Hi, I just upgraded the BIOS of my A8V deluxe to the newest version (1014) und tried to boot with the Suse 9.3 Live-CD, distributed by the German magazine c't. Greetings I've been experiencing an annoyance since I built this box. Every once in a while, a few times per day, the video goes blank for a couple of seconds and then comes back as if nothing happened. I'm using the nvidia-supplied drivers and the digital video output. Any clues? SK8N SUSE 9.3 problems

Hello, I am trying to install SUSE 9.3 on Asus SK8N motherboard running Opteron. I use the built-in Promise SATA controller with two disks in IDE mode. I was able to perfectly run SuSE 9.1 on this system for a long, long time. Now, with SuSE 9.3 I am not even able to get through the installation. It seems that the disk access causes the installation to hang sooner or later. When files are being copied the installation just freezes. It seems that this problem is not specific to SUSE. Any other distro with 2.6 kernel that I tried freezes in the same way as SUSE. Does anyone have a success story installing SUSE 9.3 on a similar setup? And also, is there some way that I can save kernel messages during installation? Thanks, Marcin Zalewski

can't read DVD (solved)

Hello everyone: Just to bring you up to speed, I'm running SuSE 9.3 professional in 64-bit mode on an AMD 64 laptop. Recently I was experiencing problems with YaST (Yet another System Tool) as I couldn't install additional software packages. YaST couldn't 'see' the DVD and would report: ERROR (InstSrc: E_no_instsrc_on_media) [ /media.1/media ] This file ( /media.1/media ) contains text identifying the make and model of the software (SuSE 9.3, DVD 1). Somehow this file was corrupted on the laptop and this was preventing YaST from 'seeing' the DVD. However, after a clean install, everything worked. So, I assumed that the problem was with the YaST update packages and, on the next update, I avoided all of the YaST patches only to have the problem re-surface on the next reboot. After reading my posts, another user suggested I attempt another upgrade but not to upgrade the Linux kernel. This seems to have solved the problem. I did a fresh install - everything worked. I even used YaST's 'Check Media' program on the DVD - it got a clean bill of health. I then did an upgrade but I DID NOT upgrade the LINUX KERNEL. Well, after the upgrade and a re-boot - everything is working correctly. And YaST's Media Check gave the DVD another clean bill of health. So, there must be some sort of incompatibility problem between my machine and the kernel upgrade. Hope this helps. In closing, I would like to thank all of you who helped to solve this problem. I have an Acer 5002 WLMI laptop, and I am trying to get the wireless working. Go here to learn more: http://linux-ntfs.sourceforge.net/info/ntfs.html Towards the bottom of the FAQ are links to projects that are attempting NTFS read/write, but this is dangerous for the filesystem (work in progress), use at own risk. A better recommendation, format the external drive as FAT32 instead if you don't need NTFS for anything since Windows and Linux can both read/write FAT32. As for mounting the NTFS for normal users: http://linux-ntfs.sourceforge.net/info/ntfs.html#4.10 You'll need to make some changes to the partition name that they use since you're mounting it as usb and not hda1 per their examples. I plugged in an external USB HD (NTFS) of mine while logged in as a normal user. The removable media icon showed up on the file browser but when i click to open and explore within it gave me an access denied error. When I log in as root I am able to browse and access the files. Also I am unable to modify any of the files or write new ones. Acts like a CD. Suspend/ Resume on Suse 9.3 x86_64 on Acer Ferrari 4005 not working

I am new to Suse 9.3 x86_64 and I like it very much. I would love to have suspend resume work on my laptop. I was delighted to see that Suse 9.3 x86_64 seems to have support for it in KPowerSave "Suspend to Disk" menu. However, when I run it, the screen writes some text but never goes blank and system never shuts down entirely. I then do a hard reset by holding down the power key. When I reboot it appears to just start as if it were never suspended. What am I missing? Thanks. -- Regards, Farrukh

