Hello,
I have suse 9.3 on Athlon64 box and see strange system freezes.
System is running as nfs- and ftp-server (vsftpd)
when I connect from another machine with lftp, I can change into the
directory, do ls -al etc. but as soon as I fire a "mirror -vv" the
server freezes hard! Cursor stops blinking, unable to switch tty, no
ssh access, no ctrl-alt-del etc... Alt-SysRq-b is the "softest" way to
get out of this.
The funny thing is: if I ssh into the box before starting the
ftp-session, everything is fine!
Same problem with NFS!
Tried it again and again and again ... absolutely reproducible!
Disabled acpi 2.0 / apm / apic in BIOS, even stopped rcpowersaved,
because I found some article about this ... but no luck.
So I setup a second box with exactly the same hardware configuration
(just slightly different PSU, but still 550W) and yes: I get the same
behavior.
Any idea ?
I really appreciate any of your help!
Best regards,
Burkhard
Hi Folks,
This motherboard has dual opteron machines and 4
memory banks per cpu and the memory bank is populated
as 1GB dimm and 2GB dimm next.
The error messages from syslog are the following. Is
it possible to tell which dimm of cpu 1 is bad.
physical access to the machine is not there.
thank you,
regards

Yeah, that tends to help. I've used that, in conjunction with CC="gcc -m32"
before.
I had to create a few custom -32bit rpms for work and did them that way.

Would it work if you ran "linux32 bash" and then ran the make from that
environment? Then it would believe the machine is an i686 (if I
remember correctly).

Sorry,
do somebody have any experience w/installation (and work)
of GTK 4.0.0 on SuSE Linux Professional 9.x ?
In particular, binary installer for x86-64 was prepared for SLES9,
and I don't know about possibility to use it on SuSE Linux
(9.0 and 9.1 are especially interesting for me). Should I install
from source in this case ?

I have an Opteron machine running 9.3 with a weird keyboard
behavior. It's a Tyan 2895 K8WE (the dual PCI-express one) with 2x
Opteron 250 on it, and 4GB of RAM.
As soon as I start X (KDE), the keyboard starts behaving erratic: if
I press one key, I get a several times the same character. Very
annoying. It behaves fine in the console mode (without X). I played
around with BIOS settings (key repeat and delay), and the X11
settings. Still the same. It does it both with a PS2 and a USB
keyboard. Anybody have seen anything like this ?

Hello *
i need to use a swapfile larger 2 GB on amd64.
I have read an earlier posting of Andi, that this is possible.
Since i still get only 2 GB Swap signatures when calling mkswap
my questions:
Do i have to enforce a size > 2 GB manually when calling mkswap or do i have to use a patched
mkswap ?
For those curios, why i don't use multiple swap partitions:
i'd like to do suspend to disk on a laptop with 2 GB Mem so
i need a littler bit more than those 2 GB continuos swap.
TIA
Micha
Hello all.
I am happy to announce that I just installed the newest arts rpms from
the apt-get repositories and now 'artsdsp skype &' works like a charm!
No error messages about unloadable libraries. As a test, I fired up
amaroK and then placed a call through skype to my cellphone. The sound
mixing worked as it should. (Yes, I was careful to isolate the sources
of my voice by unplugging the microphone from my laptop or
--exclusive or-- covering the microphone of my cellphone to make sure
sound worked as it should.)
The fact artsdsp on my 64-bit SuSE 9.3 system now works with 32-bit
software (I am quite certain amaroK has been compiled by SuSE as 64
-bit and absolutely positive skype is 32-bit) may have considerable
impact --positive one!-- on the multimedia capabilities of SuSE.
Per Bjoern Jacke's recommendation, I will continue my experiments with
aoss and report the results. :)
I also subscribe to another board about my 64-bit AMD laptop (Presario
R3000-series, which I need for its number crunching on-the-go
capabilities), so I keep a keen eye on problems encountered by people
running other Linux distributions on this laptop. Furthermore, I have a
friend who sets up SMP Opteron boards. From the information I have
gathered from these two sources, I believe that when it comes to AMD64
(single- or multi-processor), SuSE wins hands down! :)

Bjoern,
Thank you for your response. I have a couple of questions, stated after

(1) Do you mean '/etc/profile.local' (not '/etc/profile/locale')?
(2) There is '/usr/lib/libaoss.so' and '/usr/lib64/libaoss.so' in my
64-bit SuSE 9.3 . Should both be used?
(3) Where can I find some decent documentation about ALSA? SuSE's manual
is not very clear (highly unusual for SuSE --I usually pay full price
just for their excellent manuals!) and the documentation in
alsa.opensrc.org leaves a lot of gaps in my opinion. TIA.
I don't know about 9.3 on an AMD64, but I had 9.2 running on the demo
version of MS's Virtual Server 2005. I was running it on a 1.5 GHz
Pentium 4 workstation with a Gig of RAM. My host OS was Windows XP sp2.
It worked great. Full network support and everything. I even had SuSE
update itself with YOU. Of course, since I was testing it out for
future server considerations, I didn't try running SuSE in full
graphical mode. But the original install screen was the graphical
version. So I assumed that it would have worked.
