cannot use keyboard other than language

I have a problem with automatic installation of SuSE Linux 8.1 and 8.2. I need to select czech language but english (US) keyboard map. Generated XML file contains <keyboard> <keymap>english-us</keymap> </keyboard> <language>cs_CZ</language> but the system is installed with czech keyboard map anyway. Is there a way to use czech language but english-US keyboard map? Michal Kubecek

The network card is an onboard Intel eepro100 which isn't correctly recognized by grub's eepro100 driver. SuSE 8.2's driver recognizes the card. Image from http://www.rom-o-matic.com will recognize the card but uses DHCP which I can't use because I MUST ENTER my own IP address and hostname at bootprompt. So I'm back at the beginning: How can I tell autoyast to load module eepro100 from modules3 disk? If I enter this at the bootprompt it will be ignored. Hi Thanks for this greate tipp! - Do you have any idea if it's possible to build a disk with more than one single dirver? On the URL you told, i can only download an floppyimage with one driver. Is there any problem by building a floppy disk with more than one driver? Thanks! Problems with Grub Floppy

Hi All At the moment we are use 4 bootdisks to install linux by using autoyast. In the feature we want to have only one disk. So i test tftp and bootp with grub. It works without problem on some systems... but on our new systems (Dell GX260) it will not work because the networkcard driver failed. Does anybody know how to add the "Intel Ethernet Express 1000/MT" to grub? I just tried to compile (0.93) and create the grubbootdisk myself, but i did not find anyway to include another driver. Which kind of driver can i include to grub and how can i include this dirvers? Thanks! Bye Alexander

I need to enter IP address and hostname manually at the boot prompt because this is customer specific. I can't use DHCP or similar things for getting automatic addresses and so on. Later my pre install script reads the hostname out of boot parameters and creates a serial number from it. No solution for me. My pre install script does a bad block check on the harddisk and will tell wether the hd is ok or not. If it's not ok the installation will be interrupted. So I have to see this during the installation. creating a swap partition

hello List, I'm using SuSE version 8.0 and I love it. I'm trying with "yast autoyast" to configure a swap partition but it does not work. When the auto-install does his job I have the message "The hard disk has an unsupported partition table." or something similar (mainly all other things are working ok). What is the correct way to do this ? it does not work either putting 'swap' or not as the mount point. Here is the representation : ??Options?????????????????????? Additional package not in ISO-image

Hi, I added an additional package into a newly created i386-folder and have run the create_package_descr as described. The package identifies itself as i386-arch. The problem is that the file is not added to the ISO-image, from which I would like to install the target-system. I found that an earlier version of the package that I created (compiled and packaged) on this system is found in every packages-file that has been created by create_package_descr. That means that there is the same package with 2 different version numbers in the packages files. Is this the cause for the malfunction? How can I get the additional package integrated into the ISO-file? Thanks Silvério Santos

How do I adding users by using a usertemplate

Hi, how can I add users for a bigger linux-lan by using a usertemplate. All users should have the same company-desktop. I tried copying the default files from an other userdirectory but after login in with the new user the kde fails. The useradding via above mentioned method should be possible by using a systemfunction or automaticly by using a script. SuSE 8.0 autoinstall issue with Yast2

Hello everyone, the first time i installed SuSe 8.0 everything went just fine, i had some hardware problems involving a new HD so i find myself with the chance of installing linux again. Partitioning wise the linux dedicated hdb has a hdb1swap partition and hdb2 is the root partition, LILO was supposed to be on a floppy disk and default office with KDE desktop and the linux documentation where the packages i selected to be installed. It went fine during partitioning, package installation but, when it got to writing LILO to the floppy disk the system rebooted spontaneously. Any way i think i managed to complete installation by booting from the Cd and using the manual installation option in yast2 (LILO step was completly ignored) and then the boot installed system option, at least a password for root was set and a user was created. Once linux was loaded (working just fine) i went to the bootloader module in Yast 2 and to my surprise i find that lilo was configured to be installed in the MBR. Anyway, i changed that and configured linux to be booted from a floppy disk. Checked SuSE's support database in search for help but i cant seem to find a reference to the Kernel panic: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on 03:42 error message. Can somebody enlighten this lost and searching soul? José Gabriel Arnewi

