System to slow and to hot?

Hello, I've some problems with the following System: 1x QDI K8V800-6AL Board 2x 512 MB DDR RAM PC-400 1x Samsung 160GB IDE Platte 1x LiteOn 48x CD-Brenner 1x BenQ DW800 DVD-Brenner 1x Adaptec 3940UW Kontroller 1x Pioneer SCSI DVD-ROM 1x ATI Radeon 7500 Grafikkarte 1x 2,88MB Floppy System is running SuSE 9.1 with all online Updates applied. Problem 1. If seti@home is running, the System reboots after max. 10 minutes with a warning message like "CPU temperatur 60 C stoping system / reboot" (not exactly, I am currently not working at that machine) There is no Option in Mainboard Bios to set a "critical temperatur". So *where* I have to search to solve this problem? Any hints? Problem 2. The System is slow. Very, very slow. It takes *minutes* to open a terminal under KDE or any other WM. Copying dist DVDs to hard disk

I'd like to reduce the chance of damaging my original dvds, so I thought I'd copy the contents to an area on one of my hard disks and run any installs I need from there. Do I need to set up any particular file structure for that, or just basically copy everything exactly as it's set up on the dvd to a folder? Once I've done that, how does YaST know to look there instead? Sorry about the newbieness...thanks! <mc>

GIMP2 for AMD64

I may be asking if a caveman can sing opera, but are there GIMP-2.x packages available for SLES8 AMD64? I have GIMP-1 packages, but gimp2 has been around long enough now that I'm starting to get jealous. Is it safe to install the ATI drivers "fglrx-4.3.0-3.9.0.i386.rpm" onto a machine running the 64bit version of SuSE? Thanks Jason

rxvt terminal crashes in SuSE 9.1

I much prefer rxvt over xterm. But there is a glitch with SuSE 9.1, and AMD Opteron chips. If I right-click, once or twice, on the window, rxvt closes with the error rxvt: XError: Request: 18 . 0, Error: 2 Such right clicks are often finger errors. Also, I cannot highlight text for cut and paste without a crash. This is extremely frustrating. This problem does not occur on standard 32-bit chips. I also don't remember it happening on SuSE 9.0 (with the 2.4.21 kernel). Please help. Thanks.

Fibre Channel HBA Support...

We're considering using an Opteron-based system as a file-serving head to a SAN built around a Brocade SilkWorm 3250 switch. According to Brocade's Compatibility Matrix at: http://www.brocade.com/products/pdf/BrocadeCompatibilityMatrix%5f4%5f27%5f0… the Emulex LightPulse LP9002L fibre channel HBA at: http://www.emulex.com/products/fc/lp9002l.html works and is (or was) supported under SuSE 7.0. Has anyone used this or another HBA successfully in a similar environment under a recent SuSE release? If so, would you share your experiences and recommendations? I checked for the LightPulse HBA specifically and fibre channel HBA support in general in SuSE's component database, but couldn't find anything. Thanks! Roy

compiling 32bit programs

Is it possible to use the (32bit) Free Pascal Compiler to compile 32bit programs? It seems to do syntax checking OK, but then produces errors at the assembly stage, I assume this is because the assembler is 64bit. Yea it used to work so I am not sure if it was a kernel update or what. Suse sees it just fine if I go to yast hardware it shows it as a dvd+rw but if I do a cdrecord -scanbus only one drive shows up. Frage eines Newbie zur Netzwerkkonfiguration

Hi an die Linux-Gemeinde! Bin seit heute glücklicher User von SuSE Linux 9.1 Professional für AMD64, habe allerdings ein nicht unwesentliches Problem. Ich habe ein MSI K8N Mainboard mit Nvidia Nforce3 250Gb Chipsatz. Ich verwende den eingebauten Gigabit-Netzwerk-Controller, allerdings findet YaST diesen nicht. Hab mir dann die Treiber-Sources von der Nvidia-Homepage geladen (habs mit .rpm und .src.rpm versucht) allerdings funktioniert das nicht. Wenn ich es in YaST einbinden möchte wird nichts angezeigt und die Option über rpmbuild wie in der Dokumentation von Nvidia angegeben gibt nur Fehlermeldungen aus (z.B.: "user buildmeister does not exist..."). Da ich wie gesagt ein absoluter Newbie bin steh ich momentan an, da ich leider auch nichts durch eine Suche in verschiedenen Foren in Erfahrung bringen konnte. Mein Kernel ist übrigens der Default-Kernel (2.6.4-52). Ich hoffe jemand von euch kann mir helfen. Mfg, Flo Floimair
