I built my system with a new power supply. An Antec Sonota with a True Blue 380W power supply. So that couldn't be the cause of my problems, could it? I'll check the BIOS update when I get home. Kernel builds have been fine, currently running 2.6.9-rc2-mm1 and -bk kernels before that. Some motherboards are fussy about memory, a good idea would be to test out using 9,1 x86 and if the problem is still there, then look at the hardware as a possible source of trouble. Hi All Suzy Linux Users, I have SuSE Linux running on a w1100z after a very easy install. I only have SuSE running, so I don't have any experience with partitions. But I wanted to inform the interested the community that SuSE9.1 installs easily on the w1100z. I am using the 64 bit version, of course. After a couple weeks of heavy use, there appear to be no issues associated with the switch to 64 bits with the possibile exception of a couple of terminal settings that only caused problems when using PAM authentication over SSH. SSH is fine otherwise! PAM never works anyhow. To fix this very small problem, I compliled a seconary SSH client on a purely 32 bit linux machine and copied it to my 64 bit machine. As the OS was designed to run 32 bit applications, it ran without a hitch. Applications are running very fast, but the boot time is slow. I have found that boot times with the best hardware is generally slow (RS6000 take > 5 minutes to boot.) Anyhow, if anybody has any problems with the w1100z and SuSE you can try and email me and maybe I can help you. The one last thing that was an issue: I had a difficult time starting the w1100z after plugging it in! The work around was to wake the machine up by manually ejecting the dvd/cd-rom disk tray with a paper clip. DO THIS ONLY IF YOU HAVE FOLLOWED ALL OF THE INSTRUCTIONS FOR PROPER START UP FIRST. AND IF YOU DO THIS, MAKE SURE THAT YOU ARE INSERTING THE PAPERCLIP IN THE CORRECT APERTURE FOR MANUAL CD-ROM TRAY EJECTIONS. After the latest upgrade yesterday, Acrobat reader crashes. Athlon not running at full speed?

Dear Sirs, I saw that my Athlon-64 3400+ is running at 800 MHz all the time (at least the Info-Center is telling me this)... Do I have to switch off apci or how do I set it to full speed? It should be at least 2.2 GHz, or am I wrong? Thank you, Gery

Hi Gerhard, I had a bit of a dig about and it looks like YOU will only give me 1.0-5332 (I tried YOU "update" a few times for the driver) I've just downloaded NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-1.0-6111-pkg2.run from nvidia's site but before I try manually installing this, is there a way of forcing Yast to use 6111? Nvidia on Shuttle SN85G4V2, X hangs every other cold boot

Hi Everyone, I'm having problems with the 64bit Nvidia driver, Its nearly working but every other time I switch on the system X hangs with a black screen and I cant Kill X or get in over SSH to see whats going on. If I then Power off the system, there is some brief hard disk activity and the next time I boot, X starts up and runs perfectly. I'm sure this must be a simple fix, I'm guessing there is a failsafe parameter that is used following a poweroff without clean shut down. Either that or resource allocation is different following a poweroff without clean shut down. I've tried looking at the XFree86.log files and dmesg but cant see any clues. Has anyone seen this before? or can anyone tell me where I should be looking. The system is: Suse 9.1 for AMD_64 Shuttle SN85G4V2 with nvidia Nforce 3 chipset AMD 64 3000+ Nvidia FX5200 (by XFX) Maxtor 120Gb SATA Hope you can help. Ed

Problems with alsasound (SB Live Value and Audigy 2 NX usb)

Hello there, a few weeks ago I bought a qbic 3801 barebone for AMD 64. I knew that the onboard sound chip, a CMedia 8768 won't work and the NIC will be supported with an 2.6.8 Kernel. So I bought a usb sound card which I also can use with my Notebook. I took the Creative Audigy 2 NX usb which works by other Linux users (not completely but iot works). After installing the 64 Bit SuSE and disabling the onboard sound chip in the BIOS I couldn't install the Audigy sound card. It is detected by the usb port and I can see it in the SuSE plugger, but alsaconf and yast2 don't find any sound card. I tried to use the generic usb sound driver from alsa, but it fails. After installing the newest kernel of the day (2.6.8-20040909144556-default), my NIC works great (It's a force depth nvidia driver), but my soundcard still is quiet. After many tries I decided to use an old SB Live value from a friend, but this pci card also keeps quiet. Yast2 tells me: "Das Kernelmodul snd-emu10k1 konnte nicht geladen werden. Ein möglicher Grund dafür können falsche Modulparameter sein, sowie ungültige IO - oder IRQ - Parameter". Seems to be a failure in the module, but I don't know what to do now. Is there anybody ou there who could help me? OpenPBS issue