Hello, and just another question. I'd like to format the newly created partitions with badblock check. I know yast2 doesn't support this anymore, but maybe autoyast? Sometimes we get a delivery from our vendors with "weak" harddisks. I'd like to exclude those machines during the installation process. Hostnames

Hello, I know you discussed this already in may 2002. But I have a problem. I need to set the hostname before installation of the packages and can't use DHCP because the hostname will be customer dependent. A rpm package that will be installed needs to know the correct hostname because it creates a serial number from the hostname. Entering the IP address at the boot prompt is only the half way... Is it possible to ask the user during a pre install script to enter a hostname that is stored in an environment variable? Maybe yast/autoyast could get the name later from this variable? Hello, I am using SLES 8 with autoyast. So far it works very well. But I didn´t understand, how to use "classes". I managed to to create different classes with different configurations in this classes. Using yast2 autoyast, I am able to create a new XML file for the normal repository for a new maschine. Insted of merging the classes,I can build a XML file which uses the defined classes. A XML file looks like: <?xml version="1.0"?> <!DOCTYPE profile SYSTEM "/usr/share/YaST2/include/autoinstall/profile.dtd"> <profile xmlns="http://www.suse.com/1.0/yast2ns" xmlns:config="http://www.suse.com/1.0/configns"> <install> <classes config:type="list"> <class> <class_name>Custom</class_name> <configuration>User</configuration> </class> <class> <class_name>Serverhardware</class_name> <configuration>HP_Vectra_430</configuration> </class> <class> <class_name>Software</class_name> <configuration>Minimalserver</configuration> </class> </classes> </install> </profile> But if I try to install an new maschine with this XML file, an error occures. I think, the installer doesn´t find it´s class files. Where do I have to put the class files ? RH's Kickstart vs. SuSE's AutoYast2 NFS installs

Hello everyone, In our company, we have several developers who are porting services to both RH AS and SLES 8. We have set up NFS installs for them to install these OSes for development and testing. There is a variety of hardware to install on so our installs must let the user setup hardware (video, partitioning, etc.) themselves. The RH install uses Kickstart and sets defaults in the install (timezone, additional packages, etc). We can set kickstart to be interactive so that the user can control most of the install (this is nice and perfect for our environment). Our SLES NFS install is currently working perfectly however, I don't see a way to change default install options and be interactive like a kickstart install. After reading about and testing some AutoYast2 installs, it seems to be completely automated and require things such as partitioning and other hardware specific choices to be predetermined. Is this true? Am I missing something? Can I set AutoYast2 to be interactive and just take defaults from it's config? Is there a better way? Maybe AutoYast is not the answer to my questions. Is there a way using AutoYast or other other method to change the install defaults, to do an NFS install but change some of the default options and do some extra things and remain interactive? I need to: * autodetect NIC and use DHCP for initial configuration during install * let the user set up hardware (partitioning, video, etc) * Let the user select or remove software packages if they choose * install some custom developed RPMs on the user's system regardless of their choice of profile or individual package selection. (I have added these packages to the installation according AUtoYast2 instructions). * preset the timezone * install a custom ntp.conf * add entries to their /etc/fstab for some nfs entries -- Marc Christensen http://www.mecworks.com

Keeping partitions (again)

I've carefully read the autoyast partitioning documentation,I've gone through the last four months of archives, I've done the y2update thing from http://www.suse.de/~nashif/autoinstall/y2update/ and have verified that this is mounted and read - and still I can't get my partitions the way I want them. "Not enough free space on /dev/hda", alternatively "No free space" when creating the partition plan. User intervention with AutoYast2?

