Opensuse 11.2 and Orca problems

Hello all, Just for your info, I decided to try installing the latest development version of Opensuse 11.2 using Blinux just to see if the issues with Orca firefox and openoffice were resolved. After installation was complete I booted into Gnome. First, I was not able to login with just typing in my username and password. One needs to hit tab once to focus the username. One can then press enter and enter the password. After I had logged in, I pressed Alt-F2 and typed orca but nothing happened. I then switched to the console and Orca is installed. but if I try to set up orca form the command line I get a lots of error messages so just want to tell you that there's no idea on installing this. I have removed it and now I am reinstaling Debian again. Blinux and USB displays

Hi all, OK, so I have done a few tests here changing my Brailliant 40 display to use the Handytech protocol over USB. It works fine if I connect it to my serial port, but not over USB. The installation program seems to boot just fine, but no braille output over USB. So USB doesn't seem to work, or isn't the Handytech protocol supported on USB? If so, that would be very strange. BRLTTY in openSUSE 11.1?

Hello all, It was some time since I posted to this list, but I have a question. Blinux doesn't support that many braille displays and it's very frustrating that one needs to have a serial display for installing openSUSE. Well, one could use the Live CD, but I prefer braille. When I last checked the repositories I could not find BRLTTY. Has this been added or are there any planns to eventually replace the old Blinux with BRLTTY? Is anyone else interested in this as well? Installed Opensuse 11.1 Beta5

Hi all, I have now installed Opensuse and I have also been able to get Orca up and running wiht braille output. I noticed that BRLTTY is used, but where is that config file? i cannot find brltty.conf since I want to change to another braille display. Also, I am not able to accept the licence agreement in Firefox. I hope that this will be fixed for the final release of openSUSE. How to disable contracted braille

Hi all, Finally I managed to get the installatio nprogrma to work with my Humanware brailliant 40 display. I changed the protocol to Handytech and then everything went just fine. However, there seem to be some contracted braille which makes it really hard for me to read. How do I disable that? Installing Opensuse 11.1 with braille

Hi all, I have just subscribed to this list. I have downloaded the 11.1 Beta5 installation DVD and I have pressed F9 and selected installation. However, none of my braille displays seem to be detected. Will I need to do something else after I have pressed enter on installation or should BRLTTY detect the display and start the installation program? Audio Walk through now available. install OpenSuSE 11 independently.

Hello all, Some of you may have heard of me, others ..... maybe not. I've recorded a number of audio walk throughs in the past aiming to guide new users through the installation, configuration and use of differing Linux distributions. The walk throughs are mainly aimed at new users however in the case of this one, I am hoping that as many people will listen as possible to highlight the exceptional work the OpenSuSE developers have done with this release to make it the most accessible release ever! The walk through demonstrates the new text to speech functionality found in the boot menu. Simply boot the Gnome Live CD or the DVD, wait for the beep to signify that the boot menu is displayed, press f9 and you will instantly hear speech feedback when you arrow through the options. OpenSuSE 11, boot from hard disk failsafe, memory test are normally options we would have to memorise. In this version we have full access! Press f2 to choose your language and again, it's spoken! I could rant and rave about how impressed I am but really, I would suggest you take a listen to the walk through and download 11 for your self. Of course, there are quite a few Yast GTK bugs to iron out and I've not had the time to submit them to bugzilla but I'm very confedent that once their submitted they'll be acted upon very promptly. New OpenSuSE 11 Accessible installation. Audio Walk through now available.

