I'm glad to announce the first beta of openSUSE 10.2 codename Basilisk
Lizard for PowerPC.
Our developers fixed bug #213873 which made installation on PowerPC
impossible and we've mastered media for PowerPC now as well.
Note that the factory tree still has an old broken installation images
and will only be updated with the next sync, please install from CDs
or DVD.
openSUSE 10.2 Beta1 contains a large number of enhancements and
updates done by the open source community and Novell's development
teams.
I'd like to point out especially the following significant changes
From our list of updates of all open source subcomponents, integration
of new subcomponents and improvements in various areas:
- Linux Kernel 2.6.18.1
- glibc 2.5
- Firefox 2.0
- GNOME 2.16.1
- KDE 3.5.5
- X11 R7.2 RC
- both KDE and GNOME feature improved start menus compared to
upstream

new update notification applet (opensuse-updater) and a console
application called zypper which are non-zmd based. The update
stack has been improved in both features and speed.
- integration of powermanagement features into hal
See also http://en.opensuse.org/Factory/News - and the ChangeLog file
on the first media of each set for a really detailed overview.
Thanks to everybody making this release happen - and thanks to all
testing it!
Beta1 has a couple of rough edges, the most annoying ones are
documented at http://en.opensuse.org/Bugs:Most_Annoying_Bugs . For
now let me just point out the following:
* On some new installations an error occured preparing a hard disk Bug
#214682. This seems to happen on disks without any prior
partitioning and when using EVMS. EVMS is broken here. If this
happens, start the installation again.
* zen-updater is not installed by default Bug #214877
* kpowersave crashes directly Bug #214881
* The product is not completely localised, localisation will be done
for Beta2.
* Grub installs in MBR no matter what is selected in YaST2-bootloader
(Bug #213256)
* Major changes in the bluez-libs might lead to problems with
connecting to Bluetooth-devices
* Help Center Integration of the openSUSE Manuals is work in
progress. There are issues with the desktop files (Bug #213573)
* yelp segfaults (Bug #210429)
* The product is not completly localised, localisation will be done
for Beta2.
openSUSE 10.2 Beta1 comes in different medias:
* 5 CDs, you need CDs 1-3 for a normal installation with just GNOME or
KDE (any language)
* 1 AddOn CD with only binary packages on it
* 1 AddOn CD with language packages that are used for our tier 2
languages (tier 1 languages are english, french, italian, spanish,
german, chinese, japanese and czech - and support for those is on
the standard 5 CDs) (the 5 CDs have support for installation in all
languages, just extra packages are only on this extra media)
* 1 DVD containing the contents of the above 7 media
* a FTP tree with open source packages (only for the final version,
for now use the factory tree)
* a FTP tree with binary packages (only for the final version, for now
use the factory-extra tree)
For PowerPC we have created Delta ISOs the CDs of Alpha4. Please use
them for download. We have mastered a DVD5 for PowerPC and will
distribute it *only* via bittorrent.
Please report all bugs you find on in our bugzilla as explained in
http://bugs.opensuse.org, discussion is most appropriate on the
opensuse-factory(a)opensuse.org mailing list.
Thanks,
The spicy POWER Team at SUSE and Andreas

We're happy to announce that we have put out now the complete
remastered version of SUSE Linux 10.1 (including DVD but no LiveDVD or
ftp installation source), which includes all patches for SUSE Linux
10.1 released till October 9. It replaces the original ISOs on our
mirrors. This version will ease the issues users had with the
goldmaster version and should make the installing and working
experience much smoother for everyone.
The files have a "Remastered" in their name and a symbolic link from
the old name to them so that references will continue to work.
If you are running SUSE Linux 10.1 already, there is no need to
download these images at all. Just do an update from our update
repository to get all our security updates. This remastered media are
usefull for new installations.
We're now focusing on the next milestone, openSUSE 10.2
Have a lot of fun!
your openSUSE team

I'm happy to announce the availability of SUSE Linux 10.1 "remastered".
This release combines the 10.1 GM and all online updates that we have
released for 10.1 so far, including libzypp, which should make the
installing and working experience much smoother for everyone.
We have created new CD ISO images and supplied delta ISOs from the
goldmaster. The non-OSS DVD images will show up next week, we had to
retract and will remaster. The ftp installation tree remains
unchanged.

Our Basilisk Lizard has shown this week its other side and I'd like to
thank especially Jürgen, Lars, Christoph, Steffen, Jiri, Ladislav for
taming the lizard. Fights come with a prize to pay - ours are
two-fold: The PowerPC distribution and the CD installation.
We only have DVDs for i386 and x86-64 this time. They are available
via ftp.opensuse.org and its mirrors. Mini-ISOs for remote
installation are available as well. So, there are neither CDs nor
deltas.
If you download the DVDs, check the media sizes first, they are:
openSUSE-10.2-Alpha5-DVD-i386.iso: 4165675008 bytes
openSUSE-10.2-Alpha5-DVD-x86_64.iso: 4203270144 bytes
Since most webservers are not setup to deliver files greater than 2 GB
via http and our download.opensuse.org handles http download mainly,
please use ftp to download from one of the known mirrors (see
e.g. http://en.opensuse.org/Factory_Mirror_List).
The URL for the DVDs torrents are:
http://download.opensuse.org/distribution/openSUSE-10.2-Alpha5/openSUSE-10.…http://download.opensuse.org/distribution/openSUSE-10.2-Alpha5/openSUSE-10.…
The list of known annoying bugs is available as usual at
http://en.opensuse.org/Bugs:Most_Annoying_Bugs#openSUSE_10.2_Alpha_5:
It currently contains:
* Registration fails Bug #205392
* After logging in to KDE, a popup window will inform you that dbus is
not running. Just ignore the message - dbus is running Bug #209009
* Suspend to disk will fail with an error message "The resume device
configured in /etc/suspend.conf". (fixed powersave package should be
in factory by monday, until then you can edit /etc/suspend.conf and
put your resume device from the resume=... boot parameter
there. However, the fixed package is better).
* The x86-64 uses nearly double the disk space for installed packages
than usual. It looks like a bug in binutils stripping the binaries
Bug #210331
* Instead of /dev/hd for IDE disks using Intel ICHx chipsets the
libata interfaces are used and disks show up as /dev/sd Bug #210478
* zen-updater always shows patterns to update Bug #198379
* It's not possible to start applications via kdesu, eg
yast2. Workaround: use "su" in a shell. Bug #208272
* The bootloader configuration on BIOS-based RAID (so-called FakeRAID)
systems fails. BUG #208076
* gnome-screensaver does not accept the correct password. Bug #204364
* Workaround: Kill the gnome-screensaver process.
This is the last external Alpha, we will deliver in three weeks our
first Beta of openSUSE 10.2.
Alpha5 includes the following important changes:
* Linux kernel 2.6.18
* glibc 2.5
* Python 2.5
* Installation allows comfortable LVM partitioning
* Setup RAID automatically via the BIOS (so called fake-RAID support)
in the partitioner
* GNOME 2.16.1 (most packages are updated)
* KDE 3.5.5 SVN version
* Firmware test as additional bootoption (this is the Intel firmware
test tool)
Have a lot of fun with openSUSE 10.2 - codename "Basilisk Lizard",
Andreas