Hello, In reading the AutoYast2 documentation for SLES 8, I see two seemingly conflicting descriptions of the level of user intervention. In the first sentance of the first paragraph of chapter one, it states "AutoYast2 is the system for installing one of more SuSE Linux systems automatically and without user intervention". Later on, in second to last paragraph of secion 1.2, it states "Using a control file, Yast2 prepares the system for a custom installation and avoids any interaction with the user, unless specified in the control file". So, my question is, how well (or minimaly) can I control what the user can enter? In my situation, I am setting up an NFS install for several hundred testers and developers. They are working on various machines from a number of vendors and I want them to basicaly do everything in the installation themselves (apart from a few presets): I only want to: * install some custom developed RPMs on their system regardless of their choice of profile or individual package selection. (I have added these packages to the installation according Anas' instructions). * preset the timezone * install a custom ntp.conf * add entries to their /etc/fstab for some nfs entries That's basicaly it. Because of the diverse needs of the installers and the various machines they will be installing, it is only feasible to have one control file and let then to most of the configuration themsleves as opposed to writting a custom control file for each type of hardware with different harddrives and videocards, etc. Is this goal within the scope of AutoYast2? Hello *, my autoyast works now very fine! The only problem is, autoyast ask me after parsing the controlfile in a little green popup-window "install now" or "abort installation". I want to do that automaticly. rpm update errors

Hello, I use the online_update script via cron to download packages, and then I use it manually to install packages. Recently, updates to apache2 were downloaded, but running online_update -i returns an error when trying to update apache. So then I decided to try updating apache manually via rpm, here are the errors: # rpm -Uvh apache2-2.0.46-3.i586.rpm error: failed dependencies: libapr0 = 2.0.46 is needed by apache2-2.0.46-3 apache2 = 2.0.44 is needed by apache2-devel-2.0.44-38 apache_mmn_20020903_0 is needed by apache2-prefork-2.0.44-38 apache_mmn_20020903_0 is needed by apache2-mod_perl-1.99_08-29 # rpm -Uvh apache2-devel-2.0.46-3.i586.rpm error: failed dependencies: apache2 = 2.0.46 is needed by apache2-devel-2.0.46-3 I know how to manually go, one by one, and install the necessary packages in order to get around the dependency problems. But doesn't YasT2 provide a way to automatically take care of that? That's one of the purposes of using an auto-install program, so I don't have to worry about the dependency issues... Another question, I see a kernel update was downloaded recently. What is the recommended procedure for upgrading the kernel? Will the online_update script take care of that automatically, including any grub changes or do I need to do something myself? Thanks for your help. Ricardo

Problems with the first console (tty0)

Hello list ... I´ve come across somthing weired, and I´m not to shure where the problem comes from. When I install a minimal Setup direcctly from the CD it works perfect. But when i use the autoyast tool i get trouble with the first console (tty0) It shows two login prompts It looks like this : - Welcome to SuSE Linux bla bla (tty1) - -server login: - Welcome to SuSE Linux bla bla (tty0) - -server login:(flashing cursor) When i enter anything for a user name to log in on the first console it echos back some of the characters of the username. After that i´m propted to enter the password, but everything i´m entering is considered as false. If i switch to the second console there is no problem at all with logging on ... Has anybody come across something like that ? Hello, I am trying to setup a SLES 8 using autoyast for servers. Using the original software coming on CD, the installation using autoyast works quite well. But I have no idea how to deal with the patch rpm files from the web. Should I copy them into the /install/sles/CD1 or /install/ul/CD[1,2,3] directory and run the create_package_descr ? Or what is the best way the install the new packages from the begin using using autoyast ? Or must I install the original software and after that perform an update ? How should I deal with the patches in generell ? I dont want to make a online update using the internet. What is the best way to keep a lot of servers up to date ? ThanX Michael

autoyast network installating without specifiying server IP address

Hello, To specify where lives control file for an unattended SuSE 8.1 network installation, a switch is used. For example: autoyast=nfs://192.168.1.30/suse_profiles/ Note that the IP of the NFS server have to be staticly set in the switch. Is there any way of installing without specifing server IP address via DHPC? The fact is that programs as grub are capable of getting files without static server IP address configuration, so I wonder if autoyast can. Thanks in advance! ------------ Fermín

