Saturday, December 13th, starting at 10 am, at the hall "Levi" of
“Archimede” public library (Settimo Torinese - TO, Italy, Piazza
Campidoglio 50), the Italian openSUSE Advocates group, with GLugTO
(GNU / Linux user group Torino: www.glugto.org ) in collaboration with
FSUGItalia (Free software User Group Italia: www.fsugitalia.org) and
the Multimedia Library Archimede
(www.biblio.comune.settimo-torinese.to.it), with the participation of
the Association LibreItalia (www.libreitalia.com) are organizing the
openSUSE Meeting Italy 2014.
During the day will be presented the operating system and the latest
news, software, communities, projects, technical developments and the
many ways to be part of the project. There will be talks suitable for
a less experienced audience, and technical speeches designed for those
who want to deepen their knowledge in this area.
The event is open to everyone, not just to those who already know the
openSUSE operating system or who are already part of the FOSS
community. The purpose of this meeting is to share knowledge in an
open, direct and conscious manner, providing an easy way to keep in
touch and be a member of a worldwide community.
Details about the event and the program will be available at:
http://osmeeting.fsugitalia.org/ (only italian language)

Dear Members,
I recently had a chance to meet around twelve local pc vendors dealing
with personal computers here in Assam including the largest in the
North east region of India. Most of the PC users ask for Windowws OS
here but I asked them to provide Linux as an alternative. openSUSE
will be provided to them if they require from my end. Hoping to get
some more to install openSUSE.
Thanks,
Neel

Hi all,
I would like to share an event report:
We participated in Open Source Conference (OSC) 2014 Tokyo/Spring. It was the 100th in the
series of OSC. The series have been held in about ten cities in Japan every year. About
2000 people visited that conference for the two days.
http://www.ospn.jp/osc2014-spring/
A report (sorry, written in Japanese) is found here:
http://blog.geeko.jp/ftake/853
You can see a photo, slides, and a flyer there.
= Booth =
We showed small ARM boards on which openSUSE is running. The boards ware Raspberry Pi,
Cubieboard, and Beaglebone Black. The demonstration attracted their interest because
Raspberry Pi is very popular in Japan these days.
We distributed installation media (DVD-R), Geeko Magazine (flyer) and stickers. Since I
did not have enough time for burning DVDs, I prepared only 19 copies. We will be very
happy if we can get pressed installation media.
= Seminar =
I had a seminar about using Linux OS for desktop. It was a continuation of the seminar at
the last conference in Tokyo.
= Others =
I brought Geeko (yes, our mascot!) to the supporter characters (of OSS-related products)
event and introduced him to the audience. That event was broadcasted on Niconico video, a
live stream service. We got comments from the audience as the following:
- "Cute!"
- "I don't know Geeko has been a mascot for 20 years"
After the event, I was interviewed for the Open Source Channel at our booth. The movie
will be available from Niconico video:

Today the openSUSE Travel Support Team opened the Travel Support
Request Submission tool for requests related to the openSUSE
Conference 2014 in Dubrovnic, Croatia. The goal is to help everybody
in and around openSUSE to be able to come to the openSUSE Conference!
You don't have to be one of the top 10 packagers to apply - if you're
translating, building a local community or helping out at the forums,
we might still be able to offer you support, so apply!
When and how
The application period starts today February 20th and closes on
February 28th. All requests will be managed through our application at
http://connect.opensuse.org/travel-support.
You will need an openSUSE Connect account in order to log in the
application and apply for sponsorship.
A few reminders
- Please, read the Travel Support wiki page
http://en.opensuse.org/openSUSE:Travel_Support_Program carefully
before you apply.
We want everybody to be there! Even if you think you would not qualify
for travel support, just submit a request! If you don't ask we can't
help you!
- The Travel Committee can reimburse up to 80% of travel and lodging
costs. That includes plane ticket, train and bus tickets (no taxi),
even car gas on some occasions, and hotel or hostel costs. Food and
all local expenses are on you!
- The Travel Team won't be able to book or pay anything in advance,
reimbursement comes after the event is over, based on receipts you
keep of your expenses.
- Again: no receipts = no money - it's the rules!
- Those sponsored by the Travel Team have to write a blog or report on
the event and are expected to be available for helping with tasks at
the event where needed!
- Sponsorship decisions are influenced by the openSUSE history of the
requester. Your involvement with openSUSE is really relevant!
- Having an abstract submitted for presentation at the conference is
relevant as well. Note that the CfP ends on February 28th so there is
still time (https://conference.opensuse.org/osem/)!
- If you got support before and complied with all the requirements,
this gets you bonus points too.
- The amount requested must be detailed according to your request,
like the airport you will be departing from, sharing hotel/hostel
rooms, costs associated with your trip.
- Try to get the best fares for tickets and lodging. Remember if
approved at least 20% (and sometimes more) will be paid by you.
Hurry up!
Our goal is to support as many people as possible. If you need support
to make it to the event, PLEASE SEND IN A REQUEST
https://connect.opensuse.org/travel-support/users/sign_in ! We will
attempt to send the approvals before March 5th, 2014 so you can start
booking. Book quickly, as we don't cover anything over the previously
agreed amount so higher prices are on you!
The conference is getting close and the deadline for travel support is
tight so start searching for flights right now! Set up your openSUSE
Connect account and send in a request as soon as possible!
Hope to see you there.
Your Travel Support Team

The 12th annual Southern California Linux Expo (SCALE) is coming up at
the end of February this year.
There are a few of us here in Southern California that have been
plotting, planning and preparing for the openSUSE booth at the event
for months. Currently, it looks like we will have roughly 10 people
working the booth talking to over 2000 attendees.
Though we have been planning for months, there are still some real
tasks that need to be finished or even started before the event. So, a
group of about 5 to maybe 7 of us are going to be getting together
this coming Friday at my apartment in LA for a hackfest.
Among the many things we will be working on are writing up some docs,
working on concept art for the booth banner, and doing clean installs
on our show machines (laptops, desktops, and servers)... not to
mention chowing down on some delicious pizza pies!
We will be taking some pictures of the event and I will be sure to
update the list with what progress we made along with posting whatever
usable pictures we get (I am no good with a camera).

I was just informed that we should update the Ambassador event page.
I've done my part, but would be nice if other Advocates list and update the page too.

Hello folks,
Do we have any update on the openSUSE Advocate welcome pack yet?
Or any other goodies, DVDs that can come handy for Advocates ...

Call for Lectures
In preparation for the upcoming Chemnitzer Linux Days 2014 we call
upon all interested persons to submit their contributions about the
development, promotion and/or application of open source software and
their impact on everyone's privat and business life.
This year we especially encourage speakers which deal with the subject
of confidentiality to submit their contributions. The importance of
confidential data storage and transmission became once again the focus
of public attention because of the recent political events. Despite of
the ongoning improvements in the domain of encryption algorithms and
chipher software the widespread utilisation of these methods by the
average user remains absent. Thus, the Chemnitz Linux Days 2014 shall
not only provide an opportunity for discussions between experts, but
also highlight the importance and utilisaton of cryptographics
software available to the end user. Therefore we welcome submissions
which cover one or more of the following topics:
Basics of cryptography and confidantial communication
Cryptographic software for end users / IT architects
Configuration of encrypted mail, web and WLAN services
Protection against and detection of spyware
Quality and reliability of cryptographic open source software
Reference implementations of cryptographic algorithms in the open
source domain
Analysis of cryptographic services like "DeMail" etc.
