Today 12:21:38 Hi, After updating kde to 3.4 (suse 9.2) i noticed that in contror center-->sound & multimedia --> Audio cds there is no more the mp3 tab, but only the ogg vorbis. Is the strange mp3 policy in suse 9.3 effected and suse 9.2? Which packeges must i intall to resolve this? I should notice than i can hear mp3.... Anyone able to get this to work properly? It keeps hanging on me when it tries to grasp an image. I was using dvdrip and just couldn't get it to work.

qlogic fc switch - can't see storage

I have tried this with 2 machines, 1 SLES9 and the other 9.2 Pro. I have a FC raid and one of the aforementioned computers hooked to a Qlogic SanBox 5200 FC switch. The switch sees both the host and the raids as online 2 Gbit, fabric. When the computer boots - when the qlogic driver loads it will see the Nexsan Ataboy raid. However I cannot see it using the Yast partitioner. Indeed, it sometimes won't even run and I have to kill the processes. Sometimes I can see the raid under the hardare info - but there is only 1 entry with a device name of /dev/sg0. There should be 2, since the raid is 3TB total it has to be partitioned into 2 luns. If I plug the raid directly into the Qlogic 2342 hba on the computer, everything works. The raid is detected as two devices and shows up as /dev/sdb and /dev/sdc. I also tried downloading the latest hba drivers from Qlogic and compiling them to no avail. I have contacted Qlogic tech support but pretty much all they had me do was run a script that collected lots of system info. I sent that to them yesterday and haven't heard back yet. Any thoughts? I don't think about an update either, because there is nothing I could update :-) Let's say it this way: In the Moment it's more or less fun to try different things with this machines :-) The 3ware is the only PCI-Hardware plugged in. iommu=noforce is IIRC one of the 'Save-Settings" boot option. But I tried more then this one. acpi=off nosmp maxcpus=1 pci=nobios pci=bios ... And as I said before FC3 is running without any problems. kernel 2.6.11-1.14_FC3. So, I think my Hardware isn't to exotic to boot linux :-) Will give SUSE 9.3 another chance tomorrow on another machine of the same type. Bis denne, Michael

Remote usage

I am still trying to find the best secure way to get into my home network from the road. In my home I have a wondows box that has a really large hard drive. I use this hme computer as storage for all kinds of files. There are times when I am on the road and I need to retrieve these files. I am using a HP AMD 64 laptop and would be using this computer to attach to the windows box for file retriveal. I need a program that will install on the windows box that will allow the laptop with a linux program installed talk to each other. I need these to be as secure as possible. I have fooled around with tightVNC but am wondering if there is something better. Thank's in advance for any input. David

Hmmmm. Not sure about the udev. I'll check. The kernel and whatever else were downloaded through the apt repositories. Those repositories clearly separate the different versions of SuSE. As for the modules compiled into the kernel, if the right modules are compiled into the kernel, than I may not need mkinitrd at all, or am I wrong? Strange errors relating to tcl and tk libraries

Hi all. I am trying to compile the latest version of scilab, Scilab-3.1-rc1 from source. The configurator seems to have trouble locating the tcl and tk libraries, which I know exist as '/usr/lib64/tcl8.4' and '/usr/lib/tk8.4' (I am running SuSE 9.2 for AMD64 and I updated them via apt for SuSE). My kernel is 2.6.11-4. As I have learned from the list, the first people have received their SuSE 9.3 boxes. So finally I can ask the questions: Is there a 64 bit version of mono and which version is it? If there is one, does it include monodoc and monodevelop and are they working? Is there a 64 bit version of Java and which version is it? Detlef

