Problems with creating custom CD

Hi, I wish to compose custom install CD so that server could be fully restored from single CD without network. I'm booting from this same CD and my boot command line looks like this: autoyast=floppy://myserverl.xml install=cdrom:// Now I'm stuck with last problem: after configuring and partitioning setup wants to mount install media but fails because CD is mounted already and busy: Could not mount the source medium. mount: /dev/hdd already mounted or /var/adm/mount busy mount: according to mtab, /dev/hdd is already mounted on /var/adm/mount. What I do wrong and how to get this setup working? -- Peeter

Automated Maintenance of SLES7

Hello, we have SLES 7 for S/390 running as virtual guests under VM and just received the first Maintenance CD. Is it possible to perform the maintenance/patch process via a batch script (including the rpm executing and everything else that yast might do) instead of performing the documented procedure (update of YOU, perform Yast to implement the maintenance) manually? I mean, consider having 100 virtual Linux servers running under VM, I wouldn't want to perform this procedure for each of the servers...) Hi, If I try to use lvm with autoinstall with SuSE 8.0, the partitions in thelvm_group will not get formatted and the hd-partition used for the pv will not get initialized. Network device found again after installation

Hi list, hi Anas, I finished my first complete auto - installation. As I am a beginner to Linux I am quite happy about that. Thanx for that great product! My problem is: I got - by now only one - installation client with a 3Com 3C905C-TX network adapter. The configuration file i use looks like this: ... <UNIQUE></UNIQUE> <device>eth0</device> <module></module> <options></options> ... After finished installation (with correctly configured and working device eth0) yast2 finds the same card again and wants me to configure it as eth1. Do You have an advice for me? partitioning

Hi all, I tried to get two disks in on vg, but instead of creating the vg with the first disk and extending it with the second one, it tried to create it again with the second one, which gave an error. Second it seems to me the installer is a lot happier if it finds a disk with an empty partition table. It barks everytime I start the install on an already partitioned disk. cutting of append-line

Hi all, I've just looked at lilo.conf which was created by autoinstall. It seems to me that it cuts off the append-line if it thinks it is to long. Is there a limit? If there is one I would have to change the order of the arguments in the autoinstall-process, that the important bits get first. Autoyast, Suse 8.0 and ISDN-Setup

hi there, i am fooling around with autoyast and everything seems to work like a charm. Right now i have some problems in setting up an isdn-card (elsa microlink pci) via the autoinst-xml-file. regular nic's are no problem but i have no clue how to set up this isdn-card. any suggestions would be appreciated :-) regards sebastian beckmann

No mouse pointer for post-installation

This is probably an install/XFree question, but here goes. I have successfully installed Suse Linux on my machine, and sorta made it a dual boot machine (I think I need to look up how LILO is supposed to operate since I can't figure out how you tell it to boot a different operating system), but in KDE I don't have a mouse pointer, so its hard to choose anything or get rid of the clutter. install not recognizing partition

Just got the Suse 8 Personal box, read through the doc and started it up. I wanted to shrink my Windows (ME) partition, but the install says my one and only partition is "unknown" and wants to format the whole thing. I don't get any other options for this question. Frankly this is a little too early in the install process to be running into problems as far as I'm concerned. (I assumed I would have problems with it recognizing that CD/RW and CD-Rom were the same thing, or something with the sound, etc.) Any suggestions? Fred Schiff (fschiff(a)mindspring.com)

Config File Options

Hi, I've got my SuSE network install server in place and it's great for installing SuSE over our network. However, it's not so good with Autoyast at the moment. I have a few questions which don't seem to be covered anywhere: - I have set the Reporting Confirmation option to "true" yet I never get any confirmation box before installation begins. Is there something I am doing wrong or is this a bug? - What happens to options that are not set in the config file? For example, if I do not specify any partitions in the config file then the installer seems to just go off and install with whatever partitions it thinks are appropriate without even consulting the user (remembering that this is will full prompting and reporting turned on). >From my point of view at least it would be a lot nicer if the Autoyast processes dropped you into the installer at the stage where you can choose options and reconfigure the system as with the manual installation unless you specifically turn this off with the config file for an unattended install. At present the Autoyast system is almost completely useless for my purpose since it just seems to choose some default options for things that are not specified in the config file. I fear that it's run *after* the (re)partitioning takes place, which is no use to me, as I'd like to save some ssh keys and similar stuff from the old partittions and copy it back after installation. Installing NIC in SuSE 8.0

