linuxrc - netdevice=<hwaddress>

Does anyone know if any of the SLES releases 9 or 10 support passing the linuxrc option netdevice=<hardware mac address> ? I noticed Red Hat has had this for sometime and it seems totally missing in SuSE which seems really odd. I'm still scratching my head if we really are still passing only by kernel interface name. I read in the change log for linuxrc-1.8.6-3 a change that "sounds" like this feature. * Mon Mar 14 2005 - snwint(a)suse.de - s390: fix segfault in net_list_s390_devs() - extra root image was sometimes not used - allow netdevices to be specified by hwaddress But it looks like linuxrc-1.8.6-3 is only available in SuSE Professional 9.3. "any" commentary would be sincerely appreciated the feature also seems to be fairly minor since any delimiter seperating the octets in the hwaddr string could be used to identify the difference between an interface name and interface hw address if i could figure out a generic method of overriding the linuxrc with a custom script and daisy chain it back into linuxrc after setting up the interface name, I would.. and have a slight idea on how to do that.. but i'd rather find out i'm just missing something and the feature is already there Thanks!

[opensuse-autoinstall] autoyast with openSUSE 10.3 doesn't work

Dear listmembers, I'm getting crazy trying to install openSUSE 10.3 from a created autoinst.xml profile file. I tried to tell autoyast to get the profile from usb-stickt, nfs-share and a webserver - no chance! I always get a message like that there was an error reading the profile. I only got it half way working using the option "vnc=1" . Than autoyast reads the profile (from the webserver), but stops with partitioning problems because of a factory partiton. I saw now thht this is a bug... But getting back to my first problem: What can I do? We want to set up some new clients with openSUSE 10.3 and I don't want to do that 50 times ... [opensuse-autoinstall] Error in autoyast install process

Hello, I am attempting to perform an autoinstall process with SuSE 10.1 sp1 using autoyast and a custom autoinst.xml file. The install process reads the autoinst.xml correctly, and performs all steps up until the Install boot manager process. Here, I receive the error /sbin/mkinitrd: line 3297: /etc/fstab: No such file or directory No '/' mountpoint spceified in /etc/fstab It should also be noted that my autoinst.xml file fails RNG validation (https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=211014#c21) I have attached my autoinst.xml file also. Might these two problems be related? --W. Smith

I dont have kinternet installed. [opensuse-autoinstall] mountby option ignored

Hi, we are using <mountby config:type="symbol">device</mountby> for every partitionin our profiles. After installing a bunch of hosts it turned out that this option is ignored on many hosts. We couldn't find a rule for it. It happened with creating and with reusing disks, on hosts with lvm and without, etc. Uwe, can I send one y2log from a host where the option was ignored? [opensuse-autoinstall] Proliant and Autoyast Issue

Hi List, it's me again. I'm searching 2 days for my failure and found following issues, where I need your Help. I have a xml File for my HP Server ( look @ attached hp.xml) and a file rules.xml (attached). If I start the hp.xml nativly on grub boot line, everything working fine. I have the need to install both SLED and SLES depending on what the hardware platform is. I have implemented some rules, would that be the best way to install different SuSE versions or would classes be better? Has anyone done this before. [opensuse-autoinstall] Kernel Panic during tftp phase of install

Hello, I am trying to do a fully automated install of SLED-10.1 x86_64. The server machine is able to recognize the mac address of the client and begin the install process, however, shortly after I receive the following error: VFS: cannot open root device "<NULL>" or unknown-block (8,9) Please append a correct "root=" boot option Kernel Panic - not syncing This set has worked previously, the only variables that have changed are the client and server hardware. All hardware is 64bit. I have been searching around and it looks like this is related to a missing initrd, but my initrd file is present where it should be in /tftp. Please let me know if more information would be helpful. [opensuse-autoinstall] HP Proliant Server / autoyast.xml Partitioning

Hi List, I'm new to the autoyast modul of the SLES 10 and OpenSuSE. I have installed a HP DL140 Server that contains a SmartArray Controller. This Controller is configured as Raid1. After manuall installation I see the device as /dev/cciss/{Partitions}. When I try to create a hp.xml File everything looks good in the XML. When I try to install with this File, I get an error on Console simular to this: 'adding swap on /dev/cciss/c0p0??? Priority: -4 extends: 1' At this point my installation is stopping and I will kicked off to Linuxrc. I tried <partitioning config:type="list"> <drive> <device>/dev/md</device> or <partitioning config:type="list"> <drive> <device>/dev/cciss</device> or <partitioning config:type="list"> <drive> <device>/dev/md0</device> without any success.... Hi all! I've a problem with my autoyast configuration. Although I've specified packages for removing in the remove-packages section of software in autoyast, they're still there after the installation.
