Hi GNOMEs!
I know you are all eagerly awaiting it!
* AND IT JUST HAPPENED *
GNOME 3.6 (at least what has been released so far; official release date
is tomorrow, so there can still some more packages appear) has been
submitted and accepted into GNOME:Factory.
* FACTORY USERS *
GNOME:Factory, as you all know, is the staging project where all
packages are being tested against each other and, once deemed working,
be forwarded to openSUSE:Factory, to be included into our next release
of openSUSE.
GNOME:Factory is NOT compatible to 12.2 (due to dependencies).
* BUT *
Don't be afraid just yet: All this great work has also been submitted
and accepted into a new repository GNOME:STABLE:3.6 (which, at this
moment, is not published; we will be doing at least a few integration
tests on 12.2 before crashing _your_ machine(s).) If all goes well and
may the OBS be with us (giving us the build power we need), this should
not take too long.
Once all this is ready, we'll let you know here again!
* BUT BUT *
_YOU_ are really brave and don't mind crashing your machine... should
this happen, you are
a) capable of extracting log files (even if NO gui comes up
b) formulate readable bug reports
c) FIX the bug :)
then there is even a repository for 12.2 published (actually, it is
GNOME:STABLE:3.6 published in a different namespace). So if you feel
adventerous and comply to at least 2 of the 3 points above (:)), then
you are allowed to use the repository home:dimstar:broken on your
machine and get up to GNOME 3.6 (don't do this just now: the repository
is in a full rebuild due to the checkins!)
* WHAT MORE *
What? you want even MORE??? Well, formulate your needs, and we'll find a
way to make you work on them :)
After all, this is a community effort! We need YOU to make this all
possible.
Hope you're having a lot of fun!

This week Alan Clark announced to the openSUSE Board that he is stepping
down from his position as Board Chair. His duties in SUSE keep him
increasingly busy and SUSE has decided, after almost two years, the time has
come for someone else to take on his role.
So, after thinking about what skills are most relevant for the openSUSE
Board right now and who would fit in best, SUSE managers Michael Miller
(Marketing and Product Management) and Ralf Flaxa (Engineering) have brought
in former GNOME Foundation Chairman Vincent Untz to take on the role as
chair. The Board is very pleased having someone with the skills and
experience of Vincent on board!
Read more about this on our news site:
http://news.opensuse.org/?p=14113
And the official announcement from SUSE:
https://www.suse.com/company/press/2012/9/opensuse-project-announces-
appointment-of-vincent-untz-as-opensuse-board-chair.html
Both Alan and Vincent Untz as well as number of the other openSUSE Board
members are at the openSUSE Summit right now. If you're there, go and look
them up for a chat about where openSUSE is going. If you can't make it, they
will surely be at the openSUSE Conference in Prague in October!

I would like to inform of the following:
1) Cinnamon has been moved to the X11:Cinnamon repository and will be
normally maintained;
2) As the Cinnamon code base depends a lot on GNOME 3, to simplify
things, I've opted for the following repo layout:
a) X11:Cinnamon (empty repository)
b) X11:Cinnamon:GNOME34 - Cinnamon releases compatible with
GNOME34 code base;
c) X11:Cinnamon:GNOME36 - Cinnamon releases compatible with
GNOME36 code base;
d) X11:Cinnamon:Factory - Cinnamon development project for
openSUSE:Factory (if it happens);
Users who are relying on GNOME:Cinnamon should migrate to
X11:Cinnamon:GNOME34 as soon as possible, as GNOME:Cinnamon will be
disabled in the nearby future. There are currently no plans of
submitting Cinnamon to openSUSE:Factory since I'm not really
confortable with this. If it proves to be reliable, I'll submit it.
The current release available of Cinnamon is 1.5.7 (muffin 1.0.9) and
it's the preview of the upcoming 1.6 series.

Greg just announced the following for Tumbleweed,
Andreas
---------- Forwarded Message ----------
Subject: [opensuse-factory] Tumbleweed is now empty for 12.2
Date: Wednesday, September 05, 2012, 09:33:04
From: Greg KH <gregkh(a)linux.com>
To: opensuse-factory(a)opensuse.org
As part of the Tumbleweed lifecycle, with the 12.2 release of openSUSE,
the openSUSE:Tumbleweed repo is now empty so that you can start out with
a "clean" 12.2 release.
It will stay that way for a few weeks for things to settle down with
12.2, and then will start to add packages back to it (new kernel, KDE
4.9, etc.) as time permits.
So, if you wish to stay at 12.1 with Tumbleweed right now, I recommend
NOT updating your system until you feel comfortable moving to 12.2.
If anyone has any questions, please let me know.
thanks,
greg k-h

openSUSE Project Releases openSUSE 12.2
Latest community distro delivers a reliable, modern platform with
improved performance and a polished user experience on top of an evolved
infrastructure
THE INTERNET, September 5, 2012 -- The openSUSE Project, a global open
source community, announced today the general availability of openSUSE
12.2. The latest release delivers a reliable, modern and easy to use
multi-purpose operating system with improved performance and a polished
user experience on top of an evolved infrastructure. openSUSE 12.2 is
the latest Linux distribution from the openSUSE project allowing users
and developers to benefit from free and open source software in
physical, virtual and cloud environments.
“openSUSE 12.2 is the shining result of 10 months of global
collaboration on Free Software,” said Jos Poortvliet, openSUSE Community
Manager for SUSE. “The community has again delivered an important update
for this long-established Linux Distribution, finding that exciting
sweet spot combining the cutting edge with dependability.”
openSUSE 12.2 brings performance enhancements with the latest kernel and
system libraries as well as adoption of newly matured distribution
technologies and polish to existing features.
Performance enhancements
openSUSE 12.2 leverages the latest distribution technologies to deliver
greater performance and speed. The latest capabilities of systemd 44
make booting quicker. The Linux kernel 3.4 introduces a faster storage
layer by preventing blocking of the system during large data transfers.
The updated GNU C Library (glibc) version 2.15, speeds up many
functions, especially on 64 bit systems. openSUSE ships with the latest
version of the cross-platform application framework, Qt 4.8.1, making
the desktop more fluid and responsive.
Evolution of infrastructure
openSUSE adopts the latest developments in Linux distribution technology
as they mature. GRUB2 is the default bootloader laying the foundation
for booting from LVM and btrfs partitions as well as support for UEFI
Secure Boot. Plymouth version 0.8.6.1 provides flicker-free transitions
and attractive animations during bootup. openSUSE 12.2 begins the
process of revising and simplifying the UNIX filesystem hierarchy to
improve compatibility across distributions while also making it easier
for packagers and testers.
Polished features
openSUSE 12.2 delivers improvements to existing functionality to improve
the overall user experience. The popular btrfs filesystem includes
improved error handling and recovery tools, as well as the Snapper
snapshot tool, GNOME 3.4 brings smooth scrolling to all applications and
features a reworked System Settings and Contacts manager. KDE 4.8
includes a faster Dolphin file manager. XFCE 4.10 offers an enhanced
application finder.
In addition to the technical enhancements of openSUSE 12.2, the
documentation team has made a major revision of the reference manuals,
and has introduced changes to the authoring process to make it easier
for community contributors to write openSUSE documentation.
“We are proud of this release, maintaining the usual high openSUSE
quality standards.” says openSUSE Board member Andrew Wafaa. “Our growth
in the last two years means we have to work on scaling our processes.
We're looking forward to the upcoming openSUSE conference on October 20
to 23, 2012 in Prague to gather as a community and discuss how we can
evolve our current development in order to maintain quality while also
making it easier to learn and work together.”
