We’re proud to announce today that Jos Poortvliet will join the openSUSE
project and Novell as openSUSE Community Manager starting on August 1. With
Jos we’ve found a leader with excellent community building experience
combined with a very welcoming nature, many fresh, promising ideas and a
strong drive to grow the openSUSE Project. Jos holds a degree in
Organisational Psychology from the University of Utrecht and has gained
valuable experience in several professional roles ranging from Project
Manager at KPN to Service Level Manager at Royal Bank of Scotland. Last but
not least, Jos is a leading member of the KDE Marketing Team and has helped
Akademy and the Gran Canaria Desktop Summit attract a vibrant and
collaborative audience.
Jos commented, “The opportunity to become part of the international
openSUSE community is very exciting. There are a great number of
interesting developments going on in the free software world, and openSUSE
plays a major role in many of them. I look forward to working with the
community on these, helping it grow, finding new directions and ways of
developing, and delivering its innovative technologies to users and
developers around the world.”
We enthusiastically welcome Jos and look forward to his working with the
openSUSE community to shape the future of the openSUSE project. After his
start he will be deeply involved in the openSUSE conference, other
community events and activities, and of course he will have the pleasure of
promoting openSUSE wherever possible.

The openSUSE Project is pleased to announce the release of the latest
incarnation of openSUSE, with support for 32-bit and 64-bit systems. openSUSE
11.3 [1] is packed with new features and updates including SpiderOak to sync
your files across the Internet for free, Rosegarden for free editing of your
audio files, improved indexing with Tracker, and updates to Mozilla Firefox,
and Thunderbird.
Among these many new features, openSUSE also provides support for netbooks and
the Btrfs file system support. Users can expect to see improved hardware
support with the 2.6.34 Linux kernel and updated graphics drivers. And support
for the next generation of interactive computing for touchscreens like the HP
TouchSmart.
openSUSE continues its tradition of delivering the popular KDE, GNOME and Xfce
desktop environments, and now also provides the lightweight LXDE desktop
environment. With GNOME, you can use the latest 2.30.1 version or take your
installation for a drive with a preview of the upcoming GNOME 3.0. Or choose
KDE SC 4.4.4 for the latest updates. They all feature the polish and
integration that the openSUSE distro has been known for.
For a full view check the complete collection of screenshots [2] or install it
right away [3]. As we expect very large demand for the ISOs we suggest you
check out BitTorrent as download method ;-)
For servers and development platforms, administrators can take full advantage
of the new MariaDB and MySQL Cluster services as well as Conntrack to filter
network packets for iptables. Developers will appreciate the plethora of tools
available at their fingertips with GCC, GDB and Mono and IDEs such as
Netbeans, Qt-Creator and many others. This is all on top of the countless
libraries available through the openSUSE Build Service [4] (OBS).
Visit our Product Highlights [5] page for a detailed list of new features.
The next release will be openSUSE 11.4 in March, 2011.
Thank you, and have a lot of fun!

We just switched to the new wiki. So here it is. And now? Let me explain
what you can do to help!
=====================
Create your user page
=====================
Every user of the wiki has a personal page and we did not transfer any
of them. We wanted to use this opportunity to brush them up and
standardize them. Your userpage should be your first task in the new
wiki. If your username is Geeko, just go to
http://en.opensuse.org/User:Geeko and press “create”. After that load
the userpage teamplate by pressing on the “Load” button. Then fill out
the form and you will get a nice standardized userpage!
You can also of course transfer your old userpage. Just go to
http://old-en.opensuse.org/User:Geeko to find the content.
====================
Report Missing Pages
====================
Can’t find your page? Think we missed something? Just report the page to
the opensuse wiki team! We will try our best to help you getting it back!
======================
Transfer Missing Pages
======================
Want to get your hands dirty? Dive right into the new wiki and learn how
it works on the Wiki Portal or the previous posts on this blog. After
you did that and know all the new wiki Kung-fu you go and find the pages
you think are missing on http://old-en.opensuse.org. Now you have two
options, either use the Special:Export page on the old wiki and the
Special:Import on the new wiki if you want to transfer the article with
all of its history or you just copy and paste the article if the history
is not that important.
Otherwise Just Keep Calm And Carry On!
