cannot use keyboard other than language

I have a problem with automatic installation of SuSE Linux 8.1 and 8.2. I need to select czech language but english (US) keyboard map. Generated XML file contains <keyboard> <keymap>english-us</keymap> </keyboard> <language>cs_CZ</language> but the system is installed with czech keyboard map anyway. Is there a way to use czech language but english-US keyboard map? Michal Kubecek

sles 8 RAID in autoyast

Hi, I am having a lot of trouble getting autoyast to install a raid configuration. I have tried several methods from the "documentation" and mailing-lists but I still get errors regarding the size of '/' and '/var' (basically, the raid arrays are not being set up properly). This is SLES 8 on an Opteron system. I have even tried installing manually then using yast2 to create a clone.xml. Using the clone.xml untouched on the same system results in a "Preparting the RAID system failed" error. Updating YaST2 in installation repository

Hello everyone, I have read in the online documentation available that bugs of the autoinstallation system (enable_3d, password in clear text, ...) can be solved updating yast2 related RPMs (yast2, autoyast2, yast2-x11, etc). I would like to know wheter the updating processes is as simple as the addition of customized packages: delete the old RPM file in the repository, copy the updated one to the same directory (noarch, i586, etc.) and runing cd <repository>/suse /usr/lib/YaST2/bin/create_package_descr to update the packet database. grub as default

Hi Anas, is it possible to set up grub as default bootloader with autoyast, even if ones selects lvm and/or softwareraid for sles8? packages not available

Hi! I got a strange problem here when creating ISO image from a defined resourcefile. It seems as it does not matter, what packages are selected, only the amount of packaged not found varies. Errormsg: 2 packages not available. The summery says: <screen> Package Source /SuSE/8.2 Packages 2 Missing Packages </screen> The system to be cloned was installed from network with FTP from my installserver (The path on the server is /SuSE/8.2, maybe something to do with the summery screen?). I'm pretty sure, that I'm missing something, but what? Unfortunately I need to install the servers very quickly, so answers would be very appreciated. rgds Luc

Weird hardware configuration issue

Hello everyone, I use the following configuration in my control file in order to configure my network card (a conventional Realtek 8139): ... <interfaces config:type="list"> <interface> <bootproto>dhcp</bootproto> <device>eth0</device> <module>8139too</module> <startmode>onboot</startmode> </interface> </interfaces> During the first X logon I'm notified about new hardware, as if the network device would have just been instaled. But the hardware (as eth0) is working! Moreover, when I run YaST2 control center I see one network device (without name) configured and other detected (with the real name of my card, Realtek etc). Anyone knows what's the problem and how can I autoinstall SuSE with the hardware configured properly? I also would like to know about configuring sound cards. I have tried ... <sound> <autoinstall config:type="boolean">true</autoinstall> </sound> ... but I seems doen't work. Maybe I need aditional parameter (as described in "4.1.13.2. Applying patches on SuSE 8.2

Hi A question related to the new updates for SuSE 8.2. I have a FTP-server as installation server, a TFTP-server for the configuration files, I boot the PC to install from the original SuSE 8.2 CD having the info file on floppy in this PC. I have two problems already discussed on this list: - No execution of Perl-Post-Installation scripts. I copied the new RPMs on the installation server overwriting the original ones. That works, Perl scripts are now executed. Thanks! - Keeping partitions. To solve this problem I'd need to update the boot cd. There is a description to press the Alt-key during boot for being asked for a floppy - well despite pressing Alt really hard, the PC keeps booting :-( Then I thought that "F3 - Driver Update" on the Bootmanager selection screen would be worth a try. And indeed, it requests a disk. However, I can't figure out, whether the patches are really applied, and the problem "no space left on /dev/hdb/" stays. Is there a simple way to apply the patches in my configuration. Preferably a patched CD image I could just burn and boot from? Thanks, Thomas

