Hi! We did some analysis on how much space is wasted by packages storing the same file twice (or more). While few packages waste megabytes (only 88 waste more than 1000Mib), 657 waste more than 20K - which sums up to 703MiB in total. Impressed? Consider using fdupes in your package. It's pretty simple: BuildRequire fdupes and then use "%fdupes $RPM_BUILD_ROOT" in your install section. This will check for duplicated files and make them hardlink. Just be careful that these duplicated files do not end up in different subpackages - I haven't tried what rpm does in that case. But you can also use %fdupes -s, which will create symlinks, which are easier to grasp for rpm :) So you can also combine this like this # create symlinks for my man pages %fdupes -s $RPM_BUILD_ROOT%_mandir # create hardline for the rest %fdupes $RPM_BUILD_ROOT I also added an rpmlint check that will give an error for the package if it's wasting more than 20KB (which is basically a random number). [opensuse-packaging] XTerm uses original escape sequences now

Hi, due to a change for bugzilla #262330 I've changes the application defaults for XTerm to use both altIsNotMeta and altSendsEscape with `true' and removed the former simple mapping with ESC also known as Meta in front of the next key: Alt Cursor-Left from `ESC ESC O D' (application mode) Alt Cursor-Left from `ESC ESC [ D' (command line mode) to ESC [ 1 ; 3 D (both application and command line mode) which is the original key binding of the current xterm. Please note that /etc/inputrc and /etc/profile.d/bindings.tcsh are changed accordingly. Most applications using (n)curses will switch into application mode (which is both enabling Application Keypad and Application Cursor Keys) will automatically use the correct terminfo entries for that. Other applications not using ncurses should be aware of the changes and be changed accordingly. For the mappings please refer to the snooper.tar.bz2 within the xterm sources of factory. Therein I've listed the mappings for xterm, urxvt, kterm, mlterm, konsole, and gnome-terminal done with the snooper utility. Remark: the change was necessary fort using the Meta functionality of the XTerm which is simply disabling using ESCape before any key or sending alternated escape sequences but setting the high bit of the typed character. This is useful for various umlauts. See the Ctrl-Button1 menu in XTerm by pressing Ctrl-Mouse1, try out enabling or disabling `Alt Sends Escape' and then type e.g. Alt-A. [opensuse-packaging] Split licenses.rpm (based on 'Building packages with linking a license from licenses.rpm')

Moin, After our discussion with JSrain we decided to write to packages with just another issue about licenses.rpm. The current RPM content size (unpacked) is quite big du -sh /usr/share/doc/licenses/ -> 3.9 MB This package-size is a bit disputable when talking about saving-space ;) Actually it is because the package contains some very-rare licenses or some obscure licenses used just for one package in our distribution. The proposal is simple: - Find out, which packages in a minimal installation use which licenses and create licenses-base.rpm (for example) that would contain only those important/used licenses. - The rest could stay in licenses.rpm. We'd save space for the minimal-installation and we'd still have all licenses for 'the other cases'. BTW: I have to admit, that splitting-it up was a jsrain's idea :) ;) What do you think of that? Hello. I don´t know who and how creates packages for example in http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/filesystems/ And i don´t have any experience with creating of packages, so i´d like to ask for favour, whether someone would be able to created a package ntfs-config (from http://flomertens.free.fr/ntfs-config/ ).Of course, if it is possible. I think it is very good and simple tool for ntfs-3g driver. I know that you are going to plane integrate r/w support in openSUSE 10.3, but this could be for older 10.1, 10.2... Thanks. (Alpha 7) ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ I scanned all packages and here the files that still contains a reference to getcfg* (mostly getcfg-interface): /etc/init.d/dhcrelay /etc/init.d/dhcpd /etc/init.d/ntop /etc/preload.d/later /etc/xen/scripts/xen-network-common.sh /lib/mkinitrd/scripts/setup-network.sh /sbin/SuSEfirewall2 /usr/lib/openwbem/c++providers/libomc_ip_interface_profile.so.1.0.0 /usr/share/doc/packages/ifplugd/ifplugd.init /usr/share/doc/packages/powersave/contrib/acpi_hotkeys_Samsung_P35 /usr/share/doc/packages/yast2/network/autodocs/NetworkDevices.html These are mostly occurences of getcfg-interface, which was used to translate hardware descriptions into interface names. You may just drop that: H=get_interface_hardware_descriptor I=getcfg-interface H use I has to replaced by I=get_interface_hardware_descriptor use I All configuration files that contain hardware descriptions have to be converted. For this purpose there is /etc/sysconfig/network/scripts/hwdesc2iface For a sysconfig style config file you may call hwdesc2iface <file> <variable_start> It converts all variables that start with variable_start. If a variable contains multiple values all will be converted. Example11: ifcfg-bond0 ... BONDING_SLAVE_1=eth-id-... BONDING_SLAVE_2=pci-bus-... ... Just call hwdesc2iface ifcfg-bond0 BONDING_SLAVE This will convert both variables to BONDING_SLAVE_1=ethX BONDING_SLAVE_2=ethY Example2: ifcfg-br0 ... BRIDGE_PORTS="eth-id-... bus-pci-..." ... Give the sysfs devpath as argument hwup /sys/devices/pci0000\:00/... - take down a device (hwdown) also with interface names as argument try 'hwdown eth0': it unbinds the device from the driver and so the interface will be unregistered. - hwup accepts interface names as argument, if the device was taken down with hwup before. In the example above 'hwup eth0' brings your interface back. - accepts the old hwup hardware descriptions. It is a trivial script that uses /sys/bus/*/drivers/*/{un,}bind, /sys/bus/*/devices/*/uevent and /sys/bus/*/drivers_probe. Have a look at it if you want to learn what sysfs can do for you. [sorry for the cross-post, but this could be of interest for both packagers as well as factory users/testers] Hi, in case you see warnings like this: WARNING: the --skip-unsupported option is no longer available then either fix your package to no longer care about unsupported modules (remove the --skip-unsupported option) or make a bugreport if it's not in your package. Ex: https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=293758 Background: the handling of unsupported modules was changed in 10.3, it's now globally configured in /etc/modprobe.d/unsupported.blacklist, it's no longer the responsibility of the callers of modprobe. For compatibility with not yet updated scripts, the option is still recongnized, but it prints the above warning. [opensuse-packaging] Building packages with linking a license from licenses.rpm

Hi, I've found that we have a 'licenses' package that contains all known/used licenses. The intention seems to be to save some space by not including own copy of license in each package but linking it (and to clean the system up a bit). It seems to be quite good idea but I haven't found any documentation, howto, wiki page that would describe how to modify my packages to use it. Could someone, please point me (us) to some documentation, howto?
