SWAT (Samba Web Admnistration Tool) installation with Yast2, SuSe 8.2

Hello. I have installed the Samba packages supplied with SuSe 8.2, using Yast2. Samba works fine but SWAT is not usable. When calling http://localhost:901 from Konqueror, the answer is : Impossible to connect to localhost (port 901). Looks funny because I had no problem with older version of SuSe. The various files involved, /etc/inedt, /etc/services look fine. What should I do to obtain SWAT ? Thanks -- Yvon Nedonchelle

strange behaviour yast2 in graphical mode

Hi, When autoinstalling I have the strange situation that yast2 crashes out of the install when it is running in graphical mode. In a few cases I got even a kernel panic! If I install the machine in text mode everything is fine. Has someone got a clue? Q: Installation repository from SP3 CD images

Hi, does anyone have a detailed instruction how to build an installation repository for SP3 (2 CDs - which is which???) using the ISO images directly, i.e. without copying everything to a filesystem? Dear fellow SuSE fans (sometimes a little bit victim!!) I have a Dynalink 1456 intern PCI modem, a conexant SoftK56 data, fax, TAMPCI modem with Vendor ID = 127a and Device ID = 1025 on my computer. After installation of SuSE 9.0 and configuration of Kinternet, as given below, and configuration of the modem with Yast as ppp0 I could not make contact with my provider. No way! I tried to install hsfmodem-6.03.00lnxt03091800free_k2.4.20_4GB-1suse-i586 from Linuxant but got the message "existing driver modules found under /lib/modules/2.4.21-99-athlon/misc/" where I found 8 files hsf*.0 In information center I got the following: PCI 00:07.0 Communication controller Rockwell International HCF 56k Data/Fax?Voice/Spkp Subsystem: Rockwell International HCF 56k Data/Fax?Voice/Spkp(w/Handset)Modem Flags: bus master, medium devsel, latency 64, IRQ 10 Memory at dffe0000 (32-bit, non prefetchable)(size = 64k) I/O ports at c 400 [size = 8] Capabilities: <availble only to root> Meanwhile a understood from the Linuxant site that my modem could run under a hcf or a hsf driver Can anybody tell me what to do? hallo, i try to use autoyast to intall SuSE 9.0 Professional. SuSE 8.2 works fine, but 9.0 i get an error: net activation failed. i wont boot from cdrom, use dhcp to configure network, and install from network. - boot from cdrom works - dhcp configure works - installing over network fails i try this with different PCs with different network-cards on console 3 i see following messages Sending DHCP request to eth0... ok. eth0 aktivated Starting portmap. OK, going to mount 10.28.232.211:/tools2/dist ... NFS mount ok Ok, that didn't work; see if we can activatee another network device... No further network cards found; giving up. ... net activation faild ... yast rpm list

Hi, I'm looking for a way to do an ALT+F2 while the machine is installing and view a list of RPMS that YaST2 is going to install. I can look at /var/log/YaST2/y2log and see what RPMS are currently being installed. (if I tail -f it) or there was another file I found that would tell me what has been installed as well in a more readable list, but I haven't been able to find a way to see a list that says: Ok, I'm going to install these 400 RPMS. While looking at the code, I found a few files that seemed like they might have helped like a "remain" file but it never gets written anywhere. I know it says it in the autoyast file, but if I don't explicitly say which RPMS and use the Minimal+X11 I won't know what it's installing unless I parse the other files. So can anyone tell me where I can find a list in there that says "These are the 400 files that I am going to install:..." ? Thanks, Vallard

some services dont't start after installing a system with autoyast

Hi, i`m new in working with SuSE autoinstallation system. I want install a SuSE Linux 8.2 on a system without floppy/CD/DVD. I boot from an USB stick and the packages to install are on an FTP Server. The installation works fine but i have one problem. I have written a custom package named mesuNET, which needs mysql for correct starting. Although, i wrote the the commands for starting the services mysql and mesuNET into autoyast.xml, mesuNET was not started automatically after installation. .... <runlevels> <default>5</default> <services config:type="list"> <service> <service_name>mysql</service_name> <service_start>3 5</service_start> </service> <service> <service_name>mesuNET</service_name> <service_start>3 5</service_start> </service> </services> </runlevels> .... mysql was started correct, mesuNET was completely installed but the links in /etc/init.d/rc3.d and /etc/init.d/rc5.d are not present. Is it possible that autoyast tries to start the services (listed in autoyast.xml) in alphabetical order? FC HBA module not loading

To all, I'm trying to automate my Boot to SAN deployments. But I'm running into an issue where my qla2300 module will not load. I'm using sp2a and UL. I can go through the steps manually and everything is fine. But, unattended, The err msg states " No disk found". Obvious, the qla2300 is not loading. lsmod confirms it. I can switch consoles and perform an insmod qla2300.o. installing SuSE

