I want to add to my repositories also supplementary support for kde 3.4.3, but i saw that packman only have support for kde 3.4.2? SuSE 10 x86_64 and Modem US Robotics

Hello, I'm brazilian and trying to leave Windows and to use Linux. I'm install SuSE 10 x86_64 on my Athlon 64 3000+. The only one problem that I have was the Modem Device. My modem is a US Robotics USR-263095-OEM and I know the Linuxant drivers support it. But in SuSE 10, I don't can do it work. The Linuxant offers installation for this modem and have a precompile version for SuSE 10. But it's for SuSE 10 i386... but my system is SuSE 10 x86_64. I get the generic package for 64 and try to install on my system, but it not work. CPU 1: synchronized TSC with CPU 0 (last diff 0 cycles, maxerr 539 cycles) Brought up 2 CPUs Disabling vsyscall due to use of PM timer time.c: Using PM based timekeeping. The powernow-k8 driver in SL9.3 caused clock instability on SMP machines that did not support HPET timers; SL10.0 and the mainstream kernel support PMTimer for those machines. That's most likely what you were seeing. The single processor, dual-core problem is believed to be something different and is under investigation at AMD. Can't load SuSE 9.3 on new motherboard

Greetings I obtained a newly released Opteron/Athlon64 socket 939 motherboard from SuperMicro. I built the box and put the DVD in and booted. After I get through the installation choices, the installer stops and says it can no longer "see" the DVD/CD reader (panel becomes painted in red). This I tried with every installation choice (acpi on/off, safe mode etc.). I tried loading SLE9 and I got a different problem -- it could not see the SATA hard disk. I suspect that the loaded 9.3 kernel module has trouble talking to the DVD drive because of some chipset issue. I'm surprised that the initial whatchamacallit that boots and starts the installation process has no trouble with the DVD drive. Has anybody conquered this demon? TIA & Cheers

When I had this problem, it turned out to be the firmware of the DVD drive that was causing the problem. I swapped it out for another drive, and the install went smoothly from there. Hi, I have an AMD Athlon64 X2 machine running SuSE 10 (x86_64) on an Nvidia Nforce4 Ultra motherboard, and have noticed that the system clock has become unstable (it runs too fast). Not sure when it occurred, but I have been getting a lot of error messages like this in dmesg: warning: many lost ticks. Your time source seems to be instable or some driver is hogging interupts rip acpi_processor_idle+0x12f/0x37f [processor] Is there some parameter I should be passing to the kernel to stop it correcting for lost ticks? iptables probably broken

Hi, all. In my recent postings to this board I mentioned that 'iptables' gave me errors like iptables v1.3.3: can't initialize iptables table `nat': Bad file descriptor Perhaps iptables or your kernel needs to be upgraded. iptables v1.3.3: can't initialize iptables table `filter': Bad file descriptor Perhaps iptables or your kernel needs to be upgraded. iptables v1.3.3: can't initialize iptables table `mangle': Bad file descriptor Perhaps iptables or your kernel needs to be upgraded. ...[Repeated many times, probalby depending on how many times a script invokes 'iptables -t ...'.] I was got these errors regardless of whether I used my own firewall/NAT script or SuSE's firewall. Just to be sure, I compiled the SuSE stock kernel myself (I also wanted to "lighten it up" since it comes configured for all kinds of hardware I don't have); I still got the same errors. Then, I downgraded to the version and dependencies on the SuSE 9.3 DVD. After that, 'iptables' worked flawlessly on my SuSE 10.0. Therefore, I must conclude that the newer versions of 'iptables' are broken. It makes no difference if I install the one on the SuSE 10.0 DVD or the repositories. I suspect this problem is NOT particular to SuSE 10; therefore earlier versions of SuSE may also be affected by the "upgraded" versions of 'iptables' in the apt-get repositories. CF

A8V, Suse 9.3 and BIOS memory remapping

Hi, I just upgraded the BIOS of my A8V deluxe to the newest version (1014) und tried to boot with the Suse 9.3 Live-CD, distributed by the German magazine c't. The Gigabyte GA-K8NF-9 was mentioned on this list before, having few problems. However, people tend to report "works", which isn't terribly useful. Specifically: Does it work with the SUSE 10.0 kernel out of the box (basic functionality)? Does the IEEE1394 interface work with SUSE 10.0? (There is no specific chip specified, and linux1394.org is dead.) Are SATA disks recognised during installation and give no trouble for booting and otherwise? Does the gigabit LAN work reliably/at all at 100M and at 1G? MANY-MANY PROBLEMS AFTER UPGRADING TO 10.0

