/usr/lib is 32-bit libraries. /usr/lib64 is 64-bit libraries. My hardware, various bugs seen so far

Hi all, I've kept a log book to document my installation, and have seen about 10 bugs so far, as well as some other annoyances. I can supply more detail for these bugs if anyone is interested. I alos have a list of more minor quibbles. The MD5 sum mismatch is probably the biggest issue. From what I have seen on the Web, this is probably related to an interaction between ReiserFS and the MB cache on my Seagate drive, rather than a hardware problem. Best regards Bugs in SUSE LINUX 9.0 Professional AMD64: Installation bugs ============ 1. Formatting /dev/hda1 (on 160GB Seagate disk) as /windows/C mkdosfs goes to 90+ % CPU and makes no progress dosfsck also goes to 90+ % CPU and makes no progress. Current SuSE version is dosfstools 2.9-43 Worked around by not formatting this partition 2. Installing GRUB after expert partitioning Error 15 file not found install --stage2=/boot/grub/stage2 /grub/stage1 ... Current SuSE version is grub 0.93-201 Worked around by manually editing /etc/grub.conf install /grub/stage1 ... and manually installing MBR via typing in GRUB commands. 3. Monitor flickering in framebuffer mode Worked around by changing monitor setting from 1280 x 1024 @ 75Hz to 1280 x 1024 @ 60Hz Current SuSE version is k_deflt 2.4.21 -193 4. Installation of various packages from both DVD and Internet failed: MD5 sum mismatch Worked around by retrying. 5. Installation of package pysol caused X to freeze. SUSE AMD 64bit installation failes on Shuttle X

Hello, I experienced problems installing a SUSE 9.0 AMD64bit edition on an Shuttle X system (http://de.shuttle.com/sn85g4.htm#oben). A may send a hardware index collected with aida32 under windows 32bit. It´s not included since a messages larger than 20000 bytes is not accepted. Latest bios is already running.System hangs on state "starting hardware detection". No other CD boot option works, even not acpi=off or manual installation, since all of them use hardware detection. A SUSE 9.0 non AMD64bit faces the same problem. Refering to http://de.shuttle.com/linux.htm, a boot problem is known in connection with RedHat, but also says a SUSE 64bit edition does not share this problem. The solutions provided under http://portal.suse.com/sdb/en/2003/11/90_amd64.html did not help at all. On the same machine a Knoppix 3.3 or Windows XP is doing fine. Help is appreciated. Installing SuSE 9 from SuSE 9

Greetings - I just unpacked a dual opteron storage server with a 3ware 7000-series RAID controller and two sets of three SATA drives. SuSE 9 is installed on /dev/sda2, a 500GB file system. The technicians at Monarch computers adviced me to install the OS on a different drive. (One problem they had is that 3ware hasn't released a controller card driver for SuSE 9 yet.) I've added an IDE drive for this purpose, to free up the RAID 5 drives for storage. I'm new to this and have two questions. First, will I get a big performance hit on the OS by moving it from the SATA RAID drives to a single IDE drive? There is 2GB RAM. Second, can I install SuSE 9 from loop-mounted DVD disk images, or in some other way directly from hard drives within the existing installation? I don't have a floppy or CD/DVD drive on this unit, though I could plug one in for this purpose. Cheers, David P.S. Minor issues in case someone has a quick answer: How can I boot directly into a text console and not into SuSE's graphics console (I set it to boot to run level 3)? How can I increase the font size at boot? Finally, the kernel isn't supporting my flat screen display -- the text is squashed and unreadable. An old CRT works. (VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc Rage XL (rev 27))

