Memory test option does nothing

I have a Dual Opteron with both SuSE9.3 & Fedora 3, SuSE being the default . Both are x86_64 versions. In splash screen, where we are asked to make choices for either the SuSE or Fedora, we have an additional option to make a choice for memory test. However, when I choose memory test, then the screen goes blank and nothing happens. How can I get the memory test done? Your help will be greatly appreciated. -- Best regards. Sheo (Sheo S. nasty A8N8x bug

Hi, Anyone out there with Asus A8N8x x86-64 motherboard and SUSE 9.3? I haven't had any success with SUSE kernels for a long time with SUSE 9.3. Mainline kernels work fine, as do SUSE 9.1 and 9.2 kernels, but none of the 9.3 kernels make it through kernel initialization phase. They hang on 'probing PCI hardware (00)'. Tried different BIOS versions and PCI/APIC related BIOS settings and kernel parameters, but no luck there. When 9.3 came out i had to rip out SUSE kernel during installation and revert it to the one used in 9.2. I was quietly wishing this was a temporary 9.3 bug and would be resolved soon, but no. Still blank. Any ideas? I'd be willing to help in any way i can to resolve this. Has to be some nasty PCI related patch applied to 9.3 that my box just doesn't handle properly. -- // Janne

Hi, We have two of the same workstations (W1100z) and we are seeing exactly the same problem as described in Mark's e-mail under Suse 9.3. The problem also occurs under Novell Linux Desktop. I can also add Fedora Core 4 and Ubuntu 5.04 to the list of distros that work properly. This is definitely a compatibility issue with Suse only. Suse is the distribution of choice at our institution and this problem is proving to be very frustrating. I would welcome any suggestions as to how we might work around it. For instance, time was not linear on this machine, it keeps jumping back and forth all the time. Very odd behavior, the OS was really confused. Hello Hereafter my small contrib on an AMD64 laptop and SuSE AMD64. Mine is an Asus L5D, no more available. I bought it on last year, on July exactly. So one year with this laptop .... and SuSE 9.0 + SuSE 9.1 (the two ones are installed with WinXP). What does not work with SuSE AMD64 : - internal modem : this is a Conexant one, a Linuxant driver 64 bits is available now; I prefer to buy a PCMCIA modem card (Com One) - wifi device : this is a Broadcom one. I am going to have a look on Linuxant site ... - card reader (3in1) : this is a Ricoh one About PCMCIA : with the help of Matt, my Com One modem works fine with SuSE 9.1 (updated with kernel and PCMCIA package of SuSE 9.2); with SuSE 9.0, sometimes it works .... in one location, not everywhere (That's curious). About ACPI : suspend to RAM and suspend to disk are not activated (just for info : I bought last week a HP laptop nx6110 without OS, I installed SuSE 9.3 32 bits and I could test the suspend to disk : it works fine !!, so with SuSE 9.3 AMD64 on a 64 bits laptop, it should work too). Just a small problem with SuSE 9.0 : if I halt the laptop plugged on AC power (with or without battery) and try to start again with ON/OFF button, it freezes on Asus logo. Not the case with SuSE 9.1 or WinXP. About video card (FX 5650) : I use the Nvidia drivers downloaded from Nvidia website. What a beautifull screen (1400x1050) ! This is with the last XFree package supplied by SuSE. About web navigator : I use Opera with 32 bits plugins ... and sometimes FireFox ou Mozilla when no flashplayer website. Take care : on SuSE 9.0 or SuSE 9.1 the plugin Java was not 64 bits. I had to download and install the Blackdown Java one. To my mind, the best choice : a 64 bits laptop with Nvidia graphic card and chipset + SuSE AMD64. I suppose that SuSE 9.3 AMD64 is like the previous ones : very good. I never try Mandrake 64 bits or Fedora Core 64 bits but it seems that SuSe makes the best distrib for AMD64 allowing to run 32 bits softwares. Regards Pascal

Hello, I have 9.2 installed on a Dual Opteron and want to upgrade to 9.3. Has anyone had any success with upgrading? Curious to see if anyone has had any good results before I scrub the OS and do a fresh install. Thanks in advance, James

