Looking around on the net, the nearest thing I can find is a bug with
gnome-vfs (in Gnome 2.8) that caused similar problems and seemed to be

Has anyone else seen this behaviour - other weird slow-downs?
Anyone got any ideas on how to fix this? I saw a suggestion for deleting
.gconf and .gconfd - but that has not fixed the problem for me.
