Has anyone managed to get any DVD playing software running properly under SuSE 9 for the AMD64? I've got an ASUS K8V Deluxe MB and an NVIDIA GF5200FX video card, for what that's worth. I've been trying, with little success, to compile a working version of the 'Ogle' DVD player, but am running into all sorts of dependency issues with RPMs, and missing library issues compiling from source. If someone else has gotten this working, I'd be interested in hearing exactly what RPMs/source files you used and what steps you followed. Dvdauthor problems...

Has anyone else had success using the dvdauthor program (http://dvdauthor.sourceforge.net) to create dvd menus? My efforts keep failing with the spumux program (part of dvdauthor) failing with: INFO: Locale=en_US.UTF-8 INFO: Converting filenames to UTF-8 ERR: Cannot convert UTF8 string 'buttonsone.png': Invalid or incomplete multibyte or wide character I've tried every variation of setting the Locale to UTF-8 or ISO-8859-1, etc but no luck... Using all the same software on a older AMD computer running a 32-bit version of linux, I have no problems... I don't know a lot about character encodings, so I'm a bit lost here and am hoping someone else with an AMD64 has gotten these programs working with SuSE linux. For what it's worth, I've tracked down the portion of the code that fails (and produces the above error) to be related to a call to the 'iconv' program. Any clues, hints, virtual kicks-to-the-head, etc would be appreciated.... Larry Prikockis

video editing on suse 9.0 amd64

hello all, I tried to do some Video editing (capture from my DV-camera, cut the film, export to mpeg and burn on dvd) on my suse9.0 amd64 box (uname -ir: 2.4.21-209-default x86_64). what I tried is: - running mainactor 5.1 beta: runs, but no possibility to capture - running mainactor 5.2 beta: possibility to capture, but stops with segmentation fault - running kino 0.6.4: runs, can capture [:-)))], but can't export to mpeg. After some research, I found that the export problem caused by the fact the suse mjpegtools rpm lacks some important files (mp2enc, mpeg2enc,...) according to license problems for suse to put them on the dvd. For my 32-Bit Suse9.0 Linux I found complete mjpegtools rpm's at http://packman.links2linux.de/index.php4?action=154&vn=2 With this rpm I was able to export my videos in my 32-Bit Suse9.0. So here are my questions: Does anybody know where to find a complete mjpegtools rpm for suse9.0 amd64 ? Or have I to compile it by my self ? If I have to compile it: is it only: 'configure...make...install' or much complicated ? regards detlef oertel

Dual-Opteron w/ 8GB RAM boot problem

I installed SuSE 9.0 for x86_64 on the following box but I'm having boot problems when the machine is loaded with 8GB of RAM: Dual Opteron 248 8GB RAM (in 8 1GB sticks) Tyan K8W (S2885) - BIOS Rev 1.02 Adaptec 29320 If I take out half the RAM so that I only have 4GB total in the system, everything works fine. Samba 2GB file limit???

Hi, I recently became aware (the hard way) about a kernel limitation in 2.4.x that prevents a linux client from reading files larger than 2GB from a SMB filesystem. The situation is that our AMD64 Linux server, running SuSE 9.0, (kernel 2.4.21-171-smp, samba-2.2.8a-108) is serving files to windows and linux machines. I have successfully created and read files over 12GB in size from a dual opteron machine running Windows Server 2003 beta for x86-64. The linux machine (dual Xeon, SuSE9.0 for x86, kernel 2.4.21-166-smp, samba-2.2.8a-107) fails to read files over 2GB from the same server. According to the Samba lists, this is not due to limitations of Samba 2.x, but rather it is a limit in smbfs in the 2.4 kernel, and there are patches available to overcome it (smbfs-2.4.xx-lfs.patch). Has this issue been resolved in the 2.6 kernel? If so, then I will simply upgrade to SuSE 9.1. If not, I may have to rebuild my kernels. Do you know where I can find a patch for current SuSE kernels? Crashes...