PHP 5 und Oracle Instant Client

Hallo, nach einem Hinweis aus der SuSE-Oracle-Liste wende ich mich an Euch, in der Hoffnung auf einen Rat... Ich habe das Problem, dass ich auf einem Dual-Xeon mit Suse x86_64 9.3 ein aktuelles PHP5 mit u.a. Unterstützung für den Oracle Instant Client kompilieren muss. Letzterer ist nicht in 64 bit erhältlich, weshalb der Compilervorgang logischwerweise immer mit einem Hinweis auf eine inkomaptible Bibilothek abbricht... Bevor ich das Xeon-System mit SuSE 9.3 x86_32 neu aufsetzen muss (denn bei meinen Tests in der x86_32 Version lief das völlig reibungslos) meine Frage, ob ich evtl. auf dem 64bit System ein 32bittiges PHP executable kompilerien kann... Folgende Versuche habe ich unternommen jedoch ohne Erfolg: --target=i386-pc-linux-gnu und auch export CC='gcc -m32' Ich wäre Euch wirklich dankbar, wenn Ihr mir weiterhelfen könntet. Die Supportdatenbank von Oracle weiß auch keine Lösung und die Installation des kompletten "alten" Oracle Clients soll ich auf jeden Fall vermeiden (zumal der auch Probleme macht -- wenn auch andere --, wie ich feststellen durfte...). Welche Bedingungen müssen den erfüllt sein, dass ich bei diesem BiArch-System ein 32bittiges PHP-Executable erzeugen kann? Wie gesagt, als Trost bliebe mir das System erneut mit 32bit aufzusetzenm, aber das wäre für mich nur die Notlösung... Danke im Vorab Reto

/proc/mtrr & BIOS-provided RAM map

I am having a horrible problem of wild and random variation in execution time of of a benchmark test program from one fresh reboot to another fresh reboot (and also from one try to another in any one reboot). At the advice of a few colleagues at linux-kernel(a)vger.kernel.org and at use-amd64(a)suse.com (who very kindly spared their valuable time to give me some advice), I tried booting with mem=4000M, mem= 3264, mem=3000M and mem=2000M (i.e, a value that is less than the actual RAM (4096M PC3200 in 4 dimms with 2 dimms on each CPU that is an Opteron 250 at 2.4 GHz) that are under the control of SuSE 9.3 operating system. None of the setting has helped. I continue to get the same wild and random variation in the execution of the test program under identical conditions (test program is the only program running, no Internet etc.). Also, no matter what is set for xxxx in mem=xxxxM , the contents of the /proc/mtrr & and the BIOS provide RAM map remain exactly the same (although the dmesg shows the amount of memory change with the value of xxxx in mem=xxxxM). Is this normal? Does this show any BIOS problem? What these are telling me. I will greatly appreciate any advice that any one may have for me on the above questions. thttpd and time zones?

Is anyone else running thttpd on SuSE Linux and experiencing wierd time zone behaviour? I have thttpd running as a light-weight Web server on our Web proxies in order to provide access to the autoproxy "proxy.pac" file (leaving this duty up to the corporate Web "experts" has proven to be too great a risk): hostname:~ # cat /etc/SuSE-release ; uname -srm ; rpm -q thttpd SuSE Linux 9.2 (x86-64) VERSION = 9.2 Linux 2.6.8-24.16-smp x86_64 thttpd-2.25b-27 Using the default SuSE configuration, thttpd writes primarily to the log "/var/log/thttpd.log", though periodically it likes to dump status info to the system log (/var/log/messages). In both cases, thttpd seems to prefer UTC/GMT rather than the local time zone - for example, the request log (/var/log/thttpd.log) contains time stamps like this: 09/Jul/2005:07:17:39 +0000 instead of this: 09/Jul/2005:17:17:39 +1000 Okay, that's fine and restricted to the access log - I can adjust for that and am not too worried; however, entries written to the system log are _also_ in the wrong time zone, so /var/log/messages ends up containing time stamps like this: Jul 9 16:28:45 hostname -- MARK -- Jul 9 06:29:15 hostname thttpd... The system clock is set as per: hostname:~ # egrep -v '^(#|$)' /etc/sysconfig/clock HWCLOCK="--localtime" TIMEZONE="Australia/Sydney" DEFAULT_TIMEZONE="Australia/Sydney" The machine runs NTP to keep the clock accurate and is synchronised to two stratum 2 NTP servers. Other commands/services such as "date" or even Sendmail all show the correct time and time zone - for example: hostname:~ # date +%z +1000 Any idea why thttpd doesn't want to co-operate? Is this normal for thttpd, something in the SuSE RPM for thttpd or something screwed on my system? Thanks for any hints/data points...
