Hi, I'm looking for a fully supported by SuSE 9.1 Athlon 64 (socket 754) motherboard, my latest http://hardwaredb.suse.de/ search provided only three "unknown status" results, the database is likely out of date. Thanks for any suggestion and/or experience report. I'd like to avoid binary only drivers (no tainted kernel thanks :) and if possible gigabit internet. Laurent

Hi, I have a new machine with these specs: TYAN THUNDER K8W 2885 2 CPU AMD OPTERON 2 VIE 242 1,6 GHZ 2 CORSAIR ECC REG PC 2100 1GB CAS 2,5 LOW PROFILE HARD DISK MAXTOR 120GB SATA 8 MB VIDEO NVDIA FX 5200 ASUS V 9520 MAGIC 1 DVD+/- R RW ASUS DRW0804P DUAL RET Since I'm a newbie I'd like to know if there are particular cautions or checks I must have in mind during the installation of 9.1 AMD-64. Hi Holger, We are not using the same processors, but have been seeing intermittent system hangs on our dual Opterons 244, and up to now, still being baffled by these problems. But in your case, it appears to be memory trouble, and you may like to strip down the memory to a single unit and try the memtest again. I sent a similar email on system hang problems sometime ago, and got quite a few responses. Apparently I am not alone with AMD Opteron processors. Someone (sorry I missed his name) pointed out the AMD Revision Guide http://www.amd.com/us-en/assets/content_type/white_papers_and_tech_docs/2575 9.pdf This mentions quite a few problems on the CPU that can result in system hangs. I don't know if these problems have been rectified and most of them are described to be "fix planned" in this June dated document. My supplier provided me a beta release of Tyan BIOS which I have started to roll out. But I take it that these only get round the problems on the Opteron processors by turning certain BIOS function flags off. I suppose proper fixes are needed on the CPUs themselves. Soundcards. Any Recomendations?

Hi There, I am in NZ and I can only really get 2 brands that are any good. Terratec and Creative. I would like a nice mid-high end sound card. And would like to know which of the terratec ranges and creative ranges work well with alsa and in particular suse 9.1. I.e I don't want to pay for a Terratec with a breakout box and the breakout box not be support, the same goes for creative. So can someone recomend particular products which are good. I know that Envy 24 chipset is well supported and i've looked through alsa soundcard matrix, but I would like some personal recomendations feedback.

SuSE 9.1 on MSI K8T Master-FAR SATA disk i/o problem

Grüss, I have 4 of these systems that will go into production soon. 3 of them are exactly the same, while the 4th has different hard drives. All of them are experiencing the same problem. I have gone from FreeBSD 5.2.1 to Mandrake 10 (amd64 RC1) to SuSE 9.1 Professional (DVD box set) in search of something that will actually work and perform well. I just used YaST to download the most recent kernel patches, so I'm now at 2.6.4-54-5-smp. Here is my configuration: MSI K8T Master2-FAR 2x Opteron 242 2x 512MB OCZ DDR400 RAM ("Specially Engineered and Optimized for the AMD Athlon64 FX platform") 2x WD Raptor 36GB (also WD 160GB SATA drives) 52x IDE CD-ROM 360 Watt Thermaltake PS These will be servers, so they have no video cards in them (therefore no X etc.). I used an old ViRGE PCI card to do the install. (ncurses based YaST could use some work BTW, particularly in setting up the partitions) I have a fresh install of SuSE 9.1 Professional, installed off of the DVD in the box set. I had to disable acpi in order to install, and naturally I went with the Linux software RAID to raid the disks. Watching top is very interesting. Right before a crash, the wa (I/O wait) CPU % goes way up, 50% or more. Then the system becomes unresponsive. I've searched the 'net and this list and still haven't come up with a thorough prescription for how to fix my problem. I seemed to have made some progress after enabling the libata driver, as the test machine lasted a lot longer this time before failing. I've got INITRD_MODULES="via_sata libata reiserfs raid1" in /etc/sysconfig/kernel and append = "resume=/dev/hda11 splash=silent acpi=off apm=off console=tty0" in /etc/lilo.conf. I'm not sure if the libata module "took"; someone else said that I needed to see my SATA drives as sd# rather than hd#. Well, in the boot messages the drives were still called hda and hdc. I am unfamiliar with the entire kernel rebuilding process in Linux, and with how the modules work. Mostly I just want to hear from somebody else who has this motherboard, exactly what they did to get everything working, because I've tried everything I'm capable of doing. I've found some helpful things so far, but I haven't yet hit the magic bullet. Of course I can put up any further needed information. I've just got to get these machines working! Hi all, I'm trying to install octave-forge-2004.02.12 downloaded from http://sourceforge.net/projects/octave/ and ./configure fails with the following error message: checking for mkoctfile... mkoctfile /usr/lib64/gcc-lib/x86_64-suse-linux/3.3.3/../../../../x86_64-suse-linux/bin/ld: cannot find -lncurses collect2: ld returned 1 exit status configure: error: Could not run mkoctfile I have submitted this as bug 980116 at http://sourceforge.net/projects/octave/ Has anyone successfully built octave-forge on SuSE 9.1 AMD64? Can't create driver update floppy