Keep clients updated

Hello I would like to keep auto-installed clients updated, but without a user input. Can yast be configured to check for updates on boot? Well, I ran into another snag. This is really upsetting. I have desktop menu entries for the RPMs that I have built in /etc/opt/gnome/SuSE/System/Configuration/myapp.desktop /etc/opt/gnome/share/gnome/distribution-menus/SuSE/System/Configuration/myapp.desktop /etc/opt/gnome/share/gnome/distribution-menus/SuSE/System/myapp.desktop /etc/opt/kde3/share/applnk/SuSE/Settings/myapp.desktop /etc/opt/kde3/share/applnk/SuSE/System/Configuration/myapp.desktop /etc/opt/kde3/share/applnk/SuSE/System/myapp.desktop (as stated in a previous followup). This works well when installed on an existing system. Adding custom RPMs to an NFS install setup

I've set up an NFS install for SLES 8 & SuSE 8.1 according to chapter 6 ofAutoYast2 guide: http://www.suse.de/~nashif/autoinstall/8.1/autoyast2.pdf I am unclear how to modify this setup to install custom RPMs that I have created and need installed on workstations. I am trying to use AutoYast2 to install a system with two hard drives. I am using SLES8. I want to destroy all existing partitions on both drives and then create the following: sda: /boot, /swap, / (using default values) sdb: /data (which takes up the entire second drive) When I add the information to the partition section of the autoinstall.xml file, I get the following error: "Partition '/data' needs 2.00 MB more disk space. Please deselect some packages." Hi, According to the log files, yast can only see /dev/sda, no /dev/sdb!! /dev/sda is SCSI, 33.90 GB, /dev/sda, LSILOGIC-1030 IM But there is no mention of /dev/sdb, might be a kernel module problem, although mptscsih is loaded... What happens when you try to install manually? This is almost the 'default' problem when you do a 'create_package_descr'. What you must do is a create_package_descr -d /install/suse -l german -l english -x /usr/share/autoinstall/EXTRA_PROV This will do the works! Yes, I include the EXTRA_PROV file (for a Java-RPM). This worked before. The problem I described appears if I replace an original RPM in the repository (in my case, I replaced yast2-ldap-client-2.7.6 with yast2-ldap-client-2.7.7). Afterwards, I do the create_package_descr and the new descriptions will be written to /install/suse/setup/descr/packages[.lang]. When I open yast2 and click on "add software" for the local machine, all dependencies are good and the updated packages are shown. But as soon as I run "yast2 autoyast" and configure the package selections, hundreds of dependencies fail. But the new packages are shown, too. What do I do wrong. Hi I would like to update my repository with some updated RPMs. As described in the autoyast howto, I run "/usr/lib/YaST2/bin/create_package_descr -d /install/suse -l german -l english". The package describtions will be created and stored in "./setup/descr". But when I would like to configure the packages in autoyast, hundreds of dependencies failed, starting with "missing /bin/awk; missing /bin/bash" etc. The only way I found to fix it was to recopy the repository from the DVDs. But then I still have the old packages. What do I do wrong? By the way: What is the best way in order to keep the repository up-to-date. Is there a way that the clients always boot over the network in order to check for updates? I would like the clients to do the following during boot: - Boot over network using PXE - Check if there is a local linux installation - If no -> install - If yes -> compare the installed packages to the repository - If there are updates -> install the updated packages -> local boot - If there are no updates -> local boot This is what the SuSE Smart Client Framework does. Hi I set up an autoinstall server using pxe-boot. For authentication I use LDAP. Unfortunately, if LDAP-client is configured in autoyast, the local users are not available anymore (e.g. root). I found the problem in the nsswitch.conf file. There are the following entries: passwd: ldap group: ldap But there should be "ldap files" instead. How can this be configured during the autoinstall process? Thanks, Daniel

changing autofs to autofs4 in default.sel doesn't work

Hello everyone! I'm trying to change the default automounter package that is instaled by default, from "autofs" to "autofs4". I suppose that the way to do so is changing in default.sel (in the server repository) the line with "autofs" to "autofs4" (I also have re-create the packages database with create_pakage_descr, although I don't know whether this is really needed after changing .sel files). But this doesn't work! The old "autofs" is installed, not the desired "autofs4". Somebody knows what is the cause or how to solve the problem? Thanks in advance! ------------ Fermín