Hey Susers (what is Suseonians better?), I still have frequent system halts/crashes due to what appears to be the NVidia driver. Does anyone else have this? Do we just put up with it for now? I feel like I'm a Windows user rebooting my damn machine all the time. (2x tonight). network not working with Suse 9.1 (amd64)

Hi, I have just installed Suse 9.1 on a Fujitsu/Siemens Scaleo 600 with an AMD64 3200+ processor. I installed both versions (32 and 64 bit) in different partitions. The 32 bit version is running fine, sound, card reader and the network. In the 64 bit version the network card is recognized as "Linksys Network Everywhere Fast Ethernet 10/100 model NC100 (rev11)", same as in 32bit. Yast didn't put in the tulip driver, I did that manually. I am not able to get a dhcp address from my dhcp server, so I set up IP address, host name, router and name server by hand. I can start the network, ifconfig shows correct values, but I cant use it. netstat -r hangs, if I ping a different machine in my net I get a ping answer with the following error: wrong data byte #30 should be 0x1e but was 0x2f I cannot ping the 64bit machine from a different one. I don't think it's a hardware problem, because the 9.1 32 bit version on the very same machine runs without any problems. Has anybody a clue what might be wrong? Peter

Couldn't mount XFS-partitions

I installed the SuSE 9.1 for amd64 yesterday. Primerly i configured some XFS partitions with YaST. After the formatting occurred a error message like unable to mount /dev/hde1 on /mnt/ ... - Ignore/Abort/Retry . If i click on one of these buttons the system hangs. On console 4 appears a kernel bug message. After all i changed the format to Ext3 and this worked well. Is that a known problem? Anybody here who has a working XFS-Filesystem under SuSE 9.1? Shutdown/Restart problem !

After the installation of SuSE 9.1 (amd64) on my new AMD Athlon64 3000+ (2.0 GHz) with VIA K8T800 FIS2R Mainboard i tried to shutdown the system from KDE, but the shutdown process hangs after "sending all processes the KILL signal". SUSE 9.1 Professional In Canada

I called the U of T bookstore (my usual supplier) to get a timeline on when I can expect the SUSE 9.1 Professional release and they said : May 8 is the US release date, two weeks later (May 22) for Canada. I would like to receive the CDs/DVDs from a Canadian source (to avoid shipping across the border - always painful for individuals) the first week in May , if possible. Does anyone know the answer to this ? If there is a mail order site in Canada or a store with stock of 9.1 Professional in the Toronto area, that would help. PS: I need Professional for my AMD64 system.

SLES 8 install problems and Oracle

Hello, I am trying to install the SLES 8 I bought from the SuSE store: http://www.digitalriver.com/dr/v2/ec_MAIN.Entry10?V1=476399&PN=1&SP=10023&x… onto a dual Opteron 244 system on a MSI K8D Master FT board. My first couple of attempts to install the software resulted in some strange behaviour. The system came up, but could not start up the network interfaces that are built into the board. I believe they are Broadcom TG3 interfaces. It also had trouble recognizing the Adaptec 39320D-R SCSI interface I plugged into its single slot. Try as I might, I could get the Yast to configure these properly. So I tried to rebuild the kernel in /usr/src/linux-2.4.19.SuSE. However, after I customized my configuration, I get an error when I run make dep. So I gave up on it for now. My server came with another SuSE version 8 Linux that was specific to AMD64. That version did correctly recognize the Broadcom Gig-E interfaces and the Adaptec SCSI HBA. But when I created a partition from the RAID that I had attached, I got strange corruption errors. It turns out that the RAID array was slightly bigger than 1TB in size, and writing to it clobbered the partition tables. So after I reformatted the RAID to break it up into two smaller LUNs, I was able to create a new file system and reliably write to it without wiping out the partition tables. So this brings up the question of how big a storage device can SLES 8 work with? On that other Linux distribution, the limit was around 4TBs. Through all the problems I had, I forgot that the original purpose of setting up this server was to install an Oracle 9i DB server. Well, it turns out that Oracle does not support AMD64 Linux at all. So I will need to install a 32 bit OS onto this Opteron server and force the CPU to run in 32 bit compatibility mode. It looks like the disks that came with the OS that I purchased has a distribution for x86 as well as x86-64. So the second question is: How do I get the install procedure on this disk to install the AMD-32 OS? I need to make the install procedure to force the Opteron into the 32 bit compatibility mode. Setting up a 4 head system