Greetings all, OpenSuSE 11 has seen the introduction of some great leaps in terms of accessibility in this distribution. When you boot the DVD, you'll hear a short high pitch beep. If you press F9, you'll hear a synthesizer that sounds like a poor quality ESpeak speak the grub menu items such as boot from hard disk, installation, falesafe etc. When you press f2, f3 f4 etc you will again hear the synthesizer speak the items you arrow over. This is a fantastic step and one that I am delighted to see OpenSuSE introduce. However, when I press enter on install, the installation loads in text mode however I don't get any further speech feedback. This is very unfortunate. I've been able to install OpenSuSE 11 using the Gnome live CD. That worked well however the GTK+ version of Yast still has a lot of accessibility related bugs. I unfortunately don't have time to report them all at the moment but I@d love to get around to it soon. Brien, Hans and JP Rosvier set out to make this the most accessible version of OpenSuSE 11. I think they've done a fantastic job. I've posted a few howtos on my website over at www.digitaldarragh.com to guide users through installing ESpeak from source along with Gnome-Speech and Orca from SVN in OpenSuSE so Gnome-Speech can use ESpeak. Any thought's on making the text installlation speak would be very appreciated. problems after instalation

Hello to everybody I write to this mailing list to look for some help, recently I tried to install openSuse in my pc, I download the is,burn it and I test the DVD with the openSUSE DVD tool, I install SUse with no problems, the problems came after the instalation, the instalation finished and at the end linux did not load the graphic desktop, I selected during the instalation the KDE 4.0. my PC specs are the next: Processor: AMD Athlon X2 Dual Core Processor 4800+ Graphic Card: Radeon 9200 PRO MB: Gigabyte NvIDIA GeForce 6100/nForce RAM: KIngston 2GB "Playing" a little bit with the unix language I have tried some commands as kdeinit, but the graphic desktop does not load, but I can give you some details I have seen rare. During the boot when Suse send me to the console I can read this Checking/updating CPU micromode unused and almost in the bottom before hte login it says this: Master Resource Control: runlevel 5 has been reached Skipped services in runlevel 5: microcode.ctl other thing I logged in with root and accesed to yast, inside yast when i go to see hardware I can se that my graphic card it's being recognized bad. Daniel, You do know that this is a list for discussing assistive software with OpenSuSE such as SBL and other software e.g: Orca, Speakup, BRLTTY etc? Sounds like your asking a graphical question. Are you just seeing a black screen? Do the following: Init 3 Log in as root. Use sax2 --help There's an option in there for starting with vesa modules. I cant remember what it is. Now type sax2 --(Option) replacing the option with that found with the --help command. Here, you can configure your graphics adapter. Problems with install!

Hi there, i have got Problems to install Suse 10.1 from CD. I put my cd in the cdrom and start up booting. In a few times there are the signal who says a braille display was found. The entry i've only have is Blinux Ver. 2.2 But the braille display is not realy working. The display ais a braillewave. What could i do to fix that problem? I#m glad too hear from you. I recenlty wetn to install SuSE 9.1 PRO. on an older box Compaq Deskpro 400Mhz. I never finished the install do to the fact that there was no Text based way to install SuSE that I could find. Even going through the install menu I was faced with KDE or whatever the Gui SuSE uses for the install. The machine being that speed it was, was taking forever, so I aborted the install and Ran Free BSD. It did great install was quick. Hi, ich versuche, Suse Linux 9.3 pro zu installieren. Die Handy Tech-Zeile wurde beim Start der Installation nicht erkannt. Auch nach der Installation wird die Zeile nicht angesprochen. Von einem Windows-Rechner kann ich mich auch nicht mit cygwinssh an Linux anmelden (time out). Ping reagiert. Ich bin Linux-Anfänger und mir fehlen vielleicht grundlegende Infos. Nun einige Fragen: Das Setup von CD startet mit einem Menü, welches standardmäßig nach einiger Zeit mein Windows von der Festplatte startet. Der Menüpunkt darunter ist die Linux-Installation, den ich ausgewählt hatte. Ist dies der richtige Weg? An welcher Stelle sollte die Brailleerkennung stattfinden? Bereits beim ersten Menü oder später? Wie ist dies zu erkennen? Liegt es an den Einstellungen der Firewall, dass ich mich mit cygwinssh nicht anmelden kann? In der 9.3 ist Gnopernikus enthalten. Wo gibt es eine Anleitung, wie Gnopernikus zu starten ist? Grüße Werner Rupp