I don't know if this is the correct place for this question, I got here after reading about DHCP problems in config files in the archives. I've been banging my head against the monitor for a week now trying to get a NIC to work! I've checked, double checked, and had my IT guys check, the configuration and nothing seems to be wrong. I've tried three different cards with the same results; YAST recognizes the cards, and installs the correct module for each card. But, when I ping I get a Destination Host Unreachable error. I've looked for IRQ conflicts, faulty hardware (I took a card out of a Linux box that works and put it in mine - didn't help!), and I've changed a few lines in /etc/sysconfig/network/ifcfg-eth0 , and other config files in there, to values that should of worked. Nothing seems to help. I was wondering if something happened in the installation process that is causing the NIC to not work. If anyone has any suggestions on what to try next I'd REALLY appreciate it. Thanks, Ken Graham

install floppy fails with SuSE 8.0 ftp version

We have a single AutoYaST2 install floppy that worked fine two weeks ago. Since then our NFS-server doesn't offer the DVD version anymore but a copy of SuSE's FTP version. Now our Auto- YaST2 formats the partitions but says it is unable to mount them. Any ideas what might have changed and what we can do to get it working again? Ok, this is the story: The standard configuration using YAST2 in SuSE7.3 (just after installation) didn't detected the sound card (or chipset in this case) Finally, I used "alsaconf" in text mode, and it was detected as "Intel 82820 820 Camino2 AC97" I used "gamix" in Xwindows to "unmute" the sound. Sound is playing, BUT 1- Everything is "quicker" than it should. My first experience with autoyast

Hi people, I just wanted to share my first experience. I installed ~30 machines ( two computer labs ) using autoyast. The two labs have different machines ( old 400MHz IBMs and brand new 1.7GHz DELLs ). The change in the config files was ~5 lines between platforms :-) The install went without a hinch. Only one thing had to be done manually after installing: Rebuilding the SuSE-Helpcenter database ( hint - hint ;-) Wonderful product ! :-) ( ps: where can I get that xml editor you show in the book Mr. Nashif ? ) Thanks all that have come with hints to this list Special thanks to those that gave instructions on how to create the boot-cdrom :-) Best regards, Tor Sigurdsson

Issues with custom rpms, SuSEconfig and kdm

Hello List! I have some trouble with SuSEconfig and kdm. In the xml file I define a certain value for KDM_BACKGROUND and KDM_GREETSTRING in /etc/sysconfig/displaymanager. But after finishing the autoinstall process and booting into runlevel 5 I still see the SuSE background. When I run SuSEconfig manually at least the value for background picture is written to /etc/kde3/(...)/kdmrc. The greetstring is still not changed :-( As I want to add some custom rpms with pics and scripts, I use the <extra_packages> tag in the xml file. It's quite confusing that you have to write the full rpm name without .rpm suffix. Suppressing known suffixes reminds me of another "famous" OS :-) The name of the package is backgrounds-0.0.1-1.rpm so I would assume that yast2 is smart enough to find the package if it's named just "backgrounds" in the xml file or wants to have a real full name of that package. Will It soon be possible to add users with a certain uid and gid? I'm able to add a bunch of users with a postinstall-script, but it would be nicer, if they were added from config file. Maybe even home directory or shell can be set in the xml file... Q: autoyast with NFS install root and DHCP

Hello, I am new to this list and just exploring the possibilities with the yast2 autoinstallation with suse8.0. I came across several questions that were not really clear to me after reading the documentation: I would like to configure a client to be installed as far as possible by DHCP. So the client should receive the SuSE-NFS installation source DIR and its server from DHCP and as far as possible I would like the client to get the location of the autoinst-controlfile as well from DHCP. At the moment my DHCP-server sets the nextserver and the filename options with IP-Address and PATH of the NFS server with the SUSE-CDs. Now when I start the installation and enter eg. autoyast=tftp://my-tftp-serverip/path/control.xml it seems autoyast does something different than expected. It configures the networkinterface via DHCP (gets correct values) but then complains that it cannot find the installation source. Well I had expected that the installtion source is received automatically by DHCP using the filename and nextserver-options and the the controlfile would then be received by tftp from the server given. But it is not. How can I do this? Ideally I would like to enter only something like autoyast=dhcp on the kernel commandline and then it should retrieve all information needed from the DHCP-server and start autoinstallation. Can this be done? What dhcp options are needed? A last question is, if it is possible to do a semi automatic installtion. Installing a client I always have to answer questions like Installation source, language, where to install the bootloader etc. My answers are usually always the same but on the other side the partitioning of the harddisk is different. So I would like to have defaults for most of the questions yast2 asks me during a manual installtion without beeing asked but have a way to partition the haddisk myself interactively. Does anyone know a way for this? Partition order with new autoinst-rpm

Hi, I tried the new autoinst rpms for an install. But it generates the partitions in the wrong order and creates an extended partition, even if there are only four partitions to be created. The order for the partitions (which are /, /boot, swap and lvm) should be /boot first, after that / or swap and the last should be lvm (probably inside an extended partition). using updated yast2-module-autoinst

Hi, when I use the updated yast2-module-autoinst, I get asked wether I want to install SuSE or not (it says something about: every information for installing is present, do you really want to install? Which I do, but the default is to not.). This behaviour is different to the original, where this didn't happen. Do have to put a new entry somewhere? Monitor/Sound configuration, keyboard layout, kdm

