want these I will have to download them from their respective Homepages? Testing gcc 4.0.1

Hi all, This is a follow-up to "Configuring gcc 4.0.1". I made sure that I no longer had CXX defined in my .bashrc, and then started from scratch: Created gcc-4.0.1-obj Ran ./configure Ran make bootstrap Ran make -k check The gcc result looks OK. The g++ result does not. === g++ Summary === # of expected passes 9113 # of unexpected failures 2166 # of unexpected successes 16 # of expected failures 54 # of unresolved testcases 61 # of untested testcases 54 # of unsupported tests 90 /usr/bin/g++ version 3.3.4 (pre 3.3.5 20040809) The test is using /usr/bin/g++ instead of the 4.0.1 compiler I just built! Zaurus usb support/Kernel upgrade

Hello, I have a sharp zaurus, the sl-6000, and it appears that after my upgrade to 9.3 the device is no longer seen. Specifically, I cannot connect with usb networking. The kernel notices when i plug it in, but the usb0 ethernet device is not created. I have read that this is a known problem with the 2.6.11 kernel, so I was wondering if there will be an update to a 2.6.12 kernel. or a patch to 2.6.11 that will allow me to continue connecting to my zaurus. If not, is a kotd kernel an option? Or should I go with a vanilla kernel? Thanks, edward

Firefox 1.0.5 for SuSE 9.2 and Evolution

I downloaded the rpm of Firefox 1.0.5 from ftp.suse.com/pub/projects/mozilla for SuSE 9.2. I noticed that from this version the Firefox app is 32 bits - FlashPlayer now works:-) but the problem is that this new rpm has broken Evolution - can't find libplc4.so. After downgraded to 1.0.4 Evolution now works. Alex

Hi all, I'm using SUSE 9.2 AMD64, and have downloaded the latest gcc and am about to bootstrap. Is there anyone who can help me with configuration, bootstrap, test and install? I've run into problems with the testsuite and I don't know whether I have done something wrong or am seeing a bug. I also don't know if what I see is specific to SUSE AMD64, or specific to the current state of my PC. First question: Is there anything wrong with the parameters I am giving to configure? Firefox 1.0.6 Crash

I just installed firefox 1.0.6 from ftp.gwdg.de. Before that i had 1.0.4 which worked fine. Now, firefox crashes after 2-3 minute4s. I am not very sure, but i think that it has something to do with the flash (or at least some sites i visit which have flash). This is the error message The program 'Gecko' received an X Window System error. This probably reflects a bug in the program. The error was 'BadShmSeg (invalid shared segment parameter)'. (Details: serial 90 error_code 169 request_code 147 minor_code 2) (Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously; that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it. To debug your program, run it with the --sync command line option to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.) Oracle 10g - 64bit ?

>From what I have found there isn't a 64-bit Oracle 10gR(x) for AMD Opteron systems? From the info I have found you have to assume the 2.4 kernel and the db server software runs in 32-bit mode. Is this correct?

Dear All I have just completed an ftp installation of SuSE 9.3 x86_64. I have done a YOU update (including the Multimedia Option Packs 1 - 4) and everything seems fine...until i try to install a new package. i am trying to install "abcde". I select the package within YaST and it then comes back with a number of packages the system thinks it needs to install. This includes such things as OpenOffice and other packages which i do not feel are really needed by abcde. When i then click OK/Install YaST fails to find the packages on the media. Can anybody point me towards a solution? TIA Tim

Frank, I did this during the initial install. I had two SATA disks that I wished to stripe, so during the install, when it was talking about partitioning, I selected LINUX RAID for the partition type and then selected what it was being striped with from the 2nd disk. Frank, What driver are you using? The onboard RAID is not real hardware RAID and requires drivers to make it work. Good Afternoon: I am attempting to install SuSE 9.3 on a DFI Motherboard K800M800-MLVF utilizing the onboard VT8237 serial controller in RAID 1. I have updated the mobo bios to the latest available. I have entered the VIA bios and configured it as RAID 1 with the two Seagate 160MB SATA Drives. I then do the install of SuSE 9.3. It gets through the first portion of the install with no problems. On reboot before the second portion, the system hangs with GRUB Loading stage1.5. The motherboard is a DFI K8M800-MLVF with 512MB RAM and an AMD64 3000+. What other information can I provide so that I can get the thing up? Just booting from the CD seems fine. I can even boot into rescue mode. DVD - no boot

Hello everyone: I'm running SuSE 9.3 / 64-bit mode and I tried to make a back-up copy of the dual-layer DVD. According the K3D, I did just that as the file sizes were identical. However, the copies I made will not boot. If the machine is up and running and I want to install software through YAST, then the copy DVD works OK. But, if I try to boot from the copy DVD, nothing happens. What have I done/not done and, more importantly, is there a way to correct this. Any help greatly appreciated. Cheers, Mike

Howto build 32bit apps on amd64 suse 9.3?

