[opensuse-announce] openSUSE 13.2 has reached end of SUSE support

Hi all, with the release of tilda on January 17th, 2017 the SUSE sponsored maintenance of openSUSE 13.2 has ended. openSUSE 13.2 is now officially discontinued and out of support by SUSE. Here are some statistics: openSUSE 13.2 was released on November 4th 2014, making it ca. 26 months of security and bugfix support. If you haven't done so, please test drive 42.2 now. As usual please report bugs via bugzilla². Make sure to check the most annoying bugs list³. As we are getting closer to the release it's also about time to start polishing the wiki. The 42.2 portal⁴ looks rather poor still. It's a wiki so just go ahead to bring the 42.2 pages in shape. You may want to join the opensuse-marketing list⁵ to coordinate the marketing related content. The next milestone will be RC1. So please refrain from submitting non-bugfix changes to Leap now. We are happy to announce the availability of the Open Build Service Version 2.7! Three large features around the topic of integrating external resources made it into this release. We worked on automatic tracking of moving repositories of development versions like Fedora Rawhide, distribution updates or rolling Linux releases like Arch. A change to the OBS git integration to enable developers to work on continuous builds. And last but not least an experimental KIWI import that can be used to easily migrate your images from SUSE studio. Our awesome community has been busy with this release. Since OBS 2.6 there have been over 2000 commits, changing over a 1.000 files with nearly 9.000 additions and 16.000 deletions! Additional to these three main features OBS 2.7 brings a lot of smaller, more isolated features. The OBS backend now has support for the simpleimage format to produce simple rootfs or squashfs images and can build packages in the collax format, which is a variation of deb. Additionally it supports build time source services that get executed before the package build tool (eg. rpm-build). The OBS frontend makes it possible to enforce removal of projects with dependencies, restricts superseding requests to the same source project and allows to pick only certain requests to supersede. Hi folks, With the release of openSUSE Leap 42.1 last week the SUSE contributed support for openSUSE 13.1 is coming to an end in 2 months, around January 5th 2016. However ... the Evergreen community team is planning to pick up maintenance of 13.1 after this date, so openSUSE 13.1 will be maintained for a longer time! Also for future planning: openSUSE 13.2 will be supported until 2 months after the release of Leap 42.2, which is probably in around one year. The Leap team has so far not fixed the date of this release. For openSUSE Leap we are still planning the lifetimes currently, but it will be at least 2 years (2 yearly releases + 2 months), or potentially longer. Ciao, Marcus for the openSUSE Maintenance team

The wait is over and a new era begins for openSUSE releases. Contributors, friends and fans can now download the first Linux hybrid distro openSUSE Leap 42.1. Since the last release, exactly one year ago, openSUSE transformed its development process to create an entirely new type of hybrid Linux distribution called openSUSE Leap. Version 42.1 is the first version of openSUSE Leap that uses source from SUSE Linux Enterprise (SLE) providing a level of stability that will prove to be unmatched by other Linux distributions. Bonding community development and enterprise reliability provides more cohesion for the project and its contributor’s maintenance updates. openSUSE Leap will benefit from the enterprise maintenance effort and will have some of the same packages and updates as SLE, which is different from previous openSUSE versions that created separate maintenance streams. Community developers provide an equal level of contribution to Leap and upstream projects to the release, which bridges a gap between matured packages and newer packages found in openSUSE’s other distribution Tumbleweed. Since the move was such a shift from previous versions, a new version number and version naming strategy was adapted to reflect the change. The SLE sources come from SUSE’s soon to be released SLE 12 Service Pack 1 (SP1). The naming strategy is SLE 12 SP1 or 12.1 + 30 = openSUSE Leap 42.1. Many have asked why 42, but SUSE and openSUSE have a tradition of starting big ideas with a four and two, a reference to The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. Every minor version of openSUSE Leap users can expect a new KDE and GNOME, but today is all about openSUSE Leap 42.1, so if you are tired of a brown desktop, try a green one. It looks like the release of Leap will be on Nov. 4 at 14:00 UTC, but some other things need to happen before we confirm Nov. 4 officially as the release date. An important date that can be mentioned about Leap right now is Sept. 20. This is the tentatively the freeze point for items to be included in the Leap Beta. Artwork for Leap like Grub, Plymouth or other items can be submitted through github by cloning the Leap-42.1 branch in openSUSE branding and submit a pull request to @sysrich. A branch was also started for Tumbleweed, so anyone wanting to advance the visual appearance of both openSUSE distributions is welcome (links in the article). Full Article: http://bit.ly/1KoiaC4 The newest openSUSE release Leap 42.1, which is based on core SUSE Linux Enterprise source code, has just released its first development milestone. Milestone is being used to avoid the term Alpha because the milestone is able to be deployed without the additional future items and subsystems that will become available when Leap is officially released. “This is where the excitement for Leap begins,” said Richard Brown, chairman of the openSUSE board. “The opportunity for topping this SLE core with the things you want in a long-term release really makes this attractive and I see people wanting to get involved with this next chapter of openSUSE.” As Tumbleweed keeps rolling with the latest features and subsystems, Leap will fill the gap between the longevity of a SLE core and the innovation related to Tumbleweed, he said. The quality and environmental care Tumbleweed provides with its development model should quickly translate to a top-quality distribution for Linux users, sysadmins and developers. The milestone was moving forward with a 3 series Linux Kernel, but the Long-Term Support 4.1 Kernel, which enhances EXT4 file-system encryption and power improvements for both ARM and x86 devices, was needed for the release of the first milestone. The new Kernel was practically flawless when added to the next build, which had some minor errors. Updated drivers and more general improvements are expected in the second milestone. GNOME 3.16, KDE Plasma 5 and Firefox 38 are projected for the release of Leap in November at SUSECon in Amsterdam. Stephan “Coolo” Kulow, the release manager, provided an update on the packages for Leap. Since the announcement four weeks ago, the sources leaped from 2,000 to about 5,450 source, which about 1,150 are from SLE 12. The binary packages for the milestone currently stand at about 56,500 compared to 13.2’s 71,750 for the same measure. If you want to see what the future of Leap will be, try the milestone and contribute to making Leap an LTS-rock release, which will have enduring updates and maintenance commitments by the community and SUSE. Part of that commitment can be seen through the recent job announcement of a Release Engineer for openSUSE. [opensuse-announce] The Name & Version for the new openSUSE Regular Release