Hi Masters, We just migrate our frontend users from Windows to Linux using SuSE 9.0 Temporarily, we use Linux (Red Hat 9.0 Professional) as our Print Server. Now we want to use W2K as our print server, because we have so many problem using Linux as Print Server (hang, slow response time,etc).Will this solve our printing problem ? and how can we possibly do this ? please explain step by step technique. Hi Gordon, I have some good news. I called Novell and was able to talk to one of Novell's Linux Tech's and he helped me check out Suse 9.3 Professional from there Web site and we found that blinux is still a package in Suse 9.3. They have not removed it. Blinux is a package in there Hardware Package Group of Packages and called SBL. The package is not installed by default but is on the Suse 9.3 CD's and DVD's and can be installed by Yast. I went to one of my Suse computers and started up Yast and went to Software and then Install Software and then did a search in Hardware Package Groups for SBL and there it is. You can check the box and then Yast will ask for the Suse CD or DVD and it will install the package. Now I know this is not going to be easy for you because you can't point and click your way through all of this as I was able to. But the blinux Package is still in Suse and I think its an upgraded program because its SBL 2.2 . The bad news is that Novell doesn't offer support for blinux so you can't call a Novell tech for help. You will have to get help from someone who has installed and worked with this package or from a Linux users group that can help you find someone with help. I konw this is not going to be easy but there is hope that with the right kind of help that it is possible. Now that we know that it's in 9.3, I will try to help you find someone who has experience with configuring it. It would be great if you could find someone close to you who could help you install the SBL Package and then see what happens after you install and re-boot. It may be useful once you get it installed with accessibility options enabled. But there doesn't seem to be any easy method of doing that. Hi Gordon, The best way to fix your problem is to reload Suse 9.3. What you should first do is hit the F2 or Delete key when you first start up your computer to get into the bios setup so you can set up the boot order to boot to the CD Drive first. It may be set up to boot to the Hard drive first so it does not get to the CD Drive to boot to Install Suse 9.3. I hope this is clear. The boot order has to be set to boot to Cd first to install. Linux und Screenreader

Hallo liebe Liste, ich habe mich eingetragen um mal hier zu fragen, was so der Stand der Dinge ist bei Linux und Screenreader-Software. Ich möchte eigene Projekte auf Barrierefreiheit testen, dazu aber, vor allem in der Arbeitsphase, nicht immer Windows booten müssen. Zumal ich einen lokalen Apache nutze und dann alles doppelt haben muß. Hat hier jemand schon mal probiert, JAWS unter Crossover Office von Codeweavers zu installieren? (Nach dem freien Wine wage ich nicht zu fragen, da bin ich sogar mit dem Internet Explorer gescheitert). Ich bin da ja skeptisch, weil JAWS meines Wissens auf irgendwelche internen Schnittstellen zugreift in Windows. Wie ist es mit emacspeak? Ist das eine empfehlenswerte Alternative, zumindest zum Testen? Von dem Sprachmodul unter Gnome höre ich leider keinen Ton. Ich habe hier übrigens Suse 9.1. Herzlichen Dank schon mal für Hinweise! SBL/SuSEConfig problem

Hi, I know this is a cup of tea which got a bit cool over time but: I can't get cursor routing to work on my machine : SuSE 9.1 PRO SBL 2.2-23 (FTP.ed from the 9.2 repository) kernel 2.6.5-7-145-default (updated by suse). Okay, I know you've got to deactivate UTF-8... So I tried changing the settings in /etc/sysconfig/language and /etc/sysconfig/keyboard accordingly and then run /sbin/SuSEconfig... However no matter what I do something overwrites my lc-variables. If any one knows the problem and has solved it I would be really thankful. Attached are my /etc/sysconfig files and the ouptut of locale run by root. installing SUSE 8.2 with Vario40 display