Hi all, I am trying to compile syncekonnector-0.2.1 on a suse 9.3 amd64 platform. It depends on synce and synce-devel packages with are both (to my knowledge 32bit packages. configure complains about de synce libraries not being compatible in config.log. So, I instructed configure to use 32bit compile (-m32). Now, it complains it can't find libXext, but I know it's there (devel packages are both in 64bit and 32bit present). I'm not a devel guy, who to get out of this mess?

I just noticed that superkaramba 0.37rc1 is out and that Liquid Weather++ already requires it. For a while there was a discussion here about building a x86_64 rpm for SUSE 9.3... Was this successful? Any chance that there will be a superkaramba 0.37 SUSE 9.3 x86_64 RPM soon? Cu, Jörg.

hda dma_intr error messages

I "moved" IDE HDD to other computer, and now I found under SuSE boot (in dmesg output) following messages: hda: dma_intr status=0x5 {DriveReady SeekCompleteError} hda: dma_intr error=0x84 {Drive Status Error BadCRC} This pair of messages repeate 4 times at the boot, and then there is ide0: reset: success hda (/dev/hda) is my SuSE HDD drive. Does this messages means some hardware problem w/my HDD and how serious (i.e. should I awaiting HDD replacement in the nearly future?) ? I checked (using badblocks read-only) all Linux (ext3fs and xfs) partitions on this HDD. There was no failure messages. Only dos and swap partitions are currently not checked (I don't know how to check swap partition else then dd /dev/hdx to /dev/null ?)

SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 9, TYAN K8WE S2895, BIOS v.1.01 2 x Opteron 252 Troy. 4 x OCZ 1024MB DDR ECC PC3200 (Server Series) of memory. BIOS tests are Ok. However, SLES 9 finds only 3 Gb instead of 4 Gb. All BIOS settings are default; installation is default. Thanks!

Thanks Dima for the tip. BTW, now I see both CPUs. However, now I seem to have another problem. While it would seem that I don't need to upgrade the BIOS on this particular machine, I do have another 2895 that has dual-cores, so I would definitely need to upgrade the BIOS. This other machine, though, will use both SATA, IDE and SCSI drives. The SATA are on a RAID card. It seems I will have the same problems as you do? SuSE 9.3 and Tyan S2895

Hello, I just finished building a machine with this motherboard, and need to install SuSE 9.3 Pro on it. It has 2 Opterons 252. Since this is the very first time I install the 64 bit version of SuSE on a 2 CPU Opteron machine, I have several questions in my mind, that somebody might be kind enough to answer: 1. How van I tell whether the motherboard recognizes both CPUs? 2. When I boot from the DVD, I go into rescue system option. I can then tell that it has loaded the 64 bit version of the kernel. However, when I cat /proc/cpuinfo, apparently I can only see 1 CPU. Also, when doing a zcat of /proc/config.gz, I see SMP is off. Now, this is the rescue system option, I haven't performed an install yet. However, does this mean that Linux i seeing only one CPU? Or once I do the insyall, it will normally see both? Any experiences with "Tyan Thunder K8SE" or NVIDIA "nForce Professional 2200"?

Hi all, I am currently planning to set up a dual Opteron based machine as a server machine (for quite different services) for a school's network. Tyan's NVIDIA "nForce Professional 2200" based main board "Thunder K8SE 2892G3NR" [1] has come into closer consideration, yet. My questions regarding this main board or chipset would be: - Is there anyone on this list who uses this main board (or another board that is based on the same chipset) running Linux (or even especially SuSE-Linux-9.3_x86-64)? - If so, can you please tell me about your experience? Are there any pitfalls (e.g. components that tend to make problems when running Linux)? - Especially: How well does the builtin S-ATA-II controller run? Is SuSE-9.3_x86-64 installable on pure S-ATA disks connected to this controller? - Is my assumption right, that the RAID the builtin S-ATA-II controller is capable of, is no real hardware RAID but a driver emulated RAID? So my solution would be to use real software RAID (level 0+1) instead which shouldn't impact performance much as I don't run the computing intensive RAID 5. I would be very glad if anyone can give me some information about this board or chipset - especially about the S-ATA-II controller. Many thanks in advance! tg3 driver can fail with memory remapping

