My hardware, various bugs seen so far
Hi all, I've kept a log book to document my installation, and have seen about 10 bugs so far, as well as some other annoyances. I can supply more detail for these bugs if anyone is interested. I alos have a list of more minor quibbles. The MD5 sum mismatch is probably the biggest issue. From what I have seen on the Web, this is probably related to an interaction between ReiserFS and the MB cache on my Seagate drive, rather than a hardware problem. Best regards Bugs in SUSE LINUX 9.0 Professional AMD64: Installation bugs ============ 1. Formatting /dev/hda1 (on 160GB Seagate disk) as /windows/C mkdosfs goes to 90+ % CPU and makes no progress dosfsck also goes to 90+ % CPU and makes no progress. Thanks. I filed a bug about this.
2. Installing GRUB after expert partitioning Error 15 file not found install --stage2=/boot/grub/stage2 /grub/stage1 ...
Current SuSE version is grub 0.93-201
Worked around by manually editing /etc/grub.conf install /grub/stage1 ... and manually installing MBR via typing in GRUB commands.
I do this all the time and never saw this problem.
8. KDE log out did not log out
kdebase3-kdm 3.1.4-42
Worked around by CTRL-ALT-BACKSPACE.
Works fine for me.
9. Clicking on folder in Konqueror navigation panel Konqueror crashed.
Current SuSE version is kdeaddons3-konqueror 3.1.4-38
10. At various times: Kernel: Oops 0002 Kernel: Oops 0011 Kernel: Oops 0000
That's probably the main problem that causes other problems for you. Can you post the full oops logs from dmesg or /var/log/messages ? -Andi

First crash is in the PowerNow driver. Could be related to a buggy BIOS. Just disable that with chkconfig cpufreqd off -Andi

OK. I just ran "chkconfig cpufreqd off" Let's see what happens. I've also taken a look at the BIOS updates at http://www.giga-byte.com/Motherboard/Support/BIOS/BIOS_GA-K8NNXP.htm and plan to update the BIOS. This will take a while, since I don't have DOS or Windows on my machine, and I will need to use another PC to prepare the BIOS diskette. Best regards

Andreas, Thanks. I used a Windows PC at UNSW to prepare a diskette with the latest F12 BIOS, and updated my BIOS last night. We'll see how it goes. Best regards

This sounds familiar. My system had the same problem until I slowed memory access down. Have you tried to test your memory with memtest+ ( http://www.memtest.org/ ) ??? Regards, Jac -- Jac Kersing Technical Consultant The-Box Development j.kersing@the-box.com http://www.the-box.com

Jac, Thanks. I installed memtest86 from http://blizzard.vqbn.com/suse.de/suse/i386/9.0/suse/i586/ memtest86-3.0-340.i586.rpm and ran this for 15 hours with zero errors. At the end of this time, the memtest86 screen read: 41 passes 0 errors MemMap e820-Std 92K-1024M RsvdMem 84K Cached 1024M This is the bug that worries me the most, especially since it is probably corrupting data on my disks and since SuSE does not yet recognize it as a bug.
