Suse 9.1 x96_64 You problem

Dear All, I recently installed suse 9.1 x86_64 on an amd64 platform. After a minimal install I ran You. After doing so, "You" stopped functioning and would spit out a bunch of errors and die. I surfed around and found a couple solutions, one being to reinstall the You auto update package. This worked but now when I run You It doesn't know what type of systems its on. first I get: Cannot fetch remote server list. Only user-defined patch The Internet connection is fine and I can surf around with lynx. Under system information I get: Last successful update was performed 7 days ago. udev nfsroot on suse 9.3

Hi, I am trying to boot and suse-9.3 client with nfsroot. The Suse-9.3 client is diskless which is why I need it to boot from a server with nfsroot("/") readonly. Everything seems to be working fine except for udev. When the client boots it complains about /dev being read only. I need /dev to be entirely a tmpfs and to get populated at boot time by udev. I changed this line in /etc/init.d/boot.localfs: echo "Mounting local file systems..." mount -fv -t proc proc /proc mount -fv -t sysfs sysfs /sys mount -fv -t tmpfs tmpfs /dev ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ mount -fv -t tmpfs tmpfs /dev/shm rc_status but that did not work. I still get the message that /dev is read only here is the boot message: Mounting local file systems... proc on /proc type proc (rw) sysfs on /sys type sysfs (rw) tmpfs on /dev type tmpfs (rw) devpts on /dev/pts type devpts (rw,mode=0620,gid=5) done Starting udevd touch: cannot touch `/dev/devperms': Read-only file system Can anyone point me in the right direction or have any idea hot to get /dev to be a tmpfs and get populated by udev at boot? is there a CPU number limit in SuSE 10?

I have not been able to find this info on the web or in the documentation. This is a four CPU system to be used as a graphics rendering workstation, not a server. Will SuSE-AMD64 10 work with a four processor system? Has anyone made it work? My rendering guy wants the multimedia and graphics he can get on SuSE 10 that he cannot get on SLES. Thank-you. melissa

FW: Boot issue with HP XW9300 and SUSE 10

Hello all! I got throught the intial install of SUSE 10 on an HP XW9300 (1 CPU, 4GB Ram, (2) 80GB SCSI drives, QuadroFX 1400, Version 2.5 BIOS). I ran the install and boot with no ACPI. However no matter what I try the boot gets stuck at: PCI: Probing PCI hardware (bus 00) Does anyone know of a solution for this? Thanks. Jeff Zemsky

Trouble installing the nVidia drivers

Hi all. I am trying kernel 2.6.15-rc5, which I downloaded from the SuSE ftp site. When trying to install the nVidia 8178 drivers, the nVidia installer fails and in the nVidia error log file I see an error message about the kernel lacking the vmap() function. Monitoring tools for raid controller

Hello, My server is getting me crazy. I installed SuSE 10.0 (64 bits) using a raid controller (Adaptec 2020SA Zero Channel) so the driver installed was "aacraid" that detected all the drives attached to the raid card with no problems and system installed smoothly. Before installing, I defined 2 raid levels on s-ata hard drives: Raid 1: disks 1 and 2 for operating system Raid 5: disks 3, 4 and 5 for data backup After one or two months I am experiencing a very strange arrays degradations. The card beeps, detects a disk failure and starts rebuilding the array, but there is no evidence of this on /var/log/messages neither /var/log/warn and hard drives seems to be O.K. I was wondering if there is any utility to check the status of the arrays under SuSE 10.0 and what are your experiences with this controller (if any). I don't know what can be happening (why arrays became degraded and why SuSE does not log anything). There is an utility application provided by the manufacturer of the board (Supermicro) to manage arrays (Adaptec Storage Manager - ASM), but not sure if can be installed on this SuSE release. It seems that uses Java and my system is console based. Any experience you could provide me are very welcome. :-) Greetings. -- Camaleón

Cannot install SuSE 10 on IBM Thinkpad Z60T

I have recently acquired an IBM Thinkpad model Z60T, and am trying to use it in dual boot mode (Window XP & SuSE 10). The Window XP was installed by the maker of the Thinkpad (Lenovo). I then created a new partition using the commonly used "Partition Magic" program for the Window operating system. The creation of a new partition was successful, in the sense that the existing Winow XP is intact and I can use that operating system. However, there is a serious problem when I try to install SuSE10 in the other new and still empty partition. The installation process ends up with a message: Cannot install the Boot Loader I am totally inexpirienced in these matters, and my own guess (which could be wrong) is that the manufacturer may have locked the master boot record (as a security measure). But I do not now how to unlock or even how to find out whether the mbr is locked or not. Please help. Your help will be greatly appreciated. -- Best regards. Sheo (Sheo S.
