I'd like to do the cleanup of the ambassador list that we discussed in the
summer and also at the openSUSE conference. We'd like to have every ambassador
create a user page so that ambassadors can get contacted. You might have had
one in the old wiki but with the move to the new wiki, you need to create a
new one as described at:
http://news.opensuse.org/2010/07/12/new-wiki-what-now/
I will go after the 1st of December through the list of ambassadors and remove
those that do not have a user page. This way we will remove inactive
ambassadors. If I remove somebody that wants to become active again, it's easy
to add them again once the user page is created.
I will try to email those ambassadors now that do not have a user page (if I
can easily find an email address) with this text as well.
I'm asking every ambassador to subscribe to the opensuse-ambassador mailing
list as well for communication.

Hi
Please welcome our newest ambassador Steban. Here is a bit more about him
in his own words.
* What have you done already for openSUSE?
I have spoken to users of other systems on openSUSE, result? All are
now active users of openSUSE.
* What are your plans for promoting openSUSE? Please tell us what you
want to do the next 6 months.
I am currently building a distro based on openSUSE 11.3, to be applied
to educational robotics. This will be used and distributed in an
educational network in my city for all students, thus facilitating the
study of robotics, programming and project planning. Is currently of
interest in the city, the robotics project with Linux.
All this using SUSE Studio.
* Are you ready to start promoting openSUSE?
I'm already promoting, plus I have a friend in the country of Paraguay
who is interested in representing openSUSE, this after a conversation
we had.
* What do you think is the best kept secret of openSUSE?
no where I saw people who work with joy and organizations like
openSUSE, this I saw in Latinoware 2010.
* Why do you love to do this?
Because this way I'll be helping my people to open their minds, and to
demonstrate that everyone can do what me and you, no matter their
shortcomings, the project I am developing based on openSUSE 11.3 is
for use by everyone! My project is suitable for accessibility for
people with some kind of deficiency.
* How did you start with with Linux/openSUSE? What is your level of
experience?
I am trained in systems engineering, digital electronics technician, I
use linux to 8 years.
I have LPIC 2, actively work with FOSS communities, represent and help
the Fedora Project as ambassador.
Present lectures and seminars on Linux, open source and its
functionality for Professional and business at local events.
Today I work in an educational network that handles 4 cities of
Brazil, where we are planning and developing educational robotics
projects using electronic garbage to create tiny robots.
End.

Greetings,
Here we go:
Software freedom Day
•• Event Date : 16th October, 2010.
•• Event Sponsors : NUI.fr
•• openSUSE Ambassadors : Jimmy Pierre
•• Helpers : Laurence Seigneury, Johnny Castel, Jr.
•• Event Details
o Tell us about the event, What did you do? : Demonstration of installation of openSUSE 11.3, open office, chess & games, yast, ssh, WordPress, repositories, wi-fi etc.
o How many DVDs taken and distributed? : 100 and distributed 52
o How many people were there at the event ? 27 (France was on strike, no petrol, no trains, busses, tramways, flights (http://www.emorywheel.com/detail.php?n=29085 ) even against all odds, we were present as scheduled.
o How did you promote the Event?
•• Facebook : No
•• Twitter : No
•• Others : Usual channels (forums, rss feeds to web sites and our four domain names nui.fr jmll.fr jmll.org, jmll.info , no radio, no newspapers as they had other bones to gnaw)
o Any Interesting Story you will like to share with us? : Yes, two people drove 87 kms to come to see us and I learnt later that they heard about us on the radio for the last event 1.e 18th September and kept track of what we were doing. A young man took a dvd for her grandma Myrtha, aged 81. We had a sort of Jam session (not food related, but IT) with chess players who needed Internet for a party. So openSUSE was there for their party.
o Did you have a booth? : NUI was the only LUG present.
o Who staffed the booth? All of the above.
o Would you go again? Yes, 18th December
o What more can you do to make it better? Swap our 16 or so boxes into laptops because it takes too much time to setup the room. Get hold of goodies.
o Other Comments like Will you blog about the event - and where? Who staffed the booth? Did you have a talk? Which topic? Would you organize again?
We were too eager to go back home.
Software freedom Day

I distributed some dvds of openSUSE and convinced them to play at home ☺ We fighted with smeegol for a lady who wanted to sync her iPhone, this is another story. We had a young man who has a lot of IT problems and he did monopolized some of us to sort his laptop. Thanks God, it was a Dell, so no esoteric material to configure.

We were too busy with social problems to do that.
As you can see, we had a lot of fun.

Hi
Please welcome Marc our newest ambassador. Here is a bit more about him
in his own words
> * What have you done already for openSUSE?
>
I've done a little wiki cleanup, but only when I run across
grammar/translation errors. I'm always vocal about open source and
Linux, and of course when I'm recommending a distro, I naturally suggest
openSUSE! I always keep a LiveCD or DVD handy to give away.
> * What are your plans for promoting openSUSE? Please tell us what you
> want to do the next 6 months.
>
There is no local LUG where I live, so I'd really like to get one
started. Also, I'm making plans to give a single-session presentation on
free and open source software at the public library and give away some
openSUSE install media at the end; that way I can schedule a follow-up
install how-to event if there is interest. I plan to attend the
Mid-America GNU/Linux Networkers Conference in St. Louis, MO
(http://magnetcon.info) and would love to man a table (possibly with
help from a more experienced ambassador?).
> * Are you ready to start promoting openSUSE?
>
I'm ready to be more intentional in my promotion of openSUSE - to move
from one-on-one promotion to a broader approach.
> * What do you think is the best kept secret of openSUSE?
>
Command-line YaST, no question about it. With a great tool like YaST
that runs without X, I have to wonder - why isn't everyone using
openSUSE for minimal machines?
> * Why do you love to do this?
>
I like to learn. I get excited about what I'm learning and I want to
teach others what I'm learning, too.
> * How did you start with with Linux/openSUSE? What is your level of
> experience?
>
>
>
I've been using Linux for ~5 years. I started with Debian at home on a
spare computer and within a month I was using it on my main home
computer and teaching my wife to make the transition. I tried several
distros, like many new Linux users. My first openSUSE was 10.1. I loved
KDE3 and put openSUSE on my work laptop. Within six months I had
converted my church 100% to Linux for office, web development and sound
recording. I've done a little bash scripting for problem solving,
compiled some kernels, rebuilt rpms and general this-and-that, but no
real coding. Linux has meant a lot of learning, but it has been lots of
fun and I look forward to learning a lot more!