Hello everybody. Today (errrrrr, yesterday, since it is now well past midnight and I am still pulling my hair off!), UPS brought me 10.0. With eager anticipation I started upgrading 9.3 to 10.0 on my Presario 3240 laptop (2.2 GHz AMD64 based, nVidia chipset, nVidia GeForce4 440, Go with 64MB dedicated video memory). Now I regret it ever doing this upgrade. Below I describe some of the many problems I am facing after the upgrade and then provide what I think are pertinent syslogs. --What happened to alsaplayer? It seems it has disappeared, even from the repositories! --Often the cursor does not "grab" when it is supposed to (left-clicking on sliders or window frames for resizing or when attempting to "block" text to be pasted by left-clicking and dragging --I use KDE). --The internet connection unexpectedly freezes after about 10 minutes of uptime (it did not do it just before the upgrade and after the upgrade I tested it with a 32-bit system; the ethernet cable and the cable modem seem to work fine with the 32-bit system --running 32-bit SuSE 9.3). This happens even if there is virtually no internet activity. See the pertinent syslogs below. Could this be a kernel problem? 'uname -r' responds '2.6.13-15-default', the stock SuSE kernel. --Shutdown takes forever (maybe over a minute) to commence. --Lost ticks are reported in the syslogs, even booting with the 'no_timer_check' kernel directive. (And no, I need ACPI because this is a laptop!) See the pertinent syslogs below. --DMA and IRQ errors also get registered in the syslogs, as you can see below. --The upgrade trashed all my "politically incorrect" media players! (I remember that before SuSE was aquired by Novel, it offered, on the installation CD/DVD, rpms for hard-to-install media players. Those were the days!) with some effort, I can tolerate "politically correct" libraries, such as 'xine-lib', if I know what I have to delete and install from other sources. But in my case it insisted on replacing perfectly good libraries, claiming inconsistencies. When the upgrade was done, kaffeine, xine, and MPlayer, which worked reasonably well under 9.3 (with the exception of some --not all-- .wmv files) had been virtually eviscerated. None could play DVDs, or mpegs, or whatever else! None! I uninstalled 'xine-lib', reinstalled 'libxine1', uninstalled and then re-installed kaffeine, and made sure that 'w32codec' was installed, but the end result was the same. (It could be that some packages are 32-bit and some others 64.) At least, if the user has "politically incorrect" libraries and executables installed, the upgrade procedure should make an attempt to leave them alone!!!! Some libraries, such as 'libdvdcss' are not even available in the apt-get repositories and one has to go on a treasure hunt to find them --if he is able to at all. Hear me out, SuSE/Novell! I cannot spend all my waking hours and cut into my sleep hunting for dependencies to get my computer to do the things I want. I am seriously thinking about switching to Mandriva or some other distribution which has all the software I want ready to go. If this had been a friend's computer, most probably I WOULD have gone with Mandriva. (Where is the ease of use, advertised on the box my10.0 came in? Novell has been quoted in the newsmedia about its desire to pernetrate the desktop. How are they going to attract people away from Windows with problems like these? Sure, I am no guru, but I am no novice either.) --Why does 'lspci' report my video card as '01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation NV17 [GeForce4 420 Go 32M] (rev a3)', while I know it is a *64MB* GeForce *440* Go? Now some snippets of the syslogs (obtained via 'tail -n 100 -f /var/sys/log/messages'): Internet connection hangs: Oct 25 00:04:53 presario gconfd (nonsense-7105): GConf server is not in use, shutting down. Eclipse problems under x86_64 / 10.0

Hi. I just updated to 10.0, and everything seems to work except Eclipse. I get an unsatisfied link error. The error message doesn't make much sense since the file it is complaining is present. Anyone know what's going on? I suspect 32 vs 64 bit issues, but SuSE's approach to java configuration is so bizarre I haven't been able to figure it out. Is there an 10.0 iso image for network installation? There was one in the 9.3 tree. I realize I can use CD1 with manual=1 to start a network install, but I need to do a network install of x86_64.. Is there another flag for that? eric

(Sorry for the top posting, I have yet to figure out how to get Outlook to properly inline post) I'm running 10.0 x64 and have had no network issues. My system is a desktop and not a laptop. The x64 system was a fresh install, but I have a 32bit system that I upgraded from 9.3 (with politically incorrect media players as well). Those players were marked in YAST as do not upgrade. They were preserved through the upgrade and continue to work quite nicely under 10.0. My 32bit system that I upgraded is running MythTV. Problems

I am having problems running 10.0. DLed it (DVD version) and it install great but, when it does its last reboot I hear the music but my monitor(Viewsonic VE910b) reports Out of Range. I've tried setting the resolution at 1024 X 768 but nothing works. Even tried using my wifes monitor(el cheapo) and her's blanks the monitor. Help! Please. Video card is an ATI AIW x600. Thanks