Having gone through the howto http://mirror.mcs.anl.gov/suse-people/hvogel/Update-Media-HOWTO/html/ for creating an update floppy I still receive the "no floppy found" when linuxrc tries to read the floppy. Specifying /dev/fd0 does not yield any good results either. Does anyone have a x86_64 update floppy that they have successfully used to perform a pre-install driver update load to SuSE 9.1 Professional?

I got the Albatron K8X800 because it was a second-rated board on all the reviews I read and it had many more built-ins, but now it seems to be harder to find. I had problems with a hypertransport Hard Drive, but it turned out to be circutry on the drive and a replaced HD solved it. I use the on-board SATA, Gig-E,USB, Firewire, and sound. Its been rock solid and all HW I've used is completely supported in 9.0. I just purchased my upgrade and probably won't install for a two or three weeks, however. I really hate to bother it. I don't think its even been rebooted in about 3 months. BTW, this board's specs and price are most like the Gigabyte in comparison and uses the same chipset. RAID 5 issues

I am currently trying to 'nail down' if problems I am seeing with software raid 5 are related to hardware or software. The symptoms: The last drive in the array (sdg in this example, the array consists out of 6 partitions, each partition is the only partition on a 146 GByte drive) is all for sudden marked as 'failed'. Upon reboot, I did a thorough check of the drive, using the 'validate' tool build in to the scsi card (LSI card) and checking the smart tools self test. No errors where found. I added the partition back to the array, and everything looks fine... until a week later the same thing happened again. When I built my system a few weeks ago, I started with a Chaintech ZNF3-250 board. I had non-stop problems - system hangs, malfunctioning peripherals etc. I took it back and in its place bought a Gigabyte GA-K8VNXP. I have had no problems whatsoever. To me, it's important that a manufacturer releases frequent BIOS updates to correct problems and respond to consumer issues. Gigabyte is on release 6 for this board, whereas Chaintech has released no updates for theirs, as far as I know. Question about movie players - AVI, QT and DVDs

I wondered if anyone has had success with any of the various movie players in being able to play AVI files and/or QuickTime. So far, Xine and Kaffeine don't allow me to play the video. Sound works fine through these players, but no video. I figure I'm probably just missing one or more packages, but what I've located so far doesn't seem to work with x86_64. I haven't been successful in getting MPlayer to install, since it's not part of the SuSE distribution. Ultimately, I'd like to be able to play AVI, QT and MPEG video, and also DVDs - although from what I'm reading, there's a licensing issue with DVD players so SuSE doesn't ship Xine ready to do that. Just looking for any guidance on what to try, especially if there's a recommended 'all-in-one' solution. Thanks! Mark

64bit cross compiler for sl91 target on a redhat 8.0

Hi all: I am building a 64bit cross compiler for sl91 target on a redhat 8.0 for myself. I do have an AMD64 system that installed a sl91 AMD64 on it. I compiled gcc3.3.3 amd64 package --enabled-languege=c I compiled binutil. But when I compile glibc, the configure command reported cannot detemine the size of unsigned long and refused to go any further. My plan was to compile: gcc3.3.3 amd64 --enabled-langueges=c binutils glibc gcc3.3.3amd64 with all langueges is there anything wrong with this procedure? Help is greately appreciated. Richard