Hi, since I didn't find this browsing manually through the archives (will there ever be a search function for SuSE mailing lists??? :-)) I send this for information for other users that might step on it: The tg3 network driver can fail on 64bit systems when the memory remapping around the memory hole at 3.5GB (look here for an explanation: http://lists.suse.com/archive/suse-amd64/2005-Jul/0071.html) is activated. On my Asus A8V board with AMD64 4000+ CPU and a 3com 3C996B-T network card, the tg3 driver fails with tg3.c: v3.31 (June 8, 2005) tg3_test_dma() Write the buffer failed -19 tg3: DMA engine test failed, aborting. when I've either Software- or Hardware-base memory remapping activated in the bios. As soon as I deactivate both of these options, the card and the driver work fine. Of course, Linux doesn't see all of the 4GB then (only 3.7GB), but that's better than having no network :-) And I need to deactivate the remapping anyway to get 3D acceleration for the fglrx driver running... Memory test option does nothing

I have a Dual Opteron with both SuSE9.3 & Fedora 3, SuSE being the default . Both are x86_64 versions. In splash screen, where we are asked to make choices for either the SuSE or Fedora, we have an additional option to make a choice for memory test. nasty A8N8x bug

Hi, Anyone out there with Asus A8N8x x86-64 motherboard and SUSE 9.3? I haven't had any success with SUSE kernels for a long time with SUSE 9.3. Mainline kernels work fine, as do SUSE 9.1 and 9.2 kernels, but none of the 9.3 kernels make it through kernel initialization phase. They hang on 'probing PCI hardware (00)'. Tried different BIOS versions and PCI/APIC related BIOS settings and kernel parameters, but no luck there. When 9.3 came out i had to rip out SUSE kernel during installation and revert it to the one used in 9.2. I was quietly wishing this was a temporary 9.3 bug and would be resolved soon, but no. Still blank. Any ideas? I'd be willing to help in any way i can to resolve this. Has to be some nasty PCI related patch applied to 9.3 that my box just doesn't handle properly. -- // Janne

Hi, We have two of the same workstations (W1100z) and we are seeing exactly the same problem as described in Mark's e-mail under Suse 9.3. The problem also occurs under Novell Linux Desktop. I can also add Fedora Core 4 and Ubuntu 5.04 to the list of distros that work properly. This is definitely a compatibility issue with Suse only. Suse is the distribution of choice at our institution and this problem is proving to be very frustrating. I would welcome any suggestions as to how we might work around it. Hello Hereafter my small contrib on an AMD64 laptop and SuSE AMD64. Mine is an Asus L5D, no more available. I bought it on last year, on July exactly. So one year with this laptop .... and SuSE 9.0 + SuSE 9.1 (the two ones are installed with WinXP). What does not work with SuSE AMD64 : - internal modem : this is a Conexant one, a Linuxant driver 64 bits is available now; I prefer to buy a PCMCIA modem card (Com One) - wifi device : this is a Broadcom one. I am going to have a look on Linuxant site ... - card reader (3in1) : this is a Ricoh one About PCMCIA : with the help of Matt, my Com One modem works fine with SuSE 9.1 (updated with kernel and PCMCIA package of SuSE 9.2); with SuSE 9.0, sometimes it works .... in one location, not everywhere (That's curious). About ACPI : suspend to RAM and suspend to disk are not activated (just for info : I bought last week a HP laptop nx6110 without OS, I installed SuSE 9.3 32 bits and I could test the suspend to disk : it works fine !!, so with SuSE 9.3 AMD64 on a 64 bits laptop, it should work too). Just a small problem with SuSE 9.0 : if I halt the laptop plugged on AC power (with or without battery) and try to start again with ON/OFF button, it freezes on Asus logo. Not the case with SuSE 9.1 or WinXP. About video card (FX 5650) : I use the Nvidia drivers downloaded from Nvidia website. What a beautifull screen (1400x1050) ! This is with the last XFree package supplied by SuSE. About web navigator : I use Opera with 32 bits plugins ... and sometimes FireFox ou Mozilla when no flashplayer website. Take care : on SuSE 9.0 or SuSE 9.1 the plugin Java was not 64 bits. I had to download and install the Blackdown Java one. To my mind, the best choice : a 64 bits laptop with Nvidia graphic card and chipset + SuSE AMD64. I suppose that SuSE 9.3 AMD64 is like the previous ones : very good. I never try Mandrake 64 bits or Fedora Core 64 bits but it seems that SuSe makes the best distrib for AMD64 allowing to run 32 bits softwares. Regards Pascal