I am trying to set up a 4 headed system and I am running into problems. The basic situation is I have 3 video cards, each with 2 outputs. I can dual head any of the cards, but I cannot get any of the cards to work with ech other. I have 1 AGP Geforce FX5700 and 2 PCI ATI 9200SE. I had the two ati cards in a four head system on my Redhat 9 machine. The same XF86Config file does not work. I have upgraded to XFree86 4.4 which recognizes the 9200SE's but I am still only able to get one card working at a time. I used the standard radeon driver with no ChipID. I have tried the following options to my XF86Config file: NoInt10 true ConnectedMonitor CRT,CRT NoAccel true Any help would be create. puzzling nic problem

upgrading 9.0 to 9.1 comes up with /dev/hda instead of /dev/hde error...

hi there, have a suse 9.0 test system running on an asus k8v-deluxe board. some old ide drive attached to the primary onboard (non-raid) via chipset. in 9.0 the drive is /dev/hda, about 4 gigs in size. now then i insert the 9.1 dvd, and select update installed system, yast2 gives me some mount errors, and complains that /etc/fstab displays /dev/hda although the drive is actually /dev/hde it says. so whats wrong here? did some device numbering mechanisms changed with the new kernel 2.6? i cant make yast2 mount the drive no matter what i do. thought 9.0->9.1 would be less hassle ;) thanks, andy

memtest86+ to be included on future amd64 suse linux products?

hello there, i seem to have some bit errors in one of my memory modules on an asus k8v-d with two corsair cmx512-3200ll (xms3205v1.2) ddr 400mhz modules. memtest86 (on the suse linux 9.0) x86 media didnt recognize the board/hardware, but still reported the same failures, as the newer memtest86+ from http://www.memtest.org/ the memory module displays errors in test #5 at about 107mb and 123mb. the other module passes the tests just fine. the memtest86+ also supports the x86 platform, and correctly displays chipset and hardware information of the newer boards and amd64 platform. maybe suse will consider to include this into their amd64 products like they have the older memtest86 3.0 on their suse linux 9.0 for x86 media. thanks and cheers, andy

I was wondering if anyone who has done some data visualizing could tell me whether or not I should stick with python or move to scheme in the 64bit realm if I would like to work with equations and bitmap graphics and 3d (opengl or something better I'm open to suggestions). I will need access to sse2 for speed of floating point and integer I guess I'm ok but what I'm looking for is both a good api like an algebra and a calculus system (that visualizes in teXmacs) and also comes with a library of equations on the order of a few million or most if not all available. I just want to be able to browse inline without having to download everything piece meal. I guess this is an application if not a series of screnes which right now I only have one of. Right now I'm at teXmacs for fun but to my knowledge it doesn't allow inlining html or urls anyone wanna help? SuSE 9.1 for AMD64 and nVidia Driver

I think the drivers that are available from nvidia for amd64 don't support the kernel 2.6 . Is it possible to install the nvidia drivers with YOU in the same way as under SuSE for IA32 (maybe SuSE has a special port of the drivers) or do i have to run a 2.4.x kernel? Art, There is a specific list for suse on AMD64: suse-amd64(a)suse.com. There is a high signal to noise ratio and two of the Suse developers regularly post there. I would expect 64-bit kernel to work and be supported on both of these CPUs - often the portability issues are more to do with the Mobo's - Sata, Nvidea et al. also IMHO the 'FX is basically the same chip as the Opteron - and can be used in dual-cpu servers. The 3400+ is just a x86 souped up to 64-bit instruction set and registers and doesn't have the dual-channel integrated memory controller like the FX and Opteron have. Apart from cost, I don't see at as an obvious choice for clusters. Usb problem on tyan k8w

