Adaptec aic79xx: cyclic hdd access

Hello community! I have installed both SuSE 9.2 and SLES9 on a SUN W2100Z Workstation. So far so good. The system is installed on a SCSI hdd connected to the onboard adaptec 7902 controller. The aic79xx module is loaded. Even when the system is idle, there are cyclic (appr. each 3 seconds) accesses to the hdd during which the desktop will freeze for a moment, e.g. glxgears will stock also. The system initially came pre-installed with SuSE Linux (don't remember which version) from SUN and didn't show these symptoms. Probably there is a way to fix this. Any ideas what the reason may be? Fam daemon behavior

Hi, I am running a suse 9.3 box, which has all the updates. The system stays on for days, and i use a lot of peer-to-peer software. I noticed that fam is using all of my cpu (cpu sensor is always at 100 %), and sometimes the rest of the system is not responding fast ( i mean when i try to open konqueror, sometimes it takes more than 1 minute). All these dissappear when i kill the fam daemon. 1)Is fam behavior normal? 2)Is any problem running the system without the fam daemon? Video problems with 9.3

A couple of days ago I received my SuSE 9.3 and immediately I tried upgrading my Presario AMD64 notebook from 9.2 to 9.3. Because there were some files which created problems to the upgrade, I decided to do a clean install of 9.3. This laptop has an Nvidia GeForce 440 Go video card, with 64 MB of dedicated video RAM. After all was said and done, I realized that the newest Nvidia driver does not work very well. After installing it, I get a black screen. I went through many gyrations, but now it seems I have no 3D acceleration at all. Trying to run the test program glxgears, I get the following error: Xlib: extension "GLX" missing on display ":0.0" glxgears: Error: couldn't get an RGB, Double-buffered visual I am getting the same behavior no matter whether I install the nvidia driver through YAST (by sellecting "Intalled and installable patches," right-clicking, and forcing an update) or the nvidia installer. The end result is a black screen. I am not sure what I have done thus far to get the video working, albeit suboptimally. And I don't remember which version of the nvidia driver I had with SuSE 9.2. My resolution is 1680×1050. Also, I installed MPlayer from the apt-get repostories, but it segfaults at startup. Getting xine to work half way was an adventure. libxine1 complained about its dependency on w32codec-all. I installed it from the packman site (but I think it was the 32 bit rpm version, although it installed fine). When I play a DVD with xine, I hear the audio just fine, but there is no video. Any ideas? On the plus side, the scilab rpm I got from the apt-get repositories worked out ot the box. I don't think the one that came on the SuSE DVD installs properly. I noticed on reboot last night that it was complaining about reiserfs.ko and reiser4.ko. I was not able to catch the entire message as it scrolled by. But it appeared to not be properly implemented in my running kernel. Hi Alain, modified the /etc/X11/XF86Config as explained in the README file. 3D (inclusive 3D games) and TV out are working. Also the increase of the video performance is amazing. Only wine fails. I'm not sure if this is only suse-amd64 related or a general problem with the new ATI driver kr ... Detlef, I was using that driver under 9.2 with winex with no problems. I used it to play Counter-Strike. What does fglrxinfo show for the rendering device? I just installed 9.3 (64bit) last night on an MSI K8N NEO2 Platinum mother board with an Rev E 939 3200+ chip currently over clocked from 2.0 GHz to 2.4 GHz, 1 GB of OCZ Platinum (2-3-2-5) Dual Channel RAM and 2 Seagate 160GB SATA drives in a RAID0 (striped). Well, not fully striped, /boot is mirrored, then 1.3GB on each for swap (un mirrored) and then the rest of the disks are stripped for /. I have horrible I/O latency. seriell port problem

Hi, we have a Tyan Quad Opteron and connected a 4TB EasyRaid to the external SCSI port and it works fine. The problem is the second connection between server and Easyraid over the seriell port. If the seriell cable is connected to the server it doesn't boot. Over this cable you can control the status of the disk in the Easyraid. We have Suse 9.1 on the server, the Easyraid was already configured by the vendor and we only attached it to the server. Kernel is 2.6.5-7.151-smp. Does anyone had same strange problems? + N. Asus A8N SLI Deluxe problems

Hi, 2 months ago I have bought a fanless computer with an A8N SLI Deluxe board. Normally this board has a chipset fan built in. The hardware vendor exchanges this fan by a big heat sink to provide a really fanless system. Now I have shredded the second board within 2 months. The computer works excellent over about 3 weeks. The last uptime was 22 days. Then I get errors on the 3 sata disks. The disks themselves are ok. Last time we have changed the board and all problems were gone. I suspect the exchanged chipset fan to be the problem. The hardware vendor assures there weren't any problems with the modified board so far. He claims linux is the culprit. But I think the chip runs somewhere on it's temperature limit and after a half-live of 22 days it decays. Who is right? Are there any similar problems known? Torsten Förtsch