Hallo, nach einem Hinweis aus der SuSE-Oracle-Liste wende ich mich an Euch, in der Hoffnung auf einen Rat... Ich habe das Problem, dass ich auf einem Dual-Xeon mit Suse x86_64 9.3 ein aktuelles PHP5 mit u.a. Unterstützung für den Oracle Instant Client kompilieren muss. Letzterer ist nicht in 64 bit erhältlich, weshalb der Compilervorgang logischwerweise immer mit einem Hinweis auf eine inkomaptible Bibilothek abbricht... Bevor ich das Xeon-System mit SuSE 9.3 x86_32 neu aufsetzen muss (denn bei meinen Tests in der x86_32 Version lief das völlig reibungslos) meine Frage, ob ich evtl. auf dem 64bit System ein 32bittiges PHP executable kompilerien kann... Folgende Versuche habe ich unternommen jedoch ohne Erfolg: --target=i386-pc-linux-gnu und auch export CC='gcc -m32' Ich wäre Euch wirklich dankbar, wenn Ihr mir weiterhelfen könntet. Die Supportdatenbank von Oracle weiß auch keine Lösung und die Installation des kompletten "alten" Oracle Clients soll ich auf jeden Fall vermeiden (zumal der auch Probleme macht -- wenn auch andere --, wie ich feststellen durfte...). Welche Bedingungen müssen den erfüllt sein, dass ich bei diesem BiArch-System ein 32bittiges PHP-Executable erzeugen kann? Wie gesagt, als Trost bliebe mir das System erneut mit 32bit aufzusetzenm, aber das wäre für mich nur die Notlösung... Danke im Vorab Reto

/proc/mtrr & BIOS-provided RAM map

I am having a horrible problem of wild and random variation in execution time of of a benchmark test program from one fresh reboot to another fresh reboot (and also from one try to another in any one reboot). At the advice of a few colleagues at linux-kernel(a)vger.kernel.org and at use-amd64(a)suse.com (who very kindly spared their valuable time to give me some advice), I tried booting with mem=4000M, mem= 3264, mem=3000M and mem=2000M (i.e, a value that is less than the actual RAM (4096M PC3200 in 4 dimms with 2 dimms on each CPU that is an Opteron 250 at 2.4 GHz) that are under the control of SuSE 9.3 operating system. None of the setting has helped. I continue to get the same wild and random variation in the execution of the test program under identical conditions (test program is the only program running, no Internet etc.). Also, no matter what is set for xxxx in mem=xxxxM , the contents of the /proc/mtrr & and the BIOS provide RAM map remain exactly the same (although the dmesg shows the amount of memory change with the value of xxxx in mem=xxxxM). Is this normal? Does this show any BIOS problem? What these are telling me. I will greatly appreciate any advice that any one may have for me on the above questions. thttpd and time zones?

Is anyone else running thttpd on SuSE Linux and experiencing wierd time zone behaviour? I have thttpd running as a light-weight Web server on our Web proxies in order to provide access to the autoproxy "proxy.pac" file (leaving this duty up to the corporate Web "experts" has proven to be too great a risk): hostname:~ # cat /etc/SuSE-release ; uname -srm ; rpm -q thttpd SuSE Linux 9.2 (x86-64) VERSION = 9.2 Linux 2.6.8-24.16-smp x86_64 thttpd-2.25b-27 Using the default SuSE configuration, thttpd writes primarily to the log "/var/log/thttpd.log", though periodically it likes to dump status info to the system log (/var/log/messages). In both cases, thttpd seems to prefer UTC/GMT rather than the local time zone - for example, the request log (/var/log/thttpd.log) contains time stamps like this: 09/Jul/2005:07:17:39 +0000 instead of this: 09/Jul/2005:17:17:39 +1000 Okay, that's fine and restricted to the access log - I can adjust for that and am not too worried; however, entries written to the system log are _also_ in the wrong time zone, so /var/log/messages ends up containing time stamps like this: Jul 9 16:28:45 hostname -- MARK -- Jul 9 06:29:15 hostname thttpd... Sun W1100z - problem with keyboard and mouse