Mike & et.al., I wish the toy was mine. The RAM all came at one time from the same vendor and is matched. I have tried moving them around to different slots with no change. :) It is sad to have such a nice toy not living up to its potential. The historical story is: We bought the RAM, MB, and Processors from the same vendor. Lodaed up SUSE and let the machine run. It ran without problem for about 2 weeks with all 6GB of RAM. Then the UPS it was plugged into failed and the machine went down. The board would never boot again with more than 4GB. The board a couple days later died completely. We RMAed that board and had to order another (since it took them 2 and a half months to get us the replacement board). The board we orderded (same model) is the one in the machine now. The RAM is the original RAM, as are the processors. i have downloaded the boot.iso. When i bootup i get and kernelpanic: VFS unable to mount root fs. mainboard is soltek sl-k8av2-r / k8av2-rl netcart via pci Do i need to download more than boot.iso? I have tried a boot option linux install=ftp://ftp.heanet.ie/mirrors/ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/ftp.suse.com/suse… but then it says can not find initrd=initrd Do you have a hint? SuSE 9.0 and kernel 2.4.24 gives panic on boot

Hi, I successfully compiled the 2.4.24 kernel downloaded from kernel.org on my SuSE 9.0 AMD64 system without applying any patches to it (I'm assuming that's ok since there are no patches for 2.4.24 in ftp.x86-64.org)... However, when I boot, the kernel panics because it can't mount the root fs... It appears as though there's a problem with the reiserfs module not recognizing my rootfs... Here's a hand-copied snippet of the last few lines of output before the kernel panic: VFS: mounted root (ext2 filesystem) reiserfs: found format "3.6" with standard journal reiserfs: checking transaction log (device sd(8,7)) ... for (sd(8,7)) is_tree_node: node level 0 does not match to the expected one 4 sd(8,7):vs-5150: search_by_key: invalid format found in block 606328. Multi-boot - WinXP 32, WinXP64, SuSE 9.0 64?

I'm looking for advice on setting up a multi-boot system .. MS WinXP 32bit, MS WinXP 64bit, and SuSE 9.0 64bit. I know if I create two partitions, first installing WinXP 32bit and on the second partition installing WinXP 64bit, I should get the boot option of which version of WinXP I want to load. How should I install SuSE 9.0 64bit in this configuration? If I install SuSE third, will GRUB see the 32bit and 64bit versions of WinXP and allow me to choose between them (or SuSE)? I have another Linux/x86 system (2.4.18) that is mounting directories read/write. First of all, 32-bit stuff is not EMULATED on an Athlon64. If you install a 32-bit kenrel on your Athlon64, you're just running a full 32-bit system at full speed --- no emulation involved. Anyway, why 32-bits on an Athlon64? Because you're installing it in a professional environment that doesn't really need 64 bits but would get on your case regarding bugs. For example, I've found that the following programs either don't work, are less stable, or crash when running 64-bit versions: Evolution, Mozilla, Gimp. To get around this, you have to run a mixed 32-bit 64-bit system. It works, but it's added complication. Also, software source codes distributed before the AMD64 came around is not AMD64-aware. So when you try to install them, they say you have an unsupported architecture. Then you have to fiddle with the configure scripts to get them to install properly. And then there are drivers: nVidia is the ONLY vendor providing 64-bit video drivers --- and that was only as of a few weeks ago. So why not just buy a 32-bit P-4 or something? Because the Athlon64 is a great architecture with decent price/performance ratio even running in 32-bit mode. And I expect that 64-bit operation will be up to snuff within a year. And yes, cryptography benchmarks (large integer computation) run about 6x faster on an A64 (in 64-bit mode) than on a similarly fast P-4 --- and about 2.5x faster than a Mac G5. i have downloaded the boot.iso. When i bootup i get and kernelpanic: VFS unable to mount root fs. mainboard is soltek sl-k8av2-r / k8av2-rl netcart via pci Do i need to download more than boot.iso? I have tried a boot option linux install=ftp://ftp.heanet.ie/mirrors/ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/ftp.suse.com/suse… but then it says can not find initrd=initrd Do you have a hint? Regards Claus

