So far I understand, some time ago all artwork was moved to: https://github.com/openSUSE/artwork from https://gitorious.org/opensuse/art but checking activity at gitorius it is obvious that is still used. Heya folks, For oSC 2012 we need some of your creativity... List of things: - We already have a nice website/blog banner (although a few more sizes would be nice) - count down graphic!!! - t-shirt design which works for all 4 confs (LD/Gentoo/oS/S) - a t-shirt variation for the organizing team with something like "how can this Tux help you" or "Ask me about Penguins!" or so (funny = bonuspoints) - design for on a conference bag (also cross-conference pls) - a cool cross-conference logo in b/w and/or 2-3 colors which can go on a conference beer mug. As designer you get a beer mug and a conference team t-shirt, even if you even if you can't make it to the conf. Even if you live in the Himalaya's and I have to fly it to you myself :D (and if money is why you can't make it to oSC, maybe we can do something about that. openSUSE Summit has come and gone, and now it's time to draw the line. Many people has been spoken to, many discussions took place and the end result of all those discussions is the following proposal. [Please Note: the proposal is from ME personally, and is targeted at the artwork team AND the developmental team, as I strongly believe in community involvement] A) It has been discussed on-and-off for some time that openSUSE is in dare need of re-branding, or to be even more precise - of branding, as there currently is practically none. Changing a default wallpaper from one release to another does not constitute a strong, recognizable brand name. As a part of the branding precess (should we agree on one at all) we will attempt to: i) Develop openSUSE specific styling guidelines; iI) Develop openSUSE specific look and feel including - icons, desktop theme, window theme; iii) Restyle the website to follow the guidelines and the desktop theme conventions; iv) [Possibly] redesign the logo itself None of those changes however are going to happen tomorrow, or even in the next release. If any of these does happen it's only upon the grater community consent and involvement. So, consider this to be an [active] proposal, and start the discussion. B) Now to the near future (next release). I would like to propose a few changes to the current artwork and styling process. i) To separate the boot-loader image from the desktop wallpaper and make those into two totally separate efforts ii) The boot-loader (including GRUB, boot-splash, and login) will be styled by the artwork team internally and should be as simple as possible and vector based iii) The wallpaper will be decided upon via contest (just like the last time), but this time around we do it entirely with the collection from Flickr, and demand specific copyright license for each picture submitted This is all for now. 1. I think a complete move away from SVG's would be a total, unadulterated mistake. The *fact* is, we operate in a situation where we need artwork to work in a multitude of environments. We have everything from the 'simple' requirement of 4 aspect ratios (4:3, 5:4, 16:9, 16:10), to the dark and complex requirements of GRUB and our bootloaders where we're often constrained in terms of colour depth and resolution. We currently have the tooling that makes that work well, and I don't think people truly realise how much work would be required if we didn't use svgs at all. Furthermore, our chosen artwork is often used as the base of countless marketing materials, and vector formats make life a lot easier when it comes to pulling apart and 'toying' with a design while still keeping the core feel of the design. Cropping can only go so far, though that is often the only option we have in Raster-land. All of that said, I understand that we now have artists who are raster centric, and I want to ensure there is every opportunity for such contributions to be used. This is why I am currently supporting Eugenes suggestion of a vector GRUB/bootloader (and YaST installer?) design, where the benefits of vector designs are not only welcome but pretty much necessary, but having default wallpapers in Desktops be open to Raster designs. That said, last time we tried that, we ended up with *zero* usable Raster designs, because of either the submitted sources being too low resolution and not in required aspect ratios, or because of licensing issues, which brings me to #2 2. The openSUSE project is responsible for ensuring the correct licensing of all of the materials contained within our distribution. While Flickr is great, and does give a place for an artist to claim what they believe their artwork is licensed under, this has proven insufficient in the past. We have had submissions where the artist claimed the design was covered by an open license, just for us to find out that it contained stock artwork that we, the project, was not licensed for. It won't be the artist, but the entire Project with egg on their face if we end up publishing unlicensed or inappropriately licensed artwork. We will need a vetting/confirmation process beyond that that Flickr provides, and I do fear that in some cases we may need to err on the side of caution if we cannot be sure of a contributors declaration of license. It's sad to say, but we can't always trust an artist at their word, even if not malicious not all artists fully understand the implication of proper licensing, copyright, derivatives, etc. I also dislike the forcing of people to use Flickr, as Flickr only supports Raster formats, and as I state above, I feel we still NEED vectors for some things (Boot stuff), and should still be able to use them in others (Wallpapers). If we are to have a single point of submission, it needs to support the full range of formats we can use in the distribution. Or we need to have multiple ways of submitting proposed designs for 12.3 3. +1, and I intend to help with this 4. +0.5 - I'm not strongly opposed to the idea, but I do think it needs careful consideration and agreement across the project. For example, I'm not sure if GNOME will want to shift away from Cantarell, and in the case of GNOME, we actually need 2-3 default fonts, not just one.. 5. +0.5 - I like the idea, but I personally prefer the idea of having 'dots' that increase in number to show progress and glow to show activity. Progress bars are so boring :) 6. ....there is no 6 7. I think it would be a mistake for KDE to go in this direction. In the past we've had complaints in GNOME that having the login screen looking like the boot screen is bad and confusing. That's one reason I'm supporting the idea of different default wallpaper from the Boot artwork. 8. +0.9 - I agree, as long as their artwork isn't horrible ugly. And it does raise the question, if we're not changing splash screens, should we be changing ANY upstream artwork? [opensuse-artwork] The MOST HORRIBLE THING ever about 12.2