Hello Everyone, I am trying to install SUSE on a notebook system with a Vario40 connected to the serial port. After I start the installation, my braille ddisplay locks up. I cannot press any of the buttons on the display. I do not get any text on the display. It looks like my display is freezing during the hardware probe. Is there a way to force the screen reader to use a particular display on a particular port? I have tried this in both Baum mode and Handytech mode. Big problem to install SuSE 8

Hi all, I try to install SuSE 8 with an handytec BrailleTop But I encounter a big problem using Yast2. The BrailleTop is properly detected but when I try to navigate between the various choices present on the screen the braille display doesn't follow the cursor properly. I read the faq and others documentations on the unofficial english webpage and find that I need to indicate to the brailleTop that I want to switch to profile 2. To do such thing I pressed on the first left key, maintain it pressed and press the height key from left. I hear two beeps and then I suppose I'm in profile 2 but despite this command the problem is the same. So what can I do now to have the BrailleDisplay following the cursor in order to know which option is selected ? Thanks in advance for your help and advices. Read NTFS (Solve)

Dear All Linuxer, I've solved my problem since my Suse 8.0 could read NTFS partition on Windows XP. So this is how I make it happened (regarding to Christian Schoepplein [schoeppi(a)suse.de, Silviu Marin-Caea [silviu(a)genesys.ro] & Stuart Powell [SPowell(a)pcsolutionsmn.com]): 1. I make directory on /mnt directory => mkdir /mnt/ntfs 2. I change the fstab file => /dev/hda1 /mnt/ntfs ntfs ro,noauto,user,umask=022 0 0 3. I restart the system. 4. I login as ordinarry user 5. I create shortcut on desktop to /dev/hda1, with Windows XP Name (what's a name??;-)) 6. So, everytime I click that WindowsXP Icon, Konqueror will display the windows XP partition. Hello linuxer, My system right now is dual booting, winXP and suse8.0. The winXP use NTFS partition. How can I set suse8.0, so it can read the ntfs partition from windows. I've tried to mounting the ntfs partition, but failed. I've heard that another new released distro - like mandrake 9.0 - could read ntfs partition. Hi all, I have been trying to install the driver for my modem Ambient Technologies on linux suse 7.2 and I have found some problems. I followed the instructions written in readme.txt was extract from Intel-v92ham-440-S73.tgz. So I do the following steps: 1. login as ROOT 2. extract the archive into a directory with "tar -zxvf <archivename>.tgz" 3. cd into the directory it created. 4. Type: make clean 5. Type: make all 6. Hi all, I am running SuSE 7.2 with brltty 2.99.5, and have noticed that yast and yast2 are not acccessible. Is there a way to do system administration of the system without these tools? I know that on red-hat adduser can be used to add a new user, but that seems to be missing from SuSE. Any help would be appreciated. I am a real newbie at SuSE, in fact only had it since Friday, and can't get it installed on another pc.