Hi, I'm what you would call a Linux newbie started exploring Linux with RedHat 9 (don't worry my question will about SuSE) which I installed on a PC which is triple boot (two versions of XP and RedHat 9) using Grub. I'd like to compare SuSE with RedHat and would like to install SuSE 8.2 (or do you recommend waiting for 9) : my question is what partions do I need and can I e.g. (re)use the RedHat 9 swap partion (512MB) as well as the /boot partition (what would be the minimum space needed on /boot). I would keep both Linuxes and select the one I want to explore using Grub. My 80 GB disk looks like : XP (38GB, NTFS); RH9 /boot (102MB, ext3); RH9 SWAP (512MB); RH9 / (9.8GB, ext3); free 27 GB. The second XP system is on a second 20GB disk. Also where can I download the CD iso image for SuSE 8.2 ? All advice and comments welcome. Kind regards, Frederic

Hi, any takers to this one? I posted this some time ago, no answer yet... I am trying to set up an installation server from the respective CD images. I would like to just keep the images on the machine and mount them loop,ro, like /pub/SLD /pub/SLD/CD1 /pub/SLD/CD2 /pub/SLD/CD3 /pub/SLD/CD4 /pub/SLD/CD5 /pub/SLD/ISO /pub/SLES8-AMD64 /pub/SLES8-AMD64/ISO /pub/SLES8-AMD64/SLES8-CD1 /pub/SLES8-AMD64/SLES8-CD2 /pub/SLES8-AMD64/SLES8-CD3 /pub/SLES8-AMD64/SLES8-CD4 etc.... The ISO directories keep the images, the CD1,2,3.. directories are the mountpoints. I can't find any way to actually treat this structure as installation repositories. Has anybody had the same problem and can provide a nice solution? I would guess order / instorder is a solution but SLD and SuSE-8.2 don't have the yast directory. Seems I don't get it. Hi Anas I went through the doc. According to the doc, we require to setup BootP/DHCP and tftp servers. But in my current setup we have a netware server as dhcp server and I have configured tftp on suse 8.2 linux server. I don't know how to proceed. Is it possible to create a boot disk and a configuration file which gives information of NFS server, from where to get the IP (i.e., specifying the DHCP Server IP), hostname, router ..... SuSE 8.1 Pro and P4 Hyperthreading

Does anyone know which desktop versions of SuSE, if any, support or will work on P4 machines with Hyperthreading enabled? Was trying to install 8.1 Pro on an IntelD865GBFL w/HT enabled and though it would boot from the CD, it could not mount the CD for install, nor could it identify any IDE devices at all. Suspecting it is the HT, can anyone confirm/deny or shed light on it? The hardware DB states nothing remarkable either way about the Intel D865G board/chip. Which kernel (2.4.?) supports P4 Hyperthreading? Thanks Chris Ridley

Hi, I am trying to install proftpd and proftpd-inetd using the "post-package" tag, but cant get it to work no matter what.! i've created a new package description with create_package_descr, and when i launch yast on the target system, the proftpd and proftpd-inetd packages are available. Here is the software section of the autoinstall.xml: <software> <post-packages config:type="list"> <package>proftpd</package> <package>proftpd-inetd</package> </post-packages> <base>Miniftp</base> The post-package tag dosent even work if proftpd is included in the Miniftp.sel file. but installs fine without the post-package tag. The reason why i want to use the post-package tag is that when i install the proftpd-inetd package without the tag, the original file (inetd.conf) is renamed to .newrpm and the new inetd.conf now only contains the proftpd section.! -- Thanks and best regards Miro Barbu.

I need to use http to get the autoyast file. It works as expected, however I have to now use a different port. If I put http://ip:port/path in my network boot loader :port is not interpreted and I am left with a blue screen prompt asking for the http URL. Both my path and IP are present, but the port is not. If I append :port to the IP it works. However I need this to work in an automated way. I need this is for SLES8 x86, x86_64, ia64, and SuSE 8.1 and later. Thanks.

