Oh sorry, there is only a german manual for installation availabel at the moment :-(. But I can try to explaine the installation in english ;-). first of all make sure, that you have downloaded all the stuff you need from the SuSe-ftp-server: ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/projects/blinux/mbrola You should have this files: mbrola4sbl-1.0-0.i386.rpm en1-male.tgz Now install the rpm-file with the following command, after you loged in as root: rpm -i mbrola4sbl-1.0-0.i386.rpm Now uncompress the speechdatabase: tar xvzf en1-male.tgz Enter the new created directory en1 with cd en1 and copy the file en1 into the directory for speechdatabases: cp en1 /usr/lib/mbrola/voices Now you have to tell suse-blinux, witch speechdatabase to use. To do this, open the mbrola in the spk-directory. For example: joe /usr/lib/suse-blinux/spk/mbrola Set the vallue for language1 to en1: language1=en1 Safe and close the mbrola-file an open /etc/suse-blinux.conf, to activate the softspeech: joe /etc/suse-blinux.conf and set the follwoing variables: spkname=mbrola spkport=// If you don't have a brailledvice connectect, set also brname to ht40: brlname=ht40 Now you should be able to use suse-blinux with mbrola. You can use the speechfunctions with your brailledisplay. To use the normal keyboard for speechfunctions, you have to patch the kernel and the whole thing only works with kernel 2.2.x... Just restart suse-blinux and tell me, if mbrola is speeking :-): sbl restart If you have any problems, just ask, we try to help you ;-). Hi thanks for the help. I made your changes but when i do sbl restart it seg faults. I also can not find the core file. Please sent me your suse-blinux.conf, maybe there is teh problem. Wihitch brailledevice are you using? Best regards, Schoeppi On Sam, Dez 15, 2001 at 03:29:32 -0500, Robert Lumley wrote:

Hi, yes the accent sa and the dectalk express are both serial synths. I'm using a alva 380 and will send you the sus-blinux.conf as soon as i can get it over to this machine with email :) rob -----Original Message----- From: Christian Schoepplein [mailto:schoeppi@suse.de] Sent: Sunday, December 16, 2001 9:59 AM To: suse-blinux@suse.com Cc: Christian Schoepplein Subject: Re: [suse-blinux] mbrola or other tts Hi Rob! OK, send me the file. Have you ever used a dosscreenreader with your hardware synts? I ask this, becouse many dosscreenreaders have files with the commandsettings for triggering the hardwaresynt. In Germany most people don't have the dectalk or the accent synth, they're useing apollo1, apollo2 or infovox in most cases, so we don't have such a commandfile :-(. But if yu could send us the files for one of your synts (or even better, for both ;-)) we can try to integrate them in to SuSE-Blinux. This should be no problem..., triggering hardwaresynts is very easy. If you want to know how it works or if you want to try to setup your synts for yourself, take a look in to the following tow files (just use a normal editor to open them): /usr/lib/suse-blinux/spk/apollo2 /usr/lib/suse-blinux/spk/vox700 If you need help, just write a comment into tis list!!! Edit the file /etc/suse-blinux.conf. Go to the entry "spkname" and set it to "mbrola: spkname=mbrola Perhaps you've also to edit /usr/lib/suse-blinux/spk/mbrola to specify the voice-database to use. best Regards Henning -- -- Henning Oschwald SuSE AG SuSE-Blinux Support mailto: hoschwa@suse.de blinux-support: Di. und Do. 15:00 - 20:00 Uhr unter 0421/526-2480 SuSE-Blinux Homepage: www.blinux.suse.de