Error while installing addtional Packages

Hi, I am trying to create an ISO-image using the configuration of a system whose configuration I extracted using AutoYaST's clone-function. First I copied the content of the CDs into a folder on the HDD, created an i386 folder below suse, copied the additional package into it and left create_package_descr do its job. Then I created the iso-file, wrote the CD and booted the target-system successfully from it. While installation on the target-system the following appears while configuring software selections: "Error while configuring software selections" and exits to the text-linuxrc. The package has been copied onto the CD into the i386-folder, so the package-description was obviously correct. The package name in the .xml-file has been created by the clone-function on the template-system. Removing this additional package's <package>-entry from the .xml-file provides a fully working automatic installation. On one hand the ISO-file-creation identifies and uses the correct file. On the other hand it looks to me like AutoYaST-Installation is unable to find the filename that is assigned to the package name. May this supposition be correct and if so how can I find the correct "short name" of the package to be installed? But maybe there is another explanation... Thanks and best regards Silvério Santos

parsing control file

Has anyone else experienced this? I've got my info file set to point to a directory. Hence, yast should look for the control file first by hex IP address and then 'default'. Well, I forgot to symlink the control file with default, so it couldn't find a control file. So up comes a prompt asking me to explicitly name the file. I enter the name and it begins to process it, but dies when creating partition plans saying that there is an error with the partition plans - please check the syntax of the control file. I tried a few times with the same result. However, when I created 'default' and linked it to the exact same file, it works. So the bug appears to be that although it prompts the user to explicitly name the control file, it doesn't actually process it. If you have any hints or info, please let me know. Thanks, Robert p.s. Problems with autoinstalling on server with FC-HBA

Dear list ... I'm having severe problems with using autoyast to install SL 8.2 on my servers. I've set up an environment as the one in the document by Anas Nashif That means I'm using DHCP, TFTP and NSF to distribute the kernel initrd and the controlfile The distribution part is working flawless, but it seems as if the partioning is goinig awry somehow. The servers I'm using dont have any local disks but get them through a FC SAN. IThey start up without any problems , load the kernel and initrd, start the HW detection and seem to load all the drivers that are needed. But when it comes to start installing thr packets an errormessage is thrown that states that there is no space left on the HD This is definitly not true, because I've just initialized it -> meaning its absolutly empty Has anybody a clue why this is happening or how I can get more information what is going wrong ? XFree not configured

Hi to all. I am trying to create custom installation disks (for network install) to be used on varius pc in our net. All seem fine, but the installation process fails to configure X11 subsytem on the test computer. The newly installed system starts at runlevel 5, but Kdm doesn't start because XF86Config is wrong. I think the problem is my VGA adapter (S3 Trio3d), sax2 can't correctly recognize it, altought 'xf86config' can be successfully used to set it up correctly. I also tried with another card (an old Cirrus Logic PCI) with no success. At this point I can't try it with other hardware. Any hints? reread partitions

Hi all, does anyone know of a way to make autoyast reread the partition table(s) after (or at the end of) a pre-script execution? I'm trying to remove the current partitions, if any, using "parted", which succeeds. However, I'm guessing that autoyast already has a pretty good idea of the current partition plan based on a partition table(s) read prior to my usage of "parted"? R/Lars S

hey, i've got a nic with an tcp/ip boot-prom (bootix), which requires exactly one bootdisk-image. is there any possibility to create such a disk, merging the existing boot- and modules-disks from the first suse-cd? just using the image of the normal bootdisk, requires to insert the modules-disks. but i cant see any way to get them from tftp-server. any ideas? thanks for your answers Tom

two problems with autoinstall (scripts and grub)