Block-major-65

Hi Folks, I just applied the latest set of patches to my SLES 8 system, and after I rebooted, I keep getting the console message: modprobe: Can't locate module block-major-65 This is repeating very quickly, so I'm guessing something is restarting modprobe to try load this module. Is this a problem I need to worry about? What does this module do? How do I either fix this or stop it? thanks, eyc

The instructions provided by Joel Pauling were both clear and exceptionally useful at getting the Nvidia driver loaded on my box. My stock 2.6.5 suse kernel was replaced with a kernel 2.6.7 from kernel.org. Thus I had no precomiled nivida. By patching against the 'official' install source from Nvidia I was able to compile and load the nvidia.ko module. I had spent several days attempting to get the pre-build packages provided by www.minion.de to work. Patching against the 'official' source gave me a working module. ioctl32 and UT2004 - success :)

Hi, Since I haven't found an updated DRI driver(maybe I wasn't looking hard enough) that would be useable with UT2004 and the like _and_ support 32bit applications, I took the first graphical diff tool I've ran into(tkxcd) and tried to "merge" whatever there was that seemed relevant in the km_drm package and the newer driver in the 2.6.7 kernel... To my amazement, it actually worked with only one compiler error to fix at the first try :) What's even better, not only did it compile, but it seems to run, too, and so far I don't have any more problems than with the older driver(e.g. switching from console to X and back a few times freezes the system), and I can play UT2004(64bit), UT(32bit), ET(32bit), etc even with 24bit colour(16bit colour tends to make UT ugly :( In case it's interesting to anyone, attached are the quick diffs for the Radeon driver, to be applied to the 2.6.7 tree after the latest patches from amd64-org. (note: my knowledge of C tends to 0, and I'm not responsible if there's something terribly wrong with them) P.S. One question: so why isn't 32bit emulation for DRI included into the official kernel tree? Or at least with the patches at amd64.org?

Trying to install the nvidia driver

I followed the instructions for installing the patched nvidia driver for my FX5200 with YOU, but I just get a brief nvidia flash screen and then the screen goes blank and my LCD monitor switches off. The "nv" driver works fine, though I had to go into rescue mode to restore it. "Failsafe" doesn't work and just hangs the machine after a lot of hex messages scroll up the screen ending with "console shuts up". I've been reading some of these nvidia threads, and I wonder if I've just gotten lucky up to now. I have a Nvidia 5700LE, and so far have only done the YAST update. My graphics intensive games are running fine (e.g. Racer), and no problems with the "real work" apps either. Is there a particular application in which the weakness of this driver might show up? <mc>

Some problems on SuSE9.1/AMD64

Hi, I installed SuSE9.1 on my dual Opteron computer with TYAN2885. I have two problems and hope someone can help. 1. I am not able to install SuSE9.1 with NFS, the installer failed to load the network crad module, I tried bcm5700, tg3 and others from the network module list, with parameter set to eth0, the specified modules were not found by the installer. I wonder what might be the problem? I used both the downloaded boot image and a SuSE9.1 DVD for this installation. 2. After installed SuSE9.1 with the DVD, and I tried the beta version of a 3D visualization program Amira, I got the following error message: /usr/lib64/libGL.so.1 : no version information available Somehow the program does not pick up the version information of libGL.so.1 which does exist. 9.1 update fails to boot LSI Megaraid

good day all ... ok, a clean install on my HDAMA dual 242 system works fine. i update to the current kernel via YOU this morning and now i have megaraid problems. boot sequence goes as: start udev creating devices loading scsi_mod.ko scsi subsystem init loading sd_mod.ko loading megaraid_mm.ko megaraid_mm: 1.0.0rc1 (release date monday may 17) loading megaraid.ko megaraid: ingnoring new style parameters ... megaraid: 2.20.0.rc1 (release date monday may 17) megaraid: probe new devices ... megaraid mailbox: status not available megaraid: inquiry3 failed megaraid: maibox adapter did not initialize ... loading reiserfs.ko then it tries to find the root filesystem on sd1 and fails because its on the raid array. is this a known lsi megaraid issuse, is there a workaround or fix? will loading one of the KOTD kernels help? -- michael