Hardware: 4 different Sun Java Workstation W1100z (Opteron 150, 1GB RAM) 4 x Sun USB keyboard 4 x Sun USB mouse Problem occurs with: SuSE Professional 9.1 64bit SuSE Professional 9.3 32bit SuSE Professional 9.3 64bit Problem does not occur with: Sun Java Desktop Gentoo OpenBSD Problem Description: Keyboard - While holding down any key, that character will repeat on the screen about 30-160 times until it pauses for a second before displaying several of the same character at once, and will then continue to repeat until the next pause. This occurs on the console, in xterms, remotely, in different shells, and in different editors. It also occurs while typing normally. Mouse - While in X, moving the mouse in circles for about 10s-60s, the mouse will pause for a second and then jump to where it thinks it should be. If I continously move the mouse in circles it will pause just about every minute. I've only had the problem occur in SuSE Professional, 9.1 64bit, 9.3 32bit, 9.3 64bit. I didn't encounter the problem in the Sun Java Desktop, gentoo or in OpenBSD. The problem occurs using the latest SuSE kernel, as well as with kernel 2.6.13-rc1. We currently have 4 W1100z's that have SuSE 9.3 Pro 64bit on them, and all 4 exhibit the same problem. Thanks in advance for any help. I've performed the upgrade on a single CPU machine. My only "failure?" if you will is the image for the grub screen is gone so the grub boot loader is in text mode. Other than that everything that I use it for functions normally. There is a section in the release notes (manuals) about what will not be updated doing an upgrade vs fresh install, but none of it was applicable to my system. -Alain. -----Original Message----- From: James D. Have you looked into HUGEPAGES? These are allocated as 2 MEG pages instead of 4 K pages. You can set aside part of memory for HUGE pages at Boot time. Maybe SUSE doesn't recommend using HUGEPAGES I don't know. /boot/grub/menu.lst and add the following string to the kernel line: hugepages=xx where xx is the number of HUGE pages you want allocated. You can also put a value in /etc/sysctl.conf file: vm/nr_hugepages = xx then on the SHMGET adds the parameter SHM_HUGETLB And the pages will come out of these HUGE pages. Now I have never quite figure out how to calculate a good value for 'xx'. Also I can't find any documentation that states if you can give pages back if you over allocate HUGE pages. or what happens if 'xx' is too small for your requested allocation. If I mmap say a 1GB file, then I mmap another 1GB file. It will then have both files in memory correct? And how long will it keep them in memory? Also I noticed it uses PAGE_SIZE as the block size to grab the files in. Is there a way to increase this just for mmap or is the default of 4096kB a good size to use. We mainly deal with 100MB to 5GB file sizes. Nothing really small. And usually everything sequential. Any further answer's appreciated. mmap & /dev/shm

We have a in-house application that uses mmap to pull a file into memory. I can't seem to find any info on where this file is stored in memory. I know that it is shared memory. But does the /dev/shm have anything to do with it. Isn't shm just a tmpfs? Also can shm be disabled? I have a machine with 16GB and 8GB then goes to the shm. Does this only allow mmap to use the other 8GB or is all 16GB accessible to it? These are the questions I have been trying to figure out for over a week now. Not many answers on google and no one has seemed to ask this before. Also is mmap the fastest way to get a file from disk to memory? Any help appreciated. compiling gimp plugin for amd64

Hello, I'm trying to use a gimp plugin called wideangle, but it's crashing with a segfault. I've talked to the developer, who doesn't have an amd64. It seems possible that the problem is some amd64 'gotcha' like a compiler flag or something (I was once a C programmer but am no longer current). I haven't found anything in the FAQ or by searching the archives. So I'm wondering if there's anywhere specific I should be looking or if the following details suggest any solution. I'm running Suse 9.3 on an athlon64 box. Matlab 7.0 SP2 process

When i start matlab (64 bit version) on my suse 9.3 x86_64 it appears on the process table about 10 times consuming each process some memory (10 times more memory). This behavior doesn't appear on my other pc (running debian 3.1 , kernel 2.6.8 i386, same version of matlab but 32 bit). I have a Shuttle XPC SN95G5 (v1) with motherboard FN95 that includes a Marvell Yukon 8001 GB network device and have similar problems as with the two A makers. That is I get VPD keys software errors from kernel, it allways reports zero bytes send/recive and small temporar lockups (~0.1s) when monitoring the device. The ethernet device works though, so it's not a that big problem, just wanted to report the problem. Puzzling wild variation of execution time