I recently purchased SuSE 7.3 and am trying to install it. The problem I'm having is with my Raid. I'm using the Promise Fasttrak100 tx4 and at installation boot it freezes while detecting the drives (gives me an part table error). Seems to me that I need to have the driver for the controler installed for SuSE 7.3 to proceed. I tried looking on Promise's site and they do have linux drivers (ft.o), but not for SuSE 7.3 only 7.1 and 7.2. Hi, ich bin - viellleicht - zukuenftiger linux user. Seit langem aergere ich mich einersetis ueber instabiles windows und astronomische Preise fuer accessibility produckte und habe andererseits auch durch einige Freunde, die Verschiedene Unix Varianten benutzen, selbst Interesse bekommen an den Moeglichkeiten, die einem dieses OS bietet. Ausserdem ist ja mit der Ankuendigung des Erscheinens von Gnome 2.0 und dem eingebundenen Screenreader Gnpernicus - wenn ich das richtig verstehe - auch fuer uns Blinde die Benutzung eines gui unter linux in erreichbare Naehe. Da ich nur Speech user bin und kaum Braille kann und auch kein Braille display beigne, hab ich bis jetzt immer von linux zurueckgescheut. Jetzt hab ich aber mit Redhat 7.2 und speakup eine speech-enabled distro wenn ich mich denn ranwagen wuerde. Und daher dann auch meine Frage: Da ja Susie meines Wissens nach noch nicht ausschliesschlich aus der Box mit Sprache laeuft und ich auch redhat mehrfach empfohlen bekommen hab, bin ich mit meiner moeglichen zukuenftigen Installation des konkurrenzproducktes und meinen vielen Fragen dazu hier auf der Suse LIste trotzdem willkommen? Ich weiss von der Existenz einer englischen Blinux liste, die soweit ich weiss, markenunabhaengig ist, aber ich haette gern eine Liste mit Leuttchen ein bisschen naeher an Zuhause wenn ich mich daran wagen sollte, di e unendlichen Welten des Linux Universums zu entdecken. Zu meiner Person noch schnell was. ich werde im naechsten Februar inzwischen schon 38. Freunde bescheinigen mir, computer nut und netaholic zu sein. ,g> Kann ich nicht objektiv beurteilen. <g> Jedenfalls stimmt's, dass ich gern viele Stunden am pc verbringe, und dies noch viel mehr, seit ichvor fast vier Jahren erblindete. While researching the options blinux and emacspeak have both come up on several occasions. We need support for the AccentPC synthesizer card, and the Crystal Audio 42sx sound card. From what I have researched, the AccentPC card is not supported intrinsically by emacspeak. We are hoping to get some general information, and/or suggestions for this type of setup. Hi Liste, kurz zu meiner Person: Ich heiße Marco Kotzelnik und studiere an der TU Braunschweig Wirtschaftsinformatik. bislang habe ich für alle Arbeiten, die an der Uni anfallen, mein Windowssystem verwendet, was ich jetzt ändern möchte, da an der Uni überwiegend UNIX-Systeme verwendet werden und auch die Programmierübungen an diesen Rechnern abgenommen werden. Gestern habe ich SuSE-Linux 7.3 auf meinem Rechner installiert. Wie ihr euch denken könnt, ist die Umstellung von Windows auf Linux recht schwierig. Zunächst einmal habe ich mich mit dem Dateisystem von Linux auseinandergesetzt und muss mich noch an das ein oder andere gewöhnen. Nun meine Fragen: 1. Da - wie gesagt - meine Kenntnisse in sachen Linux "noch" recht dürftig sind, downloade ich die Dateien, die ich für die Uni brauche, zur Zeit noch von meinem Windowssystem aus dem Internet. hierbei handelt es sich zumeist um gezipte Postscript-Dateien (*.ps.gz), die von einem UNIX-System der Uni erstellt worden sind. Muss ich diese Dateien zunächst auf Diskette speichern, um sie mit Linux bearbeiten zu können, oder gibt es da auch noch andere Möglichkeiten (Zugriff von Linux auf das Windows-System)? 2. Wie gesagt, ich bin Anfänger, da können auch mal "dumme" Fragen kommen: Wie greife ich von Linux aus auf eine Diskette oder CD zu? 3. Ich verwende die 2D-Screen von Papenmeier. Gibt es dafür irgendwo eine Tastenbelegung bzw. -beschreibung? Das war zwar noch "lange" nicht alles, aber fürs erste muss es reichen! Freue mich auf eure Antworten! Gruß, Marco

Help please, PCI modem for Suse in the UK?

Hello Apologies but I am very new to this and have spent the last week reading and re-reading, being pointed to one doc file or another internet site, all appearing to give me confilicting info. I am therefore, for the moment, giving up on trying to ascertain if my present internal WinModem will work on com4 on my machine, and am asking for a quick solution. Once online I can play with my old modem's possibilities or otherwise to my heart's content, but my priority is getting online in Linux. I would very much appreciate any advice on a PCI modem that will allow me to use my two physical comm ports for Braille and speech, and where I might obtain one in the UK. (I was advised by the Suse support staff to go down this road rather than looking for a USB modem, but again, if anyone has clear advice I would appreciate it). Thank you, very desperately hoping someone can help.

