[Announce] 9.2 AMD64 Install CD with New Kernel

I'm currently uploading to ftp.suse.com (will soon be also on its mirrors) at: ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/people/aj/PatchCD The ISO is called: SuSE-9.2-PatchCD-1-RC3-CD1.iso If you have experienced installation problems with our 9.2 DVD, then download this CD and boot from it. It will ask you then for "CD1", and just insert the DVD at that point. During installation it will load packages from CD1 several times... This PatchCD has two advantages: * Installation with a new kernel. If you had problems installing with the DVD, please try it this way. * All the updated packages are installed directly. You can also download the CD and start "PatchCD" in YaST to only install the updated packages. Note the packages and the kernel are from before Christmas, so we have some more updates out since then... New BIOS for CELSIUS V810 released today

Hi, Today our system test department released a new BIOS for the CELSIUS V810 dual opteron workstation which should fix the kernel panic issues that we had with kernels >= 2.6.8. I already sent out disk images to all customers I knew who are suffering from that problem. It will probably take some time until the BIOS shows up on our download page, so if you urgently need the new BIOS please send me a short mail and I'll mail back the BIOS image (gzip'ed, size 564KB). Otherwise (if its not so urgent) please use our official download pages at http://www.fujitsu-siemens.com/support/downloads_1.html where the BIOS should show up in the next days. dial on demand in suse 9.2...

I realise this isn't amd64 related but it's definitely suse. (Sorry it's slightly off topic, but it might be an issue with amd64 suse (probably is) so isn't entirely) Recently we updated our gateway... We had been using 7.2, using the wvdial.dod/diald method... But the hardware it was installed on was a bit crap, constant lockups, and when a new error involving ide timeouts started, we decided to switch to a new machine, thinking, let's install the latest suse on this one. So far, dial on demand has been a nightmare. No longer is the wvdial.dod script available, now we seem to be forced to rely on the smpppd daemon and q/k/cinternet. At first, it wouldn't even start at bootup. It took a while to locate the option to replace in the ifcfg-modem0 script. It was set to manual. not ideal... Now I know it's onboot, that issue's cleared, but, and this is a big but... With the old setup, the modem would dialup even after being turned off all night... Now? It seems the process dealing with the modem just terminates if it can't find it when it tries to connect... Is there anything? Any option, any setting, any program that I can use to setup this thing to work as before? Just dial, ON DEMAND, whether the modem's been on for a few minutes or off all weekend? If all else fails I'll just setup a cron job to prod the modem with a cinternet -A command every 10 minutes or so, but that should not be necessary. Again, sorry about the mild off-topicness of this, but I'm subscribed to this one, and having poked my head around the door of the spam infested suse-e list, I decided this was the best place.

top command doesn't display all processors running

Dear List, I am writting OpenMP parallel programs which use all the processors of my Quad Opteron baby! Now, suppose that all the 4 processors are running the same application. Typing #top I would expect to see 4 processes with 99.9% CPU usage. Instead of that I see only one! That is in my SuSE 9.2 AMD64. The same thing in SuSE 9.0 with icc compiler and OpenMP displays in top all the OMP_NUM_THREADS exported in bash by #export OMP_NUM_THREADS=4 even in a uni-processor pentium4. Best MP3 Player?

Hi Folks-- I went out today and bought a Creative Nomad Zen Xtra, which turned out to be a mistake. Naturally, it comes with a bloated proprietery Windows application, which managed to entirely nuke VMware with repeated BSODs until finally I had to restore the VM files from backup. Gnomad didn't seem to like 64 bits and gave numerous errors during compile so no joy there either. I'm taking the thing back tomorrow. What I'd like ideally, is something that I could simply plug into the USB port and have it recognized as just any other external drive. Is there anyone here with an MP3 player they're happy with, that's supported under SuSE 9.2/64? Thanks!

Memcopy performance SLES9

Hi, Using the attached program (mcopy_time.c) we noticed a considerable performance difference between SLES 8 and SLES 9. A 2.2 GHz Opteron would give the following results (both times executed on the same machine): *) Compiled against SLES 8 glibc: $ ./mcopy_time 2200 1000 1048576 Memory to memory copy rate = 2098.644531 MB / sec. Block size = 1048576 *) Compiled against SLES 9 glibc: $ ./mcopy_time 2200 1000 1048576 Memory to memory copy rate = 1179.235596 MB / sec. Block size = 1048576 I found that the problem is caused by the AMD-specific patches contained in the source RPMs. If I apply x86-64-opt-mem.diff from glibc-2.2.5-233 (SLES 8) and apply it against glibc-2.3.3-98.38 (SLES 9) and at the same time do *NOT* apply glibc-2.3.3-amd64-string.diff (originally contained in glibc-2.3.3-98.38) performance under SLES9 is identical to SLES 8 (mcopy_time yields 2100 MB/sec. under SLES 9 with my patched glibc). I had to modify x86-64-opt-mem.diff a little so it would apply correctly against glibc-2.3.3. I also found that simply not applying glibc-2.3.3-amd64-string.diff increases performance slightly (without applying any older SLES 8 patches), to about 1550 MB/sec. Has anybody else witnessed this performance drop with SLES9? Can anybody see a problem with my solution? Everything seems to be working fine, I'd just like to make sure I didn't miss anything. Attached you can find the patches. I split the patch into 2 files for now, because it was easier to create them that way. They are both based on x86-64-opt-mem.diff (from SLES 8), modified to apply against glibc 2.3.3. x86_64-string-new.diff adds new files that do not exist in glibc 2.3.3, x86_64-string-modified.diff modifies already existing files. XMMS and Windows

I am not sure if this problem is a 64b problem. I have asked on several other forums and I have not had any response. Maybe someone on this list has seen this before. I have a Windows XP computer that I use mostly for storage. It has a large hard drive and lots of room. I have a wireless connection from my laptop to this computer. I am using SuSE 9.2 64b on my laptop. I cannot play any of the music that is stored on the windows computer with XMMS. When I try the title and time show in the scroll window and my onscreen dispaly shows playing for 2 seconds and then shows stopped. I am able to play these music files using MPlayer, so I think my problem is with my XMMS. I have all the XMMS rpms installed. Before I had this 64b laptop I had an older Compaq LT and had SuSE 9.1 installed. With that setup I could play the songs from the windows computer without any problem and I don't remember doing anythingspecial to make that happen, but it was a long time ago. XMMS plays all the files on my localhost without any problem at all. I have even tried putting the firewall down and the results were the same. David
