Problem with HP Laserjet 1020 printer in SuSe 10 64 bit

HI I just bought HP Laser Jet 1020 and it is not working properly in my SuSe 10 64 bit box. At first there was no driver at all for this printer so I downloaded the driver from http://foo2zjs.rkkda.com/ and successfully installed it and followed the steps described in http://www.linuxprinting.org/show_printer.cgi?recnum=HP-LaserJet_1020 for SuSe 10 After installing the driver I rebooted my machine run yast2 this time there was the driver every thing auto detected prefectly , infact I hit Test print page and get the prefectly printed test page but the problem start then After quiting from yast2 I opened a simple text file with kate and tried to print it , but nothing happened , infact my printer light started blinking. After that if I try to print some thing the printer light start blinking , infact restarting the printer does not do any good. The only way I can print again is to remove the printer reboot my system and install it again. Hello Well, I think that I have a good new about solving the problem. It seems that the kernel requires the following parameter : noapic. The laptop has been "working" since last evening .... and this morning it is still alive with a mouse and sound device working fine :-) !!!!! So it must be tested on a longer period in order to validate the option. I think that it is on the right way :-) The system behaviour when the problem occured suggested me that it was related to interruptions => apic. And it was proposed on a "64 bits linux" forum to use "noapic" for some distros (Mandrake for example). And this morning, after reinstallation of the nVidia driver (8178) I got no full freeze during 15 minutes !! Wonderfull, 2 problmes solved with noapic ! So, I suggest you try this option "noapic" at boot. You will tell me if your USB problem has disappeared :-). Question : why is "noapic" required for kernel >=2.6.11 and not for 2.6.8 and before ? Like you, I am not a specialist of the Linux kernel :-). I can see that your laptop is very similar, with the main chipset nForce3 150. Almost same laptop .... same problem. About PCMCIA, it was very hard to get it working perfectly. I tried several values for range and port in config.opts file. In fact, this is WinXP that helped me to find the right values : I took the values given by XP and put it in the config.opts file : bingo !! It works : modem card and network FA411 card. Hereafter my config file. With 32 bits kernel, it is easier :-) : no tuning ! Altough I do not have a solution to your USB problems, below I try to answer some other questions you posted. I have attached the output of 'lspci -v' run as root. I have the nVidia chipset and the 64 MB nVidia 440 togo card (although, mysteriously, it shows as 32 MB in lspci). Our laptops do not have identical hardware, but pretty similar. With earlier versions of 64-bit SuSE I had to run 'setpci -s 0:a.0 SUBORDINATE_BUS=0A' to make it see the PCMCIA. I will refer you to this web site about my laptop, where you can find other configuration files, if that my help: http://lists.pcxperience.com/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/linuxr3000 There is also a very useful wiki page: http://prinsig.se/weekee/ PCMCIA setup and example configuration files are discussed extensively in the above wiki page. Bear in mind that starting with SuSE 10 (and, if I remember correctly, 9.3) radical changes in handling hot-pluggable events were put into effect. Whereas before 9.3 USB was handled by hotplug and PCMCIA --separately-- by cardctl, now ALL hotplug events (USB _AND_ PCMCIA included together) are handled by hald ("hald" probably stands for "Hardware Abstraction Layer Dæmon," but don't quote me on this). Kernels after,I think, 2.6.11 got better at detecting devices in subordinate busses. I am not sure whether the 'setpci' command I described above is needed any more, but I retained it in '/etc/rc.d/boot/local'. Also, please note that as of SuSE 10 (and perhaps SuSE 9.3) the 'cardctl' command has been changed to 'pccardctl'. The hot-pluggability system seems to be in a state of flux. As I said, I observed subtle changes to the syntax of the /etc/udev/*.rules files going from SuSE 9.3 to SuSE 10, most notably the use of double equals ( == ) for comparisons. I hope all this helps. Hello CF : Your laptop may have the same hardware as this one of my mine. There is probably a chipset nVidia go150 with a video card gForce. I put the hardware profile at the end of this mail. That can explain our problem with USB. Before SuSE 9.3 64 bits, I tried the SuSE 10.0 64 bits : bad experience (no PCMCIA working, full freeze with graphic nVidia driver, freeze of X server when reading DVD, ...). So I went back to 9.3. In parallel I work with a SuSE 9.2 64 bits without major problems. With 9.3, the full freeze with nVidia driver is still present (do you use nVidia driver). A way for understanding what happens is to use a 64 bits live-distrib (Kunbuntu ?). If no problem with USB for a similar kernel, all comes from SuSE kernel (to my mind). Colin : About SuSE 9.0 AMD64, I used it in the past on this same Asus laptop and USB worked almost fine : it only failed with some USB2 devices (for example my Sony H1 or some memor key). I have a somewhat similar problem with my Compaq Presario 3140 AMD64 laptop and my 64-bit SuSE 10 . If I plug and unplug my cellphone (which looks like a dialup modem, utilizing the module cdc_acm) a few times, my whole USB system just dies. No hotplug events are recognized from any USB device (not just the cellphone) until I reboot. I have not tried the 32-bit kernel. Upgrading to 2.6.14 from the apt-get did not fix the problem. Can hardware be excluded as a cause for these problems? CF