Hi all, Drum roll please. First we would like to thank everyone who participated in the naming discussion [1][2] for the input and for entrusting the board to bring the process to a conclusion. After due deliberations and consulting with the release and maintenance teams we have decided the name and version of the next release should be openSUSE Leap 42.x We felt that Leap, with reference to motion, i.e. how the distribution moves forward, provides a nice contrast to Tumbleweed. It also represents that we are taking a leap to get there. It does not cast is into a mold that would set the precedence of openSUSE <plant_name> which we think would have encouraged a regular debate as new <plant_names> were considered for each product or release to go with the theme. Finally it leaves the door open for plenty of options should there be other efforts to create an openSUSE release based on Factory snapshots at some point in the future. As far as the version number is concerned we concluded that 42 is a great starting point due to the historical reference in the project. It's quirky and we felt it suits us well. We deliberated other options such as starting at 1.x or some other arbitrary number such as 22 but we preferred 42. Additionally 42 has already gotten some notoriety and thus we might as well stick with it. In the end we all know the number is more or less arbitrary and the important point is that it increases going forward ;) .x is used to indicate the service pack of SLE from which the sources originate. We expect the first release to be 42.1 because we intend to have the release aligned and sharing code with SLE 12 SP1. The major version will increase alongside the major version of the shared SLE sources, therefore a SLE 13 SP2 servicepack based release would be named openSUSE Leap 43.2 Thanks again to everyone for helping out. The change is so phenomenal that the project is building a whole new release. Some people might be perplexed over the next regular release, but rather than bikeshedding the name over the next few months, for the moment, we will call it openSUSE: 42 after its project name in the Open Build Service. And we are going to explain the roadmap for this regular release. openSUSE 42 is scheduled to be released around SUSECon, which is in Amsterdam this year from Nov. 2 – 6. Unlike old releases, future releases of “42” are expected to align with the releases of SLE service packs and major releases. There are about 2,000 packages in openSUSE 42 right now, said Stephan “Coolo” Kulow, release manager. Of course, many more are expected. openSUSE 42 will be a long-term type release with enduring updates and maintenance commitments by the community and SUSE. Kulow said a milestone will be released soon. “We have to come up with solutions as problems arise,” Kulow said. [opensuse-announce] Tumbleweed - Review of the Week 2015/25

Dear Tumbleweed users and hackers, During this week, Tumbleweed has been undergoing major work, which resulted in only one minor snapshot being released into the wild (20150612 hit the mirrors on Monday). Most changes were further preparations for GCC 5, which brings me to the actual, big news for this week: * GCC 5 has been checked in to be the default compiler collection for Tumbleweed from now on. Due to the nature of a compiler switch, the entire distribution (> 8000 source packages) are being rebuilt. A lengthy process that is currently still ongoing. As expected, the number of build failures went up a lot (as described in the past, the staging areas only rebuild a subset of packages, namely the ones that are shipped on the DVD; doing the full repository in stagings would be unrealistic, ,due to build power constraints). So, beloved hackers, your help is now needed to get the number of failed packages down again. In the last couple days I tried to mark the failures in the status screen [0] with some information on what could go wrong. Start your engines, branch as much as you can, fix the builds and submit them back to the devel projects and back into Tumbleweed. Let's show the world how fast we can get this back to 'normal' numbers of failures. Christian was kind enough to post in http://lists.opensuse.org/opensuse-factory/2015-06/msg00281.html the most common issues you might encounter and some word of advice to get the issues fixed. Also, a lot of upstreams have been fixing their codes already, so an update might be worthy to look at. Last, but not least, Fedora also performed the switch in preparation for their next release (F23) and you might as well borrow patches from there.