Hello, (Newbie Here) I am having some great difficulty in getting my hp psc 2175 to work on the thunder k8w dual opteron board. Tyan's site lists some patches etc... for the nvidia card support, but I have a kernel with all but the mtrr patch included after having done an update. It is 2.4. series kernel though. Does the mtrr have anything to do with usb? ptal-init setup does not see the device, even though it is listed in /proc/ bus/usb/devices. It is also listed as a scsi device. The only scsi device I have is the adaptec pci-x single channel controller card with a seageate cheetah attached. Why the printer would list out on both usb and scsi is a mystery to me. Has anyone run into this or know if there are issues with the usb and 9.0 on this motherboard? I also have an adaptec 4 port usb 2.0 pci card in my legacy pci slot. When plugged into this ptal will start the setup, and then hang on /dev/usb/lp0 every time when I choose scan for usb devices. Will the 2.6.X kernel solve some of these problems? I plan on buying SuSE 9.1 when it becomes available but have went with the regular 32bit 9.0 for now until I can get the new and improved SuSE. VIA SATA problems

Hello, I realise that this topic has been covered quite a lot, but hopefully someone will be able to offer me some more advice. I've just bought a nice fast PC to be the main development machine for my startup software company. Most of my work involves open source, so Linux seemed the best option for me, I already run Suse 9 pro on my laptop so thought that would be the best option, especially as it supports AMD64. So obviously I was hugely disappointed to find installing it was a complete non-starter. I've tried to follow the instructions posted here, but so far no luck, and to be honest I have a business to run, and I can't afford to spend much more time on this. I know I should have checked to see if Linux would support my hardware, but I just assumed it would (it installed on my laptop so easily!). Windows XP pro is arriving today, this is the first time I've bought a Microsoft product. My PC is as follows: Mobo: GA-K8VNXP with onboard Via 8237 controller Hard drive: 2 x Seagate Serial ATA 120GB CPU: AMD64 3200XP Raid 0 has been configured in Bios and the array marked as the bootable drive. The GigaRaid option has been turned off (as I think this only applies for pata drives, I may be wrong in this), and I have configured RAID using the BIOS menus for the Via 8237 controller. I have downloaded the SATA patch CD, and have tried installing in safe mode with the settings such as poll=idle apm=off acpi=off, I have disabled the USB keyboard and mouse in bios, Booting with the patch CD gives me this message: crc error<6>ide-floppy driver 0.99.newide VFS: Cannot open root device "" or 03:06 Please append a correct "root=" boot option Kernel panic: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on 03:06 If anyone has some advice on how to get Suse installed on this machine I'd be greatful, but if it involves days (or weeks) of wrestling with kernel updates and the like, I simply can't afford to do that, I have clients waiting for their software. More VIA/SATA issues

Ok, I am at a loss. I am having increasingly frequent disk timeouts which have caused me to have to rebuild my system, and now I can't even boot the re-installed system. Its a VIA K8 Albatron MB with a maxtor 200G drive. The major symptom is that I have a clicking sound from the drive that seems to be the heads parking whenever it locks up and the sound then cycles every 30 seconds after that. I've tried 2.6.5 kernel with only worse results. I've tried turning off DMA, ACPI, APM, POLL, etc individually. With the failsafe boot it will work indefinitely without lock-up (or left overnight in install state) so it doesn't seem to be a hardware issue. Turning off APM and ACPI together seems to make it much better. I thought this was the DMA issue with VIA, but using 2.6.5 with/without DMA turned off still produces the same result. It does give a dma_timeout error on boot if dma is turned on in the bios, but turning dma off in bios (and kernel) does not solve the problem, it only gets rid of the message. And this seems to occur whether the sda scsi emulated driver is used or the hda driver is used, IE changing the initrd lines to point to a different via_sata and libata. Suggestions? This drive is supposed to support hypertransport, so I have a problem with just dumping it for an IDE drive, but I'm out of ideas at this point. Thanks.