Odd situation when installing SuSE Pro 9.3 on Tyan 2895

Hello, I'm setting up a Tyan 2895 with dual 250's, 2 SATA HD, 2 GB Kingston RAM, BIOS 1.01. At the end of the SuSE install, you're given the option to test the connection to the Internet, and download the latest release notes. Both work fine. Then you're given the choice to perform an online update via YOU. This is when things get weird: Most of the time (I've done this a few times), after a while of downloading the updates, the process will just freeze. I found out that what happens is that both ethernet ports simply stop receiving. When I get to another virtual console, I cannot ping the nearby machines (request times out). Both ports simply stop working. It is necessary to physically cut the power for the ports to work again. So far, it only happens with YOU. I know the switch and cables are not to blame (and neither the internet connection) for this problem does not happen while installing 9.3 on a 2885 on the same segment. Any ideas? Hi there, Well I'm at it again, you may remember my troubles with getting the NVidia drivers to work on an HP xw9300 workstation with SuSE 9.2 back in April. The machine is back in my office again, and I'm giving it another shot. I'm also posting this message in the nvnews forums, but I was hoping I might get some help here too (Thanks in advance Kevin and the rest of you): I'm trying to get the 7676 x86-64 driver running on SuSE 9.3 on an HP xw9300 (dual Opteron 250s, 8 GB RAM, nForce Professional 2200 chipset. I've been experiencing two different lockups. One involves only an Xid: Aug 24 16:53:16 ekk2 kernel: NVRM: Xid: 25, L1 -> L0 Aug 24 16:53:16 ekk2 kernel: NVRM: Xid: 13, 0005 beef3097 00004097 00001748 00000000 00000002 This error locks up my opengl app momentarily, but the X server has always recovered so far. Hi all. I am unable to find any way of accessing the gnome desktop. It isn't offered as an option on logout/end session. I don't see any way to log into it at startup. Yast tells me that gnome is installed but I can find no way to boot into it. What am I doing wrong? Why can't I find it? Is there some other way I change the settings for things like fonts and default email program for gnome other than booting into it?? -- LTR bulloved(a)nitline.com

libfam.la error with kkbswitch in suse 9.3

Hello, I am trying to install kkbswitch but things aren't going as planned. I am configuring with: $ ./configure -with-qt-libraries=/usr/lib/qt3/lib64/ -x-libraries=/usr/X11R6/lib64/ and I get: $ Good - your configure finished. Start make now But when I try: $ make I am getting the following error $ libtool: link: cannot find the library `/usr/lib/libfam.la' $ make[2]: *** [kkbswitch] Error 1 The library libfam.la is situated in /usr/lib64/. RAID

Hello, I have recently acquired an adaptec 2230slp card and want to setup a RAID array. The documentation for the card says that SuSE will not see the controller as a boot device? I am using SuSE 9.1 x86_64 and want to just migrate to a RAID. I was wondering if anyone had experience with this card, and what would the best way be to migrate to a raid from an existing install? Hard drive crash

I'm not having any luck with google - I suspect it's a terminology problem. I had a bad hard drive crash last weekend. KDE froze to the point that I needed to do a hard reboot (the problem turned out to be a memory stick that was loose). Tried to repair it using a SuSE boot disk and the repair option under install. This made things worse. 2 partitions - /dev/hda1 is a linux swap and /dev/hda2 is a bootable reiserfs (kicking myself now that I didn't make home a separate partition). My current state is that if I try to boot that drive, I get a Grub error 16. I can't get into Grub to edit it. SuSE recognizes the partitions but fails when I try mounting the partition on another drive, repair using the tools under installation or update. I've used a rescue cd to check the disk with fdisk and gnu-parted - they agree on the partitions but gnu-parted is reporting that I have 2 TB of space used on a 163GB partition. I have no clue what to do next. Should I try resizing the partition and hope it "deletes" the extra used space or is there some other way to force a recheck or reindex of the partition. System Details: X86_64 on a MSI K8T Neo FIS2R motherboard. 1024kb ram now properly installed and being recognized. The drive in question is made by Hitachi but I don't have the details handy. However, I don't think any of this should matter since the problem doesn't seem to be hardware related. Thanks Hilary Hilary L. sound quit working.

Recently sound has quit working. I don't believe that this is a hardware problem since it works when booted into another OS. I installed 9.3 recently, but sound was working fine after that stopping at some point since. Could this have anything to do with my problem? I tried going to YAST to configure it, but YAST informs me that: "The kernel module snd-ice1712 for sound support could not be loaded. This can be caused by incorrect module parameters, including invalid IO or IRQ parameters." Any ideas what could be going on? How do I change the module parameters assuming I can figure out what needs to be changed? Regards, Bill