Hello I am using SuseBlinux with hardware speech synth and Braille display on com1 and 2. I only have a winmodem which uses virtual comport 4 and will therefore not work with Linux. I only have two physical comm ports on my machine. Is there any way around this? I wonder if any USB modems are supported in Linux - specifics would be helpful? I do not think software speech is fully developed yet and the Apollo2 is very responsive. Any help welcomed please. Thanks.

Hi. Can anybody suggest which would be the best e-mail utility to use in Suse, in a text-only system. I can probably second-guess the answer to this next question, but what about an Internet web browser? Finally, is their an FTP server with Suse that is installed in the default system, or one which I can find in the packages? Next, is there a way I can mount a FAT32 Windows partition, to make it visible to Linux? and finally, I need to map the drives on my Linux box from my Window-based machine. What's the easiest way of doing all this? Thanks in advance. Presumably this is done in Yast2 is it, although I can't see where. Hello. I have been told that SuSE supports speech synthesizers as well as Braille terminals, is this true? If so, could someone tell me how one initialises the synthesizer? Hi. As Suse defaults, which is the best way to edit text files? I used the Edit program, but could not work out how to save a modified file. Any info appreciated. Installing SuSE

Hello. I have a question regarding the installation of SuSE. Is it possible to install SuSE with the following configuration: Drive 1 contains Windows, 9x in a FAT32 partition which occupies the entire drive. Drives 2, 3 and 4 are FAT32 drives, used for data storage. Drive 5 is set aside for SuSE. I have managed to get it installed with this configuration, but I then can't find a way to boot to Linux. I followed the recommended Lilo installation, I.E., wrote the Lilo to floppy. However, when it comes to boot time, the computer refuses to boot from the floppy SuSE created. I would prefer to use a boot manager on my first drive to boot Linux, but this doesn't want to work either. The manager finds the Linux configuration ok, but says it is non-bootable. Any suggestions please, bearing in mind that I'm still new to Linux. Thanks. I have extract the sources from the sbl.spm file but I don't be able to find doc threating about compiling this sources. Is this doc existing or not ? Hi Linuxspezialisten, hat einer von euch schon mal ausprobiert, ob sich blinux unter aix übersetzen läßt? Ich muß vielleicht bald unter AIX arbeiten und würde nun gerne wissen, ob es möglich wäre, blinux auf einer AIX-wworkstation zu betreiben. Hat da jemand erfahrungen? Vielen dank für eure Antworten. SuSE Installer

Hi. 2 Questions regarding the installer. Firstly, is there any comprehensive documentation on the installer when used in conjunction with a Braille terminal? Secondly, when I run the installer, I get no text output on my monitor when a Braille display is detected. Is this normal? I thought some kind of redirection may be going on here, but it seems strange to me if that is the case. It also has a huge disadvantage, in as much as I can't always track the installer properly with my Alva 340, and it would maybe help to have sighted help. But, since there is no text being displayed on my monitor, that isn't possible. Yast2 with Braille

Hi. I am still struggling with the Braille interface in the Yast2 installation program for SuSE. I can't seem to move around the installation dialogs properly. The keys I am trying to use are: Tab to advance to the next dialog, up/down arrow to select items in list boxes and radio buttons. Space to highlight an option in a radio button. Enter to select the next button. However, the Braille display is not tracking the changes on-screen, and parts of the display appear to be getting complete garbled. Also, is there a way to change the Braille translation table from the German 8-dot default, (which I find extremely difficult to read), to English 6-dot? I'm using an Alva-Braille ABT340. The display seems responsive enough, and is initialising reliably now. Finally, wen I boot into the installation, I'm getting some sort of message about my computer not supporting the graphical installation, and about needing a minimum of 64M of RAM for this. It also says something like as a fallback, the textual front-end will be used to guide me through the installation. Is this normal for users of Braille, or could it be that SuSE doesn't like my graphics card? Any help appreciated.