ECC error detection and Kernel Question

We have seen a problem with copying a large volume between machines and the resulting volume having a different checksum than the source volume. We found a bad DIMM on the target machine using memtest, but we now have questions that need answers for our users. Since the memory controller is built in to the Opteron, and the Opteron uses ECC memory, is the ECC correction done at the hardware level via the memory controller ? Is this dependent on the motherboard chipset, or are the options the same regardless of chipset due to the controller being built onto the processor ? I seem to remember seeing some messages about whether or not to turn on background scrubbing on the ECC system at the BIOS level. Are there problems with the Linux kernel doing this, or is just a memory latency issue due to overhead ? If the hardware controller cannot correct the error, does it raise an exception to the OS ? If so, does the Linux kernel catch the signal ? Log the error, or crash the system ? Is this configurable ? We have a mix of the UnitedLinux kernel 2.4.19-smp, SuSE 9.0 2.4.21-193-smp, and the 2.4.22 kernel from kernel.org. Do these kernels need to be ECC aware to catch sny signals, and if so, are they ? But I don't think that's it. It stops completely if I boot in failsafe and I can compile a new kernel & install without problems in failsafe, etc. That would not seem to suggest hardware if its doing it so often outside of failsafe. Also, looking through list archives last night I noticed the acoustic info posted a while back. My drive, Maxtor Diamondmax Plus9, is not listed in the e-mail, but when I visited the maxtor site and did a search in their knowledgebase on acoustic, the DiamondMax Plus9 is listed as one of the drives that implement this "feature." I downloaded the amset utility to see if I could unset that just in case, but the amset will not scan past IDE controllers 0&1, and SATA controllers are IDE 2&3 on my system at least. This could be a possible cause I guess, but it just dosn't make sense to me, and I still have no way to fix it if it is. SuSe 9.0+scilab

Hello all, I am running a dual opteron 244 1.8GHz machine with Suse 9.0 (kernel 2.4.21-211-smp) and when trying to run scilab (version 2.7-120) this program allocates all available virtual memory until the machine crashes. I noticed a similar behaviour was reported under 8.2 beta last year, is there any work around or is there something misconfigured in my machine ??? These 2 dimms, when populated, are almost touching, while the other have a decent space between them. This probably isn't a huge deal but it worried me a little. The tyan board has a space between all 8 dimm slots. One final nit-pick in the HDAMA. Accelertech's website (www.accelertech.com) has been down for over a week now and is still down. Python and Suse AMD 64

I am a big fan of Suse Linux and also a huge python fan, unfortunately my one gig of memory goes quickly when in C mode :) and I can't get the hard drive to work enough (most of the time I don't see anything churning away because I don't do a lot of file work I guess its my main weekness at the moment. The install for most people will be the most the file system gets used (and booting applications) thats how fast my dualy 140 is. It takes a C app to bring it to its knees (no inline threads please). Balancing the machine in realtime might be a cool hack... Is there *any* way to make a process run in compressed memory aka not the hard drive?< I know futile manuever but python just takes up so much memory. Hi! There are 4 IDE-conectors on my mainboard. Thw first two are normaly! But the others are for a raid! Can I use this two conectors for may CD-R/RW? If I conect a cd-r oder cd-rw to the thrid or fourth conector, it isnt found by the system! What is the problem? regards Jan

Yes, ATI 9200 is supported. I have an ATI 9800Pro - a special fanless edition from Sapphire, with a HUGE heat-spreader - but these new ATI cards are not supported in 64-bit by that open source driver with its 3D functions, just the simpler 2D functionalities. See what RDI says about this on http://dri.sourceforge.net/cgi-bin/moin.cgi/ATIRadeon . Excerpt: "Open source 3D acceleration is available on all radeons up to and including the 9200 (rv280). 3D support for r300 based cards (9500 and above) is only available from ati's binary driver." 3D drivers in 64 bit are not available at all for newer ATI cards, be it Windows or Linux. I'm wondering about the nvidia support in SuSE 9.1. Currently, I'm unable to use nvidia driver with kernel 2.6, the compilation of the newest AMD64 5332 driver, breaks ... and when fixed, the kbuild script breaks. Another issue, is that I used the 2.4.21 kernel for a while, but found out that games that use the 3D extensions, looked screwed up, if they loaded at all. Probably due to the fact, that these games are 32bit, and the balance between 32bit and 64bit 3D rendering environment isn't too good. 1. Will there be a wroking nvidia driver, with SuSE 9.1. 2. Will 3D environment, be working for both 32bit and 64bit apps. Hope someone knows the answers.