Heya folks, Reading the ever-increasing threads on -project about things-which-don't- make-me-happy made me realize something terrible: amidst the huge discussions about systemd, USB support and release cycles, something crucial got lost. The one thing that allows us to say "we're the FUN distro" when people point out the tiring flamewars: "We've got christmas tuxes in December!" But... with the move to GRUB2, we've lost this crucial advantage over the thundering herd of Beefy Fedora's and root-owning Ubuntu's. What will we do to counteract this? I would hope we can get a Plymouth splash with some Christmassy goodness pushed to 12.2 updates before it is December... Maybe a change of the default wallpaper, too. (as a matter of fact, we should do more of this stuff. I like crazy and it makes people thing we're nuts. So that's good in my book) /Jos

[opensuse-artwork] Artwork Release Schedule - Proposal

Hello again There was also extra discussion at the summit to propose a revised artwork release schedule. The idea mostly is to keep artwork for release ahead of the distribution release itself. This will allow plenty of time for the team to tweak, improve, brand, etc. It will additionally allow the team for time to have the marketing team make requests for artwork based on the release artwork. We recognize that marketing is an important dependent of our team's efforts and in recent releases, our work with them has been slow. Especially when they are trying to come up with new ways and places where we can promote the new release. This means that their requests come generally with a short time frame so we need to be able to address their requests. This "rushed" artwork release schedule will also allow our factory team to better implement new branding or UI changes made. Here is a rough idea of what the release steps should be. They lack a time frame, so I am asking our team to propose a time frame. For example, step 1 takes 4 weeks, step two takes 2 weeks, etc. 1 Decide core artwork -Choose wallpaper (From contest) -Decide Icons and pointer (If applicable) 2 Decide core artwork graphics format, svg, pixmap (this is mostly dictated by the output system, we don't have much saying in this) 3 Resize core artwork to fit 4:3, 16:9, 16:10, 5:3 and any other aspect ratios using this time around 5 Make KDM login branding based on core artwork, or replace both with LightDM (when ready) 6 Artwork refinement. Once artwork is decided, take time to refine (extra work with Inkscape or GIMP) 7 Packaging, core artwork, KDM, splash screens, boot screen (note that packaging svg currently seems easier because there is a script that does it. We could also create a script to resize pixmap images in case we decide on an image like this) 8 Test, tweak, tune, refine. Especially the boot splash which requires more work (Plymouth now) PS: Feel free to add or take away steps to these list. Surely there is something we have overlooked and can be part of this release steps proposal. Please collaborate on this one because it will guide our team's efforts for a long time. I think there even was agreement that that should happen but nothing got done. Maybe start there?!? Still, a fully new logo, I wouldn't mind. It's not easy however and the geeko has big branding value. In any case, you've got my support on these - the issue will be 'who does the work' more than anything else if you ask me.
