Hi, our opensuse.org main stage and ftp server will be down tomorrow for some hours. Expect a downtime from around 07:00 till 13:00 UTC. We will do a software and hardware upgrade during that time. [opensuse-announce] openSUSE 10.2 Alpha3 Release

I'm glad to announce the third alpha release of our 10.2 product. It's the first time that we're call our distribution "openSUSE" instead of "SUSE Linux". The codename of openSUSE 10.2 is "Basilisk Lizard". With the rename of the distribution, we renamed also the name in bugzilla.novell.com so that you have to report bugs against "openSUSE 10.2". Compared with Alpha2, we've made a number of significant changes: * We switched to kernel 2.6.18rc4 - and neither all kernel module packages (kmp) nor the Xen packages have been adopted for the new kernel. * openSUSE 10.2 contains KDE 3.5.4 * We started the switch to GNOME 2.16 Beta and have now the base packages in, more to come later for Alpha4. * The new branding "openSUSE" is shown in the first places but there's still some existing SUSE Linux 10.1 branding. * X11 R7.1 with different pathes (no more /usr/X11R6 for the xorg packages): Users with a working X11 configuration will not see many real changes. First, the pathes have changed, so most applications that lived in /usr/X11R6/bin now exist in /usr/bin. So, hard coded paths need to be changed. The X11 Release 7 is fully modularized. This is reflected in our packaging as it enables us to provide updates for individual components like drivers and libraries once they become available independently of the release cycle of the X Window System. As with every major update, a lot of bugs have been fixed in all areas. The changed pathes broke building of packages, so developers might need to change their software. * cups 1.2.2: This is a major update (from version 1.1.x), the highlights are IPv6 support, network printer discovery (CUPS can now find printers on the LAN using SNMP) and LDAP support. A cool feature are unique job ids: CUPS maintains a new job-uuid attribute which provides a unique identifier that can be used to track a job on your network or anywhere in the world * Updated development tools like gettext 0.15 and autoconf 2.60. * We now have a gcc package and a gcc41 package in such a way that in the future a gcc42 package might be available as well, giving you the chance to use different gcc versions at the same time. * Using patterns instead of selections in the package manager (think of patterns as package groups with some semantics). We have currently only a basic set of patterns and will enhance them. All these changes needed changes by other packages, so a lot of other packages have been fixed to build again (and updated), and some still need updating. Alphas of openSUSE are rather untested and more for the experimental folks. I do not suggest to use it in production. But I do consider especially Alpha3 an important milestone for development and testing. The list of known bugs is available as usual at: http://en.opensuse.org/Bugs:Most_Annoying_Bugs#openSUSE_10.2_Alpha_3 The current ones are: * YaST does not allow X11 configuration since it asks for non-existant xorg-x11-server-glx Bug #198250. Note: I could run X11 nevertheless and logged into both KDE and GNOME. * zen-updater always shows patterns to update Bug #198379 * f-spot does not work Bug #198377 * gnome-wm does not handle X11R7 Bug #198380 * Firefox does not start Bug #197928 * Registration fails with an internal server error Bug #198381 * applications using python-gtk are broken, e.g. smart-gui Bug #198391 * kde su does not accept correct password Bug #198408 * Most kernel module packages are not build against the new 2.6.18rc4 kernel. Introducing the new mailinglist server

Hi there, now that we switched to the new mailinglist server i would like to tell you about the changes it brings with it. The old mailinglist software was ezmlm. The new mailinglist software is mlmmj. 1. Adresses ~~~~~~~~~~~ 1.1 Command Delimiter --------------------- In general all addresses you are used to will still work. The new server accepts - as well as + as delimiter between the listname and the command. So <listname>-<command> will still work. But please start to use the + because i will drop the - in the future. 1.2 subscription ---------------- Mailinglist subscription works with the following address: * <listname>+subscribe(a)opensuse.org the old syntax of <listname>-subscribe-<subscription-address>@opensuse.org doe _NOT_ work anymore. This is due the changes of subscriber identification from the 'Return-Path' header to the 'From' header. If you want to subscribe another address change the 'From' header in your mailer. 1.3 subscription to the nomail version of a list ------------------------------------------------ The nomail version of a list means that you are reccognized as a subscriber, but will not get any messages from the list. This is useful when it's necessary to post from several emailaddresses to a subscribers only list or if you read mails from the list elsewhere (gmane). Subscription works with the following address: * <listname>+subscribe-nomail(a)opensuse.org 1.4 subscription to the digest version of a list ------------------------------------------------ A Mailing List Digest combines multiple messages posted to a mailing list in to a single message. Digests are usually sent once a day and serve to reduce the number of emails received from a particular mailing list. Subscription works with the following address: * <listname>+subscribe-digest(a)opensuse.org Digest are turned off for all existing lists so you cant subscribe to them. In the future we might have lists with digests. 1.5 unsubscription ------------------ All the addresses above work also for unsubscription. Just replace subscribe with unsubscribe in them. 1.6 retrieval of messages from the archive ------------------------------------------ For retrieval of message number N in the archive send a message to the following address: * <listname>+get-N(a)opensuse.org 1.7 Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) ------------------------------------ For a collection of frequently asked questions about this list send a message to: * <listname>+faq(a)opensuse.org 1.8 Talk to the lists owner --------------------------- To contact the list owner, send a message to: * <listname>+owner(a)opensuse.org 1.9 Reply-To munging -------------------- We do not "munge" the mail headers by inserting a "Reply-To: <listname>@opensuse.org" anymore because it makes it more difficult subscribers to handle the mail the way they want to. Your mail client probably has a "reply" function as well as a "reply to all" or "reply to list" one; Please use the latter if you want you message to go to the list and not just to the original poster. 1.10 Dropped commands --------------------- The following is a list of ezmlm commands we wont support anymore: * <listname>-archive(a)opensuse.org * <listname>-info(a)opensuse.org * <listname>-request(a)opensuse.org * <listname>-edit(a)opensuse.org * <listname>-index(a)opensuse.org * <listname>-thread(a)opensuse.org * <listname>-query(a)opensuse.org * <listname>-log(a)opensuse.org If you desperately need some them please get in contact with me. 2. Webarchive ~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The webarchive is totally redesigned to match the wiki design and has a couple of new features. 2.1 Mailbox files for download ------------------------------ Each list is available as mbox file split into months. So if you unsusbcribe because you go on vacation or whatever there is now an easy way to get mails from the archive. Just download the mbox file and import it into your mailer. 2.2 Web-Search -------------- The web-archives now support searching. The index generation is happening * for all lists every sunday at 03:00 (GMT) * for the individual lists every 5 minutes This is all for now. Hi, today (i dont know the exact time yet) i will transfer the rest of the opensuse mailinglists to the new mailinglist server. Bear with me please :) I expect some problems with posting for a minority of subscribers because of the different approach to subscriber identification. To identify subscribers the old mailinglist server took the address in the "Return-Path" of the Mail. The new mailinglist server takes the address in the "From" header.