Hi, when I specify the monitor using the configuration system, this is ignored during installation. It seems that the monitor is detected via DDC and only VESA standard modes are used. Does anyone know how to fix this? The sound card is working after installation but when logging in using kde for the first time, the SuSE hardware detection comes up, detecting new sound hardware. I could turn off the hardware detection, but this isn't really a solution... The third thing I can't get to work is installing the system with language english but with a german keyboard layout. I always get the english keyboard layout when using english language. To get a german keyboard layout, I have to configure language 'Deutsch', resulting in <language>de_DE</language>. I use kdm as my login manager. After installation is done, kdm starts up, but configuration is wrong (wrong title: SuSE Linux 7.3.99, wrong list of session types). This can be fixed by an additional run of SuSEconfig after installation is done, running it in a post-script dos not work. Is there a workaround for this, except generating kdmrc manually? Web Frontend Configuration

I work in a Linux support role, administrating a very large number of Linux machines. I have just set up a central SuSE 8.0 autoinstall server from which various departments around site can install their Linux machines. Each of these departments will have a different configuration and will therefore need a different XML config file. I think it would be great if I could put something on my webpages that will instruct people around my site on how to use the server I have set up. This would include a section on the site where they could make up their own config file. I was wondering if there exists (or there are plans for) some sort of web front end that I can use to generate control files. I would guess that there is currently nothing available to do this and as such would like to make a request/suggestion that this be included in future releases? What yast2 does is something else (unfortunately log files are deleted): - 1st it partitions /dev/sda - 2nd it creates a volume group HomeVol consisting of the lvm partion on disk /dev/sda - 3rd it partitions /dev/sdb - 4th it cannot create another volume group HomeVol with the partition on /dev/sdb, because a volume group with this label does already exist Afterwards I added the corresponding configuration manually and encountered another problem: The size of the volume group was calculated by yast to be 27.3G (in the screen where volumes are assigned to volume groups), but on the next screen I was offered a maximum file system size of 27.9G for formatting. This did not work out, for obvious reasons... In addition, neither mount points are created for the swap partitions nor the swap partitions initialised. In addition, I would like to be able to configure mount points that are not assigned to devices at install time (like tmpfs, usb storage devices), but I can not find a way to configure them outside the <partition> sections. Also, on this disk configuration, lilo did not install successfully in automated mode. The initrd was created and contained the aic7xxx module for the SCSI controller, but the root device entry in /etc/lilo.conf pointed to "nil" instead of /dev/sda6. Options for bootloader

Hello, I would like to install the bootloader with default settings during automated install, except for kernel parameters. So I tried <bootloader> <parameters>apm=off acpi=off</parameters> </bootloader> but that does not work as expected (i.e. the parameters do not make their way in the lilo.conf file). The reason I want to use default settings is the fact, that I do not see any possibility to determine in advance which partition will become "/". At least I could not find a way to specify partition numbers. Any hints on how to do that? Sleep 1 when calling yast on client

Hi, when calling yast on an autoinstalled client, the final script execution is taking ages. A process sleep 1 is running with changing process id. We are not talking about the final script execution after an autoinstallation. Default gateway not set

Hi, the default gateway is not set, when autoinstalling a system. Entry in xml-file exists. I'm not sure about that. I thought that if I specified a directory instead of a concrete profile, the installer would download the profile whose name is the ip address of the station in hex. But, anyway, I've tried also specifying the concrete profile and the results were the same. I think it's problem with the installer: if you get the profile using http it expects to perform a network based installation, and if you select a cd-rom based installation it doesn't expect to download the profile from the net (when booting from diskette it doesn't even ask you for the net modules disk). Getting profile with http on custom CD

Hi, I would like to create a custom installation CD that gets the profile from a http server, but I'm having several problems with the append parameters on my isolinux.cfg file: If I use "append initrd=initrd ramdisk_size=65536 autoyast=http://193.146.185.99/profiles/ instmode=cdrom" the installer doesn't find the profiles, although the are perfectly accessible on the server. I've tried also using "install=cdrom://" or "install=file://" instead of "instmode=cdrom", but the problem persisted. If I use "append initrd=initrd ramdisk_size=65536 autoyast=http://193.146.185.99/profiles/" (omitting the install or instmode parameter), the installer tries to locate a network installation server with a DHCP query and doesn't use the CD as installation media. creation of a single boot floppy: - create the bootfloopy and the first module floppy - delete everything but "linux", "message" and "sysconfig.cfg" from the bootdisk (most likely, you will replace linux, too) - copy /floppy/initrd from the first module floppy to harddisk - rename initrd on harddisk to initrd.gz and decompress it - mount initrd from harddisk (with -o loop) - copy the modules 3c59x.o, aic7xxx.o, cramfs.o and reiserfs.o (or a filesystem module of you choice) from /lib/modules/2.4.18-4GB/... to <initrd-mountpoint>/modules - unmount initrd and compress it - copy initrd.gz to /floppy/initrd. Most likely you will run out of disk space! - Build your own kernel. You also can do "make cloneconfig" and disable things like ppp, video4linux, sound, usb etc (see my other posting "single boot floppy" from 29.05.). Ensure that the modules will still work or copy the modules to initrd (see above) - copy this kernel to /floppy/linux - unmount floppy and do "syslinux /dev/fd0" to make the floppy bootable For Information about control file on NFS read the documentation.