Hi! Is there a possibility to influence the order of RPM's installed on the system ? I want to make sure, that a 3rd party RPM is installed after inetd for example. Can I change this behaviour ? Second I habe problem's with the kernel. In most cases k_deflt and k_smp is installed, sometimes the k_deflt kernel is installed after k_smp. It's not recognizing the right kernel image. But autoyast always want's to install a package k_smp. update floppy

hello everyone i am trying to use the y2update file Anas published in the SuSE site for solving several problems. it seems the pressed Alt key is detected during the boot process, as isolinux writes 'Update floppy' (or something like this) in the screen bottom right, and after loading kernel and initrd, y stops waiting for your (my) CDROM/floppy to be inserted in the unit. Any way i get no proof of it is being read so (QUESTION) is there any log file or entry where it gets stated? Should i find some clues anywhere? thanks in advance. Pablo

Hello again I am using a SuSE 7.3 as server but installing a 8.2 via network. This is the <user> section the .xml contains: <users config:type="list"> <user> <encrypted config:type="boolean">true</encrypted> <user_password>z9GVieH7YNmSE</user_password> <username>root</username> </user> <user> <encrypted config:type="boolean">false</encrypted> <user_password>clh</user_password> <username>clh</username> </user> <user> <encrypted config:type="boolean">false</encrypted> <user_password>pgomez</user_password> <username>pgomez</username> <uid>1000</uid> </user> </users> root is succesfully created, but 'clh' and 'pgomez' aren't. I tried to supply encrypted passwords both for 'pgomez' and 'clh' users without luck. Any clue? thanks in advance.

hi Thanks for answer... We will build the image by using ghost ( support for ext2fs ). So we are able to recreate the image on the most partitions. The networkboot is not possible because we have many different systems with different hardware on different locations. The lastes systems supports booting form network, but we have many older systems, that do not support this function. So we have to create a possibillity to initialize a autoinstall without this hardware. At the moment we need 3 disks to start the autoinstall and 1 disk to prepare the computer for installing operatingsystems.Linux will be the second os beside a windows os. Our preparedisk creates all needed partitions, so autoyast only format the partions, that was marked for linux. Do you know a possibillity to copy a Image of SuSE CD1 on a harddisk image and boot from it? Do you know any possiblity to build a very small suse installation instead of the first? Installation: 1. prepare hdd 2. copy linux image to partition ( the parttition is >4GB ) 3. boot from this linux 4. start autoinstall ( Installserver NFS ) The autoinstall should format the partions with small linux. Any ideas? You could try to create this small installation with dhcp network (so you don't have different network settings on every machine) and automatic startup of autoinstallation after boot. There are tools for creating (and restoring) disk images, don't really know, what the name was for the free gnu tool, something like gnupart. I need to do custom installations of SuSE Linux 8.2 on industry box computers without Floppy or CDROM, using only the PXE network boot support provided by the BIOS and GRUB. The toughest part seems to be to get the initial ramdisk (initrd) populated and running, and I can't seem to find enough valid information on this subject. I have adapted /sbin/mk_initrd, but I'm probably doing something wrong there. I am not quite sure if this mailing list is the right place to ask for help regarding ramdisk usage. Hi All, I want to create a diskless installation for our os installroutine. How can i create a small basic linux installation on a partition so i am able to clone this partition. After this on each System i want to install i copy this image on a ready prepartitioned hdd. Now i am able to boot from this partition an load all needed modules and start the autoinstall. While autoinstall the partitions will be only formated and Linux will be installed. Is there any discription to do things like that? thanks a lot! bye Alexander

Dear All, On /dev/hda, there are 5 partitions: /dev/hda5 /boot (32MB) /dev/hda6 swap (2.0GB) /dev/hda7 / (10.0GB) /dev/hda8 /install (10.0GB) /dev/hda9 /home (80.0GB) I would like to autoinstall SuSE 8.2 with KEEPING all partitons, format /dev/hda5,...,/dev/hda8 and not format /dev/hda9. first boot -> problems