Hi, a rather nasty issue troubles me on our linux opteron cluster. qdel (taken from SuSE9.1 x86-64 OpenPBS packages) needs to be invoked at least two times. If a job exceeds a queue limit, it is killed partially; i.e. the tasks are terminated via the epilogue-script (via the invocation of mpiclean), but the job remains in the queue with state running! Thus, the nodes are blocked. An additional qdel removes the job from the queue. The same happens when the job finishes within the queue limits. If a job needs to be terminated manually, a first qdel kills the tasks and a second invocation clears the queue. In search for a trivial workaround, I created a script called qdel which calls the original qdel twice, which works fine for a manual removal of running jobs. Alas, this does not work when a job exceeds existing limits of the queue or finishes orderly. Any help is greatly appreciated. Best wishes, Torsten

I went to install some games I had on my old box, railroad tycoon and SOF to be precise (Civilization was next). In both cases I got the following error message. SUSE Enterprise 9 AMD 64 install on Penguin Atlus 1000 server issue

Has any of you guys tried to install SUSE Enterprise 9 AMD 64 on one of the penguin Atlus 1000 server ? It is a Dual Opteron box with 1 G of RAM. I can't seem to get the install kernel to boot properly, it states some machine Check exceptions around the line CPU 0 IO APIC and stops. I've tried various options such as noacpi, acpi=oldboot, nodma, nothing seem to help. I can boot from the 32-bit 2.6.X kernels just fine, it is just the 64bit 2.6.X that's giving me a problem.

Hi, I'm trying to install mldonkey 2.5.21 or 2.5.22 from the sources on my Athlon64 running SuSE Linux 9.1 (x86_64). For both versions "./configure" and "make" run without problems. In both cases "make install" brings up this: # make install no -inline 10 -I src/utils/cdk -I src/daemon/chat -I src/utils/lib -I src/utils/net -I tools -I src/daemon/common -I src/daemon/driver -I src/utils/mp3tagui -I src/config/unix -I src/networks/gnutella -I src/networks/gnutella2 -I src/networks/fasttrack -I src/networks/fileTP -I src/networks/bittorrent -I src/networks/donkey -c src/utils/lib/date.ml make: no: Command not found make: *** [src/utils/lib/date.cmx] Error 127 To me that looks like a linewrap somewhere. The bizarre thing is that I can compile and install these packages on SuSE 9.1 for i586 without running into this problem. Did anyone have a similar experience with trying to get mldonkey running on SuSE for AMD64? Or better: is anyone able to help with that? Cheers, Raimund

All these kernels addressed the serial ATA disk as hda and delivered a very poor performance of only 3-5 MB/sec (hdparm -t). Now I'm using the latest KOTD which addresses the same disk (ATA SAMSUNG SP1614C) as sda (no barrier parameter is needed) and it delivers a performance of 55-150 MB/sec. SuSE 9.1 Pro + SSH + Hostbased Authentication

I'm running into a problem on SuSE 9.1 Professional for AMD64 where hostbased authentication doesn't seem to be working properly... In /etc/ssh/sshd_config and /etc/ssh/ssh_config I have it turned on: HostbasedAuthentication yes I've also turned on: PermitRootLogin yes In /etc/ssh/shosts.equiv I have the proper entry: master 10.1.1.128 But when I try to log in, it asks for the password. Does anyone have any ideas? I've even tryed chmod'ing /usr/lib64/ssh/ssh-keysign to be suid root (4755) without success... MythTV and PVR350

Does anyone have MythTV working with PVR350? There are a number of rpms at:- http://www.astro.uio.no/~oeysteio/apt/suse/9.1-i586/RPMS.olsen/ but it's not clear which are needed. When I try to install the mythtv rpm yast2 says it needs lame which is not available, though I have glame. problems with x nvidia fx5200

After the installation of Suse 9.1 on a amd 64 pc with nvidia fx5200 card i have no graphics. I always get the same message apm_bios not present and (EE) Nod devices detected no screens found I have made the online update to use the nvidia driver but i had no success. Any help ? Thanx

konqueror filemanager problem

Hi out there! This might be a non-amd64 specific problem, but while having it on my amd64 machine and only being subscribed here ... I'll just try to get an answer here. :o) I use konqueror as filemanager most of the time when browsing my filesystem, but yesterday I encountered a problem never seen before and until now not being able to solve it: I can't change the size of the left hand treeview or the right hand directory content freely any more (I am sure some hours before it worked), it is fixed. This is a bit disturbing, because I can't see deeper directory structures in their whole width. I searched several kde and konqueror config files, tried changing some stuff in there, but no success: the columns remain fixed. Remark: this only happened with my own account (which is in fact the only one regulary running in X). Another existing one with previously used KDE and konqueror behaves as usual, and also a newly 'created' KDE setting with the first use of KDE of another existing account doesn't show these fixed columns. Any hints, suggestions and so on are much appreciated, I hate such senseless restrictions ... suse amd 64 and mathematica

Hello, I just installed suse 9.1 for amd-64. Then installed mathematica 5.0 for linux (standard 32 bit linux) but, wen I try to run it, I get the error mathematica cannot determine operating system. and no mathematica... Now, I gess that this is just an environmet problem, since everyboy says that 32 bit intel instructions are understood by the AMD processor. Is there any way one can trick mathematica into believing that it is running in an arbitrary operating system (standard, 32 bit Linux) or any other way to solve this problem?