Hallo, I use SuSE 8.2 for autoinstallation with the upgrade by Anas installed. 1. The installed client is configured to use grub with the gfxmenu option. This is definitely in the xml file, but in the installation the file message is missing and so is the gfxmenu line in the menu.lst file. 2. My post installation scripts do contain a lot of empty lines. This is no problem, the scripts are executed correctly. I do make use of classes, and the xml file is merged from 5 different class files. I can send the class files and the merged file, if necessary. The following situation: Copied the cd's to harddisk. An install of this repository is succesfull. In this case the mounted directory is: /ftp/distrib/suse82/base On the same machine suse's updates are being mirrored into: /ftp/distrib/suse82/updates >From the 2 directories (base and updates) I've created a "latest" repository, using relative links. Path to that directory is: /ftp/distrib/suse82/latest. However, during installation the directory /ftp/distrib/suse82/latest is mounted and for this reason the links made in that directory are going nowhere. The directories updates and base are not visible. A solution is to copy all the files. But is it possible to have suse mount /ftp/distrib/suse82/ but to use the path /ftp/distrib/suse82/latest?? Re-inventing the Wheel

I recognize that this problem has probably been tackled before, but I also recognize that there's probably a one line answer, too. I have duplicated all the SuSE 8.2 CD's to an apache server and made them available via http. What I want to end up with is a Floppy disk I can give out that people can boot to install SuSE. They need to be able to do all configuration as they normally would, EXCEPT that I want it to use MY list of rpm packages to install. I can make an .sel file and place it with the others in the http server (I think) but what I need is a boot floppy that will let folks configure for their hardware, including partitioning, etc. but enforce my package list on their install. In RH, I would just make a normal boot floppy, create/modify the ks.cfg, and the ks.cfg would list the packages but not much else, forcing the system to ask about anything not listed. It seems a little less straight-forward in SuSE. Pointers on how to, or url's with existing HOWTO docs would be greatly appreciated! Jonathon M. OK, after running YOU, I found that the updated autoyast2-installation package indeed has the rules.dtd file. But looking over the file led me to a new question: what is <operator>? From looking through /usr/share/YaST2/modules/AutoInstallRules.ycp, I found it can either take "and" or "or". This leads me to think that the prerequisites for a <result> can be conditional. I haven't seen this documented anywhere there. Anas, is this functional? If so, how does one use it? SuSE 8.2 Prof installation of devs-2003.3.14-1 : rm: command not found

Hello List, While my configuration of autoyast in SuSE Linux 8.1 works perfectly an annoying RAID controller in a Dell server forced me to upgrade to 8.2. Normal installation from the SuSE CD's works like a charm. However, autoyast (adapted to the 8.2 rpm's like coreutils) returns errormessages during installation : - SuSE 8.2 Professional via autoyast - installation of devs-2003.3.14-1 - Error messages : - var/tmp/rpm-tmp.<PID>: line <n>: rm: command not found (line = 5 and 8) I checked (on tty2) and indeed most programs in /mnt/bin and /mnt/usr/bin are failing. Yast8.1 update?

Hi I have a problem with yast software update in SuSE8.1 I have manually upgraded KDE to 3.1.1. Now if I try and use Yast it has all of the KDE rpms marked in red as my version is higher than the avaiable, if if I try and up grade anything else it insists on distroying KDE. ( I assume it is reloading the old versions, but I have not let it succeed) I understand the version in 8.2 has this fixed. Can I upgrade to Yast8.2, without changing the whole world? If so how? (detailed instructions for a dumb user please 8-) ) I have also seen that it is possible to use the existing Yast without the unwanted behavior by clicking "cancel instead of yes" Can anyone clarify when I do this as the last attempt did not stop the damage 8-( If the reply is RTFM, directions to where TFM is please.
