Machine freezes without (apparent) reason...

Hello, I apologize in advance if the subject I'm about to discuss is not directly related to SuSE Linux. We have in our lab an Opteron machine (Tyan S2882 motherboard, latest BIOS version, 2 Opteron 242 processors and 2 GB of memory) running SuSE Linux 9.0. The system freezes after several hours of being functioning without sending any message, it just stops responding until it is rebooted. I suppose there is a hardware problem but before sending the machine for maintenance I would like to know the cause of the problem. I have searched the suse-amd64 list for related problems, somebody pointed out in a similar case that maybe the memory is damaged so I tested the memory using memtest86 but it did not find errors. Broken depencies

I've encountered the following broken depencies when trying to install the latest kernel-default, from SuSE apt4rpm repocitories (9.0 x86_64). Perhaps someone can tell me, what the program being referenced is? The following packages have unmet dependencies: kernel-default: PreDepends: /sbin/update-modules.dep but it is not installable E: Broken packages

video editing on suse 9.0 amd64

hello all, I tried to do some Video editing (capture from my DV-camera, cut the film, export to mpeg and burn on dvd) on my suse9.0 amd64 box (uname -ir: 2.4.21-209-default x86_64). what I tried is: - running mainactor 5.1 beta: runs, but no possibility to capture - running mainactor 5.2 beta: possibility to capture, but stops with segmentation fault - running kino 0.6.4: runs, can capture [:-)))], but can't export to mpeg. After some research, I found that the export problem caused by the fact the suse mjpegtools rpm lacks some important files (mp2enc, mpeg2enc,...) according to license problems for suse to put them on the dvd. For my 32-Bit Suse9.0 Linux I found complete mjpegtools rpm's at http://packman.links2linux.de/index.php4?action=154&vn=2 With this rpm I was able to export my videos in my 32-Bit Suse9.0. So here are my questions: Does anybody know where to find a complete mjpegtools rpm for suse9.0 amd64 ? Or have I to compile it by my self ? If I have to compile it: is it only: 'configure...make...install' or much complicated ? regards detlef oertel

Similar problem here. Arima HDAMA, dual 246, 8 gig, LSI Megaraid SCSI, and SLES 8. Blackdown 64 bit 1.4 JVM (others tried, but too numerous to mention) Jakarta-Tomcat 4.1 Apache, JSP, servlets, etc. Now working, but still gets java segfaults in /var/log/messages (enought that it is now linked to a file on a partition with more space). We have been working on this for a couple of months, but still do not have a fix. Some things have helped: ulimit -s 2048 (for the shell starting Tomcat) Memory reduced in Tomcat => -Xms256 -Xmx 1024 (as far as I know this should do nothing in 1.4, but it seems to help) Al, please stay in contact as to what you find out on this. Our application is running, but I want to get rid of this problem. Thanks for the reply. The system has already been extensively load tested under suse 9.0(2.4 64 bit kernel) and memtest + and is absolutely stable. As a side note, we've discovered that the blackdown jvm's are 4 times faster for our app than the sun jvm - there seems to be something wrong with the sun jvm's smp support. However the blackdown 64 bit jvm has a memory leak that kills it after a couple of days of load testing so we use the 32bit one. Al Joel Wiramu Pauling wrote: >Pays to read through.... OpenGL games randomly crash computer

Whenever I try to run Unreal Tournament 2004 I have a 1/3 chance of having my computer instantly reboot after the splash screen. Trying to run Neverwinter Nights gives me a 1:8 crash ration. I don't know what logs I might look at, or what I might be able to do to solve this problem. Any thoughts? ~Steve

I have finally figured out the problems I was having, and witnessed insanity in the process. The patient is a MSI K8D Master F/FT board with dual Opteron 244 on which I attempted to install an Adaptec 29160 SCSI HBA and SLES 8. It turns out that the release that comes on the CDs (32 or 64 bits) simply will not boot up on that board with the BIOS that comes with it if I installed it with the 29160 also installed. The installtion procdure recognizes the 29160, and configures it into the initrd file. If I installed SLES 8 without the card installed, there is still a chance that the OS will hang on bootup. Odd that the install procedure seems to work with it just fine, and the "safe" mode boots up. I had to get a special BIOS from MSI just to get SLES 8 to boot up more often than it hangs, so there is some incompatibility with this OS and the K8D Master board. The added confusion comes in where the Adaptec HBA would not work properly with the new BIOS; it would just hang up at its BIOS start up. This happens with two boards that I tried; Adaptec 29160 and 3ware Escalade 7506. So here is the sequnce of events that worked for me: First install the OS with the HBA installed using the old BIOS. This puts the configuration for the HBA into initrd so that when the system is working, it will automatically configure the HBA into the system. Now the system will hang on bootup, so I need to pull out the HBA and install the new BIOS so the OS would boot. Then use YOU to update the OS so it gets the updated drivers to handle the board properly (the ISAPnP configurator patch seems to be key here). Then re-install the old BIOS before plugging the HBA back into the system, and the next time it boots, everything comes up as expected. Thanks to Joe Bedard for pointing out the need for GCC 2.95 with the 32 bit version of Oracle 9i. We must have had it configured properly at one time, as we did install one data base successfully. However, we were informed by Oracle that there was some bug with an early release of SP3 for SLES8/x86 that did something to the GCC 2.95 libraries, and we suspect this is why we were no longer able to install any more data bases after our upgrade. The upgrade did fix the hang on boot issue, as well as the addressing of disks greater than 1 TB. Joe also mentioned that the 64 bit version of Oracle 9i has been certified on SLES8/x86_64, so we started toward that direction, which was what I wanted to do when I started this a couple weeks ago, and will abandon the 32 bit SLES8. I have just finished the basic installation of the 64 bit SLES 8 off the CDs, and will try to do the online update as soon as the OS lets me connect to www.suse.com. For some reason, when I first start up the system, it just does not want to connect to any web servers outside of my immediate subnet. It's not a routing issue, as I can ping the web server just fine, and I get a rejection message when I try to telnet to it, but Mozilla just hangs when I try to make a connection. So of course YOU does not work during this time. Then some random time later, the web access just magically starts to work all by itself. eyc PS: I wonder if SuSE will give me a refund for the SLES8 X86 after I've held on to it for so long?