I would probably set up a static IP address for the PC to PC cross-over cable (one per host attached to the cable) that is on a different subnet than the rest of your internal network. apt-get errors in 9.3

Hi, I get unsigned-packages errors in apt-get and synaptic for 9.3. In synaptic, I specifically unchecked "Check Signatures," but I still get the same error. It seems the apt-get site was updated within the past week or so. The downloads are much quicker, too. Any ideas? UPS is bringing my 10.0 :) , but I am installing 9.3 on a friend's computer; he wants his computer "yesterday." This is a frustrating experience because these errors prevent me, among other things, from installing the "good" media players, which depend on libraries such as 'lib-xine', which must be installed in the place of SuSE's politically-correct 'xine-lib'. I think that SuSE should reconsider its policy of eviscerating its media players and assorted libraries. CF

Mark, On my dual NIC systems under 9.3, I only configure the NIC that I want to use. Otherwise on boot the system will spend 20 seconds waiting for DHCP to timeout for the NIC that isn't plugged in. SuSE 10, sound and Thinkpad

I realize that this is not a amd64 question so I am sorry if it is inappropiate. I have asked on several forums and not had one reply. The folks here are very knowledgable so I am hoping someone has an idea for me. I have installed Novell/SuSE 10.0 on my trusty IBM Thinkpad 600e. I have used this TP for several years, starting with SuSE 9.0. It has worked great. I did have a few problems starting the sound with 9.0 but managed to get it going. When I used it with 9.2 I had absolutly no problem with anything other than APM. Sound worked great. With this same new laptop I have not been able to make the soind work correctly at all. If I go into YaST>Hardware>Sound I show two sound cards. CS4239 that will not open for editing, nor can it be deleted. I have to delete the sound file from /etc/modprobe.d. When this is done the other sound card(CS4610 Sound Fusion Audio Acceleraror. Using Driver snd-CS4232) in the sound configuration window can be edited as sound card 0. I can set the parameters to what they should be and the test sound plays great. Nothing else will play through the speakers. After a reboot only chirps and scratchy stuff will come out of the speakers even the test sound plays this way. If I go back to the yast sound configuration page and edit using advanced setup all the parameters are correct but I need to highlight them and press set. Then the test sound will play as before, but nothing else plays at all. If I try to set the volume plugin in my gkrellm there is no device available. Using Kmix the tray icon show a red x and has no controls when opened. I have tried other solutions, alsaconf, modprobe,etc. and have had the same results. David

But is there a web admin interface for SLES 9? VNC works, but from what I see in SLES8 there is a web interface administration tool. In 9? Hi to all, I just installed Suse Enterprise 9 and I read in the documentation that there is a web administration interface for managing the server. Is this OpenWbem??? ... if yes then.... HOW Do I use it? I'm trying to make it work somehow, but can't find the "main ideea".I followed http://www.novell.com/coolsolutions/feature/14625.html these suggestions, but still don't get the main Ideea. mod_dav_svn not included with SuSE 10?

I am unable to find the mod_dav_svn.so file on my newly installed SuSE 10 GE install. I have all things installed for subversion along with almost all things apache2 installed. I am almost wondering if it was somehow missed. Has anyone seen this before or got it to work already. Hello, unfortunately, I still have the same problem as described in this discussion: http://lists.suse.com/archive/suse-amd64/2005-Jul/0040.html Every five seconds the machine seems to 'sleep' for a short moment and does not accept keyboard input and/or mouse movements. 9.2 -> 9.3, lost wireless

I finally got around to updating my laptop from 9.2 to 9.3. And now the wireless doesn't work. Everything seems to be okay, but it won't get an address if in dhcp. Will let me set a static ip, but won't even ping the router. I did an online update via wire last night, no joy. This is a built in wireless b in a 2 yr old toshiba laptop. It's been working in 9.1 and 9.2. Shows up as an Intersil Prism or something like that. Can anyone give me some troubleshooting ideas? Thanks, Joe