I'm glad to announce that we have made a bootable CD with a new kernel that supports various SATA drivers. This should help everybody with an AMD64 system with SATA harddisks to install the 9.0/AMD64 DVD on such a system. We have done some tests on those systems that we have access and are finally happy with the results since all these systems are supported;-). The kernel contains some extra patches which were not in the I'll make also an optional kernel update via YOU available the next days for those that are interested in just the kernel. Download from a mirror of ftp.suse.com. The ISO is /pub/suse/x86_64/supplementary/9.0-PatchCD/9.0-PatchCD.iso The kernel RPMs are in a subdirectory on the server if you're just interested in those. If you encounter problems, please discuss it on this mailing list. Andreas P.S. Here're the release notes: This PatchCD contains the current 2.4.21 kernel with all security updates and especially updates to support SATA controllers. If you like to install on a new system with SATA harddisks, burn the ISO image on a CD and boot from it. The CD will ask for the 9.0/AMD64 DVD and continue with the installation with an updated kernel. For existing systems which do not require SATA use should use YOU to get the latest kernel instead if you require these bug fixes and enhancements. The kernel update contains: - support for VIA SATA controller - support for Promise SATA controllers 2037x, 20319, 20621 - support for Silicon Image (SIL) SATA controllers 3112 and 3114 - better support for Tyan S2885 AGP - the 32-bit Borland Kylix IDE and programs should work now Note that we do not have access to all those systems and do not guarantee that it works. Those that we have, have been tested briefly with success. Just a note about SATA disks: The 2.4 kernel names disks as /dev/hdx, the 2.6 kernel might name them /dev/sdx, so in case you update your system, be careful. DRI and mixed 32/64 environments

Hello, I was wondering if people could assist me in understanding some of the issues with running both 32 and 64 bit compiled applications on a DRI 3D system. My assumption is that a 32 bit compiled application will load the 32-bit OpenGL library, and likewise the 64 bit compiled application will load the 64 bit OpenGL application. My understanding is that the same DRI client driver will be attempted to be loaded for hardware accelleration. Obviously this may cause some issues for a 'mixed mode' AMD64 system. Has anyone worked through this problem previously and has some suggestions on what does or doesn't happen? Regards, Matthew

Installation of Suse 9 for AMD64

Hy, I'am back to report my experiences by installing Suse 9 AMD64 on my K8V deluxe with two 1614c drives system ... OK, Last Status in the List is that I finally reached YAST but the System told me, that there were no disks found. So I canceled the job. The process took me to a DOS-typed blue Interface called "Linux rc" or "rcLinux" or someting like that. I tried the driver section to manually install a SATA Driver and "surprising" there was a VIA SATA driver chooseable. After that I started again Installation and YAST found the two SATA drives. I agreed with the default proposal that YAST gave me to go on installing. After pressing "next" I got the message that the process can't go on unless some changes have been done. I have no imagination which changes I shall do, so I also tried some manual modifications as described in the user manual supplied in my AMD64 DVD parcel, including formating etc. But no way, always this same message "process can't go on unless some changes have been done" (-> this is a translation, I used german install language) Any Ideas ? As I've got to 160GB drives, I formerly intended to boot with XP from the first drive or optional from the second drive with Linux. So I don't care to format the second drive in any way it will be "comfortable" for my little Linux 9 ... ;-) Any comments will be apprechiated ... I want to get this OS finitely running ... Serial-ATA under amd64 suse

Hello, I've just found out the hard way that Suse doesn't support serial ATA drives under 9.2 for the AMD64 version. I got Suse because Mandrake doesn't have any support at all and the PPP via modem doesn't work under Mandrakes AMD64 version. It does support serial ATA though. Does anyone know how I could patch Suse to see a serial ATA drive, and load over Mandrake? I don't mind repartitioning and formatting - I'm dealing with a new system. I asked support what it would cost to create a patch, and they want to know the details of the what chip set is on the disk drive. Since the bios can see the disk, this shouldn't matter - it's just calls to bios for track and sector reads. Thanks for any suggestions. Mike Rosing

Sometime after that, I read that a kernel update had made the Via SATA controller active - I have not bothered to try it since the 3ware card is working fine. As a humorous aside - when my v9.0-64 came in the mail. I wondered where the other CDs were (there was only one in the box). My CD drive wouldn't read it & I was frustrated until I inspected the "CD" and read "DVD-1". Well, a mad rush up to Fry's before they closed netted me a DVD-ROM and, eventually, a working system. Sheesh - I vaguely remembered that fact from when I ordered the product but completely forgot it when it arrived. So, actually, I'm good except for the sound... 8^( ......Chuck
