firewall settings for VNC?

Hi- I don't seem to be able to logon to suse 10.0 from windows VNC unless I run as root and turn of the firewall completely. Can some one point me to a reference on how to set firwall in 10.0 to allow remote access from local network? Thanks Robert (Bob) L. Hey Mark, If I limit the mempry to < 8 GB, and 4 cpus, the system will boot, but it cannot load the network devices. I get the "SIOCSIFFLAGS: Device or resource busy" message when the network trys to start and load the tg3 drivers. I have varying degrees of success (or failure :) depending on whether the MTRR settings are Discrete or Continuous, and Memhole Mapping is Disabled. Haven't had much luck this afternoon trying to load the OSS version of Suse 10, either. Booting "noapic module=sata_nv mem=4096M maxcpus=2" starts the install, but I can never get the Ethernet devices to come up... And yes, the errors seem to change depending on the amount of memory I tell the system to use, so there may be a problem with the big memory (though I think I had Suse 9.2 running on an 8-way 128 GB machine with the IWILL motherboard/daughterboard combo with no graphics. Hey, Kevin. For an 8 processor, 8 core machine, you should be able to get SL9.3 to boot on it with the "maxcpus=6" option. USB storage (flash sticks) sloooow

Hi, USB sticks or MP3 players are mounted synchronous by default. This is "safe", but slow as hell. I've two different sticks, both incredibly slow with the synchronous option. If you do a remount async /media/usbdisk, performance is acceptable (I mean the sequence "cp some megabytes; sync", not the cp alone, which is to finish much faster, anyway). It's also healthier for the Flash memory. The reason should obvious: A sync write on a FAT file system means that for each block copied, there's a file allocation pointer to be updated. For the flash controller, a single FAT pointer update means "erase a page, copy old content to the new page" and probably update some other structures. The doctor tells you: Don't do that. Flash pages stand a limited number of erases (10k/100k) per block, so the memory degrades quite fast doing it that way. You should do all updates of a single flash page in one go if possible. Note that you can't know the size of the flash page, since that's hidden by the memory controller. It can be considerably larger than the FAT block granularity, either (so the way cp determines the block size might be "wrong", too). Now the fix is "simple": mount it async by default, and add some "remove external drive" button that does an umount on the node. There actually is something like that in KDE, but it doesn't work (you can't umount as normal user, since the hotplug device is not in /etc/fstab). What I'd like to know: a) how do I make it mount async by default? problem with libgnomeuimm 32 bit and 64 bit

I'm using the Eval Edition of Suse 10.0. Now I've encountered a problem with the libgnomeuimm library and some other ..mm libraries, too. There is a 64 bit and a 32 bit version, but if I install them via Yast then both packages have exactly the same name. So can I install only one version of them at a time? I wanted to use my AMD64 system for building the 64 bit and 32 bit version of an application and it would be convenient if I could've installed both developer packages at the same time. Other libraries like libgnomeui have a libgnomeui and a libgnomeui-32bit rpm package by the way. Regards, Detlef

hanging system

Hi I own an Asus L5000 with a NVidia GeForce FX Go5650 graphics card. Things ran pretty well in the Suse 9.3 days, but not so well with Suse 10. First, I don't think that ACPI is running properly (I can't check the battery state, for instance. When exausted, it just switches off without a warning). But the worst came yesterday. I installed the nvidia driver from YOU, with the result that I have much better X, but now the system hangs very often (from every half an hour to just a few minutes) forcing me to do a cold reboot. I suspect that it is related with the power management problem, but I really don't know why. Could someone advise me into the right directions, please? Thanks. Screen Corruption Suse 9.3 AMD64 Nvidia GeForce 6200

Help!! I'm having big problems with my NVidia GeForce 6200TC-Card on Suse 9.3 on a AMD64-System (2GB Memory). A few minutes after login, the desktop looses all colour and the background of all X-Windows changes to an erratic coloured blurr. It even happens under the screensaver - and: No, my 3D-acceleration is disabled. Sometimes it is possible to free windows by shifting another one over the desktop, but even then the colours creep up to fill the visible gap. The only way to get a fresh X is to restart the X-Server (login). As I'm running a nv-linux.o-1.0-7167 driver, I've tried to download the newest driver from NVidia, but YOU fails to work. By direct downloading the NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-1.0-8174-pkg2.run I got 4 different package-sizes in 4 trials. As a little search on the web brought up more than 4 other people with the same problem, it seems to be systematic with this hardware. Is there any known patch or work-around for this problem? If yes - and I very hope there is - where can I get it? I know that there is always the last possibility of changing the graphics card, by who tells me how to avoid the same failure? thanks and looking forward for any help Peter

Firefox 1.5 speed issue

Does anyone else noticed strange speed behavior on firefox 1.5? I mean loading a page (rendering), changing tabs of even scrolls the speed is like i have old 486 machine. Strange and vexing problems with the 'su' command; other issues

Hello board. I've posting a lot of questions recently... My latest problem has to do with the 'su' command. After I issue 'su' (with or without a user name), the computer pauses for a few seconds and, WITHOUT PROMPTING FOR A PASSWORD, it gives me 'su: incorrect password' error message! This appears to be a wiedespread problem. Everything that depends on su (e.g. YAST) fails because of that. Last night, in a desperate attempt to figure out why my SAMBA was not working, I unistalled the SAMBA packages and tried re-istalling them from the apt-get repositories. I got all kinds of errors, like size mismatches and bad cpio. (Are the packagers that careless? I updated all the rpm keys, but just about EVERY SAMBA-related package I tried to istall from apt-get gave me errors!) So, now my SAMBA is broken. I am not sure whether these two problems are related. I am running SuSE 10 and I have upgraded the kernel to the "SuSEfied" 2.6.14-3. Everything worked fine after my kernel upgrade, so I doubt my problems are due to the kernel upgrade. Why would broken SAMBA packages affect 'su'? I think I have two independent problems. To compound the problem, I managed to roll my chair over my SuSE 10 DVD, for which I paid US$50; I did not physically break it, but the streaks apparently rendered it useless! Besides shelling out another US$50 and waiting for long downloads, do I have any other options? I still have my SuSE 9.3 DVDs. I guess when it rains, it pours! TIA for any help you can offer. CF

I have an TYAN (S4881/B4881) 8-way system with 128 GB of memory anthat I am trying to load Suse 9.3 (or 9.2, or RHEL 3 Update 5) on. I cannot get the system to install with the 64-bit install. It always fails on trying to mount the root disk. However, the 32 bit installation goes with no complaints. Only problem, is it loads the i586 bigsmp kernel, and DHCP, USB, etc. don't work.