Anyone know of a quick way to restore fonts to gnome, I'm fumbling in the dark ... all texts are displayed empty, which is really annoying. Was wondering if there's anyway to create a sanity check, so that I won't be stumbling in the dark when a gtk application fires up.

hello -- i'm sorry if this is not the appropriate place for this question. an hp loyalist has convinced some decision makers that we can't use opterons for an in house app because he claims there's no linux jvm that uses more than 3.8GB of memory. i couldn't find anything on the blackdown.org site backing this up, and couldn't find anything googling around. is he just spreading fud? does anyone here have experience and/or documentation that *nix 1.4+ java can use more than 3.8GB of ram? i just cringe when i see us purchasing super expensive quad itanium-2 boxes when our own in-house testing had our 2-way suse/opteron box out-performing a 4-way itanium(1) machine by 10%+. again, appologies if this would be better suited on the blackdown.org mailing list. info appriciated, -- john

Thanks for your reply, Yes, I have tried both updated drivers with no luck. Next (Friday I hope), I will try the original SLES drivers and see if they work. It is an interesting problem as boot procedes normaly to the point of the mount of the real root filesystem. At this point it panics complaining it cannot mount / on ... It seems like it might be looking for the wrong (or non-existent) partition. sdb1 is a swap partition and sdb2 is the / partition These translate to 0x817 and 0x818, but it seems like I remember other numbers than 0x818. I will have to check. Could the System map be bad? The /dev files are correct. Boot options to grub are correct (and I have tried varying the boot partition to see if I could fix it). I flashed the SCSI card bios to the latest and greatest but this had no effect. I am currently running memtest86 (36 hours) so should see if there are any problems there.

It is probably due to the fact that nta operations require 16 byte alignment, which might be broken when distributing the blocks. I have not tried, but using MPI should be ok (since every threads allocates its own memory, and allocate() seems to always align on 16 bytes). 2) PGI refuses to use nontemporal opcodes when operating on float (STREAM uses double). This is a bummer. What's worse, it rearranges loops so that more often than not ntazing by hand does not work due to aligment problems. 3) -O3 does not seem to make a big difference. Well, that's it for now. I better go back and do some real work. It has been fun! SSHD Segmentation Fault on AMD Opteron 248 SUSE 9.0

hi there... i recently experienced some weird things with latest openssh and different ssh linux clients if i connect or scp to my server (AMD64 Suse 9.0) from different Suse 8.2/9.0 clients with no given username (so the current username of the user, who executes ssh on his client is used) everything works fine if i give a username (user@server or -l user - no matter with or without pubkey) i get Have a lot of fun... connection closed in the logs i see something like Apr 15 19:01:05 nevanpdc sshd[2902]: Accepted keyboard-interactive/pam for root from ::ffff:192.168.0.1 port 49435 ssh2 Apr 15 19:01:05 nevanpdc kernel: sshd[2905]: segfault at 0000002a00000000 rip 0000002a966b5870 rsp 0000007fbfffe218 error 4 normally it should work ?!?!? is it a known problem? strange is: after a reboot it works for some time, until somebody tries a connection with pubkey to an other account then his own (e.g. root) then i get seg fault and after this the problems as described above start thx micha -- "Matrix - more than a vision" ************************************************** Michael Gasch - Central IT Department - Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology Deutscher Platz 6 04103 Leipzig Germany **************************************************