SuSE 10 and the mystery of the vanishing CPU cycles

Hi, Just installed SuSE10 on an AMD64 (hence cross posting). I prefer Gnome and have been running with that for a few days, and have noticed a pretty serious problem. For no apparent reason the CPU utilization will go to 100% after I've been using the machine normally. If I look with top there are 3 candidate processes for hogging the CPU: gnome-settings, gnome-panel and nautilus. Looking around on the net, the nearest thing I can find is a bug with gnome-vfs (in Gnome 2.8) that caused similar problems and seemed to be related to nfs mounted home directories (which mine are). Has anyone else seen this behaviour - other weird slow-downs? Anyone got any ideas on how to fix this? I saw a suggestion for deleting .gconf and .gconfd - but that has not fixed the problem for me. Hi to all, We have a Fujitsu Siemens Econel 200 Server. 2x Intel Xeon 2.8, 2x SATA HDD. Suse 9.1 64 Prof is installed. At the moment we are using a software raid, but we want to buy 2 more HDD's and implement a 0+1 or 1+0 RAID. I looked over and over about raid controllers, have found from 120 EURO's to 1000 EURO's but there seems to be a little problematic the Suse 64 driver. A very convenient driver would be the Promise FastTrack S150 TX4 or SX4 controller but I still don't know if the drivers are quite functional. The tx4 seems faster as the sx4 but has no 64 driver. We had in the past some problems with hardware raid controller on suse. Does anyone uses some good raid controllers and could give me some informations? Regards, Andy.

system completely freezes

Hi, I installed Suse 10.RC1 on an amilo 1630V laptop for a couple of weeks ago and since then my system randomly freezes (aprox once a day). I now installed release 10 from scratch (no update) and I still get the same behaviour. Nothing "strange" is written in /var/log/messages. Does somebody have some ideas on the reasons for this or on how to track down the reasons ? The system really freezes, it is not just the display. Regards Michele

apt-get slow as molasses

Has anybody tried apt-get for 9.3 recently? It seems to me that it has slowed down the past couple of months. The web site for apt-get for SuSE does not even mention the 64-bit 9.3, let alone 10.0. hello, SuSE 9.3 x86_64 system: Gigabyte ga-k8n ultra-9 Asus 6800 EN Nvidia pci-x video 1 GB Ocz 2-3-2-5 RAM hd: WD 2500JD SATA (JBOD nv_sata_0) I'm having trouble setting up the two LAN devices in Yast network devices. In the manual, it shows the LAN1 (Marvel) as connected to the (faster) pci-x bus. I only want to connect a single cable at this time. When I configure both devices, the system rolls over: I lose SAMBA and bootup behavior is inconsistent. If you are going to setup both devices, what setting do you give "device activation" in the "detailed network settings" window? I tried hotplug for both (bad), "at boot" for LAN1 and hotplug for LAN2 (bad). I finally decided to disable LAN2 in the bios and delete it in Yast Network devices. Then LAN1 is set to activate at boot. This solution (to disable LAN2) seems extreme. I'm guessing I ran into trouble since at one point I gave both devices the same settings. If I tried to change them something wouldn't reset. Hi, I've been trying to get rid of the arts server. In order to run the ALSA-agnostic skype (closed 32-bit binary), I created the following wrapper script, which I named 'osswrap': # File ~/osswrap export LD_PRELOAD=$LD_PRELOAD:/usr/lib/libaoss.so exec $@ [ NOTE: The second command is VERY important. If I include the first line in, say, '/etc/profile.local', the shells do weird things, as if the $LD-PRELOAD variable takes control of everything. I am speaking from memory here. So, I decided to go with the script. The 'exec' command basically starts a new shell with the new $LD_PRELOAD.] I try to invoke skype with './osswrap skype'. It almost runs --almost, but not quite. For a couple of seconds the sound is fine but then it goes quiet and I get the following errors: volume_adjust: SOUND_MIXER_WRITE_IGAIN failed: Invalid argument read error, res = -1 , handle = 39 read error, res = -1 , handle = 48 I run all this on a Compaq Presario R3240 laptop (AMD64-based, of course), with an nVidia chipset and nVidia graphics card (the latter is probably irrelevant here). My ~/.asoundrc file is as follows: pcm.dsp0 { type plug slave.pcm "dmix" } pcm.dsp { type plug slave.pcm "dmix" } pcm.dsp-1 { type plug slave.pcm "dmix" } pcm.dsp1 { type plug slave.pcm "dmix" } pcm.dsp2 { type plug slave.pcm "dmix" } ctl.mixer0 { type hw card 0 } (I know I may have too many devices declared, but this is what I ended up with after many iterations. Probably most of these devices are useless.) The reason I am trying to get away from arts is that artsdsp seems to be inordinately slow after I installed several cryptography-related modules via YAST (actually booting into KDE seems to have slowed down, too). I am not sure if these newly-installed programs are the culprit; I did try to remove the modules 'cryptoloop' and 'twofish' (which did not get loaded before), but that did not improve things. If I run skype "straight," that is, just invoking it via 'skype', it runs alright, BUT it monopolizes the sound card. I am running 9.3. Could there be something wrong with the oss emulation library? I would like to upgrade from 9.2 to 10.0. With the 9.2 I had to purchase driverloader from linuxant. Does anyone know if Novell and 10.0 has a 64bit driver for the built in broadcom BCM4306/BCM2050 builtin wireless adapter? I have a HP pavillion laptop with a AMD64 Athlon. David