Hello After Knoppix 32 bits, I tried the live-CD Kubuntu 5.10 AMD64. All right during the whole boot up to KDE session (3.4.3). This is based on a kernel 2.6.12. After several minutes of use, I lost the mouse !!!!! I plugged it in an other USB port => mouse available again. But in the same USB port, not possible to get a working mouse. It appears with such a test that there is a serious problem with kernel >=2.6.11 64 bits for a given hardware based on chipset nVidia nForce3 150. A user of Compaq Presario 3140 laptop (almost equivalent to my laptop) has a similar problem but with SuSE 10.0 64 bits. This is a kernel 2.6.13 ... For gurus and linux experts, what's new in kernels > 2.6.8 and leading to such a problem at USB level ? Regards Pascal

Hello I have just investigated this problem wtih USB mouse. There are four USB ports on my laptop. After the first loose of mouse, I plugged it in other port and it became available again. In the same USB port : no way. After the second loose, I tried an other port. I did this until to have no more use of mouse. At the step, I could see that the red led of mouse was off : none of USB ports supplied current for device. And the ethernet port was down at the same moment. And probably the sound was off too (like a previous time during a DVD reading). I tried a Knoppix live-distrib, a 3.8.1 one : there is the same kernel 2.6.11 ... but this is a 32 bits version. All worked fine. I think that the SuSE 2.6.11 kernel 64 bits has a big problem of reliability in device management. I will tried a live-distrib 64 bits as soon as possible for a better comparison. ATI driver hangs the machine when switching users

Hi, sorry for the double-post, but I do not know if this is 64-bit specific, as I do not have 32-bit intsallation to test. Anyway: SuSE 10 x86_64 kernel 2.6.13-15.8-default xorg - 6.8.2-100.2 ati prop. driver - 8.22.5-x86_64 (tried 8.21.7 - same problem) videocard - ATI X800 - ExpressPCI KDE - 3.5.1 Level "a" The problem: Using the switch user option of KDE to start a new kdm for a second user to login works OK, The user can login. But if then I try Ctrl-Alt-F7 to return to the other session, or when I close the new session, or if I switch to virtual terminal (Ctrl-ALt-1..6), and try to get back to any X one (Alt7-8) it badly hangs the machine. No remote access either, so I can not kill the X server. Looks like the problem is with the ati proprietary driver, as if I uninstall it and use the generic one, everything works just fine. Do someone have such a problem? Is it isolated only to the 64bit version, or it happen with the 32 bit as well? Any suggestions how to solve/or at least debug and try to solve the problem? Hi, as i have seen on the SUSE server there are binaries for Xorg 6.9, but only for i386-architecture. For there are drivers for my build-in card only available with this version (unichrome drivers) i would like to ask if someone can provide binaries for the X86_64 architecture. Would be nice. Hi I bought a new printer HP Laser Jet 1020 but unable to configure it under SuSe 10. Yast is not showing any entry for HP Laser Jet 1020 but , 1015 and 1022. None of them worked. Okay, did a lot of digging around and I found a few things. Checked /etc/mdadm.conf and found that it had the old data for a previous RAID and not the current info. Fdisk shows all three drives with an ID of 'fd', for a Linux RAID Autodetect. Any ideas on how I can have device md0 start at boot time? Many thanks, James James