hanks for the people who helped... I have solved the problem (again more by luck than judgement)... I had installed WinXP first and created three partitions... two NTFS (C:, D:) and one small Vfat to allow simple transfers between Linux and Windows (E:). I left 10 Gb unllallocated to the 8.2 install. I installed 8.2 using the automatic settings (boot and root partitions). After installation it would not boot i.e. Kernal panic (as described below.) Eventually I guessed that Grub had somehow got itself in a mess and was loaded in the 'incorrect' places. So I went into Windows and deleted the Vfat partition. This should not have affected Grub in any way... it was only a simple Windows partition...except the next reboot caused a total boot failure with Grub unable to load. This was not just a Kernel Panic but person panic aswell! Used the installation DVD to do a clean install of root and boot partitions in all the non-windows space (i.e. the original 10Gb plus the space freed up by deleting the Vfat partition). AND..... a) Grub recovered its boot menu.... b) I got my Windows XP boot option back (pheww...) c) 8.2 booted perfectly this time d) both the sound and the X server worked without problems (which had not been the case on the problem install.) So that was it... Grub had somehow got hold of the Vfat partition when it should not have done. I had installed WinXP first and created three partitions... two NTFS (C:, D:) and one small Vfat to allow simple transfers between Linux and Windows (E:). I left 10 Gb unllallocated to the 8.2 install. I installed 8.2 using the automatic settings (boot and root partitions). After installation it would not boot i.e. Kernal panic (as described below.) Eventually I guessed that Grub had somehow got itself in a mess and was loaded in the 'incorrect' places. So I went into Windows and deleted the Vfat partition. This should not have affected Grub in any way... it was only a simple Windows partition...except the next reboot caused a total boot failure with Grub unable to load. This was not just a Kernel Panic but person panic aswell! Used the installation DVD to do a clean install of root and boot partitions in all the non-windows space (i.e. the original 10Gb plus the space freed up by deleting the Vfat partition). AND..... a) Grub recovered its boot menu.... b) I got my Windows XP boot option back (pheww...) c) 8.2 booted perfectly this time d) both the sound and the X server worked without problems (which had not been the case on the problem install.) So that was it... Grub had somehow got hold of the Vfat partition when it should not have done. Kernel panic Aftet Install (Suse8.2)

On a freshly installed WinXP notebook I left space on the disk for a Linux installation. After a good deal of trouble I installed Suse 8.2 to two partitions (boot and root). Grub of course took over the boot process. The first boot after the install I got a Kernel Panic because linux could not moint root fs. Tried any number of things (e.g. changing reifferfs to ext switching off acpi etc..) but always the same problem. By luck I did the following. I rebooted from the installation DVD which gave the installation DVD Grub list. The first option was the detault... boot from the hard disk. This then went into my Grub boot menu for the actual installed system... AND THIS TIME IT BOOTED WITH NO PROBLEM... of course this is not convenient... and is frustrating. Hello everyone! Is there any possibility that autoyast automatically uses the detected network cards without explicitely giving any information in the control file? The problem is, that I have one normal (100 Mbit) Card with Intel-Chipset (Module: e100) and one Gigabit-Card (e1000), but the device names may differ. Sometimes eth0 is Gigabit, sometimes eth1. So, if I give static information in the contol file, I have a problem... Another point is, that autoyast detects the cards correctly, but they appear as 'unconfigured' when I invoke yast2 after installation. Any hints? Regards, Martin

Hi ... if I could I would ... I used PXE-boot resp. pxelinux to start an autoyast installation. To do this you would have to setup an DHCP server together with tftp enabled. Hi Thanks for the info. Actually, I have copied CD images on to the system the directory structure is as follows /cdimages/disk1, /cdimages/disk2 ..... I have shared this /cdimages directory, then created a bootimage, modules1, modules2, modules3 floppy. In my installation server I have installed autoinstall module and created the profile (i.e., the xml file) and copied on the bootimage disk as autoinst.xml. Then I inserted this bootimage floppy on the where the OS has to be installed, it will read bootimage and modules1 floppy and fails to continue and starts the manual installation. I checked the modules which gets loaded during the installation, it doesn't show Network Card module. Please let me where I am going wrong. Autoinstallation Procedures

Hi All I am new to suse auto-install. Please direct me to the link where I can find step by step procedures to setup the autoinstall server and creation of boot floppy. I tried setting up an autoinstall server and also created a boot floppy, but, while boot through the floppy at a point it "Can't find the Source of Installation" and starts the manual installation. Partitioning with unknown device

I'd like to have a Control-File which works on every machine, but only found examples of control files with the <device>-Tag given explicitely. Grub Question ?

Hi All, I'm new to Linux and I just got the Suse 9.0 install on my P4 which is triple boot (Win98, Win XP & Suse9.0). I just like to find out how do I configure the grub to boot my Win XP ? When ever I boot my PC the Grub menu will pop up and I had only (Linux, Win 98, Failsafe, Memory Test) option. So when I select the Win 98 option it will always start execute the boot.ini file and I will got the Win XP boot loader option which is (Window XP Pro & Microsoft Windows) option. How do I edit the grub.conf to show the Win XP option ? Another question is I understand that Suse 9.0 had 5 cd, so I just able to install the first two cd and I'm wondering how do I install the 3rd, 4th & 5th cd ? 8.1 - Cannot Recognize HDs or CD