Visioneer One Touch 7300 USB Scanner

Has anyone got this scanner working on SuSE 9.2 64bit? I tried to use YaST but it is not recognized and I am too new at this, to mess around with settings confortably. Besides YaST said something to the affect that I could damage the scanner if I didn't get it right. Thanks to anyone who can help and a play by play install would be very helpful. This is the last item I need to get working on my system... Please someone help! Oh yea, I have 50 gmail invites to give away if anyone wants an account... 2 gigs storage now and it's still free. After disabling ACPI in the BIOS and re-installing without ACPI support in the kernel, the install still failed to load the module for the megaraid card. During the 9.2 install it did ask for the module disk 2 (IDE, SCSI, etc, modules) which I created earlier, to load a module into the kernel, but it did specify which module it was loading. Interestingly, I loaded Mandrake 10 to see if it loaded the megaraid module, which it did. Personally, although I have nothing against Mandrake (it is an excellent distro perfect for new Linux users) I would prefer using Suse. Anyone have any ideas as to why Mandrake can detect and load the correct module for a megaraid card while Suse 9.2 cannot? If anybody has any ideas on how to fix this under Suse 9.2, I would be most grateful. Thank you for the answers. I do remember of a problem with hotplug under SuSE 9.1 on 32 bit. I run 2 SuSE 9.1 machines at work, both 32 bits, and i read everyday (not exactly, in fact !!) the suse-e-linux mailing list. I think the broken hotplug package has been fixed months ago. Anyway, on both 32 bits machines, it works like a charm. Do you think that SuSE did not patch the hotplug package for x86-64 by now ? I do not think that there ever was a solution for this in 9.1 apart from switching off the subfs http://portal.suse.com/sdb/en/2004/05/hmeyer_91_revert_from_subfs.html Upgrading to 9.2 where it works in both 32 & 64 bit version may be your only solution. 9.3 without MP3 support??

Hi: I recently read one review at http://madpenguin.org/cms/?m=show&id=3851&page=2 abut the upcoming SUSE 9.3 One thing that brings my attention its the "removed MP3 support"?? Is that really true? GStreamer, Arts, and aKode COMPILED without Mp3 support? I know some folks at SUSE are reading this maillist..can somebody confirm it? If this is true,Its time to move to another distro.the lack of multimedia codecs was easy to solve, but this news are really annoying. bye

No go, it complains that /proc/sys/dev/sensors doesn't exist. Some googling reveals that means that sensor support isn't compiled into the kernel. That doesn't make sense to me, if sensor support isn't compiled in, then why does lm_sensors seem to work fine? If it is compiled in, then why do I not have a /proc/sys/dev/sensors ? hi all, I am using Suse Enterprise 9.0 amd64; I am trying to use freeradius as radius daemon. I can install it from the CDs but it doesnt work. at start, it says Failed to link to module 'rlm_exec': rlm_exec.a: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory I discovered that rlm_exec.la looks for rlm_exec.a and it DOES EXIST and it is in the right place: /usr/lib/freeradius mhh... the radiusd is ELF64 but the lib is 32... may be this the issue? I dont know, ... Is there here someone that has freeradius up and running?? thanks, Ric

Hello, I got the following stack trace in the log on an AMD64-File-Server running SAMBA shares on (LVM2-Volumegroup with ReiserFS v3.6 partitions) with quotas turned on. The dump occured during a the copying of files from a SuSE Linux 9.1 Prof. client (smbclient) to a SAMBA share. As an workaround quota support has been disabled and all is running quite well again. There was an kernel update made (with YOU) on March, 18th 2005, but he problem occured just today. on a amd-64 an odd error. I keep getting the following message sound server fatal error cpu overload whilst the performance ceases and the system locks up. any others having this problem? After a few minutes the system is again usable. using an asus k8v motherboard with the onboard sound. Roy Cabaniss

9.2 64Bit + 3w SATA-RAID = very slow with high load??

Hi! Problem: very slow disk access + very high load during disk access. System: Dual Opteron, SuSE professional 9.2 64-bit, default SMP-kernel 2.6.8-24.11, SATA-RAID from 3ware with 3w-9xxx driver version v2.26.02.001 (From SuSE 9.2), RAID is the only "disk" in system and we have LVM on top of it (so we can change the sizes of the partitions later on.) Example1: currently one java process reading data from file. Java get's 85-100% CPU time and load is at 6-7.5. Nothing else. Example2: yesterday, I copied data from another server (Dual Opteron SuSE 9.0) over NFS mount with cp -command. Load was at 2.5-3 and at the top of top listing I had nfsd processes with 1-2% CPU load each. Data transfer rate was only 2.2Mb/s and the servers were connected with Gigabit lan! Example3: From old RH server the file transfers resulted in high loads (4-7) during rsync copying - so it's not the "other" servers fault. What's wrong? And what can I do about it? -- Hugo.

How to tell if the list is dead

Like others, I posted to the list asking if it was me or the list. No response (of course, because the list was dead), so I thought about it for a little. If instead of posting to the list to test it. I figured out that all you have to do is go to the archives at lists.suse.com and check to see what the latest non-spam email is for the list in question, and if you don't see anything newer (lots newer, like days, because of slight lag) aside from spam, I'd think it pretty safe to assume it is the list itself. If suse can't post to its own archive.... heheheh thought I'd put this out here as I'm now seeing so many messages like mine asking if the list is down. B-)