I will greatly appreciate help in understanding the puzzling wild variation in the execution time of small test/benchmark program, as explained below. (1) The nature of the benchmark/test program: A floating point arithmetic intensive atmospheric chemistry modeling task. It used to take, in a consistent manner, around 2m 37s on my machine when it was running under SuSe 9.1 Pro. When I run the benchmark program, I shut-off all other programs. Thus, during its run, it is the only active program. THe rest are belonging to root are sleeping. There is no other user. (2) The machine: Dual Opteron 250 with 4 GB of PC3200 (DDR) memory in 4 dimms that fill two dimms on cpu0 and two dimms on cpu1 installed in Tyan Thunder K8 system board that has American MegaTrend AMIBIOS V2-04. It now runs under SuSE 9.3 Pro and the Linux version 2.6.11.4-21.7-smp (geeko@buildhost) (gcc version 3.3.5 20050117 (prerelease) (SUSE Linux)) #1 SMP Thu Jun 2 14:23:14 UTC 2005 (3) Background of the problem: After only 4 months of the delivery of the machine by the vendor, the mother board failed. The machine was sent to the vendor. He then replaced the mother board with a new one and installed SuSE 9.3 Pro to bring the machine up-to-date with the Linux version 2.6.11.4-21.7-smp (geeko@buildhost) (gcc version 3.3.5 20050117 (prerelease) (SUSE Linux)) #1 SMP Thu Jun 2 14:23:14 UTC 2005 (4) The problem: After the repair and upgrade to 9.3 Pro, the execution times of the same test/benchmark program varies widely between run to run. It is never consistent. It varies from 2m 37s to more than 6m. A pattern is seen in the variation. Usually, the longest execution time is when the machine is started after remaining shut-off for a few hours. The shortest execution time is obtained after the machine has been constantly on for abot 7 to 10 hours. (5) My puzzle: While a computer is well known to be reproducible, the wild variation by a factor of almost 3 in the execution is very disturbing. What could be the cause? Does it mean that some vital component involved in execution of the numerical modeling (RAM memory or the memory on the CPUs) are loose or erratic and may be about to go bad? I am just puzzled. screen blocks installation of 9.1

Hi folks, After more than six months of messing around I finally got SuSE 9.1 running. Then, silly me, I went out a bought a laptop: It is an AMD 64 bit processor supplied by a company called TPG, but I believe that it is actually an Arima W70-K8M in disguise. I tried to install SuSE 9.1 for 64 bit machines but ran into the following problem. SuSE appears to install with no problems, but when it goes to re-start it hangs thus: First start: I press F2 to see details: hangs after saying it is going to start something (which I have forgotten). Second start attempt: Gets past the above point, but hangs after announcing that it is starting CUPS. Third start attempt: Gets to the login screen and announces that it cannot read the monitor type and would I like to configure it manually. After configuring SuSE hangs the machine. Must power off. The above is exactly repeatable every time, several times. The screen is a WXGA LCD with LVDS interface. The native resolution is 1280 x 800 "wide" screen. The card is a SiS 651_66FX_ _741_760_760GX_M661FX_M661MX Works with zero problems under 'that' XP at 60 Hz, 32 bit color. I have tried: (a) installation without up-dates, (b) installation with up-dates (about three hours with ADSL), (c) setting the screen as LCD with under-sized pixel dimensions, (d) setting VGA (screen drops into violent color flashes), etc I have spent over twenty hours surfing the web for a solution. TPG do not provide technical support except to say that there is a discussion on the Whirlpool forum (but I read the whole lot, about 90 large pages, and found NULL). Samba Network install fails

Hi , I 'm trying to setup Network install using CIFS for 9.3 and 9.2 and they both fail for my cluster setup . Though I have got the network install to work using NFS, But same install FAILS while using samba. The server hosting the repository is an Netapp FAS 980 . While using Suse 9.3 the system boots up fine and I can see my repository too . but it fails with an message cant find sources. While using Suse 9.2 I get a very different message . I get a message cant find images and the installation aborts. Any help to solve the problem Cheers yogesh