Have 8.1 Pro, installing on clone - D865G Intel 800FSB HT MB 2.6GHz HT Proc 2-40GB Seagate 40GB HDDs 2-256MB DDR400 Lite-On 52X CD-ROM Intel LAN Intel Graphics SoundMax Audio Have 98 (don't ask why) on partitioned portions of HDDs. Half of each HDD is not partitioned (is where SuSE should go). When attempting to install SuSU 8.1 Pro, boots from CD1 ok, but cannot mount HDDs or CD-ROM. Try CD2, same deal. Cannot install as it errors with "Cannot mount CD-ROM". Thought of copying to HDD and doing install from HDD, doh - cannot recognize HDDs. Have tried diff modes of install, but cannot get it to see drives. Is there something else need to pass to the kernel? I find it hard to believe, though a newer model MB, that 8.1 could not recognize the hardware. Yeah, Mandrake & RH install just fine on the box. Any suggestions?

Greetings, Where are installation logs stored when doing a hands-off install? My frame of reference is Solaris. If you want to keep a log from an installation task, you just put /a in front of wherever you want the log. So, logs in /var/tmp would be written to /a/var/tmp during the installation. Where are they during a SuSE install? How can I specify one if there are none? I started to just do an exec >> logfile but I don't know where the installed image is during the install. Do you have a proxy between you and the world? Does it use authentication? I installed Suse 8.1 Professional without problems. I configured the internet-access and browsing and eMailing with ISDN is no problem. But trying to use YastOnlineUpdate, I have to wait about 10 minutes for the response "Error, No connection to www.suse.de. Check your connection." (Translated from German: Fehler Keine Verbindung zu www.suse.de möglich. Bitte überprüfen Sie die Verbindung.) I didn't installed any Firewall (or is there one by default ?). Nope. The order is correct. But I presume autoyast has some priority order of disks and controllers, and maybe LVM disks are the first in this priority :-( What I'm looking for is something like '<ignore_device>/dev/sdb</ignore_device>'. It sounds to me like the install kernel may be seeing those external disks first - so maybe making them sda and sdb. I could be misreading, but I'm wondering if that's what's going on... I'm using the construction mentioned by you, but the following happens: I've got an internal SCSI disk (/dev/sda) and 2 external SCSI disks (/dev/sdb and /dev/sdc) that are configured with LVM. Now autoyast is trying to install my partitioning scheme on these external LVM disks, despite of the presence of /dev/sda! Hi All, I'm working with the 8.1, and I found some strange behavior of autoyast when merging several classes in the same time: for example: with the following examples, here is the results I get: Classe A + Classe B => content A1 and B2 <- OK Classe A + Classe C => content A1 and C2 and C3 <- OK Classe B + Classe C => content B1 and B2 and C3 <- OK Classe A + Classe B => content B1 and B2 and C3 <- ???? why not A1 + B2 + B3 ??? Anyone encounter the same problem? Anas is it a bug / known bug related to the version 8.1??? Any workaround? running the xslt merging with a script? Thx for your help. Thanks for the help. One small problem - changing the /suse/setup/descr changes the things that show up if the user chooses to "Select individual packages". I don't believe it changes the 3 items that show up in the install BEFORE that step - the one that asks "Minimal, Minimal with X, or Default". Have I misread your email, or is there another location for those definitions? Hi larry, That depends on the way you created your bootable cd. Assuming you did it with el torrito method, I suggest you put the info file in the same place as the image of your bootable floppy. for example on the Suse CD, this image is in /boot/loader/ then just copy your infofile in taht directory. I believe it works to put it in the initrd. Then you can just point to it being at /bootconfig.txt or whatever. To do this, you want to move the initrd directory somewhere, gunzip it (even though it doesn't have a .gz, it is gzipped), loop mount it, and then put the file in there. Then you can re-gzip it, move it back into the place, and burn your image. Chris Christopher R. Modifications to CD1

I have come to the conclusion that because of the differences in hardware in all my test clients, I cannot use the normal autoyast xml file methods. I have been forced to instead change default.sel to ensure my package choices. This ensures that the normal installations hardware setup systems work to make sure my clients get what their individual hardware needs. My next step is two-fold. I need to strip CD1 of all the rpm packages, and modify the boot choices so that the "Installation" options use my NFS server instead of the CD. Anyone care to point me in the right direction on that one? Secondly, during the normal install process users are asked to choose between "Minimal, Minimal with X, default " etc., etc. I need to change that to 1. Normal office user 2. J2EE Developer 3. Systems Developer 4. Kitchen sink. This is NOT in the "choose individual packages" selection, but rather the normal install menu that comes before that. Any ideas on how to change the normal install process/CD to show my menu choices instead of the regular ones? Regards, Jonathon M.