Hello. I have just got the autoinstall system up and running, but am experiencing some problems. In order of not flooding the list with descriptions, I'll just speak of one of them. I am trying to install a fresh locally downloaded 8.2 distro in its ftp-site. While i get some ISOLINUX errors, the install process starts and ends as expected except: The root user account is created but others account are not. problems when autoinstall several machine from network

Hi, I setup a autoinstall server using dhcp, atftp, nfs for SLES8 . And it could work automatically. Recently, I met some problems when installing several machine concurrent. Sometimes, a machine will stop when retrieving or parsing control file. Sometimes, a machine will meet some package error. If I installed each machine alone , it could be installed automatically without any error. But in my situation, I really need install several machines concurrently. Could any modification to autoyast or nfs configuration make it better? Is there any performance data for the network autoinstallation? Any suggestions is welcome. access CD via installation

Hi! I have the following problem: I want to install ServerView for Siemens Primergy Server's. These RPM packages have some pre- and postinstall routines, which makes it unpossible, to install these packages correctly during installation of the RPM's. I think I can solve that problem in the postinstall scripts, starting the needed services and so on and installing the needed RPM's. But how can I access the CD-ROM. I former versions of SuSE (with autoinstalling with Alice) I could access the data on the CD-ROM through the path /var/adm/mount, but I tried this and found no CD data. Can you give me the path the CD-ROM is mounted on ? Hi, I found the problem already. The linuxrc line in the syslinux.cfg file on the bootdisk stated auto2. I had to remove the 2 for it to work. However, currently yast crashes half way trough it. Runlevel Problem SuSE 8.2 with all Patches

Hello, I'm using the AutoYast-Mechanism to create Custom-CD`s. The CD`s work like a charm, but a little problem with the configuration of the Runlevel occurs. It`s absolutely irrelevant which Runlevel i select in the Configuration-Gui, the Linux-System starts up with Runlevel 5. In the AutoYast of SuSE 8.1 the problem did not occur. But I need runlevel 3 as i don`t want somone to login into X before a certain Installation of Software is done. Exactly-> I patch the passwd, so that if I login as root a Script is triggered which demands a CD to install other Software. I tried to use scripts to change the Runlevel in the Chroot-Environment and in the Post-Install. The Scripts are working.-> logfiles. I think that the Runlevel is written in the second part of the Installation (Post-Install)after the Reboot. Does someone has the same problem or a solution for that problem. Perl script for post-installation

Hi I have a problem using a perl script for postinstallation on a SuSE8.2. The following is from my config file: ... <scripts> <post-scripts config:type="list"> <script> <filename>passwdedit.pl</filename> <interpreter>perl</interpreter> <source> <![CDATA[#!/usr/bin/perl # passwdedit.pl ... ]]> </source> </script> </post-scripts> </scripts> ... After installation I find no indication in /var/adm/autoinstall/logs that the script has been even started. A normal shell script works fine producing a log file. What am I missing? Thanks, Thomas

Autoyast with floppy

Hi, I have a problem and need some help. I don't now where to start solving the problem: I have a couple of machines I want to install with autoyast, but they have no cdrom and no network cards with boot rom, so I can't use PXE or Etherboot. Because I have to install about a hundret machines, switching floppies is no option. How can I put all neccessary files on one floppy or how can I setup the server machines. Booting with nfs-root is not a problem, but what have I to put in the root-directory to run autoyast? Sascha

kickstart vs. Suse autoinstall

All my experience with automated network install on Linux has been with RedHat kickstart. I'm in the process of evaluating SuSe Linux as a replacement for RedHat. All I know is that something similar exists for SuSe. Could someone point me in the right direction so I could get up to speed as quickly as possible? error while configuring software selections

I am installing SLES8 with autoinstall using NFS. I have copied all four installation CD's (starting with the boot CD and ending with the UnitedLinux CD #3) into a subdirectory at an NFS mountable location. If I autoinstall UnitedLinux base (<base>UnitedLinux</base>), everything works fine, but if I try to install default base (<base>default</base>) I get the message "error while configuring software selections". Since there are no further error messages, I don't know what it is missing. Interestingly, if I copy the four installation CD's into the NFS subdirectory in reverse order (starting with UnitedLinux CD #3 and ending with the boot CD), autoinstallation acts as if I have requested installation from CD's and prompts me to insert UnitedLinux CD #1, even though I have specified NFS autoinstallation. install network interface card

Who can help me? I cannot reach the internet with SuSE Linux!!!!!! :-( I'm anxious to change from windows to Linux, but in spite of all my efforts I did not succeed in getting SuSE Linux 7.3 working. The basic installation was no problem at all. YaST2 worked fine and configuring most of my hardware was fixed in a minute, except for: * At first my ISDN-adapter (Eicon Diva 2.01 ISA) was only partly recognized by SuSE 7.3, so I could not reach the internet and I had to manage again with windows. * Recently I changed to ADSL / ethernet LAN, using a Sweex LANCard ethernet card and an Alcatel SpeedTouch 510i router modem to access the internet. Again I tried to install SuSE Linux 7.3. This time the Sweex LANCard could not be configured (inactive) in SuSE Linux 7.3. I thought to have found the solution to my problem on the website of Sweex: a driver file to be used with Linux kernel 2.4.x.: 'mtd80x-linux-2.4.x.tgz' was tested with SuSE Linux 7.2, so it should also work with SuSE 7.3. However, the textfile with instructions to install this driver in SuSE Linux 7.3 was not complete. ************************************************************************ ******************************* * I really hope that someone can help me to install the Linux driver for my network card. * ************************************************************************ ******************************* According to the Sweex instructions, the following steps should be followed: 1. Copy 'mtd80x-linux-2.4.x.tgz' to /tmp 2. tar -zxvf mtd80x-linux-2.4.x.tgz (uncompress) A new (sub)directory 'linux-2.4.x' was created with the following files: * kern_compat.h * Makefile * mtd80x.c * pci-scan.c * pci-scan.h * Readme.txt (Of course these 2 steps are clear and gave no problem!) 3. Make network adapter driver modules via: touch * make clean make ---> After 'make clean' I got the following message: make: *** No rule to make target 'clean'. Stop. The instructions in the text file mentioned that a file 'version.h' is expected. ---> But this file is not present in the created subdirectory 'linux-2.4.x' when used with SuSE Linux 7.2 / 7.3. For SuSE Linux you have to run 'make config' or 'make menuconfig' at /usr/src/linux to create it. ---> My problem is that I don't have a subdirectory '/usr/src/linux'. Where can I find/create the file 'version.h'? Who knows? 4. After step 3 the network adapter driver modules should be inserted via: insmod pciscan.o insmod mtd80x.o ---> Where should those driver modules be placed (in which subdirectory?). 5. Bind your card to an IP address ifconfig eth0 (IPADDR) netmask (NETMASK) -> ('ifconfig eth0 10.0.0.150 netmask 255.255.255.0' should do the job) 6. Now you should be able to ping the local network But: every time you reboot the system, you must execute step 4 and 5 again to bind your card :-( I would be very happy if someone can give me some hints! (I would even more happy if YaST2 could configure my network ethernet adapter card automatically (although I understand that it is not possible to integrate all network adapter cards on the market in SuSE Linux YaST2. However Linux is worthless nowadays if you cannot access the internet!!!) Thanks, Peter

The dhcp-Server works... the client recieves its image... the automated installation works(linux installation)... the installation is completed and the client boots the first time... now this is displayed: ... Hi! I've created a custom boot cd. If I boot from this cd, I will prompt to specify the location of the autoinst.xml. But this file is on top of the created cd. Any ideas ?
